The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature for in vitro and ex vivo studies that evaluated the effect of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitors during the adhesive procedure on the immediate and long-term resin-dentin bond strength. The search was conducted in 6 databases with no publication year or language limits, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. From 1,336 potentially eligible studies, 48 were selected for full-text analysis, and 30 were included for review, with 17 considered in the meta-analysis. Two reviewers independently selected the studies, extracted the data, and assessed the risk of bias. Pooled effect estimates were expressed as the weighted mean difference between groups. The most used MMP inhibitor was chlorhexidine (CHX). Immediate bond strength results showed no difference between 2% CHX and control; however, a difference was found between 0.2% CHX and control at baseline. After aging, CHX presented higher bond strength values compared to control groups (p < .05). However, this was not observed for longer periods of aging. High heterogeneity was found in some comparisons, especially for the water storage aging subgroup. Subgroup analyses showed that self-etching and etch-and-rinse adhesives are benefited by the CHX use. From the studies included, only 1 presented low risk of bias, while the others showed medium or high risk of bias. The use of MMP inhibitors did not affect the immediate bond strength overall, while it influenced the aged bond strength. Aging procedures influenced bond strength values of the dentin adhesion stability.

Matrix metalloproteinase-9 and -2 and tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase-2 in invasive pituitary adenomas: A systematic review and meta-analysis of case-control trials.
The extracellular matrix is important for tumor invasion and metastasis. Normal function of the extracellular matrix depends on the balance between matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). The objective of this meta-analysis was to assess the relationship between expression of MMP-9, MMP-2, and TIMP-2 and invasion of pituitary adenomas.We searched Pubmed, Embase, and the Chinese Biomedical Database up to October 2015. RevMan 5.1 software (Cochrane Collaboration, Copenhagen, Denmark) was used for statistical analysis. We calculated the standardized mean difference (SMD) for data expressed as mean ± standard deviation because of the difference in the detection method.Twenty-four studies (1320 patients) were included. MMP-9 expression was higher in the patients with invasive pituitary adenomas (IPAs) than patients with noninvasive pituitary adenomas (NIPAs) with detection methods of IHC [odds ratio (OR) = 5.48, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 2.61-11.50, P < 0.00001), and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (SMD = 2.28, 95% CI = 0.91-3.64, P = 0.001). MMP-2 expression was also increased in patients with IPAs at the protein level (OR = 3.58, 95% CI = 1.63-7.87, P = 0.001), and RNA level (SMD = 3.91, 95% CI = 1.52-6.29, P = 0.001). Meta-analysis showed that there was no difference in TIMP-2 expression between invasive and NIPAs at the protein level (OR = 0.38, 95% CI = 0.06-2.26, P = 0.29). MMP-9 expression in prolactinomas and nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas was also no difference (OR = 1.03, 95% CI = 0.48-2.20, P = 0.95).The results indicated that MMP-9 and -2 may be correlated with invasiveness of pituitary adenomas, although their relationship with functional status of pituitary adenomas is still not clear. TIMP-2 expression in IPAs needs to be investigated further.

Stroke is a leading cause of death, disability, and dementia worldwide. Strokes can be divided into ischemic strokes and hemorrhagic strokes. At the moment, tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is the only FDA-approved drug for ischemic stroke. Minocycline (MC) and Magnesium (Mg) are promising therapies for ischemic stroke, especially in the pre-hospital setting. These drugs are readily available, inexpensive, and generally safe. We decided to investigate these drugs' neuroprotective effects in treating ischemic stroke in the acute and chronic setting. We conducted a systematic review of the published literature on MC and Mg's functional outcome in ischemic stroke. This paper's methodology included only clinical trials published in the last 15 years, using PubMed as a database. The systematic review demonstrated that MC infusion in the pre-hospital and hospital setting improved functional outcomes and disability scores. Furthermore, MC also decreased matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) levels. MC might have a more significant effect on men than women because different molecular pathways of cerebral ischemia seem to be involved between both genders. The systematic review showed that patients with ischemic stroke did not benefit from magnesium sulfate infusion in the pre-hospital and hospital setting. Nevertheless, patients with lacunar strokes and patients who supplemented their meals with potassium-magnesium salt in the diet had better functional outcomes. Future studies would need a more significant sample of participants and a better selection to increase the study's power and avoid selection bias, respectively. Further publications could benefit from subcategorizing strokes and investigating the gender role in stroke treatment. These directives could give a more robust conclusion regarding the neuroprotective effects of these drugs.

BACKGROUND
Data from published articles on the relationship between MMP polymorphisms and prostate cancer risk are conflicted and inconclusive, so a meta-analysis and systematic review were performed to assess the relationship.
METHODS
Relevant research articles were identified from databases using a search strategy. Studies with the same MMP polymorphisms that could be quantitatively synthesized were included in the meta-analysis. Five comparison models (homozygote, heterozygote, dominant, recessive, and additive) were applied, and a subgroup analysis by case-group sample type was performed. Studies with different polymorphisms that could not be quantitatively synthesized were included in the systematic review.
RESULTS
Eleven articles encompassing 22 studies involving 12 MMP polymorphisms were included in this paper. Among the studies included, 13 studies involving MMP1 rs1799750, MMP2 rs243865, and MMP7 rs11568818 were quantitatively synthesized for meta-analysis, and the other nine studies involving nine polymorphisms (MMP2 rs2285053, MMP2 rs1477017, MMP2 rs17301608, MMP2 rs11639960, MMP3 11715A/6A, MMP3 1161A/G, MMP3 5356A/G, MMP9 rs17576, and MMP13 rs2252070) were included in the systematic review. Meta-analysis showed no associations between MMP1 rs1799750, MMP2 rs243865, or MMP7 rs11568818 and prostate cancer risk overall. Subgroup analysis by case-group sample type confirmed that no associations existed. The systematic review suggested that MMP3 11715A/6A and MMP9 rs17576 were associated with prostate cancer risk.
CONCLUSION
MMP polymorphisms are not associated with prostate cancer risk, except for MMP3 11715A/6A and MMP9 rs17576. However, it is necessary to conduct larger-scale, high-quality studies in future.

The recurrence rate in patients who undergo surgery for abdominal wall hernias (AWHs) is high. AWHs have been hypothesized to be a disease of the extracellular matrix, which is supported by evidence showing a high incidence of AWHs in patients with connective tissue disorders. This study aimed to investigate the most recent literature studies describing the levels of several matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in the blood and fascia, with the objective of better clarifying the pathogenetic role of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their inhibitors in inguinal hernias (IHs). A systematic literature search was conducted using the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science electronic databases to identify eligible studies. The identified studies were included in the analysis, and a qualitative synthesis of the results is provided to describe the most recent findings. Seventeen studies were included. An association between MMP-2 and direct IHs has also been demonstrated. MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-9, MMP-12, and MMP-13 levels were increased in both the serum and fascia of patients with IHs. The analysis of inhibitors showed an increase in tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs), specifically TIMP-1 in IHs, particularly in direct hernias, and a reduction in TIMP-2 in the biopsy samples of the transversalis fascia. In contrast, a reduction in TIMP-1 and an increase in TIMP-2 levels have been reported only in the serum of patients with IHs. Metalloproteinases play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of IHs. The analysis of other molecules, such as TIMPs or their correlation with specific genes, is enhancing our understanding of the pathophysiology of IHs. However, more prospective studies, including comprehensive clinical and laboratory data collection, are required to confirm the relationship between the studied biomarkers and the risk of IHs.

INTRODUCTION
Postsurgical knee arthrofibrosis is a common complication associated with pain and limited range of motion. Although the mechanism is unclear, many biochemical and genetic markers have been identified within arthrofibrotic knees. The purpose of this systematic review is to synthesize the many biochemical and genetic markers that have been associated with surgery-induced knee arthrofibrosis in order to better guide future therapeutic endeavors.
METHODS
A thorough search of literature was conducted on April 27, 2022. Seventeen studies met inclusion criteria for this systematic review. Inclusion criteria for this study were as follows: title or abstract discussed biochemical and genetic markers associated with postoperative knee arthrofibrosis, study design included human and/or animal subjects.
RESULTS
A wide variety of genetic biomarkers (mRNA), proteins/enzymes, and cytokines were identified in both animal models and human subjects with postsurgical knee arthrofibrosis. These included various extracellular matrix-encoding mRNA sequences, matrix metalloproteinases, proteins and mRNA sequences involved in Transforming Growth Factor-β signaling, and interleukin-family cytokines to name just a few.
CONCLUSION
There are many biomarkers found in postsurgical arthrofibrotic knees. TGF-β, and mRNA/proteins that participate in TGF-β signaling (i.e., PAI-1/Akt/mTOR, BMP-2), appear to be particularly common. Future comparative studies should aim to determine which of these are most relevant, and therefore, worthwhile therapeutic targets.

Oral verrucous carcinoma (OVC), a low-grade variant of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), is most frequently seen in the oral cavity. No clear etiology has been found for this lesion, but human papilloma virus, chewing betel nuts, and ultraviolet radiation are suggested as probable causes. Differential diagnosis of OVC is challenging for oral pathologists. The aim of this study was to review the molecular-based approaches for differential diagnosis of OVC. An electronic search was conducted in Medline and Scopus from January 2004 to July 2015 limited to English language publications. Published papers on verrucous carcinoma (VC) were found according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria and analyzed qualitatively. Data extraction were performed according to PRISMA statement. A total of 423 articles were reviewed; out of which, 26 articles completely fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Most of the included studies investigated proliferative and apoptotic biomarkers such as p53 and Ki67. No definite conclusion was drawn for cytoskeletal biomarkers due to variability of factors and lack of significant expression. However, it seems that cytokeratin10 (CK 10) can be useful for differentiation of OVC and benign squamous lesions. Among cell surface and extracellular matrix biomarkers tissue biomarkers, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2, -9, CD31 and CD68 seem to be useful for differentiation of OVC and OSCC and glucose transporter-1 (GLUT-1) can help in differentiation of OVC from oral epithelial dysplasia. Differences among OVC, OSCC and normal epithelium in expression profiles of the investigated biomarkers help in their differential diagnosis; although, clinicohistopathological similarities among verrucous hyperplasia, noninvasive OVC and invasive well-differentiated OSCC make the diagnosis difficult. Further studies are required to better differentiate these oral lesions.

BACKGROUND
Hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle play a key role in shaping immunity in the cervicovaginal tract. Cervicovaginal fluid contains cytokines, chemokines, immunoglobulins, and other immune mediators. Many studies have shown that the concentrations of these immune mediators change throughout the menstrual cycle, but the studies have often shown inconsistent results. Our understanding of immunological correlates of the menstrual cycle remains limited and could be improved by meta-analysis of the available evidence.
METHODS
We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of cervicovaginal immune mediator concentrations throughout the menstrual cycle using individual participant data. Study eligibility included strict definitions of the cycle phase (by progesterone or days since the last menstrual period) and no use of hormonal contraception or intrauterine devices. We performed random-effects meta-analyses using inverse-variance pooling to estimate concentration differences between the follicular and luteal phases. In addition, we performed a new laboratory study, measuring select immune mediators in cervicovaginal lavage samples.
RESULTS
We screened 1570 abstracts and identified 71 eligible studies. We analyzed data from 31 studies, encompassing 39,589 concentration measurements of 77 immune mediators made on 2112 samples from 871 participants. Meta-analyses were performed on 53 immune mediators. Antibodies, CC-type chemokines, MMPs, IL-6, IL-16, IL-1RA, G-CSF, GNLY, and ICAM1 were lower in the luteal phase than the follicular phase. Only IL-1α, HBD-2, and HBD-3 were elevated in the luteal phase. There was minimal change between the phases for CXCL8, 9, and 10, interferons, TNF, SLPI, elafin, lysozyme, lactoferrin, and interleukins 1β, 2, 10, 12, 13, and 17A. The GRADE strength of evidence was moderate to high for all immune mediators listed here.
CONCLUSIONS
Despite the variability of cervicovaginal immune mediator measurements, our meta-analyses show clear and consistent changes during the menstrual cycle. Many immune mediators were lower in the luteal phase, including chemokines, antibodies, matrix metalloproteinases, and several interleukins. Only interleukin-1α and beta-defensins were higher in the luteal phase. These cyclical differences may have consequences for immunity, susceptibility to infection, and fertility. Our study emphasizes the need to control for the effect of the menstrual cycle on immune mediators in future studies.

Cancers are a potential cause of death worldwide and represent a massive burden for healthcare systems. Treating cancers requires substantial resources, including skilled personnel, medications, instruments, and funds. Thus, developing cancer prevention and treatment measures is necessary for healthcare personnel and patients alike. (Polygonaceae family) is a plant used as a culinary ingredient. It exhibits several pharmacological activities, such as antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer. Several classes of phytochemical constituents of have been reported. The important ones might be polyphenol and flavonoid derivatives. In this systematic review, the activities of against cancerous cells were determined and summarized. Data were obtained through a systematic search of electronic databases (EMBASE, PubMed, Scopus, Thai Thesis Database, Science Direct and Clinical Key). Eight studies met the eligibility criteria. The cancerous cell lines used in the studies were lymphoma, leukemia, oral, lung, breast, colon, and liver cancer cells. Based on this review, extracts significantly affected Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) genome-carrying human lymphoblastoid (Raji), mouse lymphocytic leukemia (P388), human acute lymphocytic leukemia (Jurkat), breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7), human colon adenocarcinoma (HT-29), human T lymphoblast (MOLT-4), human promyelocytic leukemia cell line (HL-60), human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2), and oral squamous cell carcinoma (SAS, SCC-9, HSC-3) through induction of cell apoptosis, arrest of the cell cycle, inhibition of cell proliferation, migration, and colonization. The molecular mechanism of against cancers was reported to involve suppressing essential proteins required for cell proliferation, colonization, migration, apoptosis, and angiogenesis. They were survivin, cyclin-D, cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A). The extract of was also involved in the protein kinase B (Akt)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway by inhibiting the expression of Akt, phosphorylated Akt, mTOR, and phosphorylated mTOR. From the key results of this review, is a promising chemotherapy and chemopreventive agent. Further investigation of its pharmacological activity and mechanism of action should be conducted using standardized extracts. experiments and clinical trials are required to confirm the anticancer activity.

The need to predict, diagnose and treat peri-implant diseases has never been greater. We present a systematic review of the literature on the changes in the expression of biomarkers in peri-implant crevicular fluid (PICF) before and after treatment of peri-implantitis. Bacterial composition, clinical and radiographic parameters, and systemic biomarkers before and after treatment are reported as secondary outcomes. A total of 17 studies were included. Treatment groups were non-surgical treatment or surgical treatment, either alone or with adjunctive therapy. Our findings show that non-surgical treatment alone does not influence biomarker levels or clinical outcomes. Both adjunctive photodynamic therapy and local minocycline application resulted in a reduction of interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-10 twelve months after treatment. Non-surgical treatments with adjunctive use of lasers or antimicrobials were more effective at improving the clinical outcomes in the short-term only. Access flap debridement led to matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-8 and tumour necrosis factor-α reduction twelve months post-surgery. Surgical debridement with adjunctive antimicrobials achieved a decrease in MMP-8 at three months. Adjunctive use of Emdogain (EMD) was associated with a reduction in 40 PICF proteins compared to access flap surgery alone. Surgical interventions were more effective at reducing probing pocket depth and bleeding on probing both in the short- and long-term. Surgical treatment in combination with EMD was found to be more effective in resolving inflammation up to twelve months.
