Review
Marine natural products have been recognized as the most promising source of bioactive substances for drug discovery research. This review illustrates the diversity of culturable actinobacteria associated with marine algae, their bioactivity and metabolites, and approaches to their isolation and determination of their biological properties. Furthermore, actinobacteria associated with marine algae are presented as a new subject for an extensive investigation to find novel and active natural products, which make them a potentially rich and innovative source for new drug development deserving more attention and exploration.

OBJECTIVE
This study aimed to investigate the incidence of Actinomyces in tonsillar tissues of patients undergoing tonsillectomy and to determine the association among tonsillar volume, preoperative antibiotic use, and presence of Actinomyces in tonsil tissues.
METHODS
In this study, 142 patients who underwent tonsillectomy in last four years were included. Of the total patients, 97 (66.9%) were children and 47 (33.1%) were adults. The patients' age, sex, preoperative antibiotic use, tonsillar volume, and presence of actinomyces in tonsillar tissues were recorded.
RESULTS
Actinomyces was identified in tonsillar tissues of 16 (16.4%) pediatric and 21 (44.6%) adult patients. Of all pediatric patients positive for Actinomyces, 13 were males and three were females whereas of all adult patients positive for actinomyces, 14 were males and seven were females. Tonsillar tissue volumes in both pediatric and adult patients positive for Actinomyces were statistically higher than the Actinomyces negative ones. Antibiotic use was higher and the incidence of Actinomyces was lower in pediatric patients than in adult patients positive for Actinomyces.
CONCLUSION
Our study results revealed that Actinomyces was prominent in adult patients with tonsillar hypertrophy. In addition, the frequent use of antibiotic decreased the incidence of Actinomyces in tonsillar tissues.

BACKGROUND
Hepatic Actinomycosis (HA) is one of the infections that causes disorders in patients when diagnosed untimely and inappropriately.
METHODS
Case reports on HA in patients published between 2000 and April 2020 were gathered by carrying out a structured search through PubMed/Medline.
RESULTS
Through a survey of the Medline database, 130 studies were identified and then, 64 cases with HA were included in the final analysis. Asia had the largest share of cases with 37.5% (24 reports), followed by Europe and the Americas. Affected patients were predominantly males (64%) and the overall mortality rate was 1% with only one male patient in his 50 s dying. Nearly all patients (92%) were immunocompetent. However, in four patients, the use of immunosuppressive medication led to depression of the immune system. Most of the patients (80%) experienced complications. In terms of the complications, the most frequent ones were previous history of abdominal surgery (32%) and foreign bodies in the abdominopelvic region (20%). Actinomyces israelii was the most common pathogen isolated from patients. Abdominal pain (66%), fever (62%), weight loss (48%), night sweat, malaise, and anorexia (14%) over about 3.1 months were the most frequently reported clinical symptoms. Extension to one or more surrounding organs was evident in 18 patients (28%). Histopathologic examination confirmed infection in 67% of the patients and samples obtained from liver puncture biopsy (32%) were most frequently used in diagnosis. Surgery or puncture drainage + anti-infection was the most common method to treat patients and penicillin, Amoxicillin, Doxycycline, and ampicillin were the most frequently used drugs to control infection.
CONCLUSION
HA should be considered in patients with a subacute or chronic inflammatory process of the liver. With accurate and timely diagnosis of infection, extensive surgery can be prevented.

In Antarctic terrestrial ecosystems, dominant plant species (grasses and mosses) and soil physicochemical properties have a significant influence on soil microbial communities. However, the effects of dominant plants on bacterial antagonistic interactions in Antarctica remain unclear. We hypothesized that dominant plant species can affect bacterial antagonistic interactions directly and indirectly by inducing alterations in soil physicochemical properties and bacterial abundance. We collected soil samples from two typical dominant plant species; the Antarctic grass and the Antarctic moss as well as bulk soil sample, devoid of vegetation. We evaluated bacterial antagonistic interactions, focusing on species from the genera , , and . We also measured soil physicochemical properties and evaluated bacterial abundance and diversity using high-throughput sequencing. Our results suggested that Antarctic dominant plants significantly influenced bacterial antagonistic interactions compared to bulk soils. Using structural equation modelling (SEM), we compared and analyzed the direct effect of grasses and mosses on bacterial antagonistic interactions and the indirect effects through changes in edaphic properties and bacterial abundance. SEMs showed that (1) grasses and mosses had a significant direct influence on bacterial antagonistic interactions; (2) grasses had a strong influence on soil water content, pH, and abundances of and and (3) mosses influenced bacterial antagonistic interactions by impacting abundances of , , and . This study highlights the role of dominant plants in modulating bacterial antagonistic interactions in Antarctic terrestrial ecosystems.

INTRODUCTION
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition initiated by microorganisms and is positively linked to systemic conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes mellitus.
OBJECTIVES
To prospectively investigate associations between empirically derived clusters of IgG antibodies against 19 selected periodontal microorganisms and cancer mortality in a representative sample of the US population.
METHODS
We evaluated 6,491 participants aged ≥40 y from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1988 to 1994), who had complete data on IgG antibody titers against 19 selected periodontal microorganisms and were free of cardiovascular disease and cancer. In a prior study, antibodies were categorized into 4 mutually exclusive groups via cluster analysis: red-green, orange-red, yellow-orange, and orange-blue. Cluster scores were estimated by summing z scores of the antibody titers making up each cluster. Participants were followed up to death until December 31, 2011. Cox proportional hazard models were applied to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs for all-cancer mortality by tertiles of cluster scores.
RESULTS
During follow-up for a median of 15.9 y, there were 2,702 deaths (31.3%), including 631 cancer-related deaths (8.1%). After adjusting for multiple confounders, the orange-blue cluster was inversely associated with cancer mortality (tertile 2 vs. tertile 1: HR = 0.67, 95% CI = 0.54 to 0.84; tertile 3 vs tertile 1: HR = 0.62, 95% CI = 0.46 to 0.84). The association between the yellow-orange cluster and all-cancer mortality was also inverse but not significant, and the orange-red cluster and the red-green cluster were not associated with all-cancer mortality.
CONCLUSIONS
Antibodies against Eubacterium nodatum and Actinomyces naeslundii may be novel predictors of cancer mortality. If further studies establish a causal relationship between these antibodies and cancer mortality, they could be targets to prevent possible systemic effects of periodontal disease with potential interventions to raise their levels.
KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER STATEMENT
Periodontal antibodies against Eubacterium nodatum and Actinomyces naeslundii were inversely associated with cancer mortality among adults followed up for an average of 16 y. Periodontal antibodies may predict cancer mortality.

Actinomycosis is an uncommon, chronic granulomatous disease caused by the filamentous, gram-positive bacterium It causes indolent, painful wound infections commonly presenting with oral-cervicofacial manifestations, but other infections of the chest wall and gastrointestinal and genital tract are also seen. A high level of suspicion is required for diagnosis, as it may be missed or mistaken for malignancy. Severe cases may involve the central nervous system and require surgical intervention. We present a case report of actinomycosis causing a brain abscess.

Coronary artery interventions are safe procedures yet have a risk of stent infection, bacteremia and sepsis, events that are rare but with high morbidity and mortality sequel. A few prior cases had reported post percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) infections, abscesses and sepsis due to , followed by Cardiac Actinomyces infections are extremely rare. Here we report a case of a 50 year old patient who developed a post intervention epicardial abscess occluding right coronary artery with subsequent bacteremia eventually requiring open heart surgery. He was treated during and thereafter with IV penicillin and ceftriaxone for almost 8 weeks. We highlight during this review the available literature regarding risk factors, the possible theories of acquiring such bacterium at this unusual site as well as our patient's course and treatment outcome.

Breast abscesses can be a complication of infectious mastitis or the first presentation of a breast infection, presenting as pain, erythema, and a lump. Actinomycosis is a rare chronic disease caused by anaerobic branched filamentous gram-positive bacteria belonging to the genus. It is usually found in the human mouth, digestive tract, and genital tract but can also cause breast abscesses. Actinomycosis affecting the breast is a rare condition that typically occurs as a secondary infection resulting from a pulmonary infection. It is primary when inoculation occurs through the nipple. This report describes the case of a 48-year-old institutionalized female with periareolar swelling in the right breast that had been evolving for approximately two months. The abscess was drained, and the aspirated material contained , a gram-positive bacterium. Actinomycosis of the breast can manifest as either a sinus tract or mass-like features that closely resemble malignancy. The clinical presentation can pose challenges in distinguishing between primary actinomycosis, mastitis, and inflammatory carcinoma. Treatment consists of drainage with needle aspiration or surgical drainage and antibiotic therapy.

is a filamentous, gram-positive anaerobic bacterium commonly found in the upper gastrointestinal tract, colon, and female genital tract. Rarely, actinomycosis can infect the pancreas most commonly after pancreatic instrumentation, often mimicking malignancy. We describe a case of a 26-year-old woman who presented with epigastric abdominal pain and nausea without prior pancreatic instrumentation. Abdominal imaging demonstrated a mass in the pancreatic head with fine-needle biopsy revealing . The patient was successfully treated with long-term antibiotic therapy resulting in resolution of the mass. Our case emphasizes the importance of considering nonmalignant etiologies in the differential diagnosis of pancreatic masses.

Co-culture is an efficient strategy for natural product discovery. We have used mycolic acid-containing bacteria (MACB) Tsukamurella pumonis TP-B0596 to induce secondary metabolism by actinomycetes and have found several natural products. We also observed that MACB attached to the mycelium of Streptomyces lividans forming coaggregates during combined-culture. This stimulated interest in the interactions among actinomycetes and MACB, and we found that soil isolated cultures contained a mixture of actinomycetes and MACB. Our previously observed interactions were the result of selective screening and combination of bacteria in the lab, which warranted investigation of the existence of these interactions in the natural soil environment. Therefore, in this paper, we report the interaction between a co-isolated natural pair of actinomycetes and MACB in terms of morphology and metabolic changes. A natural pair of actinomycetes and MACB co-aggregated in liquid culture and showed metabolic changes. Interestingly, co-aggregated actinomycetes and MACB were re-isolated from soil with no obvious morphological colony differences from the colony of a single strain. The results demonstrate that there is a stochastic chance of picking colonies containing co-aggregated actinomycetes and MACB, which suggests that the pair can exist in co-aggregate form in the soil environment and interact with each other.
