Definitions related to dengue fever:
-
(dengue) Acute infectious, eruptive, febrile disease caused by four antigenically related but distinct serotypes of the dengue virus; transmitted by the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, especially A. aegypti; classical dengue (dengue fever) is self-limiting and characterized by fever, myalgia, headache, and rash; dengue hemorrhagic fever is a more virulent form of dengue virus infection.CRISP ThesaurusNational Institutes of Health, 2006

(dengue) An acute febrile disease transmitted by the bite of AEDES mosquitoes infected with DENGUE VIRUS. It is self-limiting and characterized by fever, myalgia, headache, and rash. SEVERE DENGUE is a more virulent form of dengue.NLM Medical Subject HeadingsU.S. National Library of Medicine, 2021
-
(dengue) An infection that is caused by the dengue virus, which is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes, and which is characterized by sudden onset of fever, headache, rash, arthralgia, and myalgia. Occasionally, patients develop either dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), a more severe form of the disease that is characterized by plasma leakage due to increased vascular permeability, or dengue shock syndrome (DSS), which can cause circulatory collapse and possibly death.NICHD Pediatric TerminologyU.S. National Cancer Institute, 2021

(dengue) Dengue is an infection caused by a virus. You can get it if an infected mosquito bites you. Dengue does not spread from person to person. It is common in warm, wet areas of the world. Outbreaks occur in the rainy season. Dengue is rare in the United States. Symptoms include a high fever, headaches, joint and muscle pain, vomiting, and a rash. In some cases, dengue turns into dengue hemorrhagic fever, which causes bleeding from your nose, gums, or under your skin. It can also become dengue shock syndrome, which causes massive bleeding and shock. These forms of dengue are life-threatening. There is no specific treatment. Most people with dengue recover within 2 weeks. Until then, drinking lots of fluids, resting and taking non-aspirin fever-reducing medicines might help. People with the more severe forms of dengue usually need to go to the hospital and get fluids. To lower your risk when traveling to areas where dengue is found Wear insect repellent with DEET; Wear clothes that cover your arms, legs and feet; Close unscreened doors and windows .MedlinePlusU.S. National Library of Medicine, 2021

Dengue fever (DF), caused by dengue virus, is an arboviral disease characterized by an initial non-specific febrile illness that can sometimes progress to more severe forms manifesting capillary leakage and hemorrhage (dengue hemorrhagic fever, or DHF) and shock (dengue shock syndrome, or DSS).OrphaNetINSERM, 2021

Dengue is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a flavivirus. Dengue fever usually results in abrupt onset of high fever, headache, myalgias, arthralgias, and generalized lymphadenopathy, followed by a rash that appears with a 2nd temperature rise after an afebrile period. Respiratory symptoms, such as cough, sore throat, and rhinorrhea,...Merck & Co., Inc., 2020

Dengue (DENG-gey) fever is a mosquito-borne disease that occurs in tropical and subtropical areas of the world. Mild dengue fever causes a high fever, rash, and muscle and joint pain. A severe form of dengue fever, also called dengue hemorrhagic fever, can cause severe bleeding, a sudden drop in blood pressure (shock) and death.Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research

Dengue infection is a globally important arboviral infection transmitted by the Aedes genus of mosquito (primarily Aedes aegypti , but also A albopticus ), an insect found in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. There are 4 antigenically distinct dengue virus serotypes: DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4. They are RNA viruses...Athenahealth, Inc., 2019

Dengue, acute infectious mosquito-borne fever that is temporarily incapacitating but rarely fatal. Besides fever, the disease is characterized by an extreme pain in and stiffness of the joints (hence the name "breakbone fever"). Complication of dengue fever can give rise to a more severe form...Encyclopedia Britannica, Inc., 2020
