Bioactive compounds in berries may scavenge reactive oxygen and nitrogen species by donating electrons to free radicals, thereby protecting DNA, proteins, and lipids from oxidative damage. Evidence shows that berry consumption has beneficial health effects, though it remains unclear whether berries exert a significant impact on oxidative stress in humans. Thus, we performed a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCT) to examine the effects of non-acute (more than a single dose and ≥7 days) berry consumption on biomarkers of oxidative stress. Searches were conducted in PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Scopus; results were imported into Covidence for screening and data extraction. The literature search identified 622 studies that were screened, and 131 full-text studies assessed for eligibility. Ultimately, 28 RCTs met the eligibility criteria. Common biomarkers of oxidative stress (antioxidants, DNA damage, isoprostanes, malondialdehyde, and oxidized LDL) were systematically reviewed, and results were reported narratively. Of the approximate 56 oxidative stress biomarkers evaluated in the 28 RCTs, 32% of the biomarkers were reported to have statistically significant beneficial results and 68% of the biomarkers were reported as having no statistically significant differences. More well-designed and longer-term berry RCTs are needed to evaluate biomarkers of oxidative stress.

FAT10, a ubiquitin-like modifier protein, influences apoptosis, DNA damage response and tumor growth, with unclear effects on cancer prognosis. We reviewed expression's impact on malignancy prognosis through a systematic review and meta-analysis, including studies up to September 2023 from PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science. From 18 studies involving 2513 patients, overexpression significantly reduced overall and disease-free survival across various tumors, indicating correlations with advanced disease stage, poor differentiation, lymph node metastasis and larger tumor size. 's overexpression suggests a negative prognostic value in cancer, meriting further investigation. CRD42023431287.

PURPOSE
To investigate the impact of metabolic syndrome factors on sperm DNA fragmentation (sDF) in males from infertile couples.
METHODS
A systematic literature search was performed across ten databases for literature published from January 1, 2013 until September 13, 2023. The protocol has been registered on PROSPERO (CRD42023458359), and the literature search strategy is adhered to the PRISMA framework. Studies that evaluated sDF, as indicated by DNA fragmentation index (%DFI), in males from infertile couples in relation to metabolic syndrome factors were included. Meta-analysis, using random effects model and Bayesian framework network, was performed, and data were presented as Standardized Mean Differences (SMD) with corresponding 95 % Confidence Interval (CI).
RESULTS
Of the 2579 citations identified, eleven studies were included in this meta-analysis. The findings revealed that the %DFI was not associated with overall metabolic syndrome factors (p-tot = 0.235; SMD = 0.57 [95 %CI: -0.37, 1.52]), metabolic syndrome status (p-tot = 0.337; SMD = 0.08 [95 %CI: -0.08, 0.24), increased body mass index (p-tot = 0.237; SMD = 0.71 [95 %CI: -0.47, 1.89]), or glycaemic profile (p-tot = 0.93; SMD = 0.13 [95 %CI: -2.72, 2.98]). High levels of heterogeneity were observed (p < 0.01) in all subgroups, except for metabolic syndrome status.
CONCLUSION
The association between metabolic syndrome factors and sDF is conflicting. However, interpreting the association requires caution, as confounding factors, indicated by high heterogeneity, may conceal the outcome. Metabolic syndrome may influence other factors contributing to male infertility, highlighting the importance of promoting a healthy lifestyle.

INTRODUCTION
Although radiotherapy is one of the main cancer treatment modalities, exposing healthy organs/tissues to ionizing radiation during treatment and tumor resistance to ionizing radiation are the chief challenges of radiotherapy that can lead to different adverse effects. It was shown that the combined treatment of radiotherapy and natural bioactive compounds (such as silymarin/silibinin) can alleviate the ionizing radiation-induced adverse side effects and induce synergies between these therapeutic modalities. In the present review, the potential radiosensitization effects of silymarin/silibinin during cancer radiation exposure/radiotherapy were studied.
METHODS
According to the PRISMA guideline, a systematic search was performed for the identification of relevant studies in different electronic databases of Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus up to October 2022. We screened 843 articles in accordance with a predefined set of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Seven studies were finally included in this systematic review.
RESULTS
Compared to the control group, the cell survival/proliferation of cancer cells treated with ionizing radiation was considerably less, and silymarin/silibinin administration synergistically increased ionizing radiation-induced cytotoxicity. Furthermore, there was a decrease in the tumor volume, weight, and growth of ionizing radiation-treated mice as compared to the untreated groups, and these diminutions were predominant in those treated with radiotherapy plus silymarin/ silibinin. Furthermore, the irradiation led to a set of biochemical and histopathological changes in tumoral cells/tissues, and the ionizing radiation-induced alterations were synergized following silymarin/silibinin administration (in most cases).
CONCLUSION
In most cases, silymarin/silibinin administration could sensitize the cancer cells to ionizing radiation through an increase of free radical formation, induction of DNA damage, increase of apoptosis, inhibition of angiogenesis and metastasis, etc. However, suggesting the use of silymarin/silibinin during radiotherapeutic treatment of cancer patients requires further clinical studies.

The aim of this systematic review was to answer the question of whether crack cocaine can induce cellular and molecular alterations and whether such alterations are somehow related to clinical lesions in the oral mucosa. The searches were undertaken in three electronic databases and conducted based on the PRISMA 2020 statement. Eleven studies published between 1994 and 2020 were analyzed. The quality of the included studies was assessed by two independent reviewers (TGP and DAR) through a confounder's categorization methodology, in which final ratings were attributed (strong, moderate or weak) for each study. From 11 studies included, 7 evaluated the cellular/molecular impact of the addiction in a total of 492 individuals and compared to a control (non-exposure) group (n = 472). The main tests used for cellular alteration were MN and AgNORs. Cells from crack cocaine groups exhibited increased proliferation and MN counting. Only four studies evaluated the prevalence of oral lesions. All of them showed that individuals exposed to crack cocaine presented an increased number of oral lesions. Most studies showed good quality. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that crack use may induce changes at the cellular and molecular level and also exhibit an increased number of oral lesions. However, a correlation between such changes and oral mucosa lesions still needs further investigation and elucidation through other clinical studies in humans.

PURPOSE
Varicocele has been associated with high seminal oxidative stress (OS), impaired semen quality, and reduced male fertility potential. However, the exact mechanism(s) underlying the development of varicocele-mediated infertility and the cause-effect relationship between varicocele and testicular dysfunction are not fully understood. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis (SRMA) is to investigate the impact of varicocele on testicular OS markers and sperm parameters in experimental animals with varicocele as compared to animals without varicocele.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
A literature search was performed using the Scopus and PubMed databases on studies that investigated testicular OS markers and sperm parameters in animals with varicocele. The primary outcomes included malondialdehyde (MDA) (nmol/mg) levels whereas the secondary outcomes included total sperm count (×10), sperm vitality (%), total sperm motility (%), and sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) (%). Standardized mean difference (SMD) (95% confidence interval [CI]) was chosen to express the effect size. The quality of the included studies was evaluated using the Cambridge Quality Checklist.
RESULTS
Out of 76 identified articles, 6 studies on rats were included in the meta-analysis. The analysis showed a significant increase of MDA (SMD: 15.61 [1.93, 29.29]; p=0.03) in rats with varicocele vs. controls. We also observed a significant decrease in total sperm count (SMD: -17.45 [-28.97, -5.93]; p<0.01), sperm vitality (SMD: -16.41 [-26.30, -6.52]; p<0.01), total sperm motility (SMD: -17.67 [-24.90, -10.44]; p<0.01), and a significant increase of SDF (SMD: 7.41 [1.23, 13.59]; p=0.02), in rats with varicocele vs. controls. The quality of the included studies was ranked as high.
CONCLUSIONS
This SRMA indicates a significant increase in levels of testicular MDA and SDF and a reduction of sperm quality in experimental animals with varicocele. These findings support the potential role of testicular OS in the development of varicocele-induced testicular damage.

Infertility is a widespread global issue that affects approximately 15% of sexually active and active couples, which contributes to about 50% of cases. Currently, the condition remains prevalent and often inadequately treated. This systematic review aims to evaluate existing studies investigating the effects of probiotic supplementation in men. A comprehensive search was conducted across major databases, including PubMed, Cochrane, Science Direct, and Scielo, using relevant keywords such as 'probiotic' OR 'Lactobacillus' OR 'Bifidobacterium' AND 'Male infertility' OR 'male fertility' OR 'sperm quality' OR 'sperm motility' OR 'oligoasthenoteratozoospermia' and their Portuguese equivalents. Four randomized clinical studies met the inclusion criteria, focusing on men diagnosed with idiopathic male infertility (oligozoospermia, teratozoospermia, and asthenozoospermia). The findings revealed that probiotic administration exhibited promising antioxidant properties by combating reactive oxygen species (ROS), consequently protecting sperm DNA from damage that correlates with declining sperm quality. Significant improvements were observed across all sperm parameters, with notable enhancement in motility. Consequently, probiotic supplementation emerges as a potential therapeutic alternative for men diagnosed with idiopathic infertility, demonstrating positive effects on sperm quality.

BACKGROUND
BRAT1 (BRCA1-associated ataxia telangiectasia mutated activator 1) is involved in many important biological processes, including DNA damage response and maintenance of mitochondrial homeostasis. Dysfunctional BRAT1 causes variable clinical phenotypes, which hinders BRAT1-related disease from recognition and diagnosis.
METHODS
Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement was the guideline for this systematic review. MEDLINE was searched by terms ("BAAT1" and "BRAT1") from inception until June 21, 2022.
RESULTS
Twenty-eight studies, screened out of 49 records, were included for data extraction. The data from fifty patients with mutated BRAT1 were collected. There are 3 high relevant phenotypes, 4 medium relevant phenotypes and 3 low relevant phenotypes. Eye-related abnormal features were most frequently reported: 27 abnormal features were observed. Thirty-nine kinds of pathogenic nucleotide change in BRAT1 were reported. Top three common mutations of BRAT1 were c.638_639insA (16 cases), c.1395G > A (5 cases) and c.294dupA (4 cases). Homozygous mutations in BRAT1 presented a more severe phenotype than those who are compound heterozygotes.
CONCLUSIONS
This is the first comprehensive systematic review to present quantitative data about clinical characteristics of BRAT1-related disease, which helps doctors to recognize and diagnose it easier.

The liver plays a critical role in metabolic processes, making it vulnerable to injury. Researchers often study carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced hepatotoxicity in model organisms because it closely resembles human liver damage. This toxicity occurs due to the activation of various cytochromes, including CYP2E1, CYP2B1, CYP2B2, and possibly CYP3A, which produce the trichloromethyl radical (CCl3*). CCl3* can attach to biological molecules such as lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids, impairing lipid metabolism and leading to fatty degeneration. It can also combine with DNA to initiate hepatic carcinogenesis. When exposed to oxygen, CCl3* generates more reactive CCl3OO*, which leads to lipid peroxidation and membrane damage. At the molecular level, CCl4 induces the release of several inflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α and NO, which can either help or harm hepatotoxicity through cellular apoptosis. TGF-β contributes to fibrogenesis, while IL-6 and IL-10 aid in recovery by minimizing anti-apoptotic activity and directing cells toward regeneration. To prevent liver damage, different interventions can be employed, such as antioxidants, mitogenic agents, and the maintenance of calcium sequestration. Drugs that prevent CCl4- induced cytotoxicity and proliferation or enhance CYP450 activity may offer a protective response against hepatic carcinoma.

PURPOSE
The existence of cancer stem cells (CSCs) is closely related to tumor recurrence, metastasis, and resistance to chemoradiotherapy. In addition, given the unique physical and biological advantages of charged particle, we hypothesized that charged particle irradiation would produce strong killing effects on CSCs. The purpose of our systematic review is to evaluate the biological effects of CSCs irradiated by charged particle, including proliferation, invasion, migration, and changes in the molecular level.
METHODS
We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science until 17 march 2022 according to the key words. Included studies have to be vitro studies of CSCs irradiated by charged particle. Outcomes included one or more of radiation sensitivity, proliferation, metastasis, invasion, and molecular level changes, like DNA damage after been irradiated.
RESULTS
Eighteen studies were included in the final analysis. The 18 articles include 12-carbon ion irradiation, 4-proton irradiation, 1 α-particle irradiation, 1-carbon ion combine proton irradiation.
CONCLUSION
Through the extraction and analysis of data, we came to this conclusion: CSCs have obvious radio-resistance compared with non-CSCs, and charged particle irradiation or in combination with drugs could overcome this resistance, specifically manifested in inhibiting CSCs' proliferation, invasion, migration, and causing more and harder to repair DNA double-stranded breaks (DSB) of CSCs.
