A parasitic infection caused by the nematode Loa loa. The vector in the transmission of this infection is the horsefly (Tabanus) or the deerfly or mango fly (Chrysops). The larvae may be seen just beneath the skin or passing through the conjunctiva. Eye lesions are not uncommon. An infection that is caused by the nematode Loa loa, which is contracted via the bite of a deer fly. In temporary residents of endemic areas, the most common clinical manifestation is Calabar swelling (localized angioedema), typically on the extremities. Infected permanent residents of endemic areas typically manifest eye disease related to wandering of the adult worm. Loiasis is a filarial nematode infection with Loa loa. Symptoms include localized angioedema (Calabar swellings) in skin and subconjunctival migration of adult worms. Diagnosis is by detecting microfilariae in peripheral blood or seeing worms migrating across the eye. Treatment is with diethylcarbamazine.Merck & Co., Inc., 2020
