Definitions related to hyperparathyroidism, primary:
-
(primary hyperparathyroidism) A type of hyperparathyroidism caused by a primary abnormality of the parathyroid glands (e.g., adenoma, carcinoma, hyperplasia). Primary hyperparathyroidism is associated with hyercalcemia.Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO)The Human Phenotype Ontology Project, 2021
-
(primary hyperparathyroidism) Hyperfunction of the parathyroid glands resulting in the overproduction of parathyroid hormone. It is caused by parathyroid adenoma, parathyroid hyperplasia, parathyroid carcinoma, and multiple endocrine neoplasia. It is associated with hypercalcemia and hypophosphatemia. Signs and symptoms include weakness, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, constipation, depression, bone pain, osteoporosis, cystic bone lesions, and kidney stones.NCI ThesaurusU.S. National Cancer Institute, 2021
-
(primary hyperparathyroidism) Hyperparathyroidism due to a condition originating within the parathyroid glands, resulting in hypercalcemia due to increased release of calcium and phosphate from bone matrix, increased renal calcium reabsorption, and increased renal production of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, which increases intestinal absorption of calcium. Primary hyperparathyroidism is also associated with hypophosphatemia as a result of phosphaturia. Clinical features include weakness, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, constipation, depression, and, if chronic, bone pain, osteoporosis, cystic bone lesions, and kidney stones.NICHD Pediatric TerminologyU.S. National Cancer Institute, 2021
-
A condition of abnormally elevated output of PARATHYROID HORMONE due to parathyroid HYPERPLASIA or PARATHYROID NEOPLASMS. It is characterized by the combination of HYPERCALCEMIA, phosphaturia, elevated renal 1,25-DIHYDROXYVITAMIN D3 synthesis, and increased BONE RESORPTION.NLM Medical Subject HeadingsU.S. National Library of Medicine, 2021

Hyperparathyroidism is an endocrine disorder in which the parathyroid glands in the neck produce too much parathyroid hormone (PTH). Signs and symptoms are often mild and nonspecific, such as a feeling of weakness and fatigue, depression, or aches and pains. With more severe disease, a person may have a loss of appetite, nausea,...National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is an endocrine disorder in which autonomous overproduction of parathyroid hormone (PTH) results in derangement of calcium metabolism. In approximately 80% of cases, over-production of PTH is due to a single parathyroid adenoma and, less commonly, multi-gland involvement may occur. Diagnosis occurs...Athenahealth, Inc., 2019
