Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) is a reliable, non-invasive, objective, and cost-effective body composition assessment method, with high reproducibility. This scoping review aims to evaluate the current scientific and clinical evidence on BIA for body composition assessment in oncology patients, under active treatment. Literature search was conducted through MEDLINE, CINAHL, Scopus and Web of Science databases, following PRISMA-ScR Guidelines. Inclusion criteria comprised studies reporting the use of BIA for body composition evaluation in adults with cancer diagnosis. Studies including non-cancer pathology or only assessing nutritional status were excluded. This scoping review comprised a total of 36 studies: 25 were original studies including 18 prospective studies, six cross-sectional studies and one retrospective study and 11 were systematic reviews. Population size for the included original articles ranged from 18 to 1217 participants, comprising a total of 3015 patients with cancer with a mean baseline Body Mass Index (BMI) ranging from 20.3 to 30.0 kg/m and mean age ranging between 47 and 70 years. Review articles included a total of 273 studies, with a total of 78,350 participants. The current review considered studies reporting patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) ( = 8), breast cancer (BC) ( = 4), esophageal cancer (EC) ( = 2), liver cancer ( = 2), pancreatic cancer (PC) ( = 3), gastric cancer (GC) ( = 3), colorectal cancer (CRC) ( = 8), lung cancer (LC) ( = 1), skin cancer (SK) ( = 1) and multiple cancer types ( = 6). BIA is a suitable and valid method for the assessment of body composition in oncology. BIA-derived measures have shown good potential and relevant clinical value in preoperative risk evaluation, in the reduction of postoperative complications and hospital stay and as an important prognostic indicator in persons with cancer. Future research on the diagnostic value and clinical applications of BIA and BIA-derived phase angle (PhA) should be conducted in order to predict its impact on patient survival and other clinical outcomes.

Primary vitreoretinal lymphoma is a potentially aggressive intraocular malignancy with poor systemic prognosis and sometimes significant diagnostic delays as it may masquerade as chronic uveitis. Despite the variety of diagnostic techniques, it is unclear which modality is most accurate in the diagnosis of PVRL. A systematic literature search was conducted on Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Controlled Register of Trials for studies published between January, 2000, and June, 2023. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reporting on the following diagnostic tools used to diagnose patients with PVRL were included: cytology, flow cytometry, MYD88 L265P mutation, CD79B mutation, interleukin 10/interleukin-6 (IL-10/IL-6) ratio, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for monoclonal immunoglobulin heavy chain (IgH) and immunoglobulin kappa light chain (IgK) rearrangements, and imaging findings. The aggregated sensitivity of each diagnostic modality was reported and compared using the chi-squared (χ2) test. A total of 662 eyes from 29 retrospective studies reporting on patients diagnosed with PVRL were included. An IL-10/IL-6 ratio greater than 1 had the highest sensitivity (89.39%, n = 278/311 eyes, n = 16 studies) for PVRL, where the sensitivity was not significantly different when only vitreous samples were drawn (88.89%, n = 232/261 eyes, n = 13 studies) compared to aqueous samples (83.33%, n = 20/24, n = 2) (p = 0.42). Flow cytometry of vitreous samples gave a positive result in 66/75 eyes (88.00%, n = 6 studies) with PVRL, and monoclonal IgH rearrangements on PCR gave a positive result in 354/416 eyes (85.10%, n = 20 studies) with PVRL. MYD88 L265P and CD79B mutation analysis performed poorly, yielding a positive result in 63/90 eyes (70.00%, n = 8 studies) with PVRL, and 20/57 eyes (35.09%, n = 4 studies) with PVRL, respectively. Overall, our systematic review found that an IL-10/IL-6 ratio greater or equal to one may provide the highest sensitivity in identifying patients with PVRL. Future studies are needed to employ multiple diagnostic tools to aid in the detection of PVRL and to further establish nuanced guidelines when determining the optimal diagnostic tool to use in diverse patient populations.

Dementia is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that burdens the person living with the disease, their families, and medical and social services. Timely diagnosis of dementia could be followed by introducing interventions that may slow down its progression or reduce its burdens. However, the diagnostic process of dementia is often complex and resource intensive. Access to diagnostic services is also an issue in low and middle-income countries. The abundance and easy accessibility of speech and language data have created new possibilities for utilizing Deep Learning (DL) technologies to be part of the dementia diagnostic process. This systematic review included studies published between 2012-2022 that utilized such technologies to aid in diagnosing dementia. We identified 72 studies using the PRISMA 2020 protocol, extracted and analyzed data from these studies and reported the related DL technologies. We found these technologies effectively differentiated between healthy individuals and those with a dementia diagnosis, highlighting their potential in the diagnosis of dementia. This systematic review provides insights into the contributions of DL-based speech and language techniques to support the dementia diagnostic process. It also offers an understanding of the advancements made in this field thus far and highlights some challenges that still need to be addressed.

Traumatic events increase risk of mental illnesses, but childhood neglect prevalence in psychiatric disorders is understudied. This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed neglect prevalence, including emotional neglect (EN) and physical neglect (PN), among adults with psychiatric disorders. We conducted a systematic search and meta-analysis in 122 studies assessing different psychiatric disorders. Prevalence was 46.6% (95%CI[34.5-59.0]) for unspecified neglect (Ne), 43.1% (95%CI[39.0-47.4]) for EN, and 34.8% (95%CI[30.6-39.2]) for PN. Although a moderating effect of the psychiatric diagnostic category was not confirmed, some clinical diagnoses had significantly lower prevalence rates than others. Patients with bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder showed lower prevalence rates of EN and PN, whereas lower prevalence was found in psychotic disorders and eating disorders for PN only. Neglect assessment was a significant moderator for Ne and PN. No moderating effect of age and sex on neglect prevalence was found. Heterogeneity levels within and between psychiatric diagnostic categories remained high. This is the first meta-analysis examining diverse types of neglect prevalence considering different psychiatric diagnoses. Our results explore the prevalence of childhood neglect and its subtypes among adults with psychiatric disorders, contributing to understanding the nuanced interplay between neglect and specific psychiatric conditions, and guiding interventions for affected individuals.

Sleep disordered breathing is extremely common in pregnancy and is a risk factor for maternal complications. Animal models demonstrate that intermittent hypoxia causes abnormal fetal growth. However, there are conflicting data on the association between maternal sleep disordered breathing and offspring growth in humans. We investigated this association by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis. Sixty-three manuscripts, and total study population of 67, 671, 110 pregnant women were included. Thirty-one studies used subjective methods to define sleep disordered breathing, 24 applied objective methods and eight used international codes. Using a random effects model, habitual snoring, defined by subjective methods, and obstructive sleep apnea, diagnosed by objective methods, were associated with an increased risk for large for gestational age (OR 1.46; 95%CI 1.02-2.09 and OR 2.19; 95%CI 1.63-2.95, respectively), while obstructive sleep apnea, identified by international codes, was associated with an increased risk for small for gestational age newborns (OR 1.28; 95%CI 1.02-1.60). Our results support that maternal sleep disordered breathing is associated with offspring growth, with differences related to the type of disorder and diagnostic methods used. Future studies should investigate underlying mechanisms and whether treatment of sleep disordered breathing ameliorates the neonatal growth.

Histoplasmosis is a mycosis due to a dimorphic fungus Histoplasma capsulatum. This study aimed at providing an overview of histoplasmosis epidemiological, clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects from the last 30 years. This review was carried out using a systematic literature search on histoplasmosis from 1992 to 2021. We describe the clinical features, diagnostic methods and treatment. Empirical searches were conducted via the databases PubMed, Google Scholar and Science Direct. Between 1992 and 2021, 190 manuscripts were published and reported 212 cases of histoplasmosis. These publications included 115 and 97 cases of American and African histoplasmosis respectively. The number of publications increased over the last ten years with a maximum in 2020 (12.34 % of the cases reported). The disseminated forms of histoplasmosis were the most frequently reported cases as compared to the localized forms. This was the case with the American histoplasmosis (75.65 %) as well as with the African histoplasmosis (55.67 %). Itraconazole (31.17 %) and Amphotericin B (26.62 %) were the most used drugs in the management of these cases. American histoplasmosis is distributed worldwide whereas African histoplasmosis is mainly present in intertropical Africa. There is a critical need for setting up a global surveillance system, towards a better understanding of the disease.

There is a knowledge gap in the literature regarding oral health disparities (OHD) in minority and indigenous (IG) paediatric cohorts that needs to be addressed. Disparities in oral health among children are a pressing concern, highlighting inequities in access to dental care and meeting needs. The current systematic review aims to provide a comprehensive synthesis of the prevailing understanding of OHD in the minority and IG strata. A meticulous search strategy was formulated by a team of reviewers to identify pertinent studies from databases of PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus, Google Scholar and EMBASE. Data extraction and article selection strictly adhered to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was employed to evaluate the methodological quality of the studies included. Review Manager version 5.4 was used to synthesise quantitative data. A total of five cross-sectional studies were included in the final analysis. The findings consistently demonstrated the existence of racial and socioeconomic disparities in oral health across varying age groups and geographical locations in the defined population. Significant disparities in oral health outcomes were observed between IG and non-IG populations, with IG and minority groups exhibiting a heightened vulnerability to oral health challenges. Through a meta-analysis of the compiled data, a statistically significant association was established between children (being a member of a minority group) and unmet oral health needs. Socioeconomic status (SES) and maternal education were factors that showed a significant impact on oral health disparity. All studies were graded to be of the low-risk category based on the NOS risk of bias tool. This review successfully identified several influential factors contributing to oral health disparities, such as cultural practices, dietary patterns and access to oral healthcare services. Additionally, discernible differences in oral health status were evident between IG and non-IG children, with IG children enduring a greater burden of oral health difficulties. These findings underscore the imperative for targeted interventions and policy measures aimed at addressing the specific oral health needs of minority and IG paediatric populations, with the overarching goal of mitigating the existing disparities.

OBJECTIVE
To estimate the prevalence of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in infants with a systematic review and meta-analysis.
METHOD
A literature search was conducted in April 2023, using databases such as Cochrane Library, PubMed, MEDLINE, CNKI, and SinoMed, without language restrictions. Eligible studies included cross-sectional studies reporting the prevalence of DDH among infants aged 0-12 months. Two independent reviewers manually selected and coded the studies, with any disagreements resolved by a third reviewer. Meta-analysis was performed using a random-effects model to calculate the prevalence of DDH. Regression analysis examined the trend of DDH prevalence, and stratification analysis explored heterogeneity between studies.
RESULTS
A total of 65 studies involving 3 451 682 infants were included in the meta-analysis. None of the studies were classified as high quality, four were medium-to-high quality, 50 were low-to-medium quality, and eight were low quality. The pooled prevalence of DDH was 1.40% (95% CI: 0.86 to 2.28, I=100%), and prevalence of dysplasia, subluxation, and dislocation was 1.45% (95% CI: 0.93 to 2.24, I=97%), 0.37% (95% CI: 0.22 to 0.60, I=94%), and 0.21% (95% CI: 0.13 to 0.34, I=92%), respectively. Notably, the overall prevalence has a slight upward trend in the last three decades (β=0.24, p=0.35), but the dysplasia was downward trend (β=-0.48, p<0.01). Girls have higher risk of DDH than boys (1.46% vs 0.66%; Q=5.83, df=1, p=0.02). There were no significant differences based on gender, country, setting, or screening technique.
CONCLUSION
The prevalence of DDH among infants is approximately one in a 100, with girls being at higher risk. Though the prevalence of dysplasia has decreased, there is a slight upward trend in overall DDH. Therefore, routine screening for DDH in infants is recommended to prevent more serious developmental problems.

OBJECTIVES
As an increasing number of studies apply artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in osteoarthritis (OA) detection, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to pool the data on diagnostic performance metrics of AI, and to compare them with clinicians' performance.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
A search in PubMed and Scopus was performed to find studies published up to April 2022 that evaluated and/or validated an AI algorithm for the detection or classification of OA. We performed a meta-analysis to pool the data on the metrics of diagnostic performance. Subgroup analysis based on the involved joint and meta-regression based on multiple parameters were performed to find potential sources of heterogeneity. The risk of bias was assessed using Prediction Model Study Risk of Bias Assessment Tool reporting guidelines.
RESULTS
Of the 61 studies included, 27 studies with 91 contingency tables provided sufficient data to enter the meta-analysis. The pooled sensitivities for AI algorithms and clinicians on internal validation test sets were 88% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 86,91) and 80% (95% CI: 68,88) and pooled specificities were 81% (95% CI: 75,85) and 79% (95% CI: 80,85), respectively. At external validation, the pooled sensitivity and specificity for AI algorithms were 94% (95% CI: 90,97) and 91% (95% CI: 77,97), respectively.
CONCLUSION
Although the results of this meta-analysis should be interpreted with caution due to the potential pitfalls in the included studies, the promising role of AI as a diagnostic adjunct to radiologists is indisputable.
