  • A species of Gram positive, cocci shaped bacteria assigned to the phylum Firmicutes. This species is catalase negative, nonsporulating, and ferments lactose, maltose, starch, glucose and trehalose. H. kunzii is a nonvirulent member of the skin flora, but may become an opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised patients and has been isolated from wounds and breast masses.
