The fallopian tubes (FT) play a key role in fertility by facilitating the movement of gametes to promote fertilisation and, subsequently, passage of the zygote for implantation. Histologically, the FT mucosa consists of three main cell types: secretory, ciliated and peg cells. In addition, several studies have reported the presence of immune cells. This systematic review aims to present a comprehensive analysis of the immune cell populations in the human FT, both in health and benign pathology, to promote a better understanding of tubal pathologies and their influence on infertility. A comprehensive literature search was conducted across five databases and augmented with manual citation chaining. Forty-two eligible studies were selected in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Following screening, risk of bias assessments were conducted, data extracted and the findings presented thematically. T lymphocytes, predominantly CD8 T cells, represent the most abundant immune cell population within the healthy FT, with B lymphocytes, macrophages, NK cells and dendritic cells also localised to the tubal mucosa. There is evidence to suggest that lymphocyte and macrophage populations are susceptible to changes in the concentration of reproductive hormones. Tubal ectopic pregnancy, salpingitis, hydrosalpinx and endometriosis are all characterised by an increased population of macrophages in comparison to healthy FT. However, given the inconsistent evidence presented between studies, and the lack of studies examining all immune cell subtypes in tubal pathologies, only limited conclusions can be formulated on pathology-specific immune cell populations, and further research is required for validation.

BACKGROUND
Dendritic cell vaccination (DCV) strategies, thanks to a complex immune response, may flare tumor regression and improve patients' long-term survival. This meta-analysis aims to assess the efficacy of DCV for newly diagnosed glioblastoma patients in clinical trials.
METHODS
The study databases, including PubMed, Web of Knowledge, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Cochrane, were searched by two blinded investigators considering eligible studies based on the following keywords: "glioblastoma multiforme", "dendritic cell", "vaccination", "immunotherapy", "immune system", "immune response", "chemotherapy", "recurrence", and "temozolomide". Among the 157 screened, only 15 articles were eligible for the final analysis.
RESULTS
Regimens including DCV showed no effect on 6-month progression-free survival (PFS, HR = 1.385, 95% CI: 0.822-2.335, = 0.673) or on 6-month overall survival (OS, HR = 1.408, 95% CI: 0.882-2.248, = 0.754). In contrast, DCV led to significantly longer 1-year OS (HR = 1.936, 95% CI: 1.396-2.85, = 0.001) and longer 2-year OS (HR = 3.670, 95% CI: 2.291-5.879, = 0.001) versus control groups. Hence, introducing DCV could lead to increased 1 and 2-year survival of patients by 1.9 and 3.6 times, respectively.
CONCLUSION
Antitumor regimens including DCV can effectively improve mid-term survival in patients suffering glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), but its impact emerges only after one year from vaccination. These data indicate the need for more time to achieve an anti-GBM immune response and suggest additional therapeutics, such as checkpoint inhibitors, to empower an earlier DCV action in patients affected by a very poor prognosis.

BACKGROUND
The number of clinical studies evaluating the benefit of cytokine-induced killer cell (CIK) therapy, an adoptive immunotherapy, for colorectal cancer (CRC) is increasing. In many of these trials, CIK therapy was coadministered with conventional cancer therapy. The aim of this review is to systematically assess the available literature, in which the majority were only in Chinese, on CIK therapy for the management of CRC using meta-analysis and to identify parameters associated with successful CIK therapy implementation.
METHODS
Prospective and retrospective clinical studies which compared CIK therapy to non-CIK therapy in patients with CRC were searched for electronically on MEDLINE, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang Data databases. The clinical endpoints of overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), OS and PFS rates, overall response rate (ORR), and toxicity were meta-analyzed using HR and relative ratio (RR), and subgroup analyses were performed using chi-square (χ) test and I-squared (I) statistics for study design, disease stage, cotherapy type, and timing of administration.
RESULTS
In total, 70 studies involving 6743 patients were analyzed. CIK therapy was favored over non-CIK therapy for OS (HR=0.59, 95% CI: 0.53 to 0.65), PFS (HR=0.55, 95% CI: 0.47 to 0.63), and ORR (RR=0.65, 95% CI: 0.57 to 0.74) without increasing toxicity (HR=0.59, 95% CI: 0.16 to 2.25). Subgroup analyses on OS and PFS by study design (randomized vs non-randomized study design), disease stage (Stage I-III vs Stage IV), cotreatment with dendritic cells (DCs) (CIK vs DC-CIK therapy), or timing of therapy administration (concurrent vs sequential with coadministered anticancer therapy) also showed that the clinical benefit of CIK therapy was robust in any subgroup analysis. Furthermore, cotreatment with DCs did not improve clinical outcomes over CIK therapy alone.
CONCLUSION
Compared with standard therapy, patients who received additional CIK cell therapy had favorable outcomes without increased toxicity, warranting further investigation into CIK therapy for the treatment of CRC.

BACKGROUND
This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of cytokine-induced killer (CIK)/dendritic cell combined with CIK (DC-CIK) cell therapy in advanced gastrointestinal cancer (GIC).
METHODS
The PubMed, Cochrane library, and Embase were searched to conduct a meta-analysis of clinical controlled trials to evaluate the efficacy and safety of CIK/DC-CIK cell therapy in advanced GIC. The pooled risk ratios (RRs) or weighted mean difference (WMD) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated.
RESULTS
A total of nine studies with 1113 patients were identified. The overall survival (RR = 1.84, 95% CI = 1.41-2.40, P = 0.654, I = 0%), progression-free survival (RR = 1.99, 95% CI = 1.52-2.60, P = 0.727, I = 0%), and quality of life (WMD = 16.09, 95% CI = 1.66-30.52, P < 0.001, I = 98.8%) were significantly improved in patients who received chemotherapy combined with CIK/DC-CIK cells, and no severe adverse events were reported.
CONCLUSION
This meta-analysis suggested that the combination of CIK/DC-CIK immunotherapy and chemotherapy was safe and applicable for patients with advanced GIC. It is a feasible choice to prolong survival and improve quality of life.

Sepsis is a series of life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by an impaired host response to infection. A large number of molecular studies of sepsis have revealed complex interactions between infectious agents and hosts that result in heterogeneous manifestations of sepsis. Sepsis can cause immunosuppression and increase the expression of checkpoint inhibitor molecules, including programmed death protein (PD-1) and programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1), and thus PD-1 and PD-L1 are thought to be useful as diagnostic and prognostic tools for sepsis. PD-1 is an inhibitor of both adaptive and innate immune responses, and is expressed on activated T lymphocytes, natural killer (NK) cells, B lymphocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells (DCs), and monocytes, whereas PD-L1 is expressed on macrophages, some activated T and B cells, and mesenchymal stem cells as well as various non-hematopoietic cells. This systematic review aims to assess the PD-1 and PD-L1 protein expression levels and concentrations in septic and other infectious patients.

BACKGROUND
Malignant glioma is the most common intracranial malignant tumor with the highest mortality. In the era of immunotherapy, it is important to determine what type of immunotherapy provides the best chance of survival.
METHOD
Here, the efficacy and safety of immunotherapy in high-grade glioma (HGG) were evaluated by systematic review and meta-analysis. The differences between various types of immunotherapy were explored. Retrieved hits were screened for inclusion in 2,317 articles. We extracted the overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) hazard ratios (HRs) as two key outcomes for examining the efficacy of immunotherapy. We also analyzed data on the reported corresponding adverse events to assess the safety of immunotherapy. This study was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42019112356).
RESULTS
We included a total of 1,271 patients, of which 524 received a combination of immunotherapy and standard of care (SOC), while 747 received SOC alone. We found that immunotherapy extended the OS (HR = 0.74; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.56-0.99; = -2.00, = 0.0458 < 0.05) and PFS (HR = 0.67; 95% CI, 0.45-0.99; = -1.99, = 0.0466 < 0.05), although certain adverse events occurred (proportion = 0.0773, 95% CI, 0.0589-0.1014). Our data have demonstrated the efficacy of the dendritic cell (DC) vaccine in prolonging the OS (HR = 0.38; 95% CI, 0.21-0.68; Z = -3.23; = 0.0012 < 0.05) of glioma patients. Oncolytic viral therapy (VT) only extended patient survival in a subgroup analysis (HR = 0.60; 95% CI, 0.45-0.80; = -3.53; = 0.0004 < 0.05). By contrast, immunopotentiation (IP) did not prolong OS (HR = 0.69; 95% CI, 0.50-0.96; = -2.23; = 0.0256).
CONCLUSION
Thus, DC vaccination significantly prolonged the OS of HGG patients, however, the efficacy of VT and IP should be explored in further studies. All the therapeutic schemes evaluated were associated with certain side effects.

BACKGROUND
Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is a rare and aggressive hematological cancer. Due to its low incidence, researchers struggle to gather sufficient prospective data to inform clinical treatment.
OBJECTIVES
We sought to summarize the clinical characteristics and current treatment methods of BPDCN and provide more specific guidance on treatment options.
DESIGN
A systematic literature review using data from 74 Chinese BPDCN patients.
DATE RESOURCES AND METHODS
We retrospectively analyzed the clinical manifestations, treatment response, survival outcomes, and prognostic factors of six BPDCN patients treated at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University and 68 patients described in 28 articles published in the China Knowledge Network database since 2019.
RESULTS
In Chinese patients, the disease occurred with a male-to-female ratio of 2.52 and a median age of onset of 50 years in adults and 10 years in pediatric patients. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed distinctive immune phenotypes of BPDCN cells, characterized by high expression levels of CD4, CD56, CD123, and HLA-DR, while showing minimal to no expression of myeloperoxidase (MPO), CD20, and CD79a. There was no significant difference in the initial complete remission (CR) rate, relapse rate, and the overall survival (OS) time of patients receiving acute myeloid leukemia-like, acute lymphocytic leukemia-like, or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma-like chemotherapy regimens. Univariate analysis identified CD3 expression, male gender, and central nervous system infiltration as hazardous factors. In multivariate analysis, age proved to be an independent prognostic indicator, indicating better prognosis and longer OS time in younger patients. Notably, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) emerged as a significant factor in improving the survival outcomes for individuals diagnosed with BPDCN. However, further investigation is needed to explore the role of HSCT and the best timing for its implementation in pediatric BPDCN patients.
CONCLUSION
Administering HSCT during the initial CR state following inductive chemotherapy might extend the OS and improve the prognosis of patients with BPDCN.

Autologous dentritic cell immunotherapy has been proven effective in treating tumors outside the central nervous system. Current evidence from phase I and II trials suggest a similar efficacy for central nervous system tumors as well and that an active immune response against these tumors can be generated. We aim to review the literature to identify the types of immune responses against gliomas found to be generated by dendritic cell vaccinations and the types of immune cells subsequently infiltrating the glioma microenvironment. A systematic review of the literature was performed by searching the online databases PubMEd, Google Scholar, and EMBASE with use of the keywords intratumoral, infiltration, lymphocytic, vaccination and gliomas. Seven studies reporting lymphocytic infiltration of gliomas microenvironment were identified. Three studies (42.8%) reported presence of tumor infiltrating lymphocytes in 50%, 50% and 28.6% of included patients respectively in the post-vaccination specimens that were not present in the pre-vaccination samples. The remaining 4 (57.2%) reported an up to 6-fold increase in the number of pre-existing lymphocytes following vaccination. Present data indicate that tumor infiltration by lymphocytes can be induced by dentritic cell immunotherapy and that this may positively affect clinical outcome. It still remains unclear which factors influence the above reaction and therefore prediction of response to treatment is still not possible.

BACKGROUND
Renal cell cancer (RCC) is the tenth most common malignancy in adults. In recent years, several approaches of active and passive immunotherapy have been studied extensively in clinical trials of patients with RCC. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the clinical efficacy of various approaches of specific immunotherapy in patients with RCC.
METHODS
We searched Medline, Scopus, CENTRAL, TRIP, DART, OpenGrey and ProQuest without any language filter through to 9 October 2015. One author reviewed search results for irrelevant and duplicate studies and two other authors independently extracted data from the studies. We collated study findings and calculated a weighted treatment effect across studies using Review Manager (version 5.3. Copenhagen: The Nordic Cochrane Centre, the Cochrane Collaboration).
RESULTS
We identified 14 controlled studies with 4013 RCC patients after excluding irrelevant and duplicate studies from 11,319 references retrieved from a literature search. Overall, five autologous tumor cell vaccines, one peptide-based vaccine, one virus-based vaccine and one dendritic cell (DC)-based vaccine were studied in nine controlled studies of active specific immunotherapies. A total of three passive immunotherapies including autologous cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells, auto lymphocyte therapy (ALT) and autologous lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells were studied in four controlled studies. The clinical efficacy of tumor lysate-pulsed DCs, with CIK cells was studied in one controlled trial concurrently. The overall quality of studies was fair. Meta-analysis of seven studies showed that patients undergoing specific immunotherapy had significantly higher overall survival (OS) than those in the control group [hazard ratio (HR) = 0.72; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.58-0.89, = 0.003]. In addition, a meta-analysis of four studies showed that there was a significant difference in progression-free survival (PFS) between patients undergoing specific immunotherapy and patients in control groups (HR = 0.86; 95% CI = 0.73-1, = 0.05).
CONCLUSIONS
Results of this systematic review suggest that some specific immunotherapies such as Reniale, ACHN-IL-2, Newcastle disease virus (NDV) virus-infected autologous tumor cells, ALT and CIK treatment could be beneficiary for the treatment of patients with RCC.

Cytokine-induced killer cell/dendritic cell-cytokine-induced killer cell immunotherapy for the postoperative treatment of gastric cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
BACKGROUND
Immunotherapy is emerging as a new treatment strategy for gastric cancer(GC). However, the efficacy and safety of this technique remain unclear. This meta-analysis aimed to assess the effect of cytokine-induced killer cell (CIK)/dendritic cell-cytokine-induced killer cell (DC-CIK) treatment for GC after surgery.
METHODS
Hazard ratio (HR), overall survival (OS) rates, and disease-free survival (DFS) rates were calculated using a Mantel-Haenszel (M-H) fixed-effects model (FEM), and results were displayed using forest plots. Publication bias was assessed by Begg test, and data were presented using funnel plots. Date robustness was assessed by the trim and fill method. Descriptive analysis was performed on T lymphocytes and adverse effects.
RESULTS
In total, 9 trials, including 1216 patients, were eligible for inclusion in this meta-analysis. Compared with the control group, the HR for OS was 0.712 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.594-0.854) and 0.66 (95% CI 0.546-0.797) for overall (DFS). The risk ratio (RR) of the 3 and 5-year OS rate was 1.29 (95% CI 1.15-1.46) and 1.73 (95% CI 1.36-2.19), respectively. The RR for the 3 and 5-year DFS rate 1.40 (95% CI 1.19-1.65) and 2.10 (95% CI1.53-2.87), respectively. The proportion of patients who were CD3+, CD4+, and CD4+/CD8+ increased in the cellular therapy groups. No fatal adverse reactions were noted.
CONCLUSION
Chemotherapy combined with CIK/DC-CIK therapy after surgery resulted in low HR, and significantly increasing OS rates, DFS rates, and T-lymphocyte responses in patients with GC.
