(hexamethylphosphoramide) A clear, colorless liquid with an aromatic odor that emits toxic fumes of phosphorous oxides and nitrogen oxides when heated to decomposition. Hexamethylphosphoramide is used as a stabilizer against thermal degradation in polystyrene and is used as a solvent in research laboratories. Exposure to this substance irritates the eyes, skin and respiratory-tract.
