Thyroid function is closely associated with neuropsychological functions, including mental state and cognitive functions. Although thyroid function is routinely examined in persons with depressive symptom, the association between subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) and depression remains inconclusive. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the risk of depression in persons with SCH. The PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases were searched up to August 2018. The primary outcome was the prevalence of depression, as evaluated by various types of self-reported depression scales. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated to compare the risk of depression between persons with SCH and those with euthyroidism. Twenty-one studies were included in the systematic review, with a total of 103,375 subjects from 7 studies being pooled for the meta-analysis to evaluate the risk of depression. The meta-analysis showed that persons with SCH had a significantly elevated risk of depression than persons with euthyroidism (OR = 1.78, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.11-2.86, = 0.02). No publication bias was found, as indicated by Egger's test ( = -0.49, = 0.647) and Begg's test ( = -0.15, = 0.881). In addition, the funnel plot showed a symmetric distribution. This meta-analysis demonstrated that SCH was positively associated with the risk of depression, especially in persons above 50 years of age, suggesting it is necessary to pay close attention to depressive symptoms in persons with SCH.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS
Numerous studies have found an association between vitamin deficiency and thyroid disorders (TD). The presence of anti-parietal cell antibodies is indicative of reduced ability to absorb vitamin B12. Thus, this study reviewed the existing studies with the objective of assessing differences in the serum levels of vitamin B12 among patients with and without TD, the frequency of vitamin B12 deficiency in patients with TD, and the presence of anti-parietal cell antibodies in patients with TD.
METHODS
A meta-analysis of random-effects model was conducted to calculate pooled frequencies, mean differences (MD), and their respective 95% confidence intervals (CI). We identified 64 studies that met our inclusion criteria (n = 28597).
RESULTS
We found that patients with hypothyroidism had lower vitamin B12 levels than healthy participants (MD: -60.67 pg/mL; 95% CI: -107.31 to -14.03 pg/mL; p = 0.01). No significant differences in vitamin B12 levels were observed between healthy participants and patients with hyperthyroidism (p = 0.78), autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) (p = 0.22), or subclinical hypothyroidism (SH) (p = 0.79). The frequencies of vitamin B12 deficiency among patients with hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, SH, and AITD were 27%, 6%, 27%, and 18%, respectively.
CONCLUSIONS
Patients with hypothyroidism had lower levels of vitamin B12 than healthy participants. No significant differences were observed between vitamin B12 levels and hyperthyroidism, AITD, or SH.

INTRODUCTION
It is still uncertain whether the risk of dementia and cognitive impairment is related to thyroid disease. we carried out a meta-analysis and systematic review (PROSPERO: CRD42021290105) on the associations between thyroid disease and the risks of dementia and cognitive impairment.
METHODS
We searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library for studies published up to August 2022. The overall relative risk (RRs) and its 95% confidence interval (CIs) were calculated in the random-effects models. Subgroup analyses and meta-regression were conducted to explore the potential source of heterogeneity among studies. We tested and corrected for publication bias by funnel plot-based methods. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) or Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) scale were used to evaluate the study quality of longitudinal studies and cross-sectional studies, respectively.
RESULTS
A total of 15 studies were included in our meta-analysis. Our meta-analysis showed that hyperthyroidism (RR = 1.14, 95% CI = 1.09-1.19) and subclinical hyperthyroidism (RR = 1.56, 95% CI = 1.26-1.93) might be associated with an elevated risk for dementia, while hypothyroidism (RR = 0.93, 95% CI = 0.80-1.08) and subclinical hypothyroidism (RR = 0.84, 95% CI = 0.70-1.01) did not affect the risk.
DISCUSSION
Hyperthyroidism and subclinical hyperthyroidism are predictors of dementia.

OBJECTIVE
Studies have suggested that patients with thyroid dysfunction may have an increased risk of developing Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the results from existing studies are inconsistent. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the association of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism with risk of PD using the method of systematic review and meta-analysis.
METHODS
Potentially eligible studies were identified from Medline and EMBASE databases from inception to December 2021 using search strategy that comprised of terms for "Thyroid" and "Parkinson's Disease". Eligible cohort study must consist of one cohort of patients with hypothyroidism/hyperthyroidism and another cohort of individuals without hypothyroidism/hyperthyroidism. Then, the study must report effect estimates with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) comparing incident PD between the groups. Eligible case-control studies must include cases with PD and controls without PD. Then, the study must explore their history of hypothyroidism/hyperthyroidism. Odds ratio (OR) with 95% CIs of the association between presence of hypothyroidism/hyperthyroidism and PD must be reported. Point estimates with standard errors were retrieved from each study and were combined together using the generic inverse variance method.
RESULTS
A total of 3,147 articles were identified. After two rounds of independent review by three investigators, 3 cohort studies and 6 case-control studies met the eligibility criteria and were included into the meta-analysis. Pooled analysis showed an increased likelihood of PD in both patients with hypothyroidism (pooled OR 1.56; 95%CI, 1.38 - 1.77; with moderate heterogeneity, I 66.9%) and patients with hyperthyroidism (pooled OR 1.57; 95%CI, 1.40 - 1.77; with insignificant heterogeneity, I 0.0%). Funnel plots for both meta-analyses were fairly symmetric, which did not indicate presence of publication bias.
CONCLUSION
This systematic review and meta-analysis found a significant association of both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism with an increased risk of PD.

The impact of levothyroxine therapy on the pregnancy, neonatal and childhood outcomes of subclinical hypothyroidism during pregnancy: An updated systematic review, meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis.
BACKGROUND
Several systematic reviews and meta-analyses have investigated the effect of levothyroxine (LT4) therapy in pregnant women with subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH). However, all these studies have clinical or methodological problems (such as adopting the old 2011 American Thyroid Association [ATA] diagnostic criteria, directly combining randomized controlled trials [RCTs] and cohort studies for meta-analysis, and so on), and cannot provide accurate and satisfactory results. Thus, we performed this updated systematic review, meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis (TSA) to assess the effect of LT4 therapy in pregnant women with SCH, with the goal of providing more accurate and reliable evidence for clinical practice.
METHODS
We searched nine databases from inception to February 2022. The search strategy targeted the RCTs and cohort studies on pregnancy, neonatal and childhood outcomes following LT4 treatment in pregnant women with SCH based on the new 2017 ATA diagnostic criteria. We performed meta-analyses of RCTs and cohort studies separately, and further performed meta-analyses by excluding studies with high risk of bias. TSA was performed to test whether the current evidence was sufficient, and the quality of evidence was evaluated using the GRADE method.
RESULTS
A total of 9 RCTs and 13 cohort studies comprising 11273 pregnant women with SCH were included. There were no statistically significant differences between LT4 group and control group in all primary and secondary outcomes, such as preterm delivery (RR=0.46, 95%CI: 0.19-1.09, =0.08, I 65%), miscarriage (RR=0.36, 95%CI: 0.13-1.03, =0.06, I 38%), gestational hypertension (RR=0.91, 95%CI: 0.58-1.43, =0.69, I 0%), preeclampsia (RR=1.10, 95%CI: 0.61-1.97, =0.76, I 0%), gestational diabetes (RR=0.80, 95%CI: 0.51-1.25, =0.32, I 34%), and so on. TSA showed that the results for all outcomes were insufficient and inconclusive. According to GRADE, the evidences for four outcomes (miscarriage, gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes, and small for gestational age) were rated as moderate quality, while the evidences for the other outcomes were rated as low or very low quality.
CONCLUSION
Unlike previous systematic reviews and meta-analyses, our study found no evidence of benefit of LT4 therapy on pregnancy, neonatal and childhood outcomes in pregnant women with SCH.

OBJECTIVES
To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of interferon and endocrine side effects, including their incidence, evaluation, and management.
METHODS
PubMed was searched through March 7th, 2021, by 2 authors independently (LH Wang and H Zhao). Early phase I/II, phase III experimental trials, prospective and retrospective observational studies were included. Stata 16.0 (StataCorp LLC, 16.0) was the main statistical software for meta-analysis. The weighted incidence and risk ratio were estimated for primary thyroid disease and diabetes mellitus.
RESULTS
A total of 108 studies involving 46265 patients were included. Hypothyroidism was the most common thyroid disorder, followed by hyperthyroidism. IFN α+RBV treated patients experienced hypothyroidism in 7.8% (95%CI, 5.9-9.9), which was higher than IFN α (5.2%; 95%CI, 3.7-6.8) and IFN β (7.0%; 95%CI, 0.06-23.92). IFN α+RBV treated patients experienced hyperthyroidism in 5.0% (95%CI, 3.6-6.5), which was higher than IFN α (3.5%; 95%CI, 2.5-4.8) and IFN β (3.4%; 95%CI, 0.9-7.5). The summary estimated incidence of painless thyroiditis was 5.8% (95%CI, 2.8-9.8) for IFN α, and 3.5% (95%CI,1.9-5.5) for IFN α+RBV. The summary estimated incidence of diabetes was 1.4% (95%CI, 0.3-3.1) for IFN, 0.55% (95%CI, 0.05-1.57) for IFN α, 3.3% (95%CI,1.1-6.6) for IFN α+RBV.
CONCLUSIONS
Our meta-analysis shows a high incidence of endocrine adverse events provoked by IFN, further reinforced by combined RBV treatment.

BACKGROUND
It is currently uncertain whether primary hypothyroidism is associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We performed a meta-analysis of relevant studies to quantify the magnitude of association between primary hypothyroidism and risk of NAFLD.
METHODS
We searched PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus databases from January 2000 to March 2018 using predefined keywords to identify observational cross-sectional, case-control, and longitudinal studies in which NAFLD was diagnosed by imaging or biopsy. Data from selected studies were extracted and meta-analysis was performed using random-effects modeling.
RESULTS
A total of 12 cross-sectional and 3 longitudinal studies enrolling 44,140 individuals were included in the final analysis. Hypothyroidism (defined either by self-reported history of hypothyroidism with use of levothyroxine replacement therapy or by presence of abnormal thyroid function tests) was associated with an increased risk of prevalent NAFLD (n = 12 studies; random-effects odds ratio 1.42 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.15-1.77]; I = 51.2%), independently of age, sex, body mass index and other common metabolic risk factors. The magnitude of risk paralleled the underlying severity of NAFLD histology (n = 3 studies; random-effects odds ratio 2.73 [CI 1.90-3.93]; I = 0%), and tended to increase across the different definitions used for diagnosing hypothyroidism. Meta-analysis of data from the three longitudinal studies showed that subclinical hypothyroidism was not independently associated with risk of incident ultrasound-defined NAFLD over a median of 5 years (random-effects hazard ratio 1.29 [CI 0.89-1.86]; I = 83.9%). Sensitivity analyses did not alter these findings. Funnel plot did not reveal significant publication bias.
CONCLUSIONS
This large and updated meta-analysis shows that the presence of variably defined hypothyroidism is significantly associated with the presence and severity of NAFLD. However, the observational design of the eligible studies does not allow for proving causality.

CONTEXT
Graves' disease is the most prevalent cause of hyperthyroidism worldwide. Adiponectin, the most abundant adipokine, plays a significant role in a cluster of prevalent diseases connected to metabolic disorders.
OBJECTIVE
Although the association between adiponectin and Graves' disease has been studied, the existing data is inconsistent. Therefore, we conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the relationship between adiponectin levels and Graves' disease.
METHODS
We performed a systematic electronic search on PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus and Cochrane Library using predefined keywords. We used the NHLBI quality assessment tools to assess the included studies.
RESULTS
There were 11 studies involving 781 subjects included in our qualitative synthesis, while 6 studies were included in our quantitative synthesis. We observed significantly increased adiponectin levels in Graves' disease patients compared to controls (MD 2.983 [95% CI 0.138-5.828]) and hypothyroidism patients (MD 3.389 [95% CI 1.332-5.446]). Nevertheless, no significant MD was observed when comparing Graves' disease patients with and without Graves' ophthalmopathy (MD -27.124 [95% CI -88.893 - 34.645]).
CONCLUSIONS
Adiponectin levels were significantly higher in patients with Graves' disease compared to controls and hypothyroidism patients. However, patients with and without Graves' ophthalmopathy did not present a significant mean difference in adiponectin levels.

Hashimoto's encephalopathy (HE) is a rare not well understood, progressive and relapsing multiform disease, characterized by seizures, movement disorders, subacute cognitive dysfunction, psychiatric symptoms and responsiveness to steroid therapy. The disorder is generally associated with thyroid diseases and the most common feature is the presence of anti-thyroperoxidase antibodies (TPOAb). Patients are usually euthyroid or mildly hypothyroid at presentation. All age groups can be affected. The pathophysiology is still unclear, especially the link between elevated serum TPOAb and the encephalopathy. Most reported cases occurred in women and girls. Unspecific symptoms, non-pathognomonic laboratory neurophysiology and neuroimaging features make its diagnosis a real challenge for clinicians. The case of a 16 year old boy, with a clinical picture of HE associated with hypothyroidism, demonstrating an excellent response to high dose steroids is presented together with a systematic review of the literature.

BACKGROUND
The contribution of vitamin D to thyroid disorders has received paramount attention; however, results are mixed. Hence, we designed a systematic review and meta-analysis to obtain a definitive conclusion.
METHODS
The search included PubMed, ISI Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases up to March 2021 to collect available papers reporting the relationship between serum levels of vitamin D and thyroid disorders. The pooled effect was reported as weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI).
RESULTS
Out of 6123 datasets, 42 were eligible to get into this systematic review and meta-analysis. Serum vitamin D was markedly lower in autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD) (WMD - 3.1 ng/dl; 95% CI, - 5.57 to - 0.66; P = 0.013; I = 99.9%), Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) (WMD - 6.05 ng/dl; 95% CI, - 8.35 to - 3.75; P < 0.001; I = 91.0%) and hypothyroidism patients (WMD - 13.43 ng/dl; 95% CI, - 26.04 to - 0.81; P = 0.03; I = 99.5%), but not in subjects with Graves' disease (GD) (WMD - 4.14 ng/dl; 95% CI, - 8.46 to 0.17; P = 0.06; I = 97.5%).
CONCLUSIONS
Our findings suggested lower vitamin D levels in patients with hypothyroidism, AITD, and HT compared to healthy subjects. However, the link between serum vitamin D and GD was only significant among subjects ≥40 years old.
