The periodontium has important proprioceptive receptors that prevent teeth from using excessive occlusal forces during chewing. There are other receptors from adjacent tissues that replace periodontal ones when teeth are extracted and rehabilitated with prosthesis, although they seem to be less effective. Psychophysical studies investigate tactile sensibility thresholds, which are useful to measure this masticatory efficiency in different prosthetic rehabilitations. There are two types of sensibility depending on the receptors that are activated during these studies: active and passive tactile sensibility. The purpose of this study is to obtain active and passive tactile sensibility threshold figures in natural dentition and prosthetic rehabilitations so we can compare them and understand how this sensibility works in different situations. We performed a systematic review of the available literature, following PRISMA guidelines and including articles from 2004 to 2021 in the MEDLINE database. Only 10 articles were included in this investigation as they provided concrete threshold figures. The mean values of active tactile sensibility thresholds in complete dentures, implant prosthesis and natural dentition are 64 µ, 23.3 µ and 16.1 µ, respectively. The mean values of passive tactile sensibility thresholds in implant prosthesis and natural dentition are 6.7 N and 0.8 N, respectively. Implant prosthesis have lower thresholds, that are very close to those present in natural dentition, than complete dentures due to an increased tactile sensibility. Active tactile sensibility thresholds present fewer differences between values than passive tactile ones; as these are only influenced by receptors from periodontal or periimplant tissues.

Evidence-based knowledge on the aesthetics and maintenance of peri-implant soft tissues: Osteology Foundation Consensus Report Part 2-Effects of hard tissue augmentation procedures on the maintenance of peri-implant tissues.
OBJECTIVES
One task of Working Group 1 at the 2nd Consensus Meeting of the Osteology Foundation was to comprehensively assess the effects of hard tissue augmentation procedures on peri-implant health or disease.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
One systematic review and meta-analysis on the effects of hard tissue augmentation procedures included a total of eight studies (n = 12 publications). Consensus statements, clinical recommendations, and implications for future research were based on structured group discussions and plenary session approval.
RESULTS
After 1-10 years of follow- up, lateral bone augmentation procedures were associated with peri-implant tissue stability, as evidenced by minimal and non-significant changes in bleeding on probing, probing depth, and marginal bone levels. Case definitions based on clinical and radiographic parameters to differentiate peri-implant health from disease have been inconsistently employed in the studies investigated.
CONCLUSIONS
Lateral bone augmentation procedures are associated with peri-implant tissue stability on short-term (1-3 years) and midterm follow-ups to long-term (>3 years) follow-ups.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of techniques for soft tissue augmentation in the placement of immediate implants with and without provisionalization and to assess the quality of the reports in the literature. Randomized clinical trials, prospective clinical trials, and case series were included in this review. Clinical questions were formulated and organised according to the PICOS strategy. An electronic search was performed in PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Scopus, and ISI Web up until June 2016. Interexaminer agreement on eligibility (k = 0.842; p = 0.103) and quality (k = 0.933; p < 0.001) was high. Methodological approaches were assessed using criteria based on design related forms designed by the Dutch Cochrane Collaboration. Finally, 14 papers were identified. In two studies, the implant survival was 90%; for the rest of the studies it was 100%. All studies reported favourable aesthetic, biological, and radiographic outcomes. Surgical and biomechanical complications of this technique were not relevant. This technique effectively compensates for the expected loss of volume of the oral soft tissues and maintains high success rates with good aesthetic results over time.

OBJECTIVES
To overview preclinical animal trials and quantify the effect size that stem cell therapy has on the regeneration of periodontal tissue complex.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
A systematic MEDLINE (PubMed) online library search was conducted for preclinical animal studies , using autologous periodontal ligament, dental pulp, cementum, alveolar periosteal, gingival margin or adipose stem cell types for periodontal tissue complex regeneration purposes. Studies had to be published between 2007.09.01 and 2017.09.01 in the English language.
RESULTS
Online library search yielded 2099 results. After the title, abstract and full-text screening ten studies fit inclusion criteria and were pooled into meta-analysis. Overall the stem cell regenerative therapy had a statistically significant positive influence on the periodontal tissue regeneration when compared to the control groups. The biggest influence was made to the regeneration of cementum (standardised mean difference [SMD] 2.25 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.31 to 3.2]) while the smallest influence was made to the alveolar bone (SMD 1.47 [95% CI = 0.7 to 2.25]) the effect size for periodontal ligament regeneration was (SMD 1.8 [95% CI = 1 to 2.59]). Subgroup analysis showed statistically significant (P < 0.05) differences between different cell types in the alveolar bone and cementum regeneration groups and in alveolar bone group in relation to scaffold materials.
CONCLUSIONS
Stem cell therapy has a positive impact on periodontal tissue complex regeneration. Such therapy has the biggest influence on cementum regeneration meanwhile alveolar bone regeneration is influenced by the least amount. However more and less diverse preclinical studies are needed to have a greater statistical power in future meta-analyses.

INTRODUCTION
Although the fact that the association of the periodontitis and the diabetes mellitus is well accepted, the literature has inconsistent findings regarding this connection. The motive in conducting this systematic review was to define whether poorly controlled diabetes was linked to the development or progression of periodontitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Databases from PubMed, Scopus, and Embase were searched electronically. All included articles' reference lists were manually searched. Google Scholar was used to research gray literature. For this review, longitudinal studies (prospective) on the association between periodontitis and diabetes were taken into consideration. Studies have to have included at least two parameters of the evolution of health of the periodontium throughout time. The study's design, as well as unadjusted and adjusted estimates, was recorded. This study calculated the combined impact of diabetes-related hyperglycemia on the start or progression of periodontitis using meta-analysis. To look into possible sources of study heterogeneity, subgroup analyses and meta-regression were used.
RESULTS
With 49,262 participants from 13 studies that met the inclusion criteria, 3197 of whom had been diagnosed with diabetes. Diabetes augmented the likelihood of developing or progressing into periodontitis by 86%, according to meta-analyses of adjusted estimates (RR 1.86; 95% CI 1.3-2.8). On the association between periodontitis and diabetes, there is little data, nonetheless.
CONCLUSIONS
This study provides proof that persons with diabetes have an increased risk of developing periodontitis. Methodological limitations mentioned in this study should be overcome in upcoming prospective longitudinal investigations.

OBJECTIVE
This study aims to systematically evaluate the effects of traumatic occlusion on the periodontal tissue of rats. The set of questions to be answered were-Can traumatic occlusion acting on a healthy and an unhealthy periodontium cause periodontal destruction?
DESIGN
The protocols for systematic review were all developed, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses statement and applied to animal research. Reporting of In vivo experiment guidelines for reporting animal research to assess the risk of bias of the studies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
A literature search was conducted using MEDLINE through PubMed and manual search from the reference lists of main articles related to the theme.
RESULTS
This search strategy identified 65 references, of which 33 were considered inappropriate. The full texts of 32 articles were read, 31 of which did not meet the eligibility criteria and were excluded. The final selection included 1 article for which data was extracted for further evaluation. The article included shows a strongest reaction in the periodontium in front of a secondary occlusal trauma as inflammation and apical migration of the junctional epithelium, bone degradation, and decrease in the quantity of collagen fiber. However, primary occlusal trauma also presents these alterations, with the exception of apical migration of the junctional epithelium.
CONCLUSIONS
Although only one study was included in the systematic review of traumatic occlusion, there is some evidence from experimental studies on animals that shows a coherent picture of the effects of traumatic occlusion on the periodontium. However, new studies are needed to fully answer the questions posed by this systematic review.

PURPOSE
The true benefit of autologous platelet concentrates (APCs) for enhancing the healing of postextraction sites is still a matter of debate, and in recent years several clinical trials have addressed this issue. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of an APC adjunct in the preservation of fresh extraction sockets.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
An electronic search was performed on Medline, Embase, Scopus, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Only controlled clinical trials or randomized clinical trials were included. Selected articles underwent risk-of-bias assessment. The outcomes were complications and adverse events, discomfort and quality of life, bone healing and remodeling assessed by histologic and radiographic techniques, and soft tissue healing.
RESULTS
Thirty-three comparative studies were included. Nine articles had a parallel design and 24 had a split-mouth design. Twenty studies were considered to have a low risk of bias and 13 were considered to have a high risk. Overall, 1,193 teeth were extracted from 911 patients. Meta-analysis showed that soft tissue healing, probing depth at 3 months, and bone density at 1, 3, and 6 months were statistically better for the APC group. Qualitative analysis suggested that APCs might be associated with a decrease in swelling and trismus. However, no relevant difference among groups was found for probing depth at 1 month, incidence of alveolar osteitis, acute inflammation or infection, percentage of new bone, and indirect measurement of bone metabolism.
CONCLUSION
APCs should be used in postextraction sites to improve clinical and radiographic outcomes such as bone density and soft tissue healing and postoperative symptoms. The actual benefit of APCs on decreasing pain in extraction sockets is still not quantifiable.

INTRODUCTION
Oral contraceptives are one of the risk factors for gingival disease. Oral contraceptives can affect the proliferation of cell, growth and differentiation of tissues in the periodontium. Nowadays recent research has suggested that the newer generation oral contraceptives have less influence on gingival diseases.
AIM
The purpose of this study was to systematically review the effect of oral contraceptives on periodontium.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
A literature review was performed; PubMed, PubMed Central and Cochrane Library, Embase, Google Scholar were searched from 1970 up to December 2015 to identify appropriate studies.
RESULTS
Out of the total 94 titles appeared 13 articles fulfilled the criteria and were selected for the review. Two articles which were hand searched and one article which was through e-mail was also included. The hormones progesterone and estrogen have direct impact on immune system of the body and thus, affect the pattern and rate of collagen production in the gingiva. Furthermore, the review also shows that longer duration usage of oral contraceptive could lead to poorer oral hygiene status, gingival inflammation and increased susceptibility to periodontal disease.
CONCLUSION
There are relatively few studies evaluating the effect of oral contraceptives on periodontium. It was found that oral contraceptives have a marked effect on periodontium. The gingival changes after use of oral contraceptives are pronounced in the first few months and with the passage of time these changes get enhanced.

The impact of dietary consistency on structural craniofacial components: Temporomandibular joint/condyle, condylar cartilage, alveolar bone and periodontal ligament. A systematic review and meta-analysis in experimental in vivo research.
OBJECTIVE
The aim of this systematic review was to provide a comprehensive synthesis of available evidence evaluating the effect of dietary loading on temporomandibular joint/condyle, condylar cartilage, alveolar bone of the mandible and the periodontal ligament in healthy mice and rats.
DESIGN
Medline via PubMed, EMBASE and Open Grey databases were searched for published and unpublished literature. Search terms included "mandiblular condyle", "alveolar bone", "temporomandibular joint", "condylar cartilage", "periodontal ligament", "rat", "mice". After data extraction, risk of bias (SYRCLE) and reporting quality (ARRIVE) were assessed. Random effects meta-analyses were performed for the outcomes of interest where applicable.
RESULTS
A total of 33 relevant articles were considered in the systematic review, while only 6 studies were included in the quantitative synthesis. Risk of Bias in all studies was judged to be unclear to high overall, while reporting quality was suboptimal. Comparing soft to hard diet animals, significantly reduced anteroposterior condylar length (4 studies, weighted mean difference: -0.40 mm; 95% CI: -0.47, -0.32; p < 0.001) and width (4 studies, weighted mean difference: -0.043 mm; 95% CI: -0.51, -0.36; p < 0.001) were found in rats. Decreased anteroposterior condylar dimensions were detected for mice as well (2 studies, weighted mean difference: -0.049; 95% CI: -0.56, -0.43; p < 0.001).
CONCLUSIONS
Overall, there was strong evidence to suggest a significant effect of soft diet on reduced condylar dimensions in rodents; however, there is need for further high quality experimental studies to inform current knowledge on condylar cartilage, alveolar bone and periodontal ligament related outcomes.

BACKGROUND
A laser-microtextured surface (LMS) dental implant collar appears to promote a more tooth-like gingival collagen fiber attachment, which may help to stabilize peri-implant tissues. The purpose of this systematic review is to assess the clinical effect of an LMS versus non-LMS collar on crestal bone level and peri-implant soft tissue response.
METHODS
Electronic and manual literature searches were performed by two independent reviewers for articles written in English up to December 2016. Studies were included if they were human clinical trials with the purpose of evaluating the impact of an LMS collar on peri-implant hard and soft tissues. Cumulative marginal bone loss (MBL), probing depth (PD), and survival rate (SR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to show the performance of LMS implant collars. MBL, PD, and SR data were analyzed with a random effects model to compare the influence of LMS collars with non-LMS collars (e.g., roughened surface and machined surface).
RESULTS
Fifteen human clinical studies (three randomized controlled trials, six cohort studies, and six case series) with 772 implants met the inclusion criteria. For the overall data, the weighted mean MBL was 0.72 mm (95% CI: 0.59 to 0.85 mm), PD was 1.81 mm (95% CI: 1.13 to 2.49 mm), and SR was 0.97 (95% CI: 0.95 to 0.98). MBL around an LMS collar was significantly less than around machined-surface collars (weighted mean difference [WMD]: -0.77; 95% CI: -1.01 to -0.52; I = 95.2%; P <0.001). PD in the LMS group was significantly shallower than in the machined-surface group (WMD: -1.34; 95% CI: -1.62 to -1.05; I = 81.4%; P <0.001). However, no statistically significant difference was detected for MBL between the LMS and roughened-surface groups (WMD: -0.04; 95% CI: -0.16 to 0.08; I = 0.0%; P = 0.75). No statistically significant difference was found for SR between the LMS and non-LMS groups (risk ratio: 1.01; 95% CI: 0.97 to 1.04; I = 0.0%; P = 0.91).
CONCLUSIONS
Meta-analysis showed that an LMS collar can reduce the amount of MBL and PD compared with a machined-surface collar. Due to high heterogeneity between the included studies, results should be interpreted cautiously.
