Fungal rhinosinusitis (FRS) includes non-invasive and invasive subtypes with the latter having significant morbidity and mortality. This systematic review aims to identify the imaging features most correlated with invasive fungal rhinosinusitis (IFRS) and present a checklist of these features to aid diagnosis. PubMed, Embase, CENTRAL, and Science Direct were searched from inception to May 2023, in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. Primary research articles published in English describing the imaging features of IFRS were included. The systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. Forty-eight articles were identified for inclusion. Six studies examined radiological features in acute invasive fungal rhinosinusitis (AIFRS), and 9 studies of chronic invasive fungal rhinosinusitis (CIFRS). A majority of studies did not specify whether IFRS cases were acute or chronic. On CT, bony erosion and mucosal thickening were the most common features. Other features include nasal soft tissue thickening, nasal cavity opacification, opacification of the affected sinus, and perisinus soft tissue infiltration. Extra-sinus extension was commonly observed on MRI, most often invading intraorbitally and intracranially. Other sites of extra-sinus extension included the cavernous sinus, pterygopalatine fossa, infratemporal fossa, masticator space, and facial soft tissue. IFRS is a condition with potential for high morbidity and mortality. Several radiological features are highly suggestive of IFRS. Early identification of high-risk radiological features using a checklist may aid prompt diagnosis and early treatment. Future research investigating the radiological differentiation between IFRS and other significant pathology including bacterial orbital cellulitis would be beneficial.

Oral food perception depends on somatosensory information that includes taste and can be modified by oral components and/or functions such as mastication. The purpose of this study was to describe the interplay between oral health, mastication and taste. A review according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses checklist was conducted on 615 publications found by both PubMed and backward research. Thirty-one studies have been included. The results showed that the decline in taste ability observed during the healthy ageing process could be potentiated by the deterioration of oral health and poor oral hygiene. Prosthetic treatment could modify taste ability and oral food perception. A palatal covering with removable dentures can have an impact on taste perception which may depend on taste modality. During the mastication sequence, taste is apparently scattered throughout the oral cavity, probably through saliva. The deterioration of masticatory function modifies taste perception. Oral health and oral care should consider factors influencing patients' food perception and relations between taste and mastication. Therefore, dentists may modulate these factors to improve food perception and patients' eating pleasure and quality of life.

BACKGROUND
Of the various malocclusions, unilateral posterior crossbite has often been associated to skeletal and muscular asymmetrical growth and function.
OBJECTIVE
To assess, by systematically reviewing the literature, the association between unilateral posterior crossbite (UPCB) and morphological and/or functional asymmetries (i.e. skeletal, masticatory muscle electromyographic (EMG) performance, bite force, muscle thickness, and chewing cycle asymmetries).
MATERIALS AND METHODS
A literature survey covering the period from January 1965 to June 2015 was performed. Two reviewers extracted the data independently and assessed the quality of the studies.
RESULTS
The search strategy resulted in 2184 citations, of which 45 met the inclusion criteria. The scientific and methodological quality of these studies was medium-low, irrespective of the association reported. In several studies, posterior crossbite is reported to be associated to asymmetries in mandibular skeletal growth, EMG activity, and the chewing cycle. Fewer data are available on bite force and masticatory muscle thickness.
CONCLUSIONS
The relationship between unilateral posterior crossbite and skeletal asymmetry is still unresolved. To date, most of the studies available report a skeletal asymmetric growth. EMG activity of masticatory muscles is different between crossbite and non-crossbite sides. Subjects with UPCB show smaller bite force than non-crossbite subjects. There is no consistency of studies reporting masticatory muscle thickness asymmetry in UPCB subjects. UPCB is associated to an increase in the reverse chewing cycle. The literature available on the subject is of medium-low scientific and methodological quality, irrespective of the association reported. Further investigations with higher sample size, well-defined diagnostic criteria, rigorous scientific methodologies, and long-term control are needed.

PURPOSE
This critical review summarizes the current knowledge of the structural and functional characteristics of periodontal mechanoreceptors, and understands their role in the signal pathways and functional motor control.
METHOD
A systematic review of the literature was conducted. Original articles were searched through Pubmed, Cochrane Central database and Embase until january 2016.
RESULT
1466 articles were identified through database searching and screened by reviewing the abstracts. 160 full-text were assessed for eligibility, and after 109 exclusion, 51 articles were included in the review process. Studies selected by the review process were mainly divided in studies on animal and studies on humans. Morphological, histological, molecular and electrophysiological studies investigating the periodontal mechanoreceptors in animals and in humans were included, evaluated and described.
CONCLUSION
Our knowledge of the periodontal mechanoreceptors, let us conclude that they are very refined neural receptors, deeply involved in the activation and coordination of the masticatory muscles during function. Strictly linked to the rigid structure of the teeth, they determine all the functional physiological and pathological processes of the stomatognathic system. The knowledge of their complex features is fundamental for all dental professionists. Further investigations are of utmost importance for guiding the technological advances in the respect of the neural control in the dental field.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) affect the muscles of mastication, the temporomandibular joint, and associated structures. They are generally classified as muscular or articular and are the main cause of pain in the orofacial region, eventually causing psychological problems. However, the real burden of psychological disorders is unknown.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the prevalence of psychological disorders in patients with TMDs.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
The study was conducted through a bibliographic search carried out without initial limit until July 2021 in the following electronic databases: MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, and PsycINFO. Clinical observational studies investigating depression and somatization in patients with TMD diagnosed by the Diagnostic Research for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) criteria in muscular, articular, and disc disorders were included. A descriptive analysis of the included studies and a meta-analysis for the prevalence data were performed for the synthesis of evidence.
RESULTS
A total of 2320 studies were found, of which 48 complete articles were assessed for eligibility and 22 were included in the analysis. The general prevalence of depression and moderate and severe somatization in patients diagnosed with TMD was estimated at 43.0% (95% confidence interval (CI), 36.0% to 50.0%) and 60.0% (95% CI 52.0 - 67, 0%). The average overall score for depression was estimated at 0.92 (95% CI, 0.69-1.15), being classified as moderate depression. The average overall score for somatization was estimated at 1.09 (95% CI, 0.81-1.36), being classified as severe somatization. All analyses showed high heterogeneity (I>90%). Based on the quality assessment, 80.9% of studies included in the review had low to moderate risk of bias.
CONCLUSIONS
Patients with TMDs who seek clinical care show a high prevalence of depression and somatization.

BACKGROUND
Betel quid (BQ) is the fourth most commonly used psychoactive substance and its use is highly prevalent among southeast Asian countries due to the influence of psychosocial, behavioral, and environmental factors. As a result, even young children and women are becoming addicted and find it difficult to achieve long-term abstinence. Systematic research addressing the influence of behavioral and psychosocial factors on BQ chewing is scarce, hence pointing to the need for understanding the interplay of these factors to develop tailored intervention strategies for BQ cessation.
OBJECTIVE
The objective of this systematic review is to assess various behavioral and psychosocial risk factors from pre-existing literature that lead individuals to initiate and/or maintain BQ chewing in developed and developing countries.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
The electronic retrieval systems and databases PUBMED [MEDLINE], EMBASE, SCOPUS, WEB OF SCIENCE, GOOGLE SCHOLAR, and SCIENCE DIRECT were searched independently by two authors for relevant articles from January 2011 to July 2021 using combinations of keywords. Primary studies published in English focusing on the behavioral and psychosocial risk factors for BQ chewing were included.
RESULTS
Out of the initial 264 articles searched, 12 articles met the selection criteria. Included studies addressed the influence of behavioral and psychosocial factors toward the initiation and/or maintenance of BQ chewing. Included studies reported that dependent BQ was not able to quit BQ chewing due to habituation, addiction, and withdrawal symptoms. Few social BQ chewers in Southeast Asian countries were not willing to initiate quitting as they considered AN as an important social and cultural identifier and claimed that they could not resist chewing in a peer group, and it has become part of their social life.
CONCLUSION
In the future, studies should take into consideration behavioral and psychosocial risk factors, which are major barriers toward successful quitting. These factors should be integrated into areca nut cessation guidelines, and there is a need to develop more comprehensive culture-specific intervention approaches to achieve long-term abstinence.

BACKGROUND
Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are manifested by soreness in the jaw joint area and jaw muscles, clicks or creaks when opening or closing the mouth. All these symptoms can be disabling and occur during chewing and when the patient yawns or speaks. Several classes of drugs are used to treat symptoms. This review aims to assess which drug suits the different signs.
METHODS
Pubmed, Web of Science and Lilacs were systematically searched until 01/02/2023. Clinical trials were selected that dealt with drugs used in temporomandibular dysfunction RESULTS: Out of 830 papers, eight studies were included. The Meta-Analysis with Continuous Outcomes with Pre-Calculated Effect Sizes resulted in the rejection that there is intergroup variability (p.0.74).
CONCLUSIONS
Treatment of orofacial pain is still a significant challenge for dentistry. We can conclude that there is no drug of first choice in the treatment of temporomandibular pain. However, the clinician must distinguish the type of pain and the aetioloic cause of the pain so that the patient can be treated and managed pharmacologically.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
The complete denture occlusal scheme may influence clinical performance and patient satisfaction. However, a consensus on which occlusal scheme should be used for complete denture users is lacking. As a result, many dentists choose the scheme based on their preferences and clinical experience.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this review was to assess the methodological quality and summarize the scientific evidence from secondary studies about the influence of occlusal schemes on the clinical performance of and patient satisfaction with complete dentures.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
Ten sources were surveyed according to the patient, intervention, comparison, outcome (PICO) strategy. Systematic reviews that evaluated the clinical performance and patient satisfaction (O) of rehabilitated edentulous patients with conventional complete dentures (P) under different occlusal schemes (I/C) were included. Methodological quality was assessed by using A MeaSurement Tool to Assess systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) 2 tool by 2 authors independently. The effect of each occlusal scheme in comparison with others was summarized and classified as positive, neutral, negative, or inconclusive based on the conclusions of the systematic review concerning clinical performance and patient satisfaction outcomes.
RESULTS
The search led to the inclusion of 10 systematic reviews. Seven were classified as of critically low, 2 as low, and 1 as moderate methodological quality. The following occlusal designs were included and analyzed: bilateral balanced occlusion, lingualized occlusion, canine guidance, group function, and monoplane occlusion. Bilateral balanced occlusion and canine guidance obtained satisfactory results for both outcomes. Lingualized occlusion showed a trend toward better results than other occlusal schemes for normal and resorbed ridges. Group function presented mainly inconclusive results, and monoplane occlusion did not deliver satisfactory outcomes.
CONCLUSIONS
The present overview concluded that occlusal schemes might interfere with the clinical performance of and patient satisfaction with complete dentures. Lingualized, bilateral balanced, and canine guidance are preferred compared with monoplane occlusion, but lingualized occlusion tends to show better results in some reviews. However, the results should be carefully considered because of the low quality of the systematic reviews included.

OBJECTIVES
This systematic review compared platelet concentrates (PCs) versus hyaluronic acid (HA) or saline/Ringer's solution injections as treatments of temporomandibular osteoarthritis and disc displacement in terms of pain and maximum mouth opening (MMO).
METHODS
PubMed, Cochrane, and Scopus were searched up to March 6, 2020. Inclusion criteria were randomized clinical trials (RCTs). Exclusion criteria were case series, observational studies, animal studies, and reviews. The Effective Public Health Practice Project (EPHPP) quality assessment tool was used to assess the risk of bias in the included studies. The weighted mean difference was used to compare the results.
RESULTS
Nine RCTs were included with a total of 407 patients. The numbers of joints treated were 262, 112, and 112 in the PC, HA, and saline groups, respectively. The quality of studies was rated as strong in 4 studies, moderate in 4 studies, and weak in 1 study. The meta-analysis revealed that PCs decreased pain visual analogue scale (VAS) scores compared to HA by an average of -1.11 (CI, -1.62 to -0.60; P < 0.0001) and -0.57 (CI, -1.55 to 0.41; P = 0.26) at 3 and 12 mo follow-up respectively. Also, the average decrease in pain scores with PC compared to saline was -1.33 (CI, -2.61 to -0.06; P = 0.04), -2.07 (CI, -3.46 to -0.69; P = 0.003), and -2.71 (CI, -4.69 to -0.72; P = 0.008) at 3, 6, and 12 mo, respectively. Regarding MMO measurements, PC was comparable to HA, but it was significantly better than saline after 3 and 6 mo [2.9 mm (CI,1.47 to 4.3; P < 0.0001), and 1.69 mm (CI, 0.13 to 3.25; P = 0.03) respectively].
CONCLUSION
PC reduces pain VAS scores compared to HA during the first 3 m after treatment, and when compared to saline, it reduces pain and increases MMO for longer durations. However, due to differences between groups regarding PC preparation protocols and study heterogeneity, further standardized RCTs are required.
KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER STATEMENT
This study provides researchers and clinicians with quantitative and qualitative analyses of the current evidence regarding the clinical outcomes of platelet concentrate injections in the treatment of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis and disc displacement in terms of pain control and maximum mouth opening.

BACKGROUND
Good oral health is an important part of healthy ageing, yet there is limited understanding regarding the status of oral health care for older people globally. This study reviewed evidence (policies, programs, and interventions) regarding oral health care for older people.
METHODS
A systematic search of six databases for published and grey literature in the English language by the end of April 2022 was undertaken utilising Arksey and O'Malley's scoping review framework.
RESULTS
The findings from oral health policy documents (n = 17) indicated a lack of priorities in national health policies regarding oral health care for older people. The most common oral health interventions reported in the published studies (n = 62) included educational sessions and practical demonstrations on oral care for older adults, nurses, and care providers. Other interventions included exercises of facial muscles and the tongue, massage of salivary glands, and application of chemical agents, such as topical fluoride.
CONCLUSION
There is currently a gap in information and research around effective oral health care treatments and programs in geriatric dental care. Efforts must be invested in developing guidelines to assist both dental and medical healthcare professionals in integrating good oral health as part of healthy ageing. Further research is warranted in assessing the effectiveness of interventions in improving the oral health status of the elderly and informing approaches to assist the integration of oral health into geriatric care.
