The Party's 14th Five-Year-Plan and the 2035 Visionary Goals point out that green and sustainable development is the direction of China's road in the present age, and provide a theoretical basis for further improvement of ecological civilization. "Sponge city" is a new type of urban construction idea in China; moving from pilot to vigorous implementation at present, it is an important element of China's promotion of green development and development of ecological civilization. At present, a number of sponge city pilot projects have been built in China, and evaluation of their effects is already a matter of urgency. The overall planning of China's current policies in sponge city construction and the specific analyses conducted by experts from both subjective and objective aspects have not been able to completely fill the gap in this regard, thus making it particularly urgent to conduct in-depth studies. Based on this, this paper discusses the performance assessment of sponge cities in China on the basis of the prediction and analysis of the development trend of sponge cities in China. In the performance assessment system, the correctness and timeliness of the index system should be considered in terms of practical effects; in the city performance assessment, the ideas of new city development such as low-carbon cities and smart cities should be combined to build a comprehensive and multi-perspective intelligent assessment system, so as to provide a strong boost to promote the development of city construction and its evaluative research. Firstly, a system-dynamic model is applied to sort out and combine its internal operation mechanism, and a set of evaluation systems based on the ecological philosophical perspective of the sponge city and urban sustainable development performance is established. Second, to improve the accuracy of the research results, parallelism tests and robustness analysis were conducted on this performance index evaluation system. The study's results show that sponge city construction has achieved good results in sustainable urban development and has contributed to future development.

Parallel evolution provides powerful natural experiments for studying repeatability of evolution and genomic basis of adaptation. Well-documented examples from plants are, however, still rare, as are inquiries of mechanisms driving convergence in some traits while divergence in others. , a predominantly foothill species with scattered morphologically distinct alpine occurrences is a promising candidate. Yet, the hypothesis of parallelism remained untested. We sampled foothill and alpine populations in all regions known to harbor the alpine ecotype and used SNP genotyping to test for repeated alpine colonization. Then, we combined field surveys and a common garden experiment to quantify phenotypic parallelism. Genetic clustering by region but not elevation and coalescent simulations demonstrated parallel origin of alpine ecotype in four mountain regions. Alpine populations exhibited parallelism in height and floral traits which persisted after two generations in cultivation. In contrast, leaf traits were distinctive only in certain region(s), reflecting a mixture of plasticity and genetically determined non-parallelism. We demonstrate varying degrees and causes of parallelism and non-parallelism across populations and traits within a plant species. Parallel divergence along a sharp elevation gradient makes a promising candidate for studying genomic basis of adaptation.

People can perceive 3D information from contour drawings and some types of configurations of contours in such drawings are important for 3D perception. We know that our visual system is sensitive to these configurations. Koshmanova & Sawada (2019, Vision Research, 154, 97-104) showed that the sensitivity is higher to a parallel configuration of contours than to a perpendicular configuration of contours. In this study, two psychophysical experiments were conducted that compared the sensitivity to a parallel configuration to two different configurations. In Experiment 1, orientation thresholds were measured with parallel and converging configurations composed of three contours. In Experiment 2, orientation thresholds of configurations composed of two contours were measured with parallel, collinear, and perpendicular configurations. The results of Experiment 1 showed that the visual system is more sensitive to parallel configurations than to converging configurations. The results of Experiment 2 showed that the sensitivity to the parallel configuration is analogous to the sensitivity to the collinear configuration, and it is higher than the sensitivity to the perpendicular configuration. The role that the parallel configuration plays in the 3D perception of contour-drawings is discussed.

Review
Habits have garnered significant interest in studies of associative learning and maladaptive behavior. However, habit research has faced scrutiny and challenges related to the definitions and methods. Differences in the conceptualizations of habits between animal and human studies create difficulties for translational research. Here, we review the definitions and commonly used methods for studying habits in animals and humans and discuss potential alternative ways to assess habits, such as automaticity. To better understand habits, we then focus on the behavioral factors that have been shown to make or break habits in animals, as well as potential mechanisms underlying the influence of these factors. We discuss the evidence that habitual and goal-directed systems learn in parallel and that they seem to interact in competitive and cooperative manners. Finally, we draw parallels between habitual responding and compulsive drug seeking in animals to delineate the similarities and differences in these behaviors.

Review
Parallelism between evolutionary trajectories in a trait space is often seen as evidence for repeatability of phenotypic evolution, and angles between trajectories play a pivotal role in the analysis of parallelism. However, properties of angles in multidimensional spaces have not been widely appreciated by biologists. To remedy this situation, this study provides a brief overview on geometric and statistical aspects of angles in multidimensional spaces. Under the null hypothesis that trajectory vectors have no preferred directions (i.e. uniform distribution on hypersphere), the angle between two independent vectors is concentrated around the right angle, with a more pronounced peak in a higher-dimensional space. This probability distribution is closely related to - and beta distributions, which can be used for testing the null hypothesis concerning a pair of trajectories. A recently proposed method with eigenanalysis of a vector correlation matrix can be connected to the test of no correlation or concentration of multiple vectors, for which simple test procedures are available in the statistical literature. Concentration of vectors can also be examined by tools of directional statistics such as the Rayleigh test. These frameworks provide biologists with baselines to make statistically justified inferences for (non)parallel evolution.

The parallel study of music in science and creative practice can be traced back to the ancients; and paralleling the emergence of music neuroscience, creative musical practitioners have employed neurobiological phenomena extensively in music composition and performance. Several examples from the author's work in this area, which began in the 1960s, are cited and briefly described. From this perspective, the author also explores questions pertinent to current agendas evident in music neuroscience and speculates on potentially potent future directions.

Review
With their 'all-or-none' action potential responses, single neurons (or units) are accepted as the basic computational unit of the brain. There is extensive animal literature to support the mechanistic importance of studying neuronal firing as a way to understand neuronal microcircuits and brain function. Although most studies have emphasized physiology, there is increasing recognition that studying single units provides novel insight into system-level mechanisms of disease. Microelectrode recordings are becoming more common in humans, paralleling the increasing use of intracranial electroencephalography recordings in the context of presurgical evaluation in focal epilepsy. In addition to single-unit data, microelectrode recordings also record local field potentials and high-frequency oscillations, some of which may be different to that recorded by clinical macroelectrodes. However, microelectrodes are being used almost exclusively in research contexts and there are currently no indications for incorporating microelectrode recordings into routine clinical care. In this review, we summarize the lessons learnt from 65 years of microelectrode recordings in human epilepsy patients. We cover the electrode constructs that can be utilized, principles of how to record and process microelectrode data and insights into ictal dynamics, interictal dynamics and cognition. We end with a critique on the possibilities of incorporating single-unit recordings into clinical care, with a focus on potential clinical indications, each with their specific evidence base and challenges.

We present a novel distributed union-find algorithm that features asynchronous parallelism and k-d tree based load balancing for scalable visualization and analysis of scientific data. Applications of union-find include level set extraction and critical point tracking, but distributed union-find can suffer from high synchronization costs and imbalanced workloads across parallel processes. In this study, we prove that global synchronizations in existing distributed union-find can be eliminated without changing final results, allowing overlapped communications and computations for scalable processing. We also use a k-d tree decomposition to redistribute inputs, in order to improve workload balancing. We benchmark the scalability of our algorithm with up to 1,024 processes using both synthetic and application data. We demonstrate the use of our algorithm in critical point tracking and super-level set extraction with high-speed imaging experiments and fusion plasma simulations, respectively.

Image recognition technology belongs to an important research field of artificial intelligence. In order to enhance the application value of image recognition technology in the field of computer vision and improve the technical dilemma of image recognition, the research improves the feature reuse method of dense convolutional network. Based on gradient quantization, traditional parallel algorithms have been improved. This improvement allows for independent parameter updates layer by layer, reducing communication time and data volume. The introduction of quantization error reduces the impact of gradient loss on model convergence. The test results show that the improvement strategy designed by the research improves the model parameter efficiency while ensuring the recognition effect. Narrowing the learning rate is conducive to refining the updating granularity of model parameters, and deepening the number of network layers can effectively improve the final recognition accuracy and convergence effect of the model. It is better than the existing state-of-the-art image recognition models, visual geometry group and EfficientNet. The parallel acceleration algorithm, which is improved by the gradient quantization, performs better than the traditional synchronous data parallel algorithm, and the improvement of the acceleration ratio is obvious. Compared with the traditional synchronous data parallel algorithm and stale synchronous parallel algorithm, the optimized parallel acceleration algorithm of the study ensures the image data training speed and solves the bottleneck problem of communication data. The model designed by the research improves the accuracy and training speed of image recognition technology and expands the use of image recognition technology in the field of computer vision. Please confirm the affiliation details of [1] is correct. The relevant detailed information in reference [1] has been confirmed to be correct.

Mutations in DNA have large-ranging consequences, from evolution to disease. Many mechanisms contribute to mutational processes such as dysfunctions in DNA repair pathways and exogenous or endogenous mutagen exposures. Model organisms and mutation accumulation (MA) experiments are indispensable to study mutagenesis. Classical MA is, however, time consuming and laborious. To fill the need for more efficient approaches to characterize mutational profiles, we have developed an innovative microfluidic-based system that automatizes MA culturing over many generations in budding yeast. This unique experimental tool, coupled with high-throughput sequencing, reduces by one order of magnitude the time required for genome-wide measurements of mutational profiles, while also parallelizing and simplifying the cell culture. To validate our approach, we performed microfluidic MA experiments on two different genetic backgrounds, a wild-type strain and a base-excision DNA repair ung1 mutant characterized by a well-defined mutational profile. We show that the microfluidic device allows for mutation accumulation comparable to the traditional method on plate. Our approach thus paves the way to massively-parallel MA experiments with minimal human intervention that can be used to investigate mutational processes at the origin of human diseases and to identify mutagenic compounds relevant for medical and environmental research.
