Because the function and mechanisms of sleep are partially clear, here we applied a meta-analysis to address the issue whether sleep function includes antioxidative properties in mice and rats. Given the expansion of the knowledge in the sleep field, it is indeed ambitious to describe all mammals, or other animals, in which sleep shows an antioxidant function. However, in this paper we reviewed the current understanding from basic studies in two species to drive the hypothesis that sleep is a dynamic-resting state with antioxidative properties. We performed a systematic review of articles cited in Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science until March 2015 using the following search terms: Sleep or sleep deprivation and oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, glutathione, nitric oxide, catalase or superoxide dismutase. We found a total of 266 studies. After inclusion and exclusion criteria, 44 articles were included, which are presented and discussed in this study. The complex relationship between sleep duration and oxidative stress is discussed. Further studies should consider molecular and genetic approaches to determine whether disrupted sleep promotes oxidative stress.

This study adopted systematic literature review and meta-analysis methodology to explored anti-oxidative effect of pu-erh tea. Study authors have systemically searched seven databases up until 21 February 2020. In performing the literature search on the above-mentioned databases, the authors used keywords of pu-erh AND (superoxide dismutase OR glutathione peroxidase OR malondialdehyde). Results derived from meta-analyses showed statistically significant effects of pu-erh tea on reducing serum MDA levels (SMD, −4.19; 95% CI, −5.22 to −3.15; p < 0.001; I2 = 93.67%); increasing serum SOD levels (SMD, 2.41; 95% CI, 1.61 to 3.20; p < 0.001; I2 = 91.36%); and increasing serum GSH-Px levels (SMD, 4.23; 95% CI, 3.10 to 5.36; p < 0.001; I2 = 93.69%). Results from systematic review and meta-analyses validated that various ingredients found in pu-erh tea extracts had anti-oxidation effects, a long-held conventional wisdom with limited supporting evidence.

To determine the pharmaceutical applications, we assessed the evidence from preclinical studies about the hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, and antioxidant potential of Pistacia atlantica (PA) as a natural source for prevention and treatment of diabetes. A comprehensive literature search of the articles published until March 12, 2022 was conducted on PubMed, Embase, Web of Sciences, and Scopus databases, using relevant keywords. This meta-analysis included 12 articles that examined the blood glucose (BG), insulin, homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD). A random-effects model was used to estimate the pooled effect size. Findings indicated that PA supplementation significantly decreased BG, HOMA-IR, TC, TG, and MDA, and increased insulin and SOD in diabetic animals compared with control group (p < .05). However, PA supplementation had no significant effects on HDL-C (p > .05). The subgroup analysis also confirmed the beneficial effect of PA supplementation with longer duration (>4 weeks) and higher doses (≥100 mg/kg/day) as well as in the extract type. The studies have heterogeneity associated with methodological diversity and there were some concerns about the risk of bias, especially about randomization and blind outcome assessment. This meta-analysis provided convincing evidence for antidiabetic, hypolipidemic, and antioxidant activity of PA in animals. Further high-quality studies are needed to firmly establish the clinical efficacy of the plant.

Several heterogeneous pathophysiology pathways have been hypothesized for being involved in the onset and course of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This systematic review aims to summarize the current evidence on the role of inflammation and immunological dysregulations in PTSD, investigating possible peripheral biomarkers linked to the neuroimmune response to stress. A total of 44 studies on the dysregulated inflammatory and metabolic response in subjects with PTSD with respect to controls were included. Eligibility criteria included full-text publications in the English language, human adult samples, studies involving both subjects with a clinical diagnosis of PTSD and a healthy control group. The research was focused on specific blood neuroimmune biomarkers, namely IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6 and INF-γ, as well as on the potential harmful role of reduced antioxidant activity (involving catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase). The possible role of the inflammatory-altered tryptophan metabolism was also explored. The results showed conflicting data on the role of pro-inflammatory cytokines in individuals with PTSD, and a lack of study regarding the other mediators investigated. The present research suggests the need for further studies in human samples to clarify the role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of PTSD, to define potential peripheral biomarkers.

BACKGROUND
Free oxygen radicals have been implicated in the pathogenesis of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is a naturally occurring enzyme which provides a defense against such oxidant injury. Providing supplementary SOD has been tested in clinical trials to prevent BPD in preterm infants.
OBJECTIVES
To determine the efficacy and safety of SOD in the prevention and treatment of BPD on mortality and other complications of prematurity in infants at risk for, or having BPD.
SEARCH METHODS
We searched CENTRAL, PubMed, Embase, and three trials registers on 22 September 2022 together with reference checking, citation searching and contact with study authors to identify additional studies.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Randomized, quasi-randomized and cluster-randomized controlled trials (RCTs) where the participants were preterm infants who had developed, or were at risk of developing BPD, and who were randomly allocated to receive either SOD (in any form, by any route, any dose, anytime) or placebo, or no treatment.
DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
We used standard Cochrane methods. Our primary outcomes were BPD defined as an oxygen requirement at 28 days, BPD defined as oxygen at 36 weeks' postmenstrual age, neonatal mortality, mortality prior to discharge, and BPD or death at 36 weeks' postmenstrual age. We reported risk ratio (RR) and risk difference (RD) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the dichotomous outcomes. We used GRADE to assess certainty of evidence for each outcome.
MAIN RESULTS
We included three RCTs (380 infants) on SOD administration in preterm infants at risk for BPD, and no studies in preterm infants with evolving BPD / early respiratory insufficiency. The evidence is very uncertain about the effect of SOD on BPD defined as an oxygen requirement at 28 days (RR 1.09, 95% CI 0.94 to 1.26; RD 0.06, 95% CI -0.05 to 0.16, 1 study, 302 infants; I for RR and RD not applicable), BPD defined as oxygen at 36 weeks' postmenstrual age (RR 0.96, 95% CI 0.72 to 1.29; RD -0.01, 95% CI -0.11 to 0.09, 2 studies, 335 infants; I for RR and RD = 0%), neonatal mortality (RR 0.98, 95% CI 0.57 to 1.68; RD -0.00, 95% CI -0.08 to 0.07, 2 studies, 335 infants; I for RR and RD = 0%), and mortality prior to discharge (RR 1.20, 95% CI 0.53 to 2.71; RD 0.04, 95% CI -0.14 to 0.23, 2 studies, 78 infants; I for RR and RD = 0%). No studies reported BPD or death at 36 weeks' postmenstrual age. The evidence is very uncertain about the effect of SOD on retinopathy of prematurity any stage (RR 0.95, 95% CI 0.78 to 1.15; RD -0.03, 95% CI -0.15 to 0.08, 2 studies, 335 infants; Ifor RR = 0%, I for RD = 8%), and severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) (RR 0.97, 95% CI 0.57 to 1.65; RD -0.01, 95% CI -0.10 to 0.09, 1 study, 244 infants; I for RR and RD not applicable). No studies reported moderate to severe neurodevelopmental outcome at 18 to 24 months. Certainty of evidence was very low for all outcomes. We identified no ongoing trials.
AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS
The evidence is very uncertain about the effect of SOD on BPD defined as an oxygen requirement at 28 days, BPD defined as oxygen at 36 weeks' postmenstrual age, neonatal mortality and mortality prior to discharge compared to placebo. No studies reported BPD or death at 36 weeks' postmenstrual age and need for supplemental oxygen. The evidence is very uncertain about the effect of SOD on retinopathy of prematurity any stage and severe retinopathy of prematurity. No studies reported moderate to severe neurodevelopmental outcome at 18 to 24 months. The effects of SOD in preterm infants has not been reported in any trial in the last few decades, considering that the most recent trial on SOD in preterm infants was conducted in 1997/1998, and no new studies are ongoing. In the light of the limited available evidence, new data from preclinical and observational studies are needed to justify the conduction of new RCTs. Observational studies might report how SOD is administered, including indication, dose and association with relevant outcomes such as mortality, BPD and long-term neurodevelopment.

Vitamin D deficiency is considered a global public health problem with high prevalence in children and adolescents. The majority of the studies in the literature have identified a relationship between vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency and obesity, as well as other traditional cardiometabolic risk factors in children and adolescents. Scarce studies address vitamin D status with oxidative stress and inflammation in the young population. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the evidence of the association of vitamin D status with oxidative stress and inflammation in children and adolescents. This is a systematic review based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes (PRISMA) guideline on reporting systematic reviews. Eight studies were selected for this review. All included studies evaluated inflammatory biomarkers and two out of eight evaluated biomarkers of oxidative stress. The majority of the studies (five out of eight) found association of vitamin D status with biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation such as C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), cathepsin S, vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), malondialdehyde (MDA), myeloperoxidase, 3-nitrotyrosine, and superoxide dismutase (SOD). Vitamin D status is associated with oxidative stress and inflammation in the majority of the studies with children and adolescents. Thus, the assessment of vitamin D status is important because it is associated with nontraditional cardiometabolic markers in the pediatric population (review registration: PROSPERO CRD42018109307).

Inflammation and oxidative stress are involved in the pathogenesis of a myriad of chronic disorders. This systematic review and meta-analysis was designed to determine the effects of Nigella Sativa (NS) seed and seed oil consumption on several biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress. The Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed-MEDLINE databases were systematically searched until August 2019. The quality assessment and heterogeneity of the selected randomized clinical trials (RCTs) were measured using the Jadad checklist, and Q and I tests, respectively. Finally, a total of 10 clinical RCTs were found to be eligible for this meta-analysis. The pooled findings showed that NS consumption significantly reduced serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP; WMD: -0.67, 95% CI: -1.29, -0.05, I = 95.7%), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α; WMD: -2.29, 95% CI: -4.48, -0.11, I = 93%), and malondialdehyde (MDA; WMD: -1.18, 95% CI: -2.24, -0.12, I = 85.4%), and significantly increased total antioxidant capacity (TAC; WMD: 0.35, 95% CI: 0.10, 0.59, I = 77.1%), and superoxide dismutase (SOD; WMD: 66.30, 95% CI: 1.03, 131.57, I = 99.4%) levels. Overall, the results of this systematic review and meta-analysis imply that NS consumption may decrease inflammatory response and oxidative stress markers. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Overall, the evidence supports the consumption of NS to reduce hs-CRP, TNF-α, and MDA, and to increase SOD and TAC levels. In addition, the subgroup analyses findings concluded that lower dosages of NS, longer durations of the intervention, and the use of NS seed oil may result in more effective action on inflammatory markers, but because of the limited number of trials, the results must be analyzed with caution, especially for the subgroup analysis. However, further prospective studies regarding the effect of NS consumption on biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress, with larger sample sizes, from various countries and longer follow-up periods, are required to confirm whether NS possesses veritable anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

Melatonin is an indoleamine with crucial antioxidant properties that are used to combat inflammatory and neoplastic processes, as well as control transplants. However, the clinical applications of melatonin have not yet been fully consolidated in the literature and require in-depth analysis.
OBJECTIVES
This study reviewed the literature on the antioxidant properties of melatonin in rat models.
METHODS
We followed the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses and used the PubMed, LILACS, and Cochrane databases, Google Scholar, and article references, irrespective of publication time.
RESULTS
Ten articles involving 485 rats were selected, and the effects of melatonin on antioxidant markers were investigated. Melatonin increased superoxide dismutase in nine studies, glutathione peroxidase in seven studies, and catalase in five studies. In contrast, melatonin reduced glutathione in three studies and malonaldehyde in seven of eight studies.
CONCLUSION
Our findings suggest that melatonin effectively reduces oxidative stress.

Fatty liver disease (FLD) is the most common chronic liver disease worldwide. The pathogenesis of this disease is closely related to obesity and insulin resistance. Ginger has hypolipidemic and antioxidant effects and acts as an insulin sensitizer. This study aims to evaluate the effect of ginger supplementation on the fatty liver. A comprehensive search of Medline/PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science/ISI, and Cochrane databases was conducted without time or language restrictions. Eighteen eligible studies were identified, including 17 in-vivo experiments in quantitative analysis and 3 clinical trials in qualitative analysis. The present study provides comprehensive evidence of the efficacy of ginger to improve the liver levels of cholesterol (-5.60 mg/g), triglycerides (TG, -4.28 mg/g), malondialdehyde (-3.16 nmol/mg), catalase (CAT) (3.35 nmol/mg), superoxide dismutase (SOD, 3.01 U/mg), serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT, -2.85 U/L), aspartate aminotransferase (AST, -0.98 U/L), TG (-4.98 mg/dL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL, -3.94 mg/dL), total cholesterol (TC, -3.45 mg/dL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL, 1.27 mg/dL), and fasting blood sugar (FBS, -2.54 mg/dL). Ginger administration may reduce many clinical aspects of FLD by several mechanisms, including insulin-sensitive effects, stimulating the expression of antioxidant enzymes, reducing the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), having antidyslipidemic activities, and reducing hepatic fat content. However, future clinical trials are essential to investigate the clinical application of ginger in this area.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS
Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is characterized by impaired liver function due to chronic alcohol consumption, even fatal in severe cases. We performed a meta-analysis to determine whether microbial agents have therapeutic potential for ALD and elucidate the underlying mechanisms.
METHODS AND RESULTS
Forty-one studies were eligible for this meta-analysis after searching the PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase databases. The combined analysis showed that microbial therapy significantly decreased hepatic enzymatic parameters, including alanine transaminase [standardized mean difference (SMD): -2.70, 95% confidence interval (CI): -3.33 to -2.07], aspartate aminotransferase (SMD: -3.37, 95% CI: -4.25 to -2.49), γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (SMD: -2.07, 95% CI: -3.01 to -1.12), and alkaline phosphatase (SMD: -2.12, 95% CI: -3.32 to -0.92). Microbial agents endotoxin to enter the portal circulation and increasing reduced total cholesterol (SMD = -2.75, 95%CI -4.03 to -1.46) and triglycerides (SMD = -2.64, 95% CI: -3.22 to -2.06). Microbial agents increased amounts of the beneficial flora (SMD: 4.40, 95% CI: 0.97-7.84) and (SMD: 3.84, 95% CI: 0.22-7.45), (SMD: 2.51, 95% CI: 0.29-4.72) and decreased harmful (SMD: -4.18, 95% CI: -6.60 to -1.77), protecting the integrity of the intestinal epithelium and relieving endotoxin (SMD: -2.70, 95% CI: -3.52 to -2.17) into the portal vein, thereby reducing the production of inflammatory factors such as tumor necrosis factor-α (SMD: -3.35, 95% CI: -4.31 to -2.38), interleukin-6 (SMD: -4.28, 95% CI: -6.13 to -2.43), and interleukin-1β (SMD: -4.28, 95% CI: -6.37 to -2.19). Oxidative stress was also relieved, as evidenced by decreased malondialdehyde levels (SMD: -4.70, 95% CI: -6.21 to -3.20). Superoxide dismutase (SMD: 2.65, 95% CI: 2.16-3.15) and glutathione levels (SMD: 3.80, 95% CI: 0.95-6.66) were elevated.
CONCLUSION
Microbial agents can reverse dysbiosis in ALD, thus significantly interfering with lipid metabolism, relieving inflammatory response and inhibiting oxidative stress to improve liver function.
