Recent advances in artificial intelligence have provided ophthalmologists with fast, accurate, and automated means for diagnosing and treating ocular conditions, paving the way to a modern and scalable eye care system. Compared to other ophthalmic disciplines, neuro-ophthalmology has, until recently, not benefitted from significant advances in the area of artificial intelligence. In this narrative review, we summarize and discuss recent advancements utilizing artificial intelligence for the detection of structural and functional optic nerve head abnormalities, and ocular movement disorders in neuro-ophthalmology.

Social media is being widely used across ophthalmology. Its communication tools have been employed more often by ophthalmologists in private practice than academia, although academic institutions may be more impactful influencers. There are opportunities to promote ophthalmic services and to augment traditional clinical care. Social media provides a medium to disseminate peer-reviewed literature in ophthalmology, and to expand conference experiences. It is used for teaching ophthalmology at medical schools and attracting medical students into ophthalmology training, and for research in ophthalmology. Important considerations when using social media include the required time commitment and the public nature of interactions. The high level of misinformation in medical social media remains a challenge for both ophthalmologists and their patients, and the ophthalmologist can play an active role in addressing the issue. This review considers the role that social media is playing in ophthalmology today, including impact on ophthalmic practice, applications in ophthalmic education and training, and patient-focused networking.

It is indisputable that human activities have caused climate change and that, if left unchecked, these activities will lead to worsening of weather extremes including fire, drought, and flood with all their attendant human suffering. Reducing future climate change requires limiting cumulative emissions of CO and other greenhouse gases including methane. We have written this evidence-based perspective to highlight interventions with the largest effect to help the average ophthalmologist make the changes with the highest impact in their day-to-day lives.

This article will review the best approaches to neuroimaging for specific ophthalmologic conditions and discuss characteristic radiographic findings. A review of the current literature was performed to find recommendations for the best approaches and characteristic radiographic findings for various ophthalmologic conditions. Options for imaging continue to grow with modern advances in technology, and ophthalmologists should stay current on the various radiographic techniques available to them, focusing on their strengths and weaknesses for different clinical scenarios.

The Nobel Prize is the world's foremost honor for scientific advances in medicine and other areas. Founded by Alfred Nobel, the prizes have been awarded annually since 1901. We reviewed the literature on persons who have won or competed for this prize in subjects related to vision and ophthalmology. The topics were divided into vision physiology, diagnostic and therapeutic methods, disease mechanism, and miscellaneous categories. Allvar Gullstrand is the only ophthalmologist to win a Nobel Prize; he is also the only one to receive it for work in ophthalmology. Other ophthalmologists that have been nominated were Hjalmar Schiötz (tonometer), Karl Koller (topical anesthesia), and Jules Gonin (retinal detachment). Other scientists have won the prize for eye-related research: Ragnar Granit, Haldan Hartline and George Wald (chemistry and physiology of vision), and David Hubel and Torsten Wiesel (processing in the visual system). Peter Medawar is the only person born in Brazil to have won the Nobel Prize.
