Although children with oral clefts have a higher risk for dental anomalies when compared with the general population, prior studies have shown conflicting results regarding their dental decay risk. Also, few studies have assessed dental decay risk in unaffected relatives of children with clefts. Thus, the question of increased risk of dental decay in individuals with oral clefts or their unaffected relatives is still open for empirical investigation. This study characterizes dental decay in the largest international cohort to date of children with nonsyndromic clefts and their relatives, as compared with controls, and it addresses whether families with oral clefts have a significantly increased risk for dental decay versus the general population. A total of 3,326 subjects were included: 639 case probands, 1,549 unaffected relatives, and 1,138 controls. Decay was identified from in-person dental examinations or intraoral photographs. Case-control differences were tested with regression analysis. No significant differences were shown in percentage decayed and filled teeth and decayed teeth in the primary dentition (dft, dt) and permanent dentition (DFT, DT) in cases versus controls. In the cleft region, no significant differences were seen in primary or permanent decay (dt, DT) when compared with controls. No difference was found with regard to cleft type and percentage dft, dt, DFT, and DT in case probands. Nonsignificant differences were found in unaffected siblings and parents versus controls (primary and permanent dentitions). Collectively, these findings indicate that individuals with nonsyndromic oral clefts and their families do not have a higher dental decay risk as compared with the general population. These results suggest that either genetic or environmental factors underlying a higher susceptibility for dental anomalies do not increase caries risk or that the seemingly higher risk for dental decay associated with increased dental anomalies in case probands may be superseded by possible greater access to dental care.

BACKGROUND
Using salivary microbiota as an accurate proxy for monitoring supragingival microbiota remains controversial because their relationship remains unclear. The eruption of permanent teeth and the exfoliation of primary teeth in mixed dentition greatly alter microbial habitats, which may cause compositional shifts of oral microbiota from childhood to adults.
OBJECTIVE
This study's purpose was to assess whether saliva represents a suitable sample for monitoring supragingival microbiota in healthy people, and to explore how the replacement process of deciduous teeth with permanent teeth in mixed dentition influences microbiota within the oral cavity.
DESIGN
Samples of saliva and of supragingival plaque from permanent and deciduous teeth were collected separately from 20 healthy children with mixed dentition. To characterize their microbial communities, we used the V3-V4 hypervariable region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequence.
RESULTS
Saliva harbored a less even and less diverse community than did the plaque. Discriminating genera, namely Rothia and Streptococcus, contributed to the saliva and plaque differentiation. About half of predicted KEGG pathways varied between the plaque and saliva communities. Oral bacteria showed significantly associations between their supragingival and salivary states. We identified 20 supragingival plaque-related genera in saliva, such as Corynebacterium, Capnocytophaga, Fusobacterium, and Neisseria. Additionally, the relative abundance of Actinobacteria peaked in the permanent teeth plaque but subsided in deciduous teeth plaque and saliva. The exfoliation of deciduous teeth and eruption of permanent teeth might be related to the reported fluctuation in the relative abundance of Actinobacteria from primary dentition to permanent dentition within the oral cavity. The variation between PT and DT was due mainly to permanent teeth being enriched in Actinomyces and deciduous teeth in Treponema.
CONCLUSION
These results suggested that the supragingival plaque-related bacteria could be suitable candidates when sampling saliva for monitoring supragingival microbiota. The replacement process of deciduous teeth with permanent teeth in mixed dentition might be related to the reported age-maturation of phylum Actinobacteria in the oral cavity.

Quantitative genetic analyses can indicate how complex traits respond to natural selection by demonstrating the genetic relationships between features that constrain their evolution. Genetic correlations between dental measurements have been estimated previously in baboons, humans, and tamarins and indicate variable patterns of modularity by tooth type across these taxa. Here, heritabilities of, and genetic correlations between, linear dental measurements were estimated from the Cayo Santiago rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). Relationships between the genetic correlation matrix and matrices designed to test hypotheses of modularity by tooth type, region, function, and development were assessed using a random skewers approach. Dental measurements were found to be moderately to highly heritable, with 24 of 28 heritability estimates differing significantly (p < 0.05) from zero. Almost all genetic correlations between dental dimensions were positive. The genetic correlation matrix was most similar to a regionally modular matrix, with distinct anterior and postcanine tooth modules. This pattern is consistent with previous quantitative genetic analyses of baboons and previous phenotypic analyses of cercopithecoid primates. The existence of a genetic module for the canines and honing premolar was not supported. Ongoing selection pressures, rather than strong genetic constraints, are likely necessary to preserve functional relationships between the canines and honing premolar based on these findings. The genetic correlation matrix of the Cayo Santiago rhesus macaques mirrors patterns of phenotypic correlations observed for cercopithecoid primates broadly and demonstrates that genetic contributions to these patterns may be fairly stable over the course of cercopithecoid evolution. The quantitative genetic study of additional taxa will be necessary to determine whether the regional modularity of baboons and macaques, or the integrated pattern of humans and tamarins, is shared more broadly across primates.

This systematic review aimed to assess bite force measurements in children and adolescents and to study the various devices that measure Maximum Voluntary Bite Force (MVBF). This systematic review included observational studies and experimental studies in children and adolescents (upto 19 years of age) which evaluated MVBF using a bite force measuring device. Studies on participants with systemic conditions were excluded. Databases such as PubMed, Embase, LILACS, and the Cochrane library were searched until September 2022, for which screening and quality assessment were performed. Newcastle-Ottawa, modified Newcastle-Ottawa and ROBINS-I tools were used to assess the Risk-of-bias. All observational studies reporting overall bite force values of participants were included for meta-analyses. A total of 8864 participants (3491 males and 3623 females) were included from 61 studies. Meta-analyses were conducted to evaluate mean average bite force value for each included dentition using R software v2.4-0. Estimation was done to derive an average BF value for variables such as age (dentition), gender, side, site, device and ethnicity. MVBF values were reported as mean average in the form of MLN with 95% CI (Confidence Interval). Using a random-effects model, 29 forest plots were generated. I values varied between 90% and 100%. Bite force ranged from 246.22 N (220.47; 274.98) to 311.72 N (255.99; 379.59) and 489.35 N (399.86; 598.87) in primary, mixed, and permanent dentitions, respectively. Six different sites for recording bite force and 11 different types of devices were reported with portable occlusal bite force gauge being the most common device. Outcomes of this review provide useful baseline reference values of bite force for clinicians and researchers.

AIM
Ectopic eruption of the first permanent molar (EFUPM) is defined as its local disturbed eruptive behaviour, positioning too mesially against the distal aspect of the second upper primary molar during the developing mixed dentition. The EFUPM prevalence is up to 6% and affects both genders equally. The present study aimed to perform a scoping review to collect the most relevant studies published in the last 30 years and focused on the different strategies, traditional and novel, for treating irreversible uni- or bilateral EFUPM in children. This review also aimed to make recommendations and map the gaps in this clinical topic.
METHODS
An electronic and manual search was conducted in five databases according to previously established eligibility criteria, using different combinations of keywords, MeSH terms, and Boolean operators. Titles, abstracts, and full-text articles were screened and selected by pre-calibrated reviewers. A data charting was also accomplished for summarising the overview of the evidence.
CONCLUSION
Paediatric dentists must learn to diagnose and treat this condition early in order to allow the prevention of future malocclusions and other clinical sequelae. Practitioners have at their disposal a variety of corrective options available for the successful resolution of EFUPM.

In this study, we investigated dental arch forms in a representative sample of children with mixed dentition. Twenty-four pairs of study models, belonging to twenty-four youngsters (twelve boys and twelve girls aged 8 to 9 years) with acceptable occlusion, were scanned and assessed by Ortho analyzer software. Three transversal and three vertical measurements were acquired to evaluate the lengths and widths of dental arches, and the ratios between these measurements were standardized. Next, the mean standardized parameters were used to define the dental arch form. Unpaired -tests were used to analyze gender differences for all measures. Subsequently, frequencies and percentages were determined for each arch shape in both jaws and genders, and Pearson's Chi-squared test was used to evaluate differences between genders. Males exhibited higher mean values for all measurements, but without statistical significance. The most prevalent dental arch was the mid form (83.3%) for both jaws and genders.

OBJECTIVE
This study, using a retrospective analysis of nationwide dental records of school-going children over 8 years, aims to identify childhood factors associated with dental caries incidence in the permanent dentition up to adolescence.
METHODS
Students studying in primary and secondary schools in Singapore are eligible for free basic dental care under the nationwide School Dental Service (SDS). All available dental records, general health records, and sociodemographic data from 2009 to 2017 were extracted as anonymised records, for a full cohort of 29,617 students that were enrolled in Primary 1 in 2009. Multiple logistic regression and modified Poisson regression were applied to identify risk factors for caries incidence in the permanent dentition over 8 years.
RESULTS
Caries occurred in the permanent dentition of 9389 (31.7%) students in the 8 years. Risk of caries incidence in the permanent dentition was associated with baseline caries in the primary (risk ratio [RR]: 1.88; 95% CI: 1.81, 1.95) and permanent (RR: 1.54; 95% CI: 1.47, 1.61) dentition, tooth hypoplasia (RR: 1.58; 95% CI: 1.49, 1.68), and poor baseline oral hygiene (RR: 1.07; 95% CI: 1.03, 1.12). Sociodemographic predictors of caries incidence include a lower socioeconomic status, Chinese ethnicity, female gender, and enrolment in nonmainstream schools or schools in the Eastern and Western regions of Singapore.
CONCLUSIONS
Both clinical and sociodemographic factors in childhood are associated with caries incidence in the permanent dentition and can be used for structuring dental service provision and identifying caries-susceptible individuals and groups for early prevention and intervention.

BACKGROUND
During the intrusion of lower incisors with clear aligners (CAs), root disengagement from the alveolar bone often occurs, resulting in serious complications. This study aimed to determine the potential force mechanism of the mandibular anterior teeth under the pressure of CA, providing theoretical data for clinical practice.
METHODS
In this study, a 3D finite element model was established, including the CA, periodontal ligament, and mandibular dentition. Incisor mandibular plane angles were set as 5 groups: 90°, 95°, 100°, 105°, and 110°. The 4 mandibular incisors were intruded by 0.2 mm, while the canines were the anchorage teeth. The stress, force systems, and potential movement trends of mandibular anterior teeth were obtained.
RESULTS
The compressive stress of the incisors was concentrated in the lingual fossa, incisal ridge, and apex. With the increase in IMPA, the moment of central incisors changed from lingual crown moment to labial crown moment, with the turning point between 100° and 105°, but the center of resistance (CR) was always subjected to the force toward the lingual and intrusive direction. The force and moment toward the labial side of the lateral incisors were greater than those toward the central incisors. The canines always tipped distally and received extrusive force with no relationship with IMPA.
CONCLUSIONS
With the increase in the initial IMPA, the direction of labiolingual force on the mandibular incisors was reversed. However, the root of the lower incisors always tipped labially, which indicated fenestration and dehiscence.

Dental anomalies occurring in deciduous teeth can affect the eruption of the permanent dentition and the occlusion stability. The occurrence of dental anomalies such as double teeth during the primary dentition in the daily practice might be frequent. The study aimed to qualitatively summarize the therapeutic management of double teeth in primary incisors. A systematic review regarding the therapy of primary fused incisors in the mandible was performed and the obtained data were assessed according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The following electronic databases were screened from 1st January, 1996 until 30th July, 2019: PubMed, Scopus, EBSCO and the archives of paediatric dental journals. The search terms were grouped in anatomic entity: ( OR OR ), pathological condition: ( OR OR OR ), intervention: ( OR OR OR OR OR OR ), observed parameters: ( OR OR ). Ten articles met all inclusion criteria. The data disclosed the occurrence of double teeth in mandibular incisors. The main management of this clinical condition is either preventive or surgical involving the extraction of fused teeth, based on the deciduous nature of the teeth, the degree of caries and malocclusion development risk. An early diagnosis of dental anomalies is fundamental for the application of proper preventive strategies to avoid a potential malocclusion in permanent dentition and to maintain these teeth sound and caries-free until the eruption of the permanent dentition.

PURPOSE
To assess the validity, reliability, reproducibility, and objectivity of measurements on stone casts of patients with mixed dentitions compared to measurements on three-dimensional (3D) digital models derived from surface scans of the stone casts.
METHODS
Pairs of stone casts of 30 young patients in their mixed dentition stage were included and processed into 3D digital models using an intraoral scanner (iTero Element 2; Align Technology, San Jose, CA, USA). Then an experienced and an inexperienced examiner independently performed measurements of five defined parameters, each in triplicate, both on the digital models with analysis software (OnyxCeph3™; Image Instruments, Chemnitz, Germany) and on the original casts with a vernier calliper. Paired t-tests were used for validity and interexaminer objectivity, Pearson correlation coefficients for intermethod reliability, and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) for reproducibility testing.
RESULTS
Significant (p < 0.05) intermethod differences were identified for four parameters, but only the differences for overbite and intermolar distance exceeded the threshold of clinical relevance (≥ 0.5 mm). Intermethod reliability was high and method error invariably lower for the digital measurements and for the experienced examiner. Both examiners achieved ICCs > 0.907 with both methods. Interexaminer variation involved significant differences for all parameters but one (intermolar distance) on the stone casts and for three parameters on the digital models.
CONCLUSION
Measurements performed on digital models of mixed dentitions can yield clinically acceptable outcomes with OnyxCeph3™ software. Both the digital and the analogue measurements were highly reproducible and reliable. Objectivity of the measurements could not be confirmed, as operator experience did make a difference.
