OBJECTIVE
To examine the relationship between menthol perceptions and support for a national menthol ban.
PARTICIPANTS
Data were collected from a nationally representative probability-based panel of adults aged ≥18 years during June 21, 2016 through July 18, 2016. A total of 1,303 respondents, including an oversample of 300 African Americans, completed the survey.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES
Weighted logistic regression models examined the relationship between menthol perceptions, specifically related to health and addiction, and the outcome measure: support for a menthol ban, by menthol smoking status. All models controlled for age, sex, education level, and race/ethnicity.
RESULTS
The association between reporting accurate menthol health perceptions differed by menthol preference. Among non-menthol smokers, there was no association between accurate menthol health perceptions and support of a menthol ban while more accurate menthol perceptions of addiction were associated with greater support of a menthol ban (aOR=2.83, CI=1.19-6.72). Among menthol smokers, more accurate health-related menthol perceptions were associated with increased odds of supporting a menthol ban (aOR=3.90, CI=1.02-14.79) while more accurate menthol addiction perceptions were not.
CONCLUSIONS
Fewer current menthol smokers support a menthol ban than current non-menthol smokers given its effect on their preferred product. Given the large proportions of smokers who have misperceptions of the health consequences and addictive properties of menthol, there is a moral imperative to inform those who use these products. Findings suggest the need for tailored messaging strategies targeted to reach menthol smokers who will be most impacted by a ban, but also have the most to gain from such a policy change.

Unmyelinated tactile (C-tactile or CT) afferents are abundant in arm hairy skin and have been suggested to signal features of social affective touch. Here, we recorded from unmyelinated low-threshold mechanosensitive afferents in the peroneal and radial nerves. The most distal receptive fields were located on the proximal phalanx of the third finger for the superficial branch of the radial nerve and near the lateral malleolus for the peroneal nerve. We found that the physiological properties with regard to conduction velocity and mechanical threshold, as well as their tuning to brush velocity, were similar in CT units across the antebrachial ( = 27), radial ( = 8), and peroneal ( = 4) nerves. Moreover, we found that although CT afferents are readily found during microneurography of the arm nerves, they appear to be much more sparse in the lower leg compared with C-nociceptors. We continued to explore CT afferents with regard to their chemical sensitivity and found that they could not be activated by topical application to their receptive field of either the cooling agent menthol or the pruritogen histamine. In light of previous studies showing the combined effects that temperature and mechanical stimuli have on these neurons, these findings add to the growing body of research suggesting that CT afferents constitute a unique class of sensory afferents with highly specialized mechanisms for transducing gentle touch. Unmyelinated tactile (CT) afferents are abundant in arm hairy skin and are thought to signal features of social affective touch. We show that CTs are also present but are relatively sparse in the lower leg compared with C-nociceptors. CTs display similar physiological properties across the arm and leg nerves. Furthermore, CT afferents do not respond to the cooling agent menthol or the pruritogen histamine, and their mechanical response properties are not altered by these chemicals.

INTRODUCTION
Cigarette smoking is disproportionately common among sexual minorities. While menthol market share has increased in the past decade, research on menthol cigarette smoking among sexual minorities is scant. For this study, we examined menthol cigarette smoking in the United States, by sex and sexual identity using a nationally representative sample of adults.
AIMS AND METHODS
We pooled data from the 2015-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. We used chi-square tests and multivariable logistic regression models to examine (1) past 30-day cigarette use, (2) past 30-day menthol use, and (3) menthol preference among adults who have smoked cigarettes in the past 30 days for the following groups: heterosexual/straight males, heterosexual/straight females, gay males, gay/lesbian females, bisexual males, and bisexual females. Data were analyzed in September 2020.
RESULTS
Bivariate analyses revealed that prevalence of cigarette smoking and menthol cigarette smoking were higher among sexual minorities compared with heterosexual respondents, and that preference for menthol was highest among lesbian/gay and bisexual females who smoke. Multivariable models showed that compared with heterosexual females who smoke, odds of menthol preference were lower among heterosexual/straight and bisexual males who smoke, and higher among bisexual females.
CONCLUSIONS
Our study found that menthol preference was disproportionately high among sexual minorities who smoke-bisexual and gay/lesbian females who smoke in particular. Research is needed to understand why menthol use is common among sexual minorities who smoke.
IMPLICATIONS
Using data from a nationally representative study, this study makes a unique contribution to literature by identifying differences in menthol smoking between sexual minority subgroups. Specifically, we found that menthol smoking was highest among sexual minority females (ie, lesbian/gay and bisexual females) compared with other sexual minorities. These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions to prevent menthol cigarette initiation among sexual minorities, as well as to promote smoking cessation among sexual minorities who smoke menthol cigarettes, with an emphasis on sexual minority females. Future research should examine the impact of a potential menthol ban on these inequalities.

INTRODUCTION
Youth cigarette smoking decreased significantly over the last two decades in the United States. This study provides estimates and trends from 2011 to 2018 and factors associated with youth menthol and non-menthol smoking from 2016 to 2018.
METHODS
Using data from the 2011-2018 National Youth Tobacco Surveys, past 30-day (current) menthol and non-menthol cigarette smoking were estimated for all youth (prevalence) and youth smokers (proportions). Trends were examined using Joinpoint regression, calculating the annual percent change (APC). Multivariate logistic regression analyses identified factors associated with menthol smoking.
RESULTS
From 2011 to 2018, menthol cigarette smoking among current youth cigarette smokers significantly decreased from 57.3% to 45.7% (APC: -3.0%), while non-menthol (38.2% to 47.3% [APC: 2.9%]) and unknown menthol status (not sure\missing) (4.5% to 7.0% [APC: 7.1%]) significantly increased. Menthol cigarette smoking among high school, male, female, and non-Hispanic white current cigarette smokers decreased, but remained unchanged among middle school, non-Hispanic black, and Hispanic smokers. Significantly higher proportions of menthol cigarette smokers smoked on ≥20 days, ≥2 cigarettes per day, and ≥100 cigarettes in their lifetime compared to non-menthol smokers. Among current cigarette smokers, non-Hispanic blacks, Hispanics, flavored non-cigarette tobacco users, frequent smokers (≥20 days), those smoking 2-5 cigarettes per day, and those living with someone who uses tobacco had higher odds of menthol cigarette smoking.
CONCLUSIONS
In 2018, nearly half of current youth cigarette smokers smoked menthol cigarettes. While menthol cigarette smoking declined from 2011 to 2018 among all youth and among youth smokers, there was no change in menthol cigarette smoking among non-Hispanic black, Hispanic, and middle school cigarette smokers.
IMPLICATIONS
This study finds that overall cigarette and menthol cigarette smoking declined in youth from 2011 to 2018. However, menthol cigarette smoking among non-Hispanic black, Hispanic, and middle school youth cigarette smokers did not change. Information from this study can help inform efforts to reduce menthol cigarette smoking among US youth, particularly racial/ethnic minority populations.

and purpose: Phenazopyridine (PAP) is an over-the-counter drug widely used to provide symptomatic relief of bladder pain in conditions such as cystitis or bladder pain syndrome (BPS). Whereas the analgesic effect of PAP has been attributed to a local effect on the mucosa of the lower urinary tract (LUT), the molecular targets of PAP remain unknown. We investigated the effect of PAP on pain-related Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) channels expressed in sensory neurons that innervate the bladder wall.
EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH
The effects of PAP on the relevant TRP channels (TRPV1, TRPA1, TRPM8, TRPM3) expressed in HEK293 or CHO cells was investigated using Fura-2-based calcium measurements and whole-cell patch-clamp recordings. Activity of PAP on TRPM8 was further analysed using Fura-2-based calcium imaging on sensory neurons isolated from lumbosacral dorsal root ganglia (DRG) of mice.
KEY RESULTS
PAP rapidly and reversibly inhibits responses of TRPM8 expressed in HEK293 cells to cold and menthol, with IC values between 2 and 10 μM. It acts by shifting the voltage dependence of channel activation towards positive potentials, opposite to the effect of menthol. PAP also inhibits TRPM8-mediated, menthol-evoked calcium responses in lumbosacral DRG neurons. At a concentration of 10 μM, PAP did not significantly affect TRPA1, TRPV1, or TRPM3.
CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS
PAP inhibits TRPM8 in a concentration range consistent with PAP levels in the urine of treated patients. Since TRPM8 is expressed in bladder afferent neurons and upregulated in patients with painful bladder disorders, TRPM8 inhibition may underlie the analgesic activity of PAP.

BACKGROUND
Upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) impact all age groups and have a significant economic and social burden on society, worldwide. Most URTIs are mild and self-limiting, but due to the wide range of possible causative agents, including Rhinovirus (hRV), Adenovirus, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), Coronavirus and Influenza, there is no single and effective treatment. Over-the-counter (OTC) remedies, including traditional medicines and those containing plant derived substances, help to alleviate symptoms including inflammation, pain, fever and cough.
PURPOSE
This systematic review focuses on the role of the major plant derived substances in several OTC remedies used to treat cold symptoms, with a particular focus on the transient receptor potential (TRP) channels involved in pain and cough.
METHODS
Literature searches were done using Pubmed and Web of Science, with no date limitations, using the principles of the PRISMA statement. The search terms used were 'TRP channel AND plant compound', 'cough AND plant compound', 'cough AND TRP channels AND plant compound', 'cough AND P2X3 AND plant compound' and 'P2X3 AND plant compound' where plant compound represents menthol or camphor or eucalyptus or turpentine or thymol.
RESULTS
The literature reviewed showed that menthol activates TRPM8 and may inhibit respiratory reflexes reducing irritation and cough. Menthol has a bimodal action on TRPA1, but inhibition may have an analgesic effect. Eucalyptus also activates TRPM8 and inhibits TRPA1 whilst down regulating P2X3, aiding in the reduction of cough, pain and airway irritation. Camphor inhibits TRPA1 and the activation of TRPM8 may add to the effects of menthol. Activation of TRPV1 by camphor, may also have an analgesic effect.
CONCLUSIONS
The literature suggests that these plant derived substances have multifaceted actions and can interact with the TRP 'cough' receptors. The plant derived substances used in cough and cold medicines have the potential to target multiple symptoms experienced during a cold.

Increasing the reach of evidence-based cessation services is a longstanding public health priority, especially for subgroups who may be most at risk. Little research has examined whether quitlines are reaching menthol cigarette smokers who may have increased difficulty quitting compared with nonmenthol cigarette smokers. This study aims to understand whether quitline services are reaching menthol cigarette smokers.
METHODS
The study sample included adult smokers enrolled in Minnesota's quitline program, QUITPLAN Services, between May 2017 and April 2018 (N=10,999). Cigarette smokers were asked about the usual cigarette type (menthol versus nonmenthol). Reach ratios were calculated by dividing the percentage of program enrollees who are menthol smokers by the percentage of Minnesota smokers who are menthol smokers. Differences in demographic, tobacco use, and utilization characteristics between menthol and nonmenthol smokers were assessed using chi-square and t-tests. Analyses were conducted in March 2019.
RESULTS
Among QUITPLAN Services enrollees, 30.7% of smokers reported using menthol cigarettes. The reach ratio was 1.12 (95% CI=0.99, 1.25). Menthol smokers were more likely to be younger, be female, be Black/African American, be Hispanic, and live in an urban area than nonmenthol smokers. Although menthol smokers were more likely than nonmenthol smokers to enroll in text messaging, no other significant differences in service utilization were found.
CONCLUSIONS
The findings suggest that menthol smokers are proportionately represented among quitline enrollees. State quitlines should assess menthol smoking status at intake and allocate resources to reach and better serve menthol smokers.

Improvement of cognitive function in wild-type and Alzheimer´s disease mouse models by the immunomodulatory properties of menthol inhalation or by depletion of T regulatory cells.
A complex network of interactions exists between the olfactory, immune and central nervous systems. In this work we intend to investigate this connection through the use of an immunostimulatory odorant like menthol, analyzing its impact on the immune system and the cognitive capacity in healthy and Alzheimer's Disease Mouse Models. We first found that repeated short exposures to menthol odor enhanced the immune response against ovalbumin immunization. Menthol inhalation also improved the cognitive capacity of immunocompetent mice but not in immunodeficient NSG mice, which exhibited very poor fear-conditioning. This improvement was associated with a downregulation of IL-1β and IL-6 mRNA in the brain´s prefrontal cortex, and it was impaired by anosmia induction with methimazole. Exposure to menthol for 6 months (1 week per month) prevented the cognitive impairment observed in the APP/PS1 mouse model of Alzheimer. Besides, this improvement was also observed by the depletion or inhibition of T regulatory cells. Treg depletion also improved the cognitive capacity of the APP Alzheimer´s mouse model. In all cases, the improvement in learning capacity was associated with a downregulation of IL-1β mRNA. Blockade of the IL-1 receptor with anakinra resulted in a significant increase in cognitive capacity in healthy mice as well as in the APP/PS1 model of Alzheimer´s disease. These data suggest an association between the immunomodulatory capacity of smells and their impact on the cognitive functions of the animals, highlighting the potential of odors and immune modulators as therapeutic agents for CNS-related diseases.

Menthol is a vasoactive compound that is widely used in topical analgesic agents. Menthol induces cutaneous vasodilation, however the underlying mechanisms are unknown. Determining the rates of appearance and clearance of menthol in the skin is important for optimizing topical treatment formulation and dosing. The purpose of this study was to determine the mechanisms contributing to menthol-mediated cutaneous vasodilation and to establish a time course for menthol appearance/clearance in the skin. Ten young (23±1years, 5 males 5 females) subjects participated in two protocols. In study 1, four intradermal microdialysis fibers were perfused with increasing doses of menthol (0.1-500mM) and inhibitors for nitric oxide (NO), endothelium derived hyperpolarizing factors (EDHFs), and sensory nerves. Skin blood flow was measured with laser Doppler flowmetry and normalized to %CVC. In study 2, two intradermal microdialysis fibers were perfused with lactated Ringer's solution. 0.017mL·cm of a 4% menthol gel was placed over each fiber. 5μL samples of dialysate from the microdialysis fibers were collected every 30min and analyzed for the presence of menthol with high performance gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Skin blood flow (laser speckle contrast imaging) and subjective ratings of menthol sensation were simultaneously obtained with dialysate samples. In study 1, menthol induced cutaneous vasodilation at all doses ≥100mM (all p<0.05). However, inhibition of either NO, EDHFs, or sensory nerves fully inhibited menthol-mediated vasodilation (all p>0.05). In study 2, significant menthol was detected in dialysate 30min post menthol application (0.89ng, p=0.0002). Relative to baseline, cutaneous vasodilation was elevated from minutes 15-45 and ratings of menthol sensation were elevated from minute 5-60 post menthol application (all p<0.05). Menthol induces cutaneous vasodilation in the skin through multiple vasodilator pathways, including NO, EDHF, and sensory nerves. Topical menthol is detectable in the skin within 30min and is cleared by 60min. Skin blood flow and perceptual measures follow a similar time course as menthol appearance/clearance.

Flavorings enhance the palatability of e-cigarettes (e-cigs), with menthol remaining a popular choice among e-cig users. Menthol flavor remains one of the only flavors approved by the United States FDA for use in commercially available, pod-based e-cigs. However, the safety of inhaled menthol at the high concentrations used in e-cigs remains unclear. Here, we tested the effects of menthol on parameters of mucociliary clearance (MCC) in air-liquid interface (ALI) cultures of primary airway epithelial cells. ALI cultures treated with basolateral menthol (1 mM) showed a significant decrease in ciliary beat frequency (CBF) and airway surface liquid (ASL) volumes after 24 h. Menthol nebulized onto the surface of ALI cultures similarly reduced CBF and increased mucus concentrations, resulting in decreased rates of mucociliary transport. Nebulized menthol further increased the expression of mucin 5AC (MUC5AC) and mRNA expression of the inflammatory cytokines and . Menthol activated TRPM8, and the effects of menthol on MCC and inflammation could be blocked by a specific TRPM8 antagonist. These data provide further evidence that menthol at the concentrations used in e-cigs could cause harm to the airways.
