In defensive mimicry, resemblance between unequally defended species can be parasitic; this phenomenon has been termed quasi-Batesian mimicry. Few studies have used real co-mimics and their predators to test whether the mimetic interactions were parasitic. Here, we investigated the mimetic interaction between two well-defended insect species, the bombardier beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) and the assassin bug (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), using their potential predator, the pond frog (Anura: Ranidae), which coexists with these insect species in the same habitat in Japan. We observed behavioural responses of this frog species (adults and juveniles) to adult . and adult . under laboratory conditions. Among the frogs, 100% and 75% rejected . and . , respectively, suggesting that, compared with the assassin bug . , the bombardier beetle . is more well-defended against frogs. An assassin bug or a bombardier beetle was provided to a frog that had encountered the other insect species. Frogs with a history of assassin bug encounter demonstrated a lower rate of attack toward bombardier beetles. Similarly, frogs with a history of bombardier beetle encounter demonstrated a lower rate of attack toward assassin bugs. Therefore, both the bombardier beetle . and the assassin bug . benefit from the mimetic interaction.

Genetic and morphological structure of vector populations are useful to identify panmictic groups, reinfestation sources and minimal units for control interventions. Currently, no studies have integrated genetic and morphometric data in Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), one of the main vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi. We characterized the genetic and phenotypic structure of T. infestans at a small spatial scale (2-8 km), identified potential migrants and compared flight-related traits among genetic groups and between migrant and non-migrant insects in a well-defined area without insecticide spraying in the previous 12 years. We obtained microsatellite genotypes (N = 303), wing shape and size (N = 164) and body weight-to-length ratios (N = 188) in T. infestans from 11 houses in Pampa del Indio, Argentine Chaco. The uppermost level of genetic structuring partially agreed with the morphological groups, showing high degrees of substructuring. The genetic structure showed a clear spatial pattern around Route 3 and one genetic group overlapped with an area of persistent infestation and insecticide resistance. Females harboured more microsatellite alleles than males, which showed signs of isolation-by-distance. Wing shape discriminant analyses of genetic groups revealed low reclassification scores whereas wing size differed among genetic groups for both sexes. Potential migrants (8%) did not differ from non-migrants in sex, ecotope, wing shape and size. However, male migrants had lower W/L than non-migrants suggesting poorer nutritional state. Our findings may contribute to the understanding of population characteristics, dispersal dynamics and ongoing elimination efforts of T. infestans.

Chitin is an essential component of the peritrophic matrix (PM), which is a structure that lines the insect's gut and protects against mechanical damage and pathogens. Rhodnius prolixus (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) does not have a PM, but it has an analogous structure, the perimicrovillar membrane (PMM); chitin has not been described in this structure. Here, we show that chitin is present in the R. prolixus midgut using several techniques. The FTIR spectrum of the KOH-resistant putative chitin-material extracted from the midgut bolus showed peaks characteristic of the chitin molecule at 3500, 1675 and 1085 cm(1). Both the midgut bolus material and the standard chitin NMR spectra showed a peak at 1.88 ppm, which is certainly due to methyl protons in the acetamide a group. The percentages of radioactive N-acetylglucosamine (CPM) incorporated were 2 and 4% for the entire intestine and bolus, respectively. The KOH-resistant putative chitin-material was also extracted and purified from the N-acetylglucosamine radioactive bolus, and the radioactivity was estimated through liquid scintillation. The intestinal CHS cDNA translated sequence was the same as previously described for the R. prolixus cuticle and ovaries. Phenotypic alterations were observed in the midgut of females with a silenced CHS gene after a blood meal, such as retarded blood meal digestion; the presence of fresh blood that remained red nine days after the blood meal; and reduced trachea and hemozoin content compared with the control. Wheat germ agglutinin (a specific probe that detects chitin) labeling proximal to the intestine (crop and midgut) was much lower in females with a silenced CHS gene, especially in the midgut region, where almost no fluorescence signal was detected compared with the control groups. Midguts from females with a CHS gene silenced by dsRNA-CHS and control midguts pre-treated with chitinase showed that the chitin-derived fluorescence signal decreased in the region around the epithelium, the region facing the midgut and projections towards the intestinal lumen when evaluated microscopically. The relative reduction in CHS transcripts by approximately 80% using an RNAi assay supports the phenotypical alterations in the midgut observed using fluorescence microscopy assays. These data show that chitin is present in the R. prolixus midgut epithelium and in its surface projections facing the lumen. The CHS gene expression and the presence of chitin in the R. prolixus midgut may suggest a target for controlling Chagas disease vectors and addressing this public health problem.

Heteropteran insects such as assassin bugs (Reduviidae) and giant water bugs (Belostomatidae) descended from a common predaceous and venomous ancestor, and the majority of extant heteropterans retain this trophic strategy. Some heteropterans have transitioned to feeding on vertebrate blood (such as the kissing bugs, Triatominae; and bed bugs, Cimicidae) while others have reverted to feeding on plants (most Pentatomomorpha). However, with the exception of saliva used by kissing bugs to facilitate blood-feeding, little is known about heteropteran venoms compared to the venoms of spiders, scorpions and snakes. One obstacle to the characterization of heteropteran venom toxins is the structure and function of the venom/labial glands, which are both morphologically complex and perform multiple biological roles (defense, prey capture, and extra-oral digestion). In this article, we describe three methods we have successfully used to collect heteropteran venoms. First, we present electrostimulation as a convenient way to collect venom that is often lethal when injected into prey animals, and which obviates contamination by glandular tissue. Second, we show that gentle harassment of animals is sufficient to produce venom extrusion from the proboscis and/or venom spitting in some groups of heteropterans. Third, we describe methods to harvest venom toxins by dissection of anaesthetized animals to obtain the venom glands. This method is complementary to other methods, as it may allow harvesting of toxins from taxa in which electrostimulation and harassment are ineffective. These protocols will enable researchers to harvest toxins from heteropteran insects for structure-function characterization and possible applications in medicine and agriculture.

Triatoma rubrovaria subcomplex consists of T. carcavalloi, T. circummaculata, T. klugi, T. limai, T. oliveirai, T. pintodiasi, T. rubrovaria, T. patagonica and T. guasayana, which can be vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiologic agent of Chagas disease. In this study, morphological, morphometric, and genetic characters of T. circummaculata, T. pintodiasi, T. carcavalloi, T. klugi, and T. rubrovaria were analyzed in view of the integrative taxonomy and phylogeny of the T. rubrovaria subcomplex. Molecular studies were carried out through the sequencing and analysis of the mitochondrial genes COI and CytB, nuclear genes ITS I, ITS 2, 16S, and 28S from rDNA and rescued a monophyletic group. Furthermore, differential morphological characters were found among the five species in the pronotum, scutellum, stridulatory sulcus, male genitalia, and external female genitalia. Finally, morphometric analyses made it possible to differentiate the five species. Phylogenetic analyzes rescued the relationship of T. pintodiasi with members of the T. rubrovaria subcomplex and demonstrated that this subcomplex is a monophyletic group composed of the species T. carcavalloi, T. circummaculata, T. klugi, T. guasayana, T. limai, T. oliveirai, T. patagonica, T. pintodiasi, and T. rubrovaria. Furthermore, through integrative taxonomy, it was possible to confirm the specific status of the species T. carcavalloi, T. circummaculata, T. pintodiasi, T. klugi, and T. rubrovaria, offering new useful morphological characters for the differentiation and characterization of these potential vectors and distributed in Southern Brazil.

Tool-use in animals is a complex and rare phenomenon, particularly in insects. Tool-use in assassin bugs has been suggested as several species apply adhesive plant resins to their body, which has been hypothesized to function in enhancing prey capture. Here, we staged predatory interactions of resin-deprived and resin-equipped assassin bugs ( sp.) and discovered that applying resin as a tool conveys a clear predatory advantage to the assassin bugs. sp. can thus be considered a tool-user, and since this behaviour was present in all individuals, including newly hatched nymphs, tool-use can be considered to be stereotyped. Our study, along with others, suggests that, when compared with other insects, tool-use is disproportionately common within the assassin bugs.

The present study aimed to identify the triatomine species and evaluate Trypanosoma cruzi infection in insects captured in endemic areas of Pará State, Brazil. Triatomines were captured in nine rural communities in the municipality of São Domingos do Capim in August, September and December 2014 using active searches and Malaise and Noireau traps. Additionally, from 2014 to 2018, residents and community health agents submitted captured triatomines to the study team. The analysis of T. cruzi infection in the insects was performed by direct parasitological examination and nested-PCR. A total of 225 triatomines were captured and identified: Rhodnius robustus (n = 111), Rhodnius pictipes (n = 54), Panstrongylus geniculatus (n = 44), Eratyrus mucronatus (n = 11), Panstrongylus lignarius (n = 4), and Panstrongylus rufotuberculatus (n = 1). Direct parasitological examination was performed in 27 living triatomines R. robustus (n = 14), P. geniculatus (n = 7) and R. pictipes (n = 6) and metacyclic trypomastigote forms similar to those of T. cruzi were observed in 66.6% (18/27) samples. Of 174 samples analysed by nested-PCR, 81.6% were positive for T. cruzi DNA: R. robustus (84.7%; 72/85), R. pictipes (84.1%; 37/44), P. geniculatus (69.4%; 25/36), P. lignarius (100%; 4/4), E. mucronatus (75%; 3/4) and P. rufotuberculatus (100%; 1/1). R. robustus, R. pictipes and P. geniculatus were the main vectors of T. cruzi in the studied areas; however, the detection of infections in P. lignarius, E. mucronatus and P. rufotuberculatus indicated that these species can also act as potential vectors of T. cruzi in the study areas.

Autogeny, the ability to develop eggs without a meal in the adult stage, has been described in several groups of arthropods, especially hematophagous Diptera Nematocera. In obligate hematophagous hemimetabolous insects that feed on blood in all their instars, such as Triatominae, this concept gives rise to species with apparently facultative autogeny, such as Triatoma infestans. Generalized linear models were applied to explain egg production by the predictor variables molting weight as a proxy of nymphal accumulated reserves and digested blood weight as an indicator of adult reserve in fasted, incompletely fed and engorged at repletion females. The relationship between these indicators of nutritional status and egg development turned out to be a continuous function in which, with molting weights greater than 254 mg, the insects are autogenic, but for the first batch of eggs with molting weights between 132 and 253 mg, they require one adult meal of at least 202 mg, and with molting weights less than 131 mg at least two meals are required. Both molting weight and blood intake could determine oocyte production in an additive manner, thus the concept of autogeny as a switch on-off phenomenon is not directly applicable to Triatominae. Nevertheless, autogenic ability would allow Triatominae with relatively long cycles to accelerate population growth under favorable or low competition conditions during colonization or recovery after a control intervention.

Flight dispersal of Triatominae is affected by climatic conditions and determines the spatiotemporal patterns of house invasion and transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi Chagas (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae). We investigated the detailed time structure and temperature dependencies of flight occurrence of Triatoma infestans Klug (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) and other triatomine species in a rural village of western Argentina by taking advantage of the attraction of adult triatomines to artificial light sources. Most of the village's streetlight posts were systematically inspected for triatomines twice between sunset and midnight over 425 nights in the spring-summer seasons of 1999-2002, an unprecedented light-trap sampling effort for any triatomine species. In total, 288 adults were captured, including 122 Triatoma guasayana Wygodzinsky and Abalos, 89 T. infestans, 72 Triatoma eratyrusiformis Del Ponte, and 5 Triatoma garciabesi Carcavallo et al. Adult sex ratios were balanced in T. infestans and strongly male-biased in other species. Nearly all flight-dispersing triatomines were caught when temperatures at sunset were >20 °C (range, 16.6-31.7 °C), suggesting a putative threshold around 17-18 °C. Triatomine catches were rare on rainy days. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the proportion of nights in which at least an adult T. infestans was caught increased highly significantly with increasing temperature at sunset and was modified by collection month, with greater catches in early spring and no sex differential. This study confirms that spring represents a previously overlooked, important dispersal period of T. infestans, and shows large variations among and within Triatominae in their temporal patterns of flight occurrence, abundance, and sex ratio.

INTRODUCTION
Chagas disease is a health problem that affects approximately 7 million people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Vector transmission is one of the most important routes in South and Central American countries. Between 2013 and 2019, municipalities of Sergipe sent 507 triatomines for analysis, unveiling the largest records found in the south in the villages of Poço da Clara, Alagoinhas and Pilões, and the municipality of Tobias Barreto. The high prevalence of infected vectors in these localities motivated this epidemiological study.
METHODS
After educational lectures on the vectors and risks of the disease, a structured questionnaire was administered to identify areas and risk factors for transmission of the parasite. The data guided the collection of vectors and blood samples from domestic reservoirs.
RESULTS
The studied region is considered endemic for triatomines infected by Trypanosoma cruzi with three species of vectors; the highest prevalence was Panstrongylus lutzi (54.83%), followed by Triatoma pseudomaculata (43.54%), and Triatoma tibiamaculata (1.61%). In the villages in this study, 100% of the vectors were found intradomically. The coexistence of residents with domestic animals was reported by 62.04% (255) of those surveyed. Forty-one small animals that were actively living with humans at home in the localities were evaluated serologically. No infection was observed in the domestic animals.
CONCLUSIONS
There are favorable conditions for the domiciliation of triatomines in the evaluated locations, contributing to the risk of vectorial transmission of Chagas disease.
