BACKGROUND
Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) is a popular spice containing curcumin that is responsible for its therapeutic effects. Curcumin with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-cancer, and antimicrobial activities has led to a lot of research focusing on it over the years. This systematic review aimed to evaluate research on the anti-Plasmodium berghei activity of curcumin and its derivatives.
METHODS
Our study was performed according to PRISMA guidelines and was recorded in the database of a systematic review and preclinical meta-analysis of CAMARADESNC3Rs (SyRF). The search was performed in five databases, namely Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, and Google Scholar, from 2010 to 2020. The following keywords were searched: "Plasmodium berghei", "Medicinal Plants", "Curcumin", "Concentration", Animals kind", "Treatment Durations", "Routes of Administration" and "in vivo".
RESULTS
Of the 3,500 papers initially obtained, 14 articles were reliable and were thus scrutinized. Animal models were included in all studies. The most commonly used animal strain was Albino (43%), followed by C57BL/6 (22%). The other studies used various murine strains, including BALB/c (14%) and ICR (7%). Two (14%) studies did not mention the strain of animal model used. Curcumin alone or in combination with other compounds depending on the dose used, route of administration, and animal model showed a moderate to strong anti-Plasmodium berghei effect.
CONCLUSION
According to the studies, curcumin has anti-malarial effects on Plasmodium berghei, and, however, its effect on human Plasmodium is unclear. Due to the side effects and drug resistance of current drugs in the treatment of human malaria, the use of new compounds with few or no side effects, such as curcumin, is recommended as an alternative or complementary treatment.

The combined technique (radioisotope and blue dye) is the gold standard for sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) and there is wide variation in techniques and blue dyes used. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the need for radioisotope and the optimal blue dye for SLNB. A total of 21 studies were included. The SLNB identification rates are high with all the commonly used blue dyes. Furthermore, methylene blue is superior to iso-sulfan blue and Patent Blue V with respect to false-negative rates. The combined technique remains the most accurate and effective technique for SLNB. In order to standardize the SLNB technique, comparative trials to determine the most effective blue dye and national guidelines are required.

Widespread use of oxidative hair dyes during the past decades has raised questions on the potential allergy reactions and their management, as well as prevention measures for both professionals and consumers. Allergic contact dermatitis can be elicited by various hair dye-related allergens, though the main problem remains with -phenylenediamine and related aromatic amines. If allergy is suspected, patch testing identifies the responsible hapten. Individuals sensitized to specific permanent hair dyes substances should avoid the exposure to these chemicals, but also be aware of possible cross-sensitization to other similar compounds. Cross-reactions detected in patch-tested populations indicate that one cannot safely use alternatives, although cross-reactivity is not always clinically relevant. An open application hair dye allergy self-test is recommended by manufacturers for early detection of allergy predisposition in consumers, although the lack of standardized conditions makes the efficacy of this process doubtful. Appropriate use of hand gloves, especially nitrile, is the most efficient prevention measure for professional hand eczema. In this systematic review, we focus on cross-reactions among hair dye-related allergens and make an attempt to answer some, frequently encountered by physicians, questions, while presenting the prevalence of the hair dye-related allergens.

Angiokeratomas can present therapeutic challenges, especially in cases of extensive lesions, where traditional surgical methods carry high risks of scarring and hemorrhage. Argon, pulsed dye (PDL), neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG), copper vapor, potassium titanyl phosphate, carbon dioxide, and erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) lasers have emerged as alternative options. To review the use and efficacy of lasers in treating angiokeratomas. A PubMed search identified randomized clinical trials, cohort studies, case series, and case reports involving laser treatment of cutaneous angiokeratomas. Twenty-five studies were included. Quality ratings were assigned using the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine scheme. Several laser modalities are effective in treating multiple variants of angiokeratomas. Vascular lasers like PDL, Nd:YAG, and argon are the most studied and of these, PDL offers the safest side effect profile. Nd:YAG may be more effective for hyperkeratotic angiokeratomas. Combination treatment with multiple laser modalities has also demonstrated some success. Lasers are a promising treatment option for angiokeratomas, but current use is limited by the lack of treatment guidelines. There are limited high quality studies comparing laser treatments to each other and to non-laser options. Additional studies are needed to establish guidelines and to optimize laser parameters.

BACKGROUND
Blue wheals and blue angioedema, the adverse reactions to blue dye injections with or without anaphylaxis, are poorly defined.
OBJECTIVE
The objective is to review the characteristics (ie, sex and age at onset, interval between blue dye injection and symptom onset, clinical manifestations, duration of blue wheals or angioedema), natural courses, and treatments of blue dye adverse reactions.
METHODS
A review of the articles published through July 2021 was performed per the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis recommendations.
RESULTS
Across 523 patients (175 studies) with any adverse reactions to blue dye injections, wheals, angioedema, or both occurred in 193 patients (36.9%). Of these 193 patients, 68 patients (35.2%) developed blue wheals or angioedema, 118 (61.1%) had ordinary wheals or angioedema (nonbluish), and 7 had both (3.6%). We reviewed 169 patients with available data (99 with ordinary lesions and 70 with blue lesions). Patent blue violet had the highest rate of inducing blue wheals or angioedema (odds ratio 4.9). Almost half of the patients with blue wheals or angioedema developed systemic symptoms; and of those with systemic symptoms, all except 1 progressed to anaphylaxis. On-demand treatments with antihistamines, corticosteroids, and epinephrine were commonly used and effective.
CONCLUSIONS
Using blue dyes can lead to blue wheals or angioedema and systemic reactions. In patients with a history of a severe allergic reaction to a blue dye, repeat administration of a blue dye should be used only after carefully weighing all the risks and benefits.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS
To estimate the impact of optical techniques on prevention of post-operative hypocalcemia and hypoparathyroidism after total thyroidectomy.
STUDY DESIGN
Systematic review and meta-analysis.
METHODS
A literature search was conducted in Pubmed, EMBASE, SCOPUS, and Cochrane databases. The main inclusion criteria for eligible articles for meta-analysis were patients with benign or malignant thyroid pathologies who underwent total thyroidectomy, utilization of optical techniques to support PGs preservation, the availability of calcium and/or PTH levels. The primary outcome was to evaluate the variation of calcium and PTH levels when adopting optical technologies compared to standard naked-eye surgery.
RESULTS
In total, 13 papers with 1484 procedures were included. Pooled proportion for short- and medium-term hypocalcemia rates were 8% (95% CI, 5%:11%) and 1% (95% CI, 0%:4%) for optical techniques, while for naked-eye surgery were 15% (95% CI, 9%:23%) and 5% (95% CI, 2%:9%), respectively.
CONCLUSIONS
Optical technologies reduced short and medium term hypocalcemia compared to conventional surgery.

Physical activity in general and sports in particular, is a mechanism that produces stress and generates great force in the tendon and in the muscle-tendon unit, which increases the risk of injury (tendinopathies). Eccentric and repetitive contraction of the muscle precipitates persistent microtraumatism in the tendon unit. In the development of tendinopathies, the cellular process includes inflammation, apoptosis, vascular, and neuronal changes. Currently, treatments with oral supplements are frequently used. Curcumin seems to preserve, and even repair, damaged tendons. In this systematic review, we focus more especially on the benefits of curcumin. The biological actions of curcumin are diverse, but act around three systems: (a) inflammatory, (b) nuclear factor B (NF-κB) related apoptosis pathways, and (c) oxidative stress systems. A bibliographic search is conducted under the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) as a basis for reporting reliable systematic reviews to perform a Scoping review. After analysing the manuscripts, we can conclude that curcumin is a product that demonstrates a significant biological antialgic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant power. Therefore, supplementation has a positive effect on the inflammatory and regenerative response in tendinopathies. In addition, curcumin decreases and modulates the cell infiltration, activation, and maturation of leukocytes, as well as the production of pro-inflammatory mediators at the site of inflammation.

Radiodermatitis (RD) occurs in 95% of cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy. At present, there is no effective treatment for the management of this complication of radiotherapy. Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a polyphenolic and biologically active natural compound with various pharmacological functions. The aim of this systematic review was to determine the efficacy of curcumin supplementation for reducing RD severity. This review complied with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in Cochrane library, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and MEDLINE databases. A total of seven studies comprising 473 cases and 552 controls were included in this review. Four studies demonstrated that curcumin supplementation had a beneficial effect on RD intensity. These data provide evidence for the potential clinical use of curcumin in supportive cancer care. Further large prospective and well-designed trials are warranted to exactly determine the "real effective extract, supplemental form and dose of curcumin" for RD prevention and treatment of patients receiving radiotherapy.

Intraoperative Fluorophores: An Update on 5-Aminolevulinic Acid and Sodium Fluorescein in Resection of Tumors of the Central Nervous System and Metastatic Lesions-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
INTRODUCTION
Recent advances in tumor visualization have improved the extent of resection (EOR) of primary and secondary tumors of the central nervous system, while limiting the morbidity and mortality of the surgery. One area of recent interest has been the use of intraoperative fluorophores for tumor visualization such as 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ala) and sodium fluorescein. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis on the utility of fluorophore administration and EOR with each fluorophore to update the current literature.
METHODS
We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on the use of intraoperative 5-ala or fluorescein between 2021 and 2023 using the PubMed, SCOPUS, and WOS databases. The initial search yielded 8688 results. After inclusion and exclusion criteria were met, 44 studies remained for review. A meta-analysis was performed to compare the EOR between studies for each fluorophore and to compare the presence of intraoperative fluorescence by tumor type. Odds ratios (OR) were calculated for gross total resection (GTR), and two-way ANOVA tests were performed to compare rates of intraoperative fluorescence by fluorophore and tumor type.
RESULTS
In all groups except low-grade glioma, fluorescence was present after 5-ala administration; fluorescence was present for all groups after fluorescein administration. Two-way ANOVA analysis for both fluorophores demonstrated no statistically significant difference in presence of fluorescence between type of tumor resected. Meta-analysis of EOR did show a higher, but not significant, rate of GTR in the 5-ala group compared to controls (OR = 1.29, 95% CI = 0.49; 3.37). In the fluorescein group, there were statistically significant higher odds of GTR compared to the control group (OR = 2.10, 95% CI = 1.43; 3.10, I = 0%).
CONCLUSIONS
Both 5-ala and sodium fluorescein demonstrated intraoperative fluorescence among various tumor types in both cranial and spinal tumors, as well as efficacy in improving EOR. Both fluorophores merit further investigation for use in surgery of CNS tumors.

BACKGROUND
To evaluate the diagnostic accuracies of indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence for identifying parathyroid glands during surgery and predicting the postoperative function.
METHODS
From six databases, 21 studies were finally included in the study. True-positive, true-negative, false-positive, and false-negative data were extracted for the analysis. The quality of each study was analyzed using the QUADAS-2 tool.
RESULTS
The sensitivity of ICG-based parathyroid gland identification was 0.9380 (95% CI [0.9003, 0.9621]). The diagnostic odds ratio for ICG-based prediction of parathyroid gland function was 54.5652 [13.2059, 225.4570]. The area under the summary receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.909. Fluorescence intensity-based prediction presented higher diagnostic accuracy than that of score-based prediction. The incidence of postoperative hypoparathyroidism was higher in the group with a zero ICG score compared to the high scored group.
CONCLUSIONS
Identification of parathyroid gland and prediction of postoperative function using ICG are valuable to patients undergoing thyroidectomy or parathyroidectomy.
