This species is strictly aerobic, degrades hydrophobic substrates, assimilates glucose, fructose and mannose, and utilizes ethanol and glycerol as carbon sources. Y. lipolytica is a biocatalyst and used commercially in biotransformation to catalyze hydrolysis, esterification, interesterification and transesterification reactions.
