BACKGROUND
Galectin (Gal) is considered a promising immune checkpoint molecule. More and more studies have shown that high expression levels of galectins in hematologic cancer are positively correlated with poor clinical prognosis. However, the exact prognostic significance of galectins remains unclear.
METHODS
PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were searched for studies addressing the correlation of galectin expression levels with prognosis of hematologic cancers. Stata software was used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI).
RESULT
Hematologic cancer patients with high galectin expression levels showed poor overall survival (OS, HR = 2.43, 95% CI: 1.95, 3.04), disease-free survival (DFS, HR = 3.29, 95% CI: 1.61, 6.71), and event-free survival (EFS, HR = 2.20, 95% CI: 1.47, 3.29) outcomes. Subgroup analysis revealed that high expression levels of galectins pointed to relatively poor OS in MDS (HR = 5.44, 95% CI: 2.09, 14.18), as compared to AML, CHL and CLL. No correlation was found between galectins and OS in NHL and MM. Among the three galectins, Gal-9 (HR = 3.60, 95% CI: 2.03, 6.38) showed higher correlation with poor prognosis than Gal-1 and Gal-3. In addition, use of peripheral blood (HR = 2.96, 95% CI: 2.07, 4.22) samples and qRT-PCR (HR = 2.80, 95% CI: 1.96, 4.01) method for galectin detection were shown to improve its prognostic correlation in hematologic cancers.
CONCLUSION
Meta-analysis revealed high expression of galectins was associated with poor prognosis in hematologic cancer patients and galectins can be considered a promising prognostic predictive marker.

The aim of this review was to integrate the current literature into a comprehensive evaluation of pulmonary metastasizing ameloblastoma (MA). Related articles, published since January 2000, were reviewed. The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and Web of Science databases were searched based on the PRISMA guidelines. Twenty-four studies, including 28 case reports, met the eligibility criteria. The mean ± standard deviation disease-free interval after primary treatment was 12.1 ± 9.3 years. Adjuvant therapy (surgery and chemoradiotherapy) is considered appropriate for pulmonary MA patients presenting with rapid progression or apparent pulmonary symptoms. The proportion of patients undergoing simple follow-up (observation) has increased rapidly in the past 10 years. Meanwhile, among the three treatment groups (observation, surgery, and adjuvant therapy), no significant difference was found in the efficacy (P = 0.081) or progression-free survival (P = 0.263). The 5-year and 10-year overall survival rates were 72.4% and 52.8%, respectively. This study provides insights that could help surgeons with the management of patients presenting with pulmonary MA.

BACKGROUND
Tumor budding (TB) has been investigated in several types of solid tumors. In oral cancer, studies show its association with survival. However, for its implementation in routine histological analyses, results with a high certainty of evidence are needed. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review is to explore the association between tumor budding and overall survival (OS), disease-specific survival (DSS), and disease-free survival (DFS) in oral cancer.
METHODS
A search was performed in Embase, PubMed, Scopus, Livivo, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. We adopted the following inclusion criteria: studies that evaluate tumor budding in oral cancer, that investigate survival, and presenting cohort design. We excluded reviews and studies without hazard-ratio (HR) data.
RESULTS
This systematic review included 22 studies and showed an association between TB and survival. High-grade TB is associated with a worse OS in univariate analysis (HR = 3.11; 95% CI: 2.06-4.69, p<0.01) and multivariate analysis (HR = 2.62; 95% CI: 1.64-4.20, p<0.01); with a poorer DSS in univariate (HR = 2.43; 95% CI: 1.94-3.03, p<0.01) and multivariate analysis (HR = 2.01; 95% CI: 1.43-2.83, p< 0.01); and with a worse DFS in univariate (HR = 1.94; 95% CI: 1.44-2.62, p<0.01) and multivariate analysis (HR = 2.15; 95% CI: 1.31-3.53, p< 0.01). Sensitivity analysis showed that the results are robust, and no significant publication bias was identified in univariate analysis for DFS (Egger's test: p = 0.94). The certainty of the evidence was graded as low or very low.
CONCLUSION
Our findings indicate that TB is an independent prognostic factor of OS, DSS, and DFS in oral cancer. However, further studies are needed to increase the certainty of the evidence.

Skin and wound blotting are non-invasive techniques used to sample the skin and wound surface chemistry, whereby a nitrocellulose membrane is applied to an intact or broken cutaneous surface to detect biomarkers. However, there has been no comprehensive review of the evidence for the techniques used and data obtained to date. The primary aim of this study was to review the utilities of surface blotting for the diagnosis and prognosis of physiological, pre-disease, and pathological states. The secondary aim was to summarise the procedural steps. A systematic literature search was conducted on 9 July 2021 using Medline, Embase, and Google Scholar databases. Investigators used McMaster's Critical Review Form for Quantitative Studies to assess quality, then performed a narrative synthesis reporting according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Twenty-five studies were reviewed. Eighteen studies were of good quality, and seven were of moderate quality. These studies conducted skin and wound blotting on 176 animals and 1546 humans. Studies reported physiological and pathological states for diagnosis and prediction of conditions, including skin tears, wound healing, biofilm detection, and skin barrier function. The four steps for blotting are surface preparation, blot preparation, application and removal of blot, and analysis. This review demonstrates that blotting can determine the skin and wound surface chemistry using a versatile and reproducible technique. However, future research is needed to validate the technique and skin biomarkers identified.

We developed and tested a Bayesian network(BN) model to predict ECT remission for depression, with non-response as a secondary outcome.
METHODS
We performed a systematic literature search on clinically available predictors. We combined these predictors with variables from a dataset of clinical ECT trajectories (performed in the University Medical Center Utrecht) to create priors and train the BN. Temporal validation was performed in an independent sample.
RESULTS
The systematic literature search yielded three meta-analyses, which provided prior knowledge on outcome predictors. The clinical dataset consisted of 248 treatment trajectories in the training set and 44 trajectories in the test set at the same medical center. The AUC for the primary outcome remission estimated on an independent validation set was 0.686 (95%CI 0.513-0.859) (AUC values of 0.505 - 0.763 observed in 5-fold cross validation of the model within the train set). Accuracy 0.73 (balanced accuracy 0.67), sensitivity 0.55, specificity 0.79, after temporal validation in the independent sample. Prior literature information marginally reduced CI width.
DISCUSSION
A BN model comprised of prior knowledge and clinical data can predict remission of depression after ECT with reasonable performance. This approach can be used to make outcome predictions in psychiatry, and offers a methodological framework to weigh additional information, such as patient characteristics, symptoms and biomarkers. In time, it may be used to improve shared decision-making in clinical practice.

As an important branch of artificial intelligence and machine learning, deep learning (DL) has been widely used in various aspects of cancer auxiliary diagnosis, among which cancer prognosis is the most important part. High-accuracy cancer prognosis is beneficial to the clinical management of patients with cancer. Compared with other methods, DL models can significantly improve the accuracy of prediction. Therefore, this article is a systematic review of the latest research on DL in cancer prognosis prediction. First, the data type, construction process, and performance evaluation index of the DL model are introduced in detail. Then, the current mainstream baseline DL cancer prognosis prediction models, namely, deep neural networks, convolutional neural networks, deep belief networks, deep residual networks, and vision transformers, including network architectures, the latest application in cancer prognosis, and their respective characteristics, are discussed. Next, some key factors that affect the predictive performance of the model and common performance enhancement techniques are listed. Finally, the limitations of the DL cancer prognosis prediction model in clinical practice are summarized, and the future research direction is prospected. This article could provide relevant researchers with a comprehensive understanding of DL cancer prognostic models and is expected to promote the research progress of cancer prognosis prediction.

BACKGROUND
Adenocarcinoma of the gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) has a poor prognosis and survival rates significantly decreases if lymph node metastasis is present. An extensive lymphadenectomy may increase chances of cure, but may also lead to further postoperative morbidity and mortality. Therefore, the optimal treatment of cardia cancer remains controversial. A systematic review of English publications dealing with adenocarcinoma of the cardia was conducted to elucidate patterns of nodal spread and prognostic implications.
METHODS
A systematic literature search based on PRISMA guidelines identifying relevant studies describing lymph node metastasis and the associated prognosis. Lymph node stations were classified according to the Japanese Gastric Cancer Association guidelines.
RESULTS
The highest incidence of metastasis is seen in the nearest regional lymph nodes, station no. 1-3 and additionally in no. 7, 9 and 11. Correspondingly the best survival is seen when metastasis remain in the most locoregional nodes and survival equally tends to decrease as the metastasis become more distant. Furthermore, the presence of lymph node metastasis significantly correlates to the TNM-stage. Incidences of metastasis in mediastinal lymph nodes are associated with poor survival.
CONCLUSION
The best survival rates is seen when lymph node metastasis remains locoregional and survival rates decreases when distant lymph node metastasis is present. The dissection of locoregional lymph nodes offers significantly therapeutic benefit, but larger and prospective studies are needed to evaluate the effect of dissecting distant and mediastinal lymph nodes.

The relationship between PLIN2 expression and prognosis, and clinicopathological significance of various cancers has been extensively studied, but the results are not completely consistent. This review followed the guidelines for systematic reviews of prognostic factors studies and was reported under the Preferred Reporting Program for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA). We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Google Academia for relevant articles up to September 2, 2022, and calculated the pooled hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) to determine the association between PLIN2 expression and the prognosis of various cancers. The meta-analysis ultimately included 17 studies. The quality of all included cohort studies was evaluated using the Quality in Prognosis Studies (QUIPS) tool, and an adaptation of Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) method was used to assess the certainty of the results. High expression of PLIN2 was associated with poorer overall survival (HR = 1.65; 95% CI = 1.14, 2.38; = 0.008), metastasis-free survival (HR = 1.48; 95% CI = 1.12, 1.94; = 0.005), progression-free survival (HR = 2.11; 95% CI = 1.55, 2.87; < 0.0005) and recurrence-free survival/relapse-free survival (HR = 2.21; 95% CI = 1.64, 2.98; < 0.0005) in cancers. The clinicopathological parameters of digestive system malignancies suggested that high expression of PLIN2 was notably associated with distant metastasis ( + ) (odds ratio (OR) = 3.37; 95% CI = 1.31, 8.67; = 0.012), lymph node metastasis ( + ) (OR = 1.61; 95% CI = 1.01, 2.54; = 0.004), and tumor stage (III-IV) (OR = 1.96; 95% CI = 1.24, 3.09; = 0.006). In summary, overexpression of PLIN2 is significantly associated with a poor prognosis in various human cancers, especially in respiratory and digestive malignancies. Thus, PLIN2 expression may be a potential prognostic biomarker in cancer patients.

BACKGROUND
With the development of imaging technology, an increasing number of multiple primary lung cancers (MPLC) are diagnosed in recent years. However, there is still ambiguity in the stage classification rules for patients with MPLC. Our purpose was to access the prognosis of synchronous and metachronous MPLC.
METHODS
A systematic literature search was performed on four databases (EBSCO, Pubmed, OVID and Springer) to obtain relevant articles. We used published hazard ratios (HRs) of overall survival (OS) if available or estimates from the published survival data.
RESULTS
There were 1796 patients with MPLC in 22 relevant studies, who were eligible for analysis. We found that the OS of patients with synchronous MPLC was inferior to the one of metachronous MPLC patients when starting from the diagnosis of the first metachronous tumor (HR 3.36, 95% CI 2.39-4.74; p<0.001). However, there was no difference when starting from the diagnosis of the second metachronous tumor (HR 1.19, 95% CI 0.86-1.66; p=0.29). From further analysis we found the OS of patients with MPLC was superior to that of patients with intrapulmonary metastasis (HR 2.66, 95% CI 1.30-5.44; p=0.007). Besides, we found no difference in OS between synchronous (HR 1.39, 95% CI 0.98-1.96; p=0.06) and metachronous (HR 1.05, 95% CI 0.75-1.47; p=0.77) patients, in spite of the histology. In terms of unilateral and bilateral MPLC patients, the OS had no difference either (HR 1.30, 95% CI 1.00-1.69; p=0.05).
CONCLUSION
We found that MPLC had better OS than the lung cancer patients with intrapulmonary metastasis. And despite the tumor-free interval, the OS for metachronous MPLC was as good as that for synchronous MPLC. Furthermore, there was no difference of OS in different subgroups, including histology and position.

Hepatoblastoma is the most common malignant liver tumor in children. On the other hand in the adult HB is very rare and characterized by unfavorable prognosis. A review of the entire literature was performed: 58 articles and 63 cases of HB were found. The patient's data were collected and analyzed. No correlation with hepatitis virus was found and AFP was elevated in most cases. Usually HB forms a large single mass in the liver and presents aggressive behavior, with local invasiveness and metastatic spread. The current median survival time is 5 months, with a 1-year survival rate near 30%. Surgical resection is the only curative treatment. However major liver resections or extensive demolitions of the adjacent organs are necessary. There are no standardized protocols in the multimodal approach to this tumor.
