BACKGROUND
Somatosensory modalities, such as touch, proprioception and haptic ability, greatly influence the achievement of developmental milestones for children. Describing somatosensory impairment, natural variability and typical or expected developmental changes across age groups will help establish frameworks for intervention in clinical populations. This systematic review aimed to determine how different somatosensory modalities develop across childhood into adolescence to use as a point of reference for children at risk of somatosensory impairment.
METHODS
Searches of five electronic databases were undertaken through EBSCO-host (MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, SPORTDiscus and ERIC) for studies measuring at least one somatosensory modality in typically developing individuals between birth and 18 years and analysed by age. Characteristics of studies were collected including country of origin, sample size, demographics and outcome measure used. Quality assessment and data extraction were performed by two independent reviewers.
RESULTS
Twenty three cross-sectional studies were included from a total of 188 articles retrieved: 8 examined aspects of touch, 5 proprioception and 10 haptic ability. Variability of study designs and variation in assessment tools precluded any formal meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS
Somatosensation matures through childhood into adolescence; however, the present review found the pattern of somatosensory development varied depending on the assessment tool used and the aspect of somatosensation being measured, making it difficult to describe typical performance. There is a need for comprehensive assessment batteries to measure the somatosensation, including touch, proprioception and haptic ability, of children at risk of somatosensory impairment to aid in the development of effective interventions.

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a musculoskeletal disorder that causes pain and increasing loss of function, resulting in reduced proprioceptive accuracy and balance. Therefore, the goal of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to evaluate the effectiveness of balance training on pain and functional outcomes in knee OA. "PubMed", "Scopus", "Web of Science", "Cochrane", and "Physiotherapy Evidence Database" were searched for studies conducted between January 2000 and December 2021. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated the effectiveness of balance training in knee OA, as well as its effects on pain and functional outcome measures, were included. Conference abstracts, case reports, observational studies, and clinical commentaries were not included. Meta-analysis was conducted for the common outcomes, i.e., Visual Analog Scale (VAS), The Timed Up and Go (TUG), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC). The PEDro scale was used to determine the quality of the included studies. This review includes 22 RCTs of which 17 articles were included for meta-analysis. The included articles had 1456 participants. The meta-analysis showed improvement in the VAS scores in the experimental group compared to the control group [ = 92%; mean difference= -0.79; 95% CI= -1.59 to 0.01; p<0.05] and for the WOMAC scores the heterogeneity ( ) was 81% with a mean difference of -0.02 [95% CI= -0.44 to 0.40; p<0.0001]. The TUG score was analyzed, the was 95% with a mean difference of -1.71 [95% CI= -3.09 to -0.33; p<0.0001] for the intervention against the control group. Balance training significantly reduced knee pain and improved functional outcomes measured with TUG. However, there was no difference observed in WOMAC. Although due to the heterogeneity of the included articles the treatment impact may be overestimated. The current systematic review was registered in PROSPERO on 7th October 2021 (registration number CRD42021276674).

CONTEXT
Elastic bandages are commonly used in sports to treat and prevent sport injuries.
OBJECTIVE
To conduct a systematic review assessing the effectiveness of elastic bandaging in orthopedic- and sports-injury prevention and rehabilitation.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION
The researchers searched the electronic databases MEDLINE, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, EMBASE, and Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) with keywords elastic bandaging in combination, respectively, with first aid, sports injuries, orthopedic injuries, and sports injuries prevention and rehabilitation. Research studies were selected based on the use of the term elastic bandaging in the abstract. Final selection was made by applying inclusion and exclusion criteria to the full text. Studies were included if they were peer-reviewed clinical trials written in English on the effects of elastic bandaging for orthopedic-injury prevention and rehabilitation.
EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS
Twelve studies met the criteria and were included in the final analysis. Data collected included number of participants, condition being treated, treatment used, control group, outcome measures, and results. Studies were critically analyzed using the PEDro scale.
CONCLUSIONS
The studies in this review fell into 2 categories: studies in athletes (n = 2) and nonathletes (n = 10). All included trials had moderate to high quality, scoring ≥5 on the PEDro scale. The PEDro scores for the studies in athletes and nonathletes ranged from 5 to 6 out of 10 and from 5 to 8 out of 10, respectively. The quality of studies was mixed, ranging from higher- to moderate-quality methodological clinical trials. Overall, elastic bandaging can assist proprioceptive function of knee and ankle joint. Because of the moderate methodological quality and insufficient number of clinical trials, further effects of elastic bandaging could not be confirmed.

BACKGROUND
Despite common use of proprioceptive retraining interventions in people with chronic, idiopathic neck pain, evidence that proprioceptive dysfunction exists in this population is lacking. Determining whether proprioceptive dysfunction exists in people with chronic neck pain has clear implications for treatment prescription.
PURPOSE
The aim of this study was to synthesize and critically appraise all evidence evaluating proprioceptive dysfunction in people with chronic, idiopathic neck pain by completing a systematic review and meta-analysis.
DATA SOURCES
MEDLINE, CINAHL, PubMed, Allied and Complementary Medicine, EMBASE, Academic Search Premier, Scopus, Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro), and Cochrane Collaboration databases were searched.
STUDY SELECTION
All published studies that compared neck proprioception (joint position sense) between a chronic, idiopathic neck pain sample and asymptomatic controls were included.
DATA EXTRACTION
Two independent reviewers extracted relevant population and proprioception data and assessed methodological quality using a modified Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) statement.
DATA SYNTHESIS
Thirteen studies were included in the present review. Meta-analysis on 10 studies demonstrated that people with chronic neck pain perform significantly worse on head-to-neutral repositioning tests, with a moderate standardized mean difference of 0.44 (95% confidence interval=0.25, 0.63). Two studies evaluated head repositioning using trunk movement (no active head movement thus hypothesized to remove vestibular input) and showed conflicting results. Three studies evaluated complex or postural repositioning tests; postural repositioning was no different between groups, and complex movement tests were impaired only in participants with chronic neck pain if error was continuously evaluated throughout the movement.
LIMITATIONS
A paucity of studies evaluating complex or postural repositioning tests does not permit any solid conclusions about them.
CONCLUSIONS
People with chronic, idiopathic neck pain are worse than asymptomatic controls at head-to-neutral repositioning tests.

The literature that explains the neurological mechanisms underlying the development or compensation of idiopathic scoliosis is limited. The objective of the article is to describe and integrate the mechanisms and nerve pathways through which idiopathic scoliosis is compensated and/or developed. A narrative systematic review in different databases of the studies published between January 1, 1967 and April 1, 2021 was performed, using the following terms: "scoliosis", "vision", "eye", "vestibule", "labyrinth" "posture", "balance", "eye movements", "cerebellum", "proprioception", and "physiological adaptation". In the search, 1112 references were identified, of which 50 were finally included: 46 observational analytical clinical studies-descriptive (between cohorts, report and series of cases) and 4 experimental studies. In the neurological response to idiopathic scoliosis, the sensory-cortical integration of the afferences in the visual-oculomotor-vestibular-proprioceptive systems, allows modifications at the postural level in order to achieve an initial compensation on the sagittal balance and the centre of body mass; however, over time these compensation mechanisms may be exhausted causing progression of the initial deformity.

BACKGROUND
Extended reality (XR), including virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality, has been increasingly used in postoperative rehabilitation of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the effectiveness of XR-based rehabilitation in TKA compared to conventional rehabilitation.
METHODS
In this study, we searched PubMed (MEDLINE), Embase (OVID), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Web of Science, and clinicaltrials.gov from inception to February 15, 2023 for eligible studies. A total of 14 randomized controlled trials with 989 patients were included in our study. The primary outcomes were pain and function. The secondary outcomes were anxiety and quality of life. A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed.
RESULTS
The pooled data indicated XR-based rehabilitation significantly improved the visual analog scale (standardized mean difference [SMD] = -0.31, 95% Confidence Interval [CI] [-0.47 to -0.15], P = .0001), the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (SMD = -0.46, 95% CI [-0.86 to -0.06], P = .02), range of motion (SMD = 0.40, 95% CI [0.09 to 0.72], P = .01), and anxiety scores (mean difference = -3.95, 95% CI [-7.76 to -0.13], P = .04) than conventional rehabilitation, but Timed Up and Go test and quality of life were similar in the 2 groups.
CONCLUSION
This systematic review and meta-analysis found XR-based rehabilitation improved pain, function, and anxiety, but not quality of life in TKA compared to conventional rehabilitation within 1 month postoperatively. Based on the pooled results, we suggested that XR-based rehabilitation may have benefit in patients' postoperative rehabilitation in TKA.

OBJECTIVE
We aimed to identify key aspects of the learning dynamics of proprioception training including: 1) specificity to the training type, 2) acquisition of proprioceptive skills, 3) retention of learning effects, and 4) transfer to different proprioceptive skills.
METHODS
We performed a systematic literature search using the database (MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and PEDro). The inclusion criteria required adult participants who underwent any training program that could enhance proprioceptive function, and at least 1 quantitative assessment of proprioception before and after the intervention. We analyzed within-group changes to quantify the effectiveness of an intervention.
RESULTS
In total, 106 studies with 343 participant-outcome groups were included. Proprioception-specific training resulted in large effect sizes with a mean improvement of 23.4 to 42.6%, nonspecific training resulted in medium effect sizes with 12.3 to 22% improvement, and no training resulted in small effect sizes with 5.0 to 8.9% improvement. Single-session training exhibited significant proprioceptive improvement immediately (10 studies). For training interventions with a midway evaluation (4 studies), trained groups improved by approximately 70% of their final value at the midway point. Proprioceptive improvements were largely maintained at a delayed follow-up of at least 1 week (12 studies). Finally, improvements in 1 assessment were significantly correlated with improvements in another assessment (10 studies).
CONCLUSIONS
Proprioceptive learning appears to exhibit several features similar to motor learning, including specificity to the training type, 2 time constant learning curves, good retention, and improvements that are correlated between different assessments, suggesting a possible, common mechanism for the transfer of training.

AIM
Our aim was to evaluate the literature investigating proprioception improvement after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) and test the hypothesis that ACL tibial remnant-preserving reconstruction (ACLR-R) is more beneficial than standard technique (ACLR-S) in terms of postoperative proprioceptive function with various reported tests, including joint position sense (JPS) and threshold to detect passive motion (TTDPM).
METHODS
An online search was performed in Embase, MEDLINE/PubMed, Cochrane, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science databases before 5 October 2020, on the basis of the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. Key terms [('ACLR' or 'ACL-R' or 'anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction') AND ('remnant' or 'stump') AND ('proprioception' or 'proprioceptive')] were used. The Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine and The McMaster Critical Review Form for Quantitative Studies were used for quality assessment. In total, four articles comparing proprioceptive functions between ACLR-R and ACLR-S were included, two of which were randomized clinical trials rated as level of evidence II, and two were retrospective cohort studies rated as level of evidence III. The outcomes were then compared. Evaluation of proprioception involved joint position sense (JPS) [reproduction of active positioning (RAP) and reproduction of passive positioning (RPP)] and threshold to detect passive motion (TTDPM) tests.
RESULTS
Only four studies were included, with a total of 234 patients (119 ACLR-R patients and 115 ACLR-S patients). High heterogeneity in characteristics and outcome measurements was observed among the studies. Three studies performed sparing technique, and one performed tensioning technique. One study tested RAP and reported better results at an average of 7 months follow-up in ACLR-R (P < 0.05). Three studies tested RPP, one of which measured RPP within 12 months after surgery and reported better results in ACLR-R than in ACLR-S (P < 0.05). The other two studies reported similar results; however, the findings of one study were statistically insignificant. TTDPM was tested in one study, with no statistically significant difference found.
CONCLUSION
The current literature, although limited, reported proprioception improvement after ACLR-R (compared with ACLR-S) in terms of JPS. However, owing to the heterogeneity of the relevant studies, further research is required to determine remnant preservation effect on knee proprioceptive restoration.

BACKGROUND
Children and adolescents with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) often experience motor skill disturbances, particularly in balance and gait, due to potential vestibular dysfunctions resulting from inner ear damage. Consequently, several studies have proposed the use of virtual reality-based games as a technological resource for therapeutic purposes, aiming to improve the balance and gait of this population.
OBJECTIVE
The objective of this systematic review is to evaluate the quality of evidence derived from randomized or quasi-randomized controlled trials that employed virtual reality-based games to enhance the balance and/or gait of children and adolescents with SNHL.
METHODS
A comprehensive search was conducted across nine databases, encompassing articles published in any language until 1 July 2023. The following inclusion criteria were applied: randomized or quasi-randomized controlled trials involving volunteers from both groups with a clinical diagnosis of bilateral SNHL, aged 6-19 years, devoid of physical, cognitive, or neurological deficits other than vestibular dysfunction, and utilizing virtual reality-based games as an intervention to improve balance and/or gait outcomes.
RESULTS
Initially, a total of 5984 articles were identified through the searches. Following the removal of duplicates and screening of titles and abstracts, eight studies remained for full reading, out of which three trials met the eligibility criteria for this systematic review. The included trials exhibited a very low quality of evidence concerning the balance outcome, and none of the trials evaluated gait. The meta-analysis did not reveal significant differences in balance improvement between the use of traditional balance exercises and virtual reality-based games for adolescents with SNHL (effect size: -0.48; [CI: -1.54 to 0.57]; = 0.37; I = 0%).
CONCLUSION
Virtual reality-based games show promise as a potential technology to be included among the therapeutic options for rehabilitating the balance of children and adolescents with SNHL. However, given the methodological limitations of the trials and the overall low quality of evidence currently available on this topic, caution should be exercised when interpreting the results of the trials analyzed in this systematic review.

BACKGROUND
This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine whether chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) affects the risk of falls and physical function in patients with cancer.
METHODS
A literature search was conducted in the CINAHL, Scopus, and PubMed databases for articles published from January 1950 to April 2022. Seven review authors retrieved studies using predetermined eligibility criteria, extracted the data, and evaluated the quality.
RESULTS
Nine studies were included in the analysis. Patients with CIPN had a significantly higher risk of falls than those without CIPN (risk ratio = 1.38, 95% confidence interval [CI] =1.18-1.62). Patients with CIPN had lower grip strength (standardized mean difference [SMD] =-0.42, 95% CIs = -0.70 to -0.14, = .003), longer chair stand time (SMD = 0.56, 95% CIs = -0.01 to 1.17, = .05), worse timed up and go test time (SMD = 0.79, 95% CIs = 0.41 to 1.17, < .0001), and lower mean Fullerton Advanced Balance scale score (SMD = -0.81, 95% CIs = -1.27 to -0.36, = .005) than patients without CIPN. There were no significant differences in gait speed ( = .38) or Activities-specific Balance Confidence Scale score ( = .09) between patients with and without CIPN.
CONCLUSIONS
This systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrated that patients with CIPN are prone to falls and impaired balance function and muscle strength.
