The purpose of the current study was to systematically identify and evaluate existing patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) for clinical glaucoma practice.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE
Understanding and incorporating patient preferences into decision-making is now recognized as critical for optimal resource allocation, especially in technologically advancing areas, such as minimally invasive surgeries. Patient-reported outcome measures are instruments designed to evaluate the health outcomes that are most important to patients. Despite their recognized importance, especially in the era of patient-centered care, their routine use in clinical settings remains low.
METHODS
A systematic literature search was conducted in 6 databases (EMBASE, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Scopus, BIOSIS, and Web of Science) from the date of inception. Studies were included in the qualitative review if they reported measurement properties of PROMs in adult patients with glaucoma. COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments guidelines were used to assess the included PROMs. The study protocol is registered with PROSPERO (registration number: CRD42020176064).
RESULTS
The literature search yielded 2661 records. After deduplication, 1259 studies entered level 1 screening, and based on title and abstract review, 164 records proceeded to full-text screening. In 48 included studies, 70 instrument reports discuss 43 distinct instruments in 3 major categories: glaucoma-specific, vision-specific, and general health-related quality of life. Most used measures were glaucoma-specific (Glaucoma Quality of Life [GQL] and Glaucoma Symptom Scale [GSS]) and vision-specific (National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire [NEI VFQ-25]). All 3 have sufficient validity (especially construct), with GQL and GSS having sufficient internal consistency, cross-cultural validity, and reliability, with reports suggesting high methodological quality.
CONCLUSION
The GQL, GSS, and NEI VFQ-25 are the 3 most used questionnaires in a research setting, having considerable validation in a patient population with glaucoma. Limited reports on interpretability, responsiveness, and feasibility in all 43 identified instruments make identifying a single optimal questionnaire for clinical use challenging and highlight the need for further studies.

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of global blindness and is expected to co-occur more frequently with vascular morbidities in the upcoming years, as both are aging-related diseases. Yet, the pathogenesis of glaucoma is not entirely elucidated and the interplay between intraocular pressure, arterial blood pressure (BP) and ocular perfusion pressure is poorly understood.
OBJECTIVES
This systematic review aims to provide clinicians with the latest literature regarding the management of arterial BP in glaucoma patients.
METHODS
A systematic search was performed in Medline, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library. Articles written in English assessing the influence of arterial BP and systemic antihypertensive treatment of glaucoma and its management were eligible for inclusion. Additional studies were identified by revising references included in selected articles.
RESULTS
80 Articles were included in this systemic review. A bimodal relation between BP and glaucoma progression was found. Both high and low BP increase the risk of glaucoma. Glaucoma progression was, possibly via ocular perfusion pressure variation, strongly associated with nocturnal dipping and high variability in the BP over 24 h.
CONCLUSIONS
We concluded that systemic BP level associates with glaucomatous damage and provided recommendations for the management and study of arterial BP in glaucoma. Prospective clinical trials are needed to further support these recommendations.

BACKGROUND
A macula-involving rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is one of the most common ophthalmic surgical emergencies and causes significant visual morbidity. Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with gas tamponade is often performed to repair primary macula-involving RRDs with a high rate of anatomical retinal reattachment. It has been advocated by some ophthalmologists that face-down positioning after PPV and gas tamponade helps reduce postoperative retinal displacement. Retinal displacement can cause metamorphopsia and binocular diplopia.
OBJECTIVES
The primary objective of this review is to determine whether face-down positioning reduces the risk of retinal displacement following PPV and gas tamponade for primary macula-involving RRDs.
SEARCH METHODS
We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (which contains the Cochrane Eyes and Vision Trials Register) (2022, Issue 11), MEDLINE (January 1946 to 28 November 2022), Embase.com (January 1947 to 28 November 2022), PubMed (1948 to 28 November 2022), Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature database (1982 to 28 November 2022), ClinicalTrials.gov, and the World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform. We did not use any date or language restrictions in the electronic search. We last searched the electronic databases on 28 November 2022.
SELECTION CRITERIA
We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in which face-down positioning was compared with no positioning or another form of positioning following PPV and gas tamponade for primary macula-involving RRDs.
DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
We used standard Cochrane methodology and assessed the certainty of the body of evidence for the prespecified outcomes using the GRADE approach.
MAIN RESULTS
We identified three RCTs (369 eyes of 368 participants) that met the eligibility criteria. Two RCTs provided data on postoperative retinal displacement, one reported on postoperative distortion and quality of life outcomes, two on postoperative best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in logMAR, and two on postoperative ocular adverse events such as outer retinal folds. Study characteristics and risk of bias All the trials involved predominantly male participants (range: 68% to 72%). Only one trial provided race and ethnicity information, was registered on a trial registry, and reported funding sources. Using the RoB 2 tool, we assessed the risk of bias for proportion of eyes with retinal displacement, mean change in visual acuity, objective distortion scores, quality of life assessments, and ocular adverse events, with most domains judged to be at low risk of bias. Findings Immediate face-down positioning may result in a lower proportion of participants with postoperative retinal displacement compared with support-the-break positioning at six months (risk ratio [RR] 0.73, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.54 to 0.99; 1 RCT; 239 eyes of 239 participants; very low certainty evidence). One study found no evidence of a difference in BCVA at three months when comparing postoperative face-up with face-down positioning with or without perfluorocarbon liquid (mean difference [MD] -0.03, 95% CI -0.09 to 0.02; I = 0; 56 eyes of 56 participants; very low certainty evidence). Immediate face-down positioning appears to have little to no effect on postoperative distortion scores at week 26 (MD 1.80, 95% CI -1.92 to 5.52; 1 RCT; 219 eyes of 219 participants; very low certainty evidence) and postoperative quality of life assessment scores at week 26 (MD -1.80, 95% CI -5.52 to 1.92; 1 RCT; 217 eyes of 217 participants; very low certainty evidence). Adverse events One study that enrolled 262 participants with macula-involving RRDs suggested that immediate face-down positioning after PPV and gas tamponade may reduce the ocular adverse event of postoperative outer retinal folds at six months (RR 0.39, 95% CI 0.17 to 0.90; 1 RCT; 262 eyes of 262 participants; very low certainty evidence) and binocular diplopia (RR 0.20, 95% CI 0.04 to 0.90; 1 RCT; 262 eyes of 262 participants; very low certainty evidence) compared with support-the-break positioning. Immediate face-down positioning may increase the ocular adverse event of elevated intraocular pressure compared with support-the-break positioning (RR 1.74, 95% CI 1.11 to 2.73; 1 RCT; 262 eyes of 262 participants; very low certainty evidence). Another study found no evidence of a difference in postoperative outer retinal folds when comparing face-down versus face-up positioning at one and three months (RR 1.00, 95% CI 0.50 to 2.02; RR 1.00, 95% CI 0.28 to 3.61; 1 RCT; 56 eyes of 56 participants; very low certainty evidence). No studies reported non-ocular adverse events.
AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS
Very low certainty evidence suggests that immediate face-down positioning after PPV and gas tamponade may result in a reduction in postoperative retinal displacement, outer retinal folds, and binocular diplopia, but may increase the chance of postoperative raised intraocular pressure compared with support-the-break positioning at six months. We identified two ongoing trials that compare face-down positioning with face-up positioning following PPV and gas tamponade in participants with primary macula-involving RRDs, whose results may provide relevant evidence for our stated objectives. Future trials should be rigorously designed, and investigators should analyze outcome data appropriately and report adequate information to provide evidence of high certainty. Quality of life and patient preferences should be examined in addition to clinical and adverse event outcomes.

OBJECTIVE
This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to analyse the effect of excess body weight on intraocular pressure (IOP) values.
METHOD AND ANALYSIS
A literature search from PubMed, Medline and ScienceDirect Databases on 18 May 2023 was conducted by three reviewers, then filtered each study based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. For the quality assessment of included studies, the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was adapted. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan V.5.4 by entering the IOP values of each group to measure the mean difference.
RESULTS
From 2656 studies, there were 9 studies that matched the criteria and then were included to perform a quantitative meta-analysis. The results showed a mean difference of 0.93 (95% CI: 0.67 to 1.18) of the excessive weight group against the normal weight group. This suggests that there is a significant relationship between excess body weight and increasing values of IOP.
CONCLUSION
It can be concluded that excessive body weight tends to lead to higher IOP, which means that high IOP becomes a major risk factor for glaucoma.

Myopia and glaucoma are two common ocular diseases that pose significant health and economic burdens to patients, their families, and society. In recent years, the relationship between these two conditions has become a prominent research focus. This article provides a systematic review of the current research progress on the association between myopia and glaucoma, with a primary emphasis on discussing the two major viewpoints: myopia as a risk factor for glaucoma development and the multifaceted impact of myopia on glaucoma progression. Possible mechanisms and potential clinical biomarkers are outlined, and the academic community's complementary insights and doubts regarding these viewpoints are summarized. Additionally, unresolved issues in existing studies are identified to pave the way for future scientific explorations, aiming to further elucidate the relationship between myopia and glaucoma and optimize the clinical diagnosis and management of glaucoma.

Efficacy and Safety of Different Types of Intraocular Pressure-Lowering Surgeries in Patients with Primary Angle Closure (PAC) or PAC Glaucoma: Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials.
OBJECTIVE
To compare the intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering effect of different types of surgery available in the literature using a network meta-analysis (NMA) based on a systematic review.
METHODS
PubMed and the Cochrane database were searched. Randomized clinical trials involving surgical interventions for high IOP for PAC (primary angle closure) or PACG (primary angle closure glaucoma) were included. Descriptive statistics and outcomes were extracted. Bayesian NMA was performed to compare the IOP-lowering effect and the change in the number of antiglaucoma drugs required between baseline and endpoint, as well as success rates.
RESULTS
This NMA included 21 articles with 1237 eyes with PAC or PACG. Interventions were characterised as phacoemulsification (phaco), trabeculectomy, goniosynechialysis (GSL) with viscoelastic or blunt device, goniosurgery (GS) (trabeculotomy or goniotomy), micro-bypass stent (Istent®), endocyclophotocoagulation (ECPL) or various combinations of these procedures. Phaco+GSL [-1.73 (95%CrI: -3.53 to -0.13)] and phaco+GSL+GS [-3.92 (95%CrI: -6.91 to -1.31)] provided better IOP lowering effects than phaco alone. Phaco+trabeculectomy [-3.11 (95%CrI: -5.82 to -0.44)] was inferior to phaco+GSL+GS. Phaco+trabeculectomy [-0.45 (95%CrI: -0.81 to -0.13)] provided a better outcome in terms of reducing the need for antiglaucoma drug compared to phaco alone. There were no differences between the other surgeries in terms of reduction of antiglaucoma drug number and IOP lowering effect. Success rates were similar for all surgical procedures.
CONCLUSIONS
Phaco+GSL+GS showed the most promising results for lowering IOP. Phaco+trabeculectomy resulted in a significant reduction in the number of antiglaucoma drugs compared to phaco alone.

INTRODUCTION
Anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION) can mimic glaucoma and consequently cause difficulties in differential diagnosis. The purpose of this paper was to summarize differences in diagnostic tests that can help perform a correct diagnosis.
METHODS
The search strategy was performed according to the PRISMA 2009 guidelines, and four databases were used: MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane. Totally, 772 references were eligible; 39 were included after screening with respect to inclusion criteria that included English language and published in the 20 years before search date.
RESULTS
Ninety percent (n = 35) of included studies used optical coherence tomography (OCT). Glaucomatous eyes had a significantly greater cup area, volume and depth, cup-to-disk ratio, a lower rim volume and area, and a thinner Bruch's membrane opening-minimum rim width. Retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thinning in glaucomatous eyes occurred primarily at the superotemporal, inferotemporal, and inferonasal sectors, while AION eyes demonstrated mostly superonasal thinning. Glaucoma eyes showed greater macular ganglion cell layer thickness, except at the inferotemporal sector. OCT angiography measurements demonstrated a significant decrease in superficial and deep macular vessel density (VD) in glaucoma compared to AION with similar degree of visual field damage; the parapapillary choroidal VD was spared in AION eyes compared to glaucomatous eyes.
CONCLUSION
By use of OCT imaging, optic nerve head parameters seem most informative to distinguish between glaucoma and AION. Although both diseases affect the RNFL thickness, it seems to do so in different sectors. Differences in structure and vascularity of the macula can also help in making the differential diagnosis.

This systematic review has revealed that variable definitions of glaucoma continue to be used in prevalence studies, despite the introduction of the International Society of Geographic and Epidemiologic Ophthalmology (ISGEO) criteria.
PURPOSE
To systematically review diagnostic criteria and examinations performed in glaucoma prevalence studies over time and determine the quality of reporting. Accurate estimates of glaucoma prevalence are crucial to inform resource allocation. However, diagnosis of glaucoma comprises inherently subjective examinations and the cross-sectional nature of prevalence studies precludes monitoring for progression.
METHODS
A systematic review of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus was performed to examine diagnostic protocols used by glaucoma prevalence studies and evaluate uptake of the ISGEO criteria, introduced in 2002 to standardize glaucoma diagnosis in prevalence studies. Detection bias and compliance with the Strengthening Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) guidelines were evaluated.
RESULTS
Ten thousand five hundred forty-four articles were identified. After deduplication, 5589 articles were screened, yielding 136 articles pertaining to 123 studies. An absence of data in many countries was identified. Ninety-two percent of studies stated diagnostic criteria, and 62% used the ISGEO criteria since their publication. Weaknesses of the ISGEO criteria were identified. Temporal variations in the performance of various examinations were observed, including heterogeneity in angle assessment. Mean STROBE compliance was 82% (range 59-100%); 72 articles had a low risk of detection bias, 4 had a high risk, and 60 had some concerns.
CONCLUSION
Heterogeneous diagnostic definitions persist in glaucoma prevalence studies, despite introduction of the ISGEO criteria. Standardization of criteria remains imperative and the development of new criteria represent a valuable opportunity to achieve this goal. In addition, methods of determining diagnoses are poorly reported, suggesting a need for improvement in study conduct and reporting. Accordingly, we propose the Reporting of quality Of GlaUcoma Epidemiological Studies (ROGUES) Checklist. We have also identified a need for further prevalence studies in regions with limited data and to update Australian angle closure glaucoma prevalence. Design and reporting of future studies can be informed by this review's insights into diagnostic protocols previously used.

OBJECTIVE
Glaucoma is a chronic disease with an insidious onset that often brings severe psychological burden to patients. Therefore, based on a systematic review and meta-analysis, we explore the prevalence and severity of depression and anxiety in glaucoma patients, and provide clinically valuable information for medical staff.
METHODS
Computer searches were conducted for relevant studies in PubMed, Embase, ProQuest PsycINFO, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Database, and China VIP Database. The search date range was from the establishment of the database to December 2023. Literature was screened and data were extracted. The Cochrane risk of bias assessment tool was used to evaluate the quality of the literature, and RevMan5.4 was used for meta-analysis.
RESULTS
The total sample size of the 15 included studies was 24,334 cases. All included studies were of high quality. The results of the meta-analysis revealed that, compared with control patients without glaucoma, patients with glaucoma were more likely to experience depression and to have more severe depressive symptoms [RR (Relative Risk) = 5.92, 95% CI (Confidence Interva) (3.29, 10.66), p < 0.01]; they were also more likely to experience anxiety and to have more severe anxiety symptoms [RR = 2.99, 95% CI (1.93, 4.64), p < 0.01]. The results of the sensitivity analysis showed that the two studies by Cumurcu E. 2005 and Yochim 2012 were the sources of heterogeneity in the meta-analysis of depression; and the three studies by Mabuchi 2012, Otori 2017, and Yochim 2012 were the sources of heterogeneity in the meta-analysis of anxiety disorders.
CONCLUSION
People with glaucoma are more likely to experience depression and anxiety than people without glaucoma. Medical staff should pay greater attention to patients' emotional problems and help patients improve their quality of life.

PURPOSE
To synthesize the outcome measures used by randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for childhood glaucoma.
METHODS
MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Scopus were searched from inception to February 17, 2023. Randomized controlled trials and observational studies related to childhood glaucoma were included. Primary and secondary outcomes were extracted and the data was used to generate a literature review.
RESULTS
This review identified 42 unique reports pertaining to childhood glaucomas. Most of the studies originated from Egypt, India, and the USA. Intraocular pressure (IOP) outcomes were the most frequent outcomes studied, followed by clinical outcomes and safety outcomes. Clinical outcomes were the most common secondary outcomes studied, followed by IOP outcomes and safety outcomes.
CONCLUSIONS
This systematic review found heterogenous outcomes with IOP outcomes as the most studied primary outcome. As the remaining outcomes were not consistently utilized, this review highlights the need for a consensus on studies of pediatric glaucoma.
