Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPSs) and mucolipidosis II and III (ML II and III) often manifest with orofacial (progressive) abnormalities, which may have a major impact on quality of life. However, because these patients have multiple somatic health issues, orofacial problems are easily overlooked in clinical practice and available literature on this topic solely consists of case reports, small case series, and small cohort studies. The aim of this systematic review was to gain more insight in the nature and extent of orofacial abnormalities in MPS, ML II, and III. A systematic review of all previously published articles addressing orofacial abnormalities in MPS, ML II, and III was performed. Both clinical studies and case reports were included. Outcome was the described orofacial abnormalities, subdivided into abnormalities of the face, maxilla, mandible, soft tissues, teeth, and occlusion. The search resulted in 57 articles, describing orofacial features in 340 patients. Orofacial abnormalities were present in all subtypes of MPS, ML II, and III, and consisted of thickened lips, a hypoplastic midface, a high-arched palate, hypoplastic condyles, coronoid hyperplasia, macroglossia, gingival hyperplasia, thick dental follicles, dentigerous cysts, misshapen teeth, enamel defects, and open bite. Orofacial abnormalities are present in all subtypes of MPS, ML II, and III. As orofacial abnormalities may cause complaints, evaluation of orofacial health should be part of routine clinical care.

BACKGROUND
Rare diseases (RD) are those that present a lower prevalence than 5 cases per 10.000 population. The main objective of this review was to study the effect on oral health in rare diseases, while the secondary objective of the study is theme upgrade.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
Comparative observational case-control studies were analysed and a systematic review was conducted in PubMed. Each rare disease listed on the statistical data record of the Health Portal of the Ministry of Equality, Health and Social Policies Board of Andalusia was associated with "oral health". The variables studied included dental, oral mucosa and occlusion alterations, oral pathologies (caries, periodontal disease) and other alterations (mouth breathing, parafunctional habits, etc). A bias analysis of the variable caries was conducted.
RESULTS
Six RD were selected through our inclusion and exclusion criteria (hypogammaglobulinemia, Rett syndrome, Marfan syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, cystic fibrosis and Cri du chat syndrome) in a total of 8 publications, of which four trials were classified as high risk of bias and one of them as medium risk. There were not trials with low risk of bias.
CONCLUSIONS
The main statistically significant differences found by Syndrome compared to a control group were in Hypogammaglobulinemia with a greater tendency to enamel hypoplasia and dry mouth. The Rett syndrome had, as well, a greater tendency to an anterior open bite, ogival palate, bruxism, mouth breathing and tongue thrusting. Prader-Willi syndrome had a tendency of dental erosion, and Cri du chat syndrome showed a higher association to Tannerella forsythia.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the scientific evidence on the short- and long-term effects of orthodontic correction of anterior open bite (AOB) using skeletal anchorage (SA). Clinical studies on the use of SA for AOB in patients with permanent dentition, or at least 12 years of age, were searched. Short- and long-term (≥2 years) outcomes were collected. Mean differences were calculated from pooled data. Twenty-four eligible articles with a total of 362 subjects were selected for inclusion in the meta-analysis. There was a significant increase in overbite (3.88 mm, P < 0.001) and maxillary molar intrusion (-2.15 mm, P < 0.001). The mandible showed counterclockwise rotation with anterosuperior chin movement (all P < 0.001). Long term, the decrease in overbite was 19.9% and decrease in molar intrusion was 22.9%. The decrease in the mandibular projection was 14.6% for ANB (A-point-nasion-B-point angle) and 46.2% for mandibular anteroposterior position. The overall risk of bias in the included studies was rated as moderate to high, and publication bias existed for several key variables. SA for maxillary molar intrusion effectively improved dental and skeletal outcomes, but there was a long-term decrease in overbite and maxillary molar position. The variable data quality, heterogeneity, and publication bias in investigated outcomes are limitations in interpreting the findings.

BACKGROUND
Oral breathing, nasal obstruction and airway space reduction are usually reported as associated to allergic rhinitis. They have been linked to altered facial patterns and dento-skeletal changes. However, no firm correlation based on the evidence has been established. This systematic review has been undertaken to evaluate the available evidence between malocclusion and allergic rhinitis in pediatric patients.
METHODS
The research refers to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocols (PRISMA-P) guidelines, databases (Medline, Cochrane Library, Pubmed, Embase and Google Scholar) were screened, the quality was evaluated through Quality Assessment of Diagnosfic Accuracy Studies (QUADAS-2).
RESULTS
The articles selected (6 out of initial 1782) were divided on the basis of the study design: two observational randomized study, three case-control study, one descriptive cross-sectional study, and one longitudinal study. A total of 2188 patients were considered. Different results were reported as related to allergic rhinitis ranging from a higher incidence of dental malocclusion, to an increase of palatal depth, and in posterior cross-bite about anterior open-bite and to longer faces and shorter maxillas.
CONCLUSIONS
Most of the studies selected found a rise in the prevalence of both malocclusion and allergic rhinitis in children. However, the level of bias is high, impaired by a poor design and no conclusive evidence can be drawn.

This meta-analysis aims to compare Apert syndrome (AS) patients with non-AS populations (not clinically or genetically diagnosed) on craniofacial cephalometric characteristics (CCC) to combine publicly available scientific information while also improving the validity of primary study findings. A comprehensive search was performed in the following databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Medline, and Web of Science, an article published between 1st January 2000 to October 17th, 2021. PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines were followed to carry out this systematic review. We used the PECO system to classify people with AS based on whether or not they had distinctive CCC compared to the non-AS population. Following are some examples of how PECO has been used: People with AS are labeled P; clinical or genetic diagnosis of AS is labeled E; individuals without AS are labeled C; CCC of AS are labeled O. Using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality-Assessment-Scale, independent reviewers assessed the articles' methodological quality and extracted data. 13 studies were included in the systematic review. 8 out of 13 studies were score 7-8 in NOS scale, which indicated that most of the studies were medium to high qualities. Six case-control studies were analyzed for meta-analysis. Due to the wide range of variability in CCC, we were only able to include data from at least three previous studies. There was a statistically significant difference in N-S-PP (I: 76.56%; P = 0.014; CI 1.27 to - 0.28) and Greater wing angle (I: 79.07%; P = 0.008; CI 3.07-1.17) between AS and control subjects. Cleft palate, anterior open bite, crowding in the upper jaw, and hypodontia occurred more frequently among AS patients. Significant shortening of the mandibular width, height and length is the most reported feature in AS patients. CT scans can help patients with AS decide whether to pursue orthodontic treatment alone or to have their mouth surgically expanded. The role of well-informed orthodontic and maxillofacial practitioners is critical in preventing and rehabilitating oral health issues.

Outcomes and Stability of Anterior Open Bite Treatment with Skeletal Anchorage in Non-Growing Patients and Adults Compared to the Results of Orthognathic Surgery Procedures: A Systematic Review.

The objective of this review is to evaluate, on the basis of the available literature, if anterior open bite (AOB) can be successfully treated with the intrusion of molar teeth using skeletal anchorage in non-growing patients and adults and if this treatment modality provides comparable results to those obtained by orthognathic surgery procedures.
METHODS
A systematic review of published data in major databases from 2000 to 2021 was performed.
RESULTS
In total, 92 articles were included in title and abstract screening, and only 16 articles (11 concerning AOB correction by molar intrusion with skeletal anchorage, and five considering AOB treatment by orthognathic surgical intervention) qualified for thorough data extraction and analysis.
CONCLUSIONS
On the basis of this review, it seems to be possible to obtain successful results for AOB treatment in non-growing patients and adults by means of the intrusion of molar teeth with skeletal anchorage. However, due to the different methods of assessing treatment outcomes used by different authors, it is not possible to state conclusively whether the treatment of AOB by means of molar intrusion with skeletal anchorage provides long-term results that are comparable to orthognathic surgery procedures.

PURPOSE
This systematic review aimed to assess the effects of orthopedic functional appliances for anterior open bite (AOB) in primary or mixed dentition children.
METHODS
A search for randomized controlled trials (RCT) was conducted in November 2020 in electronic databases with no data or language restrictions. Primary outcomes were skeletal cephalometric variables and adverse events. We used the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool to assess methodological quality and the GRADE approach to assess the certainty of the evidence.
RESULTS
We identified five RCTs (220 participants). Very low certainty evidence showed an improvement in overbite (mean difference [MD] 3.60; 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.63-4.57) and in the angulation of the upper incisors to the palatal plane (MD 3.70; 95% CI 0.85-6.55) with Frankel's functional regulator, compared to no treatment. There was no difference in the measured cephalometric variables when comparing removable palatal crib to fixed palatal crib, bonded spurs, and chin cup. When comparing removable versus magnetic bite blocks, a beneficial effect was observed in overbite, overjet, skeletal anteroposterior angular measurements, and skeletal vertical linear measures in the magnetic group. No adverse events were reported.
CONCLUSION
There was insufficient evidence to infer the effects of these treatments for AOB, and high-quality RCTs are needed to increase the estimated effects.

OBJECTIVE
The present systemic review was conducted with the main purpose to evaluate the quantitative effects of orthognathic surgeries, extraction versus non-extraction treatment, and the type of malocclusion in the stability of anterior open-bite (AOB) correction over the long-term.
METHODS
The systematic search for studies was conducted through MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, Scopus, PsychINFO, various key journals, and review articles; November 30, 2016, was the last date for the search. The Quality Assessment Tool for Quantitative Studies was used to grade the methodological quality of the studies.
RESULTS
The present review included 14 studies. Stability of the corrected AOB ranged from 61.9% to 100%. The studies with orthognathic surgeries showed a stability of 70-100%. The studies without orthognathic surgeries showed the stability of 61.9-96.7%. All of the studies were retrospective. The mean change in AOB before (T1) and after treatment (T2-T1) was 0.1 mm to 6.93 mm and the mean change in overbite from T2 to T3 (T3-T2) was -0.06 mm to 2.5 mm.
CONCLUSION
Studies with orthognathic surgeries presented with high amount of long-term stability in corrected AOB. No significant difference was noticed in relation to the type of malocclusion and extraction or non-extraction cases.

BACKGROUND/AIM
Dental trauma (DT) occurs frequently in children and adolescents. Therefore, understanding the factors associated with its occurrence in these age groups is important to establish specific preventive measures. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships of lip coverage, overjet, and open bite to dental trauma in Brazilian children and adolescents.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
The review protocol was registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42020156290) and the bibliographic search was performed in nine electronic databases until July 2020. The studies included were observational, performed in Brazil, with healthy children and adolescents (0-19 years old), and without the restriction of date or language. Two reviewers assessed the individual risk of bias of the eligible studies with a standardized checklist. The meta-analyses were stratified by dentition stage and age range using fixed or random effects, odds ratio (OR) as the effect measure, and 95% confidence interval. The heterogeneity across studies was assessed with the I² test and the GRADE approach assessed the certainty of evidence.
RESULTS
The search presented 2493 initial results, from which 55 met the eligibility criteria and were included. Most studies (67%) presented a low risk of bias and were published between 2000 and 2019. Children and adolescents with inadequate lip coverage are 1.86-2.36 times more likely to suffer from DT, while those with increased overjet are 1.94-3.11 times more likely. Children with primary dentitions and anterior open bites are 1.76 (95% CI: 1.20-2.59) times more likely to suffer from DT. The certainty of evidence varied from very low to moderate.
CONCLUSIONS
Inadequate lip coverage, increased overjet, and anterior open bite are associated with the occurrence of dental trauma in Brazilian children and adolescents.

INTRODUCTION
Bonded spurs, fixed or removable palatal cribs have been used to treat anterior open bite (AOB) in growing children. Different conclusions have been brought out by different authors. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effect of bonded spurs, fixed and removable palatal cribs in the early treatment of AOB.
METHODS
A comprehensive electronic search was carried out through PubMed, Embase (via Ovid), MEDLINE (via Ovid), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science up to May 1, 2022. This meta-analysis was performed in accordance with the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions. The work was carried out by 2 reviewers in duplicate and independently, including electronic searching, data extracting, risk of bias assessment, quality of evidence grading, heterogeneity and statistical power analysis, and eligibility evaluation of the retrieved articles.
RESULTS
Four studies out of 181 articles were recruited in the meta-analysis after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results showed that bonded lingual spurs and fixed palatal crib or spurs produced similar overbite changes (mean difference, -0.32; 95% confidence interval, -1.06 to 0.43; P = 0.41; I = 27%; meta power = 0.099). Fixed palatal crib and removable palatal crib also exhibited comparable effects in correcting AOB (mean difference, -0.02; 95% confidence interval, -0.90 to 0.86; P = 0.96; I = 0%; meta power = 0.2182). The quality of evidence about these 2 outcomes assessed with GRADE (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations) was low.
CONCLUSIONS
Bonded lingual spurs, fixed palatal crib or spurs, and removable palatal crib had similar effects in the early treatment of AOB. Because the number of included studies was limited and only the overbite changes before and after treatment were assessed, more clinical randomized controlled studies with longer follow-ups are needed to get more clinically significant advice.
