Definitions related to osteitis deformans:
-
A chronic condition in which both the breakdown and regrowth of bone are increased. Paget disease of bone occurs most frequently in the pelvic and leg bones, skull, and lower spine. It is most common in older individuals, and may lead to bone pain, deformities, and fractures.NCI Dictionary of Cancer TermsU.S. National Cancer Institute, 2021
-
A disease marked by repeated episodes of increased bone resorption followed by excessive attempts at repair, resulting in weakened, deformed bones of increased mass. The resultant architecture of the bone assumes a mosaic pattern in which the fibers take on a haphazard pattern instead of the normal parallel symmetry.NLM Medical Subject HeadingsU.S. National Library of Medicine, 2021
-
(bone paget disease) A disease of bone that initially results in the excessive resorption of bone (by osteoclasts) followed by the replacement of normal bone marrow with vascular and fibrous tissue.NCI ThesaurusU.S. National Cancer Institute, 2021

(paget's disease of bone) Paget's disease of bone is a chronic bone disorder. Normally, there is a process in which your bones break down and then regrow. In Paget's disease, this process is abnormal. There is excessive breakdown and regrowth of bone. Because the bones regrow too quickly, they are bigger and softer than normal. They may be misshapen and easily fractured (broken). Paget's usually affects just one or a few bones. Researchers do not know for sure The disease is more common in older people and those of northern European heritage. If you have a close relative who has Paget's, you are much more likely to have it. Many people do not know that they have Paget's, because it often has no symptoms. When there are symptoms, they are similar to those of arthritis and other disorders. The symptoms include Pain, which may be due to the disease or to arthritis, which can be a complication of Paget's; Headaches and hearing loss, which can happen when Paget's disease affects the skull; Pressure on the nerves, which can happen when Paget's disease affects the skull or...MedlinePlusU.S. National Library of Medicine, 2021

Paget's disease of bone interferes with your body's normal recycling process, in which new bone tissue gradually replaces old bone tissue. Over time, the disease can cause affected bones to become fragile and misshapen. Paget's disease of bone most commonly occurs in the pelvis, skull, spine and legs.Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research

This condition can affect any of the bones in the body; but most people have it in their spine, pelvis, skull, or leg bones. Paget disease of bone, chronic disease of middle age, characterized by excessive breakdown and formation of bone tissue. It is a localized disease that may be unifocal, affecting a single bone, or multifocal, affecting many bones or nearly the entire skeleton.
