Meta-Analysis Review
BACKGROUND
Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic autosomal neurocutaneous syndrome correlated with skeletal dysplasia and defects in the osseous microarchitecture. The physiological mechanism for the development of NF1-related bone abnormal turnover is still unclear.
OBJECTIVES
A meta-analysis was performed to investigate the effects of NF1 on bone mineral density (BMD) and osseous metabolic indices in order to provide clinical evidence for the pathogenesis of the associated skeletal deformities.
METHODS
A systematic literature review search was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines in the PubMed/Medline and Web of Science databases from the date of inception of each database through to 10 September 2023. Specific inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied for the identification of studies examining the effects of NF1 on bone strength and metabolism. The Newcastle-Ottawa and Jadad scales were applied to assess the quality of the included studies. RevMan 5.3 software was used for the analysis of the data, and MedCalc was applied to examine publication bias.
RESULTS
Overall, 13 studies met the inclusion criteria comprised of 5 cross-sectional, 6 case-control and 2 retrospective studies. 703 patients and 973 healthy subjects formed the NF1 and control group, respectively. The results of the meta-analysis displayed that lumbar (SMD = -3.85, 95%CI = -7.53 to -0.18, Z = 2.05, p = 0.04) and femoral (SMD = -4.78, 95%CI = -8.86 to -0.69, Z = 2.29, p = 0.02) BMD was reduced in the NF1 group. Both in children and adults the serum levels of 25 hydroxyvitamin D3 were also decreased in NF1 group, but without any statistical significance (SMD = -0.62, 95%CI = -1.34 to -0.11, Z = 1.66, p = 0.10). Serum Parathyroid hormone (PTH) (SMD = 0.73, 95%CI = 0.31 to 1.15, Z = 3.43, p = 0.0006) and C-telopeptide of type 1 collagen (CTX) (SMD = 0.82, 95%CI = 0.33 to 1.30, Z = 3.29, p = 0.001) were elevated in NF1 patients, while serum calcium (SMD = -0.10, 95%CI = -0.74 to 0.53, Z = 0.32, p = 0.75) phosphorous (SMD = 0.33, 95%CI = -0.38 to 1.05, Z = 0.92, p = 0.36), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) (SMD = -0.36, 95%CI = -0.77 to 0.05, Z = 1.71, p = 0.09), osteocalcin (SMD = 1.81, 95%CI = -0.37 to -3.98, Z = 1.63, p = 0.10) and bone formation markers (SMD = 0.28, 95%CI = -0.37 to -0.94, Z = 0.85, p = 0.39) were not.
CONCLUSION
NF1 is associated with decreased BMD at the lumbar spine and femur. Taking into account that the serum levels of PTH, CTX were increased whereas the concentrations of vitamin D, calcium, phosphorous, ALP, osteocalcin and bone formation markers were not altered significantly in the NF1 patients compared with the healthy subjects, a vitamin D independent dysregulated bone cellular activity could be considered.

Review
Demodex blepharitis is marked by an excessive presence of Demodex mites on the eyelids, particularly in the lash follicles. While these microscopic mites are a natural component of the skin microbiota, their overabundance can lead to ocular complications. Symptoms associated with Demodex blepharitis include eyelid itching, inflammation, and ocular irritation. Our objective is to investigate Lotilaner as a potential treatment for Demodex blepharitis, assessing both the safety and efficacy of the ophthalmic formula in managing this disease. We conducted research in Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Scopus up to November 2023. The quality of studies was evaluated using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool, and it was employed to evaluate the quality of evidence. Our meta-analysis was executed using Review Manager 5.4. We evaluated the safety and efficacy of Lotilaner ophthalmic solution with a concentration of 0.25%. The following outcomes were assessed: clinically meaningful reduction in collarette, collarette cure, composite cure, drop comfort, erythema cure, mite density, and mite eradication. In the case of dichotomous data, we used the risk ratio (RR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). In our analysis, all included studies, comprising a total of 891 participants, consistently reported clinically meaningful reductions in collarettes. The findings were statistically significant, with Lotilaner demonstrating a substantially higher reduction compared to the vehicle group (RR = 3.09, 95% CI [2.65-3.60]; -value < 0.0001). Notably, results for Drop Comfort outcomes were nonsignificant, indicating no discernible differences compared to the group that used the vehicle (RR = 1.03, 95% CI [0.98-1.07]; -value = 0.26). However, both mite density and mite eradication outcomes exhibited significant improvements with Lotilaner in comparison to the vehicle (RR = 2.58, 95% CI [2.25-2.95]; -value < 0.0001) and (RR = 3.80, 95% CI [2.88-5.01]; -value < 0.0001). The Lotilaner ophthalmic solution at 0.25% showed superior efficacy over the vehicle in reducing collarettes, achieving complete mite eradication within six weeks, and significantly decreasing erythema in Demodex blepharitis. It demonstrated safety with no reported side effects compared to the vehicle. Direct comparative studies with alternative treatments are recommended for a comprehensive assessment of efficacy and safety.

Review
BACKGROUND
Infertility affects 186 million people worldwide, with male factors contributing to 50% of infertility cases. Semen analysis is a key for diagnosing male factor infertility, but sperm parameters can be influenced by ejaculatory abstinence (EA) duration. Shortening or prolonging EA can impact on semen quality and assisted reproductive technology (ART) outcomes, but the optimal EA duration remains unclear, particularly for infertility patients.
OBJECTIVES
This study conducts a comprehensive meta-analysis to explore the impact of varying abstinence durations on semen quality and fertility outcomes.
METHODS
Three English database (PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials) as well as four Chinese database (China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Scientific Journals database, WanFang database, and Chinese Biomedical Literature database) were searched from 2000 to August 2023. The classical meta-analysis and "one-stage" dose-response meta-analysis were conducted to compare the associations of different abstinence durations (short-term abstinence vs. long-term abstinence) on semen quality in healthy adult and different type of infertile patients.
RESULTS
There were 85 eligible studies were finally included. The meta-analysis of volume (mean difference [MD] = -0.95 mL, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -1.16 to -0.74 mL), total sperm count (TSC) (MD = -102.45×10 , 95% CI: -117.98×10 to -86.91×10 ), sperm concentration (SC) (MD = -11.88×10 /mL, 95% CI: -18.96×10 /mL to -4.80×10 /mL), DNA fragmentation index (DFI) (MD = -2.37%, 95% CI: -4.73% to -0.01%) in healthy men showed a significant decrease with different abstinence durations (short-term abstinence vs. long-term abstinence). The meta-analysis of infertile men showed significant decrease in volume in various subgroups (MD range: -0.73 to -1.17 mL) with P < 0.01; TSC (MD = -61.93×10 , 95% CI: -88.84×10 to -35.01×10 ), SC (MD = -5.39×10 /mL, 95% CI: -9.97×10 to -0.81×10 /mL), DFI (MD = -5.63%, 95% CI: -10.19% to -1.06%) in unexplained infertility subgroup; significant increase in viability (MD = 6.14%, 95% CI: 3.61% to 8.68%) in the unexplained infertility subgroup. The dose-response meta-analysis showed that TSC in oligozoospermia showed a nonlinear increase (coefficient from 3.38 to -5.76, P from 0.02 to 0.22) and the truncation point was around the 4th to 5th abstinence day. The percentage of progressive motile sperm (PR) in asthenozoospermia showed a significant decrease (coefficient = -2.39, 95% CI: -4.28 to -0.50). For fertility outcomes of different ARTs, only the clinical pregnancy rate (CPR) in the intrauterine insemination (IUI) subgroup showed a significant decrease around the 3rd day (coefficient = 0.85, 95% CI: 0.75 to 0.97).
CONCLUSIONS
Short-term abstinence may be associated with limited improvements in semen quality in healthy men but could be more beneficial for infertile men, especially within the first 4 days of abstinence. Caution is urged in making definitive conclusions about the causal relationship between abstinence time and semen quality changes due to potential confounding and interactions.

Meta-Analysis Review
The relationship between anthocyanin intake and obesity-related inflammatory markers remains unclear in existing research. To investigate this, we hypothesized that anthocyanin supplementation could reduce plasma concentrations of inflammatory markers, including C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, and other cytokines in obesity. We conducted a systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, SinoMed, and other related literature and identified 16 randomized controlled trials that met our inclusion criteria. Our findings showed that anthocyanin intake was significantly associated with a reduction in vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 mean plasma concentrations (-53.56 ng/mL; 95% confidence interval [CI], -82.10 to -25.03). We also observed a modest decrease in CRP (-0.27 ng/mL; 95% CI, -0.58 to 0.05), TNF-α (-0.20 ng/mL; 95% CI, -0.54 to 0.15), and IL-6 (-0.53 ng/mL; 95% CI, -1.16 to 0.10) mean plasma concentrations. Subgroup analysis revealed that anthocyanin intake tended to decrease CRP and IL-6 concentrations in overweight or dyslipidemic individuals. Additionally, the intervention duration subgroup analysis showed that anthocyanin supplementation had a stronger effect on plasma IL-6 and TNF-α in participants after 8 to 12 weeks of intervention. In conclusion, our meta-analysis indicated that anthocyanin supplementation can effectively reduce obesity-related inflammatory markers associated with chronic low-grade inflammation.

Aging & Mental Health 2023This study aimed to summarize the available evidence on music intervention alleviating depression or anxiety in dementia. (Meta-Analysis)
Meta-Analysis Review
BACKGROUND
This study aimed to summarize the available evidence on music intervention alleviating depression or anxiety in dementia.
METHODS
A comprehensive literature search was performed to analyze the effects of music intervention on depression or anxiety. Subgroups were created to explore the effect of intervention period, duration, and frequency on efficacy. The effect size was reported as a mean standardized difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI).
RESULTS
The analysis included 19 articles involving 614 samples. Thirteen studies for relieving depression revealed that, with an increase in intervention period, the efficacy decreased and then increased, whereas with an increase of intervention duration, the effect became better. A weekly intervention is ideal. Seven studies verifying the impact on anxiety relief revealed that the effect of intervention within 12 wk is significant; with an increase of intervention duration, the effect became better. A weekly intervention is ideal. Collaborative analysis showed that long low-frequency interventions are more efficient than short high-frequency interventions.
CONCLUSIONS
Music intervention can relieve depression or anxiety in people living with dementia. Weekly short interventions of more than 45 min are effective for emotional regulation. Future research should concentrate on severe dementia and follow-up impact.

Meta-Analysis Review
Observational studies suggest that the potential role of magnesium remains controversial in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). This meta-analysis aims to consolidate the available information from observational studies that have focused on the relationship between magnesium levels and GDM. A systematic and comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CNKI, and Wanfang databases. Data were extracted independently by two investigators. Standardized mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to summarize the circulating magnesium levels (CI). This meta-analysis included a total of 17 studies involving 2858 participants including 1404 GDM cases and 1454 healthy controls, which showed that magnesium levels were significantly lower in GDM compared to healthy controls (SMD: - 0.35; 95% CI: - 0.62, - 0.07, P = 0.013). Likewise, the same phenomenon was observed in the third trimester (SMD = - 1.07; 95% CI: - 1.84 to - 0.29, P = 0.007). Other subgroup analyses revealed that this trend of decreasing magnesium concentration was only observed in Europeans (SMD = - 0.64; 95% CI: - 0.90, - 0.38, P < 0.0001). This meta-analysis revealed that serum magnesium levels were lower in patients with GDM than in healthy pregnant women, and this discrepancy was most pronounced in European populations and during the third trimester. Nevertheless, current evidence suggests that circulating magnesium deficiency is associated with gestational diabetes; the challenge for the future is to further elucidate the possible benefits of preventing gestational diabetes through magnesium supplementation.

Meta-Analysis Review
The present study aimed to assess the effect of propolis supplementation on oxidative status, a key contributor to the etiology of many chronic diseases. A systematic search of multiple databases, including Web of Science, SCOPUS, Embase, PubMed, and Google Scholar, was conducted from inception to October 2022 to identify articles examining the effect of propolis on glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. The quality of the included studies was evaluated using the Cochrane Collaboration tool. A total of nine studies were included in the final analysis, and a random-effects model was used to pool the estimated effects. Results showed that propolis supplementation significantly increased the levels of GSH (SMD = 3.16; 95% CI: 1.15, 5.18; I = 97.2%), GPX (SMD = 0.56; 95% CI: 0.07, 1.05; p = 0.025; I = 62.3%), and TAC (SMD = 3.26; 95% CI: 0.89, 5.62; I = 97.8%, p < 0.001). However, the effect of propolis on SOD was not significant (SMD = 0.05; 95% CI: -0.25, 0.34; I = 0.0%). Although the MDA concentration was not significantly decreased overall (SMD = -0.85, 95% CI: -1.70, 0.09; I = 93.3%), a significant decrease in MDA levels was observed at doses ≥1000 mg/day (SMD = -1.90; 95% CI: -2.97, -0.82; I = 86.4) and supplementation durations of less than 11 weeks (SMD = -1.56; 95% CI: -2.60, -0.51; I = 90.4). These results suggest that propolis is a safe supplement with a beneficial effect on GSH, GPX, and TAC levels and may be an effective adjunctive therapy for diseases where oxidative stress is a key factor in the etiology. However, further high-quality studies are necessary to make more precise and comprehensive recommendations given the limited number of studies, clinical diversity, and other limitations.

Limosilactobacillus reuteri consumption significantly reduces the total cholesterol concentration without affecting other cardiovascular disease risk factors in adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
As one of the most significant probiotics, Limosilactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) has been exploited as a nutritional supplement. We hypothesized that L. reuteri consumption might improve the significant risk factors of cardiovascular disease, including blood pressure, blood lipid, and blood glucose. However, previous clinical studies have shown controversial results. This study aims to explore the effect of L. reuteri consumption on these risk factors. PubMed, Embase, Scopus, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were searched for eligible randomized controlled trials published before May 2022. A total of 6 studies with 4 different L. reuteri strains and including 512 participants were included. The results showed that L. reuteri consumption significantly reduced total cholesterol (TC) by -0.26 mmol/L compared with the control group. In contrast, it did not affect systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), or triglycerides. Subgroup analysis showed a significant reduction in TC when participants were <55 years old, had a body mass index between 25 and 30, or had hypercholesterolemia. In addition, TC decreased significantly when L. reuteri supplementation was >5 × 10 colony-forming unit or the length of the intervention was <12 weeks. Strain subgroup analysis showed that L. reuteri NCIMB 30242 significantly reduced TC and LDL-C. In conclusion, L. reuteri consumption has a significant TC-lowering effect, which can effectively reduce the risks of cardiovascular disease associated with hypercholesterolemia. However, the results do not support the effectiveness of L. reuteri consumption on other metabolic outcomes. Further examination of larger sample sizes is needed to confirm these findings.

Review
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
Periodontitis is a chronic disease affecting the supporting tissues of the teeth and exhibits bidirectional relation with systemic diseases. This study aims to determine the association between chronic periodontitis and erythrocyte functional measures: total red blood cells (RBCs), hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) by systematic review and meta-analysis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
A systematic search of the electronic databases PUBMED, OVID, Embase, Web on Science, and Google Scholar was undertaken from inception to July 2022. English language studies that evaluated the erythrocyte functional measures in periodontitis and health were selected. Other review reports, letters/opinion articles, studies without a definition of periodontitis, and the concomitant presence of systemic conditions (diabetes, kidney disease, cancer) were excluded. Two reviewers determined full-text eligibility in a blinded process. Meta-Essentials software was used to generate forest plots and to determine heterogeneity and publication bias.
RESULTS
Twenty-six studies involving 1082 patients with chronic periodontitis and 980 healthy controls were analyzed. Pooled results showed lower Hb concentration (Hedges' = -1.16; 95% confidence intervals [CI], -1.7 to -0.62), RBC counts (Hedges' = -0.85; 95% CI, -1.31 to -0.38) and packed cell volume (-0.56; 95% CI, -1.02 to -0.11) in patients with chronic periodontitis.
CONCLUSION
This meta-analysis showed a decreasing trend in the hematological parameters, including hemoglobin concentration, number of erythrocytes, and hematocrit in patients with chronic periodontitis compared to healthy controls.

Meta-Analysis Review
BACKGROUND
Clonorchis sinensis, one of the most important food-borne zoonotic trematodes, remains prevalent in China. Understanding its infection status in animals is crucial for controlling human clonorchiasis. Here we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to focus on the spatio-temporal disparities of C. sinensis infection in animals in China.
METHODS
Data on C. sinensis prevalence in snails, the second intermediate hosts, or animal reservoirs in China were extracted from electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Chinese Wanfang database, CNKI, VIP, and China Biomedical Literature database. A random-effects meta-analysis model was utilized to estimate the pooled prevalence in each of the above animal hosts. Subgroup analysis and multivariable meta-regression were performed to explore potential sources of heterogeneity across studies and compare the temporal disparity of infection rates between high and low epidemic areas. Scatter plots were used to depict the biogeographical characteristics of regions reporting C. sinensis infection in animals.
RESULTS
The overall pooled prevalence of C. sinensis was 0.9% (95% CI: 0.6-1.2%) in snails, 14.2% (12.7-15.7%) in the second intermediate host, and 14.3% (11.4-17.6%) in animal reservoirs. Prevalence in low epidemic areas (with human prevalence < 1%) decreased from 0.6% (0.2-1.2%) before 1990 to 0.0% (0.0-3.6%) after 2010 in snails (P = 0.0499), from 20.3% (15.6-25.3%) to 8.8% (5.6-12.6%) in the second intermediate hosts (P = 0.0002), and from 18.3% (12.7-24.7%) to 4.7% (1.0-10.4%) in animal reservoirs. However, no similar decrease in prevalence was observed in high epidemic areas (with human prevalence ≥ 1.0%). C. sinensis infections were predominantly reported in areas with altitudes below 2346 m and annual cumulative precipitation above 345 mm and were mostly concentrated in eastern China.
CONCLUSIONS
There are spatio-temporal disparities in the animal infections of C. sinensis in different areas of China. Animal infections are primarily concentrated in regions with low altitude and high precipitation. The results suggest that implementing One Health-based comprehensive measures targeting both humans and animals, especially in high epidemic areas, is essential for successful eradication of C. sinensis in China.
