This systematic review evaluated the effects of foreign tact training on emergent learning outcomes in ten published studies. We also conducted a meta-analysis of aggregate data from seven studies comparing outcomes of foreign tact training with other verbal operant procedures. The preliminary findings indicated foreign tact training produced criterion-level responses in 84 of 106 (79.2%) post-test probes across 37 learners and 55 evaluations of foreign tact training. The meta-analysis results revealed significantly higher within-subjects mean levels of emergent responding following foreign tact training than foreign-to-native intraverbal, native-to-foreign intraverbal, and foreign listener training. Emergent outcomes for adults were not significantly greater than for children. Finally, foreign tact training was slightly more efficient than the other verbal operant procedures, although most of the differences were not statistically significant.

. Cognitive impairments are common in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Systematic reviews reported promising evidence for various cognitive interventions in this population. Computerized cognitive training (CCT) has strong evidence for safety and efficacy in several populations, but its effects in MS have yet to be specified. . We aimed to synthesize the evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the effects of CCT on cognitive, psychosocial, and functional outcomes in adults with MS. . We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and CENTRAL from inception to March 2019. We calculated standardized mean difference (Hedges' ) of change from baseline in untrained measures of cognition, individual domains, psychosocial functioning, and daily function between CCT and control groups using a random-effects model. . A total of 20 RCTs encompassing 982 participants (78% with relapsing-remitting MS) were included. The overall cognitive effect size was moderate ( = 0.30; 95% CI = 0.18-0.43), with no evidence of small-study effect or between-study heterogeneity (prediction interval = 0.17-0.44). Small to moderate effect sizes were found for attention/processing speed, executive functions, and verbal and visuospatial memory. Evidence for working memory, fatigue, and psychosocial and daily functioning were inconclusive. Cognitive effects waned without further training. . CCT is efficacious for overall and key cognitive domains in adults with MS, but efficacy on other outcomes and in progressive subtypes remains unclear. Long-term and well-powered trials with diverse cohorts are needed to optimize and maintain the efficacy of CCT, investigate transfer to daily living, and determine who can benefit and whether CCT is a cost-effective strategy to attenuate cognitive decline in MS.

Cognitive impairments are core features of established schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD). However, it remains unclear whether specific cognitive functions are differentially impaired pre-onset and at what age these impairments can be detected. The purpose of this review was to elucidate these issues through a systematic summary of results from longitudinal studies investigating impairment in specific cognitive domains as antecedents of SSD. Relevant studies were identified by electronic and manual literature searches and included any original study of cognitive domains any time pre-onset of SSDs that included a control group. Effect sizes were calculated by domain for studies comparing high-risk participants who developed SSD with those who did not. The strongest evidence for impairment pre-onset was for mental processing speed, verbal learning and memory, executive function, and social cognition. Some verbal impairments, like language abilities at age 3 and verbal learning and memory at age 7, may develop as static deficits. Conversely, some non-verbal impairments, like mental processing speed, visuospatial abilities, and visual working memory manifest as developmental lag and become significant later in life. Most effect sizes were small to moderate, except for verbal fluency (d' = 0,85), implying this impairment as central in high-risk participants who develop SSD. The present review documents extensive cognitive impairments pre-onset of SSD, and that these impairments start early in life, in line with the neurodevelopmental hypothesis of schizophrenia. Increased knowledge about cognitive impairments preonset can provide a better basis for understanding the complex pathogenesis of SSD as well as informing cognitive remediation programs.

BACKGROUND
Executive functioning (EF) deficits contribute to a significant proportion of the burden of disease associated with bipolar disorder (BD). Yet, there is still debate in the literature regarding the exact profile of executive functioning in BD. The purpose of the present project was to assess whether EF deficits exist among adults suffering BD, and whether these deficits (if apparent) differ by BD subtype.
METHODS
A systematic search identified relevant literature. Randomised controlled trials that used neuropsychological assessment to investigate EF among adults 16-65 years) with a remitted DSM diagnosis of BD (type I or II) were included. Studies were published between 1994 and 2015. A systematic review and meta-analysis were undertaken. For individual studies, standardised mean differences (Cohen's d) and 95% confidence intervals were calculated and represented in forest plots to illustrate differences in executive performance between groups. Summary effects were produced and tests of heterogeneity employed to assess the dispersion and generalisability of results.
RESULTS
Thirty-six studies met criteria for inclusion. Six domains of EF were identified: Set-shifting (SS), inhibition (INH), planning (PLA), verbal fluency (VF), working memory (WM), and attention (ATT). BD1s performed worse than HCs in all domains. BD2s demonstrated impairment in VF, WM, SS, and ATT. The results were mixed for comparisons between BD1s and BD2s, but revealed that BD2s can experience similar (or sometimes greater) EF impairment.
LIMITATIONS
Only a limited number of studies that included BD2 samples were available for inclusion in the current study. Subgroup analysis to elucidate potential moderators of within-study variance was not undertaken.
CONCLUSION
This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis to have compared the EF of remitted BD1s, BD2s, and HCs. The results provided useful insight into the EF profile of patients with BD, and offered commentary as to some of the contradictory results reported in the literature. A standardised methodological protocol for assessment of EF in BD was proposed. The information in this review could enhance our understanding of EF impairment inherent in BD, and the methods and efficacy with which clinicians assess and treat this population.

The serotonergic system is involved in diverse cognitive functions including memory. Of particular importance to daily life are declarative memories that contain information about personal experiences, general facts, and events. Several psychiatric or neurological diseases, such as depression, attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and dementia, show alterations in serotonergic signalling and attendant memory disorders. Nevertheless, understanding serotonergic neurotransmission and its influence on memory remained a challenge until today. In this systematic review, we summarize recent psychopharmacological studies in animals and humans from a psychological memory perspective, in consideration of task-specific requirements. This approach has the advantage that comparisons between serotonin (5-HT)-related neurochemical mechanisms and manipulations are each addressing specific mnemonic circuits. We conclude that applications of the same 5-HT-related treatments can differentially affect unrelated tasks of declarative memories. Moreover, the analysis of specific mnemonic phases (e.g., encoding vs. consolidation) reveals opposing impacts of increased or decreased 5-HT tones, with low 5-HT supporting spatial encoding but impairing the consolidation of objects and verbal memories. Promising targets for protein synthesis-dependent consolidation enhancements include 5-HT receptor agonists and 5-HT receptor antagonists, with the latter being of special interest for the treatment of age-related decline. Further implications are pointed out as base for the development of novel therapeutic targets for memory impairment of neuropsychiatric disorders.

OBJECTIVE
Although there is a consensus that cannabis intoxication will have deleterious effects on a wide spectrum of cognitive skills, there is no consensus regarding the duration of time from last use necessary to ameliorate these effects.
METHOD
A systematic review and series of meta-analyses were undertaken to assess anticipated gains in verbal learning with longer periods of cannabis abstinence. Studies assessing verbal learning performance in abstinent regular cannabis users and nonusing control participants; studies reporting length of cannabis abstinence at the time of neuropsychological assessment; and studies implementing one of three highly comparable measures of verbal learning and memory were included in the analyses. The included tasks have demonstrated some of the most robust declines associated with cannabis use and are prevalent in the clinical practice of neuropsychology. We assessed associations between cannabis abstinence and verbal learning scores via mixed effects subgroup analyses.
RESULTS
Twenty-three studies ( = 28; = 1,711) met all inclusion criteria. Cannabis users abstinent for 7 days or fewer performed worse than controls on verbal learning tasks, whereas cannabis users abstinent for longer periods showed no average significant difference in verbal learning performance compared with controls.
CONCLUSIONS
Based on available evidence, some amelioration of verbal learning limitations presumed to result from cannabis appear to resolve between 7 and 28 days of sustained abstinence. However, in the reviewed studies, years of regular use were inversely related to longer periods of abstinence and verbal learning performance, undermining a confident inference that abstinence alone has direct benefits to verbal learning and memory. BACKGROUND
Cognitive impairment is highly prevalent in multiple sclerosis (MS) with poorly understood underlying mechanisms. Lipids are considered to be associated with MS progression through the inflammatory and oxidative stress pathways, brain atrophy, cellular signaling, and tissue physiology. In addition, serum lipids are proposed as a modifiable factor affecting the neuropsychiatric condition; therefore, this study aims to assess the association between serum lipid levels and cognitive outcomes in MS.
METHODS
This study was carried out following the PRISMA 2020 statement. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase in March 2023, and the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI)'s critical appraisal tools were utilized for risk of bias (RoB) assessments in the included studies. The quantitative synthesis was performed with the comprehensive meta-analysis (CMA3) software.
RESULTS
Out of 508 screened records, 7 studies were eventually found to meet our inclusion criteria. In two studies, the course of MS in the sample of the study was only Relapsing-Remitting MS (RRMS), whereas the other five studies' sample was a combination of different phenotypes. Studies utilized different scales such as Minimal Assessment of Cognitive Function in MS (MACFIMS), Brief International Cognitive Assessment for MS (BICAMS), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Brief Repeatable Battery of Neuropsychological Tests (BRB-N) for cognitive evaluations. Dealing with possible confounders such as age, disease duration and level of disability was the most common possible source of bias in the included studies. One study revealed an inverse relationship between serum levels of apolipoproteins (including ApoA-I, ApoB, and ApoB/ApoA-I) and Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) scores. Also, a correlation between 24S-hydroxycholesterol (24OHC) serum concentrations and SDMT score was reported in one study. The association between serum total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) and different aspects of cognitive function was reported in the studies; however, serum levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) were not found to be associated. The quantitative synthesis revealed a significant correlation between TC and the MoCA scores (r =-0.238; 95 %CI: -0.366 to -0.100; p-value = 0.001); however, the correlation between TG levels and MoCA were not statistically significant (r:-0.070; 95 %CI: -0.209 to 0.072; p-value: 0.334). In addition, the mata-analyses were not associated with significant findings regarding the correlation between lipid profiles (including HDL, LDL, TG, and TC) and other cognitive assessment scales including SDMT, Brief Visuospatial Memory Test (BVMT), and California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) (p-values>0.05).
DISCUSSION
Available evidence suggested a link between TC and LDL with cognitive outcomes of MS patients which was not evident in our quantitative synthesis. The limited number of studies, high RoB, different cognitive assessment scales and reporting methods, and the cross-sectional design of the included studies, were the main limitations that alleviate the clinical significance of the findings of this study and suggested further investigations on this topic.

BACKGROUND
People with fragile X syndrome (FXS) have an intellectual dysfunction that can range from very mild to severe. Symptoms can include speech and language delays and behavioural difficulties such as aggression or self injurious behaviours, emotional lability, and anxiety-related problems (for example obsessive-compulsive symptoms and perseverative behaviours). In some cases, affected people may have an additional diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or an autism spectrum disorder.
OBJECTIVES
To review the efficacy and safety of L-acetylcarnitine in improving the psychological, intellectual, and social performance of people with FXS.
SEARCH METHODS
In May 2015 we searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and two other databases. We also searched three trials registers, four theses databases, and the reference lists of relevant studies and reviews.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that assessed the efficacy of L-acetylcarnitine, at any dose, in people of any age diagnosed with FXS compared with placebo.
DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
For each trial, two review authors independently extracted data on the children included and interventions compared, and assessed the risk of bias of the studies across the following domains: randomisation sequence generation, allocation concealment, blinding (of participants, personnel, and outcome assessors), incomplete outcome data, selective outcome reporting, and other potential sources of bias.
MAIN RESULTS
We found only two RCTs that compared oral L-acetylcarnitine (LAC) with oral placebo in children with FXS. The studies included a total of 83 participants, all of them male, who were treated and followed for one year. The age of participants at the start of treatment ranged from 6 to 13 years, with a mean age of 9 years. Neither study provided information on randomisation, allocation concealment procedures, or blinding of outcome assessment, and we received no responses from the authors we emailed for clarification. We therefore rated studies as being at unclear risk of bias on these domains. We judged both studies to be at low risk of bias for blinding of participants and personnel, incomplete outcome data, and selective reporting, but to be at high risk of other bias, as at least one study was funded by a drug company, and in both studies people working for the company were part of the research team.We used the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach to rate the quality of the available evidence. Overall, the quality of the evidence was low due to the imprecision of results and high risk of other bias.Regarding the primary outcome of psychological and learning capabilities, both studies assessed the effect of interventions on children's verbal and non-verbal intellectual functioning using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - Revised. The authors did not provide detailed data on those results but said that they found no important differences between treatment and placebo.Both studies evaluated the impact of the treatment on hyperactive behaviour using the Conners' Abbreviated Parent-Teacher Questionnaire. In one study, teachers' assessments of the children found no clear evidence of a difference (mean difference (MD) 0.50, 95% confidence interval (CI) -5.08 to 6.08, n = 51; low-quality evidence). The other study stated that there were no differences between treated and untreated participants, but did not provide detailed data for inclusion in the meta-analysis.Parents' assessments favoured LAC in one study (MD -0.57, 95% CI -0.94 to -0.19, n = 17; low-quality evidence), but not in the other (MD -2.80, 95% CI -7.61 to 2.01, n = 51; low-quality evidence), though changes were not large enough to be considered clinically relevant.Regarding social skills, one study reported no clear evidence of a difference in Vineland Adaptive Behavior composite scores (MD 8.20, 95% CI -0.02 to 16.42, n = 51; low-quality evidence), yet results in the socialisation domain favoured LAC (MD 11.30, 95% CI 2.52 to 20.08, n = 51; low-quality evidence).Both studies assessed the safety of the active treatment and recorded no side effects. Neither of the included studies assessed the secondary outcome of caregiver burden.
AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS
Low-quality evidence from two small trials showed that when compared to placebo, LAC may not improve intellectual functioning or hyperactive behaviour in children with FXS.

OBJECTIVES
Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD) have substantial clinical and biological overlap, with cognitive deficits typically observed in the executive and visuospatial domains. However, the neuropsychological profiles of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) associated with these disorders are not well understood.
METHODS
This systematic review examined existing literature on cognition in MCI due to LB disease (MCI-LB) and PD (PD-MCI) using an electronic search of seven databases (Medline, Embase, Psychinfo, PubMed, ProQuest, Scopus, and ScienceDirect). MCI-LB results were reviewed narratively given the small number of resulting papers (n = 7). Outcome variables from PD-MCI studies (n = 13) were extracted for meta-analysis of standardised mean differences (SMD).
RESULTS
In MCI-LB, executive dysfunction and slowed processing speed were the most prominent impairments, while visuospatial and working memory (WM) functions were also poor. MCI-LB scored significantly lower on verbal memory tests relative to controls, but significantly higher than patients with MCI due to Alzheimer's disease. Quantitative analysis of studies in PD-MCI showed a similar profile of impairment, with the largest deficits in visuospatial function (Benton Judgement of Line Orientation, SMD g = -2.09), executive function (Trail Making Test B, SMD g = -1.65), verbal ability (Naming Tests, SMD g = -0.140), and WM (Trail Making Test A, SMD g = -1.20). In both MCI-LB and PD-MCI, verbal and visuospatial memory retrieval was impaired, while encoding and storage appeared relatively intact.
CONCLUSIONS
The findings of this systematic review indicate similar neuropsychological profiles in the MCI stages of DLB and PDD. Executive impairment may at least partially explain poor performance in other domains.

To increase the motivation of students at small group seminar education sessions, teachers and institutions often revert to rewarding the prepared students and/or punishing those who did not prepare. How effective is that? We sought to find theoretical claims or disclaims for this policy from Self-Determination Theory, which is an important contemporary theory about motivation. SDT distinguishes intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and provides evidence for the use of rewards and punishments. The primary aim was to explore the effects of extrinsic rewards and negative incentives on the intrinsic motivation in the literature. A secondary goal was to provide practical tips for teachers to improve the motivation of medical students. Verbal rewards can increase the intrinsic motivation. Unexpected tangible and task-non-contingent tangible rewards appear to have no detrimental effect on the intrinsic motivation. All other expected tangible rewards and negative incentives, like threats and deadlines, have been found to undermine the intrinsic motivation. Autonomous self-regulated learning (intrinsic motivation, identified regulation and/or integrated regulation) is associated with high quality learning and well-being. Autonomous self-regulated learning is therefore the desired drive for learning and can be supported by a teacher via satisfying the needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness. Extrinsic rewards and negative incentives should be avoided as they both undermine the intrinsic motivation. Autonomous self-regulated learning leads to more effective learning. Several practical tips that support one of the three basic psychological needs are discussed. Most are relatively easy to apply and stimulate autonomous self-regulated learning.
