BACKGROUND
Osteoporosis and obesity are closely related, and the relationships between different types of obesity and osteoporosis are inconsistent.
OBJECTIVE
Our objective was to summarize earlier data concerning the association between osteoporosis and obesity (general and central), and to compare the impacts of these two obesity indicators on osteoporosis.
METHODS
From inception to May 2021, a comprehensive search in electronic bibliographic databases was conducted, and the search was updated in December 2021, July 2022 and June 2023. The data were independently extracted and evaluated by two investigators from epidemiological studies that reported the impact of obesity on the odds of incident osteoporosis.
RESULTS
There were 24 studies included in the final analysis when it came to general obesity measured by body mass index (BMI). Individuals with overweight and obesity had decreased odds of osteoporosis (odds ratio (OR), 0.451, 95% confidence intervals (CIs): 0.366-0.557). Sensitivity analyses showed that both overweight and obesity were decreased odds of osteoporosis, with reductions of 48.6% and 70.1%, respectively (OR, 0.514, 95% CI: 0.407-0.649; OR, 0.299, 95% CI: 0.207-0.433). Conversely, individuals classified as underweight were found to have higher odds of osteoporosis (OR, 2.540, 95% CI: 1.483-4.350). In term of central obesity, the final analysis consisted of 7 studies. No significant association was observed between central obesity and osteoporosis (OR, 0.913, 95% CI: 0.761-1.096).
CONCLUSIONS
General overweight and obesity were associated with lower odds of developing osteoporosis, whereas underweight was associated with higher odds. However, central obesity did not show a significant association with osteoporosis. These findings underscore the importance of considering the impact of obesity on osteoporosis. Further research is necessary to reinforce the evidence and validate our findings.

OBJECTIVES
The relationship between perihematomal edema (PHE) and intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) outcomes is uncertain. Given newly published studies, we updated a previous systematic review and meta-analysis assessing the prognostic impact of PHE on ICH outcomes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Databases were searched through September 2022 using pre-defined keywords. Included studies used regression to examine the association between PHE and functional outcome (assessed by modified Rankin Scale [mRS]) and mortality. The study quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The overall pooled effect, and secondary analyses exploring different subgroups were obtained by entering the log transformed odds ratios and their confidence intervals into a DerSimonian-Laird random effects meta-analysis.
RESULTS
Twenty-eight studies (n=8655) were included. The pooled effect size for overall outcome (mRS and mortality) was 1.05 (95% CI 1.03, 1.07; p<0.00). In secondary analyses, PHE volume and growth effect sizes were 1.03 (CI 1.01, 1.05) and 1.12 (CI 1.06, 1.19), respectively. Results of subgroup analyses assessing absolute PHE volume and growth at different time points were: baseline volume 1.02 (CI 0.98, 1.06), 72-hour volume 1.07 (CI 0.99, 1.16), growth at 24 hours 1.30 (CI 0.96, 1.74) and growth at 72 hours 1.10 (CI 1.04, 1.17). Heterogeneity across studies was substantial.
CONCLUSIONS
This meta-analysis indicates that PHE growth, especially within the first 24 hours after ictus, has a stronger impact on functional outcome and mortality than PHE volume. Definitive conclusions are limited by the large variability of PHE measures, heterogeneity, and different evaluation time points between studies.

BACKGROUND/AIMS
Previous studies have shown that hyperferritinemia is a common phenomenon in non-alcoholic fatty liver dis- ease patients. We aim to further explore the relationship between serum ferritin levels and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease using a meta-analysis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Four Library databases were electronically searched from inception until December 2021 to find prospective cohort or case-control studies examining the relationship between serum ferritin levels and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and all kinds of literature were screened according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The odds ratio and other related data were extracted, and a meta-analysis was performed.
RESULTS
Eleven studies examining the relationship between serum ferritin levels and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease were included. The serum ferritin levels in the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease group were significantly higher than those without non-alcoholic fatty liver disease group (1.54 ng/mL, 95% CI: 0.85-2.23, P < .001). Serum ferritin levels were significantly associated with the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in both men and women (odds ratio = 2.36, 95% CI: 1.41-3.93, P = .001 and odds ratio = 2.93, 95% CI: 1.83-4.69, P < .001, respectively), and after adjusting for the parameters, the relationships were still shown to be significant in men and women (odds ratio = 2.24, 95% CI: 1.64-3.05, P < .001 and odds ratio = 3.30, 95% CI: 2.13-5.11, P < .001, respectively).
CONCLUSION
Serum ferritin levels were higher in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease than in those without non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and were associated with the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in both men and women.

INTRODUCTION
There are an increasing number of reports of autoantibodies (AAbs) against host proteins such as G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) and the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in COVID-19 disease. Here we have undertaken a systematic review and meta-analysis of all reports of AAbs against GPCRs and RAS in COVID-19 patients including those with long-COVID or post-COVID symptoms.
METHODS
PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were searched to find papers on the role of GPCR and RAS AAbs in the presence and severity of COVID-19 or post- COVID symptoms available through March 21, 2023. Data on the prevalence of AngII or ACE, comparing AngII or ACE between COVID-19 and non-COVID-19, or comparing AngII or ACE between COVID-19 patients with different disease stages were pooled and a meta-analysed using random- or fixed-effects models were undertaken.
RESULTS
The search yielded a total of 1042 articles, of which 68 studies were included in this systematic review and nine in the meta-analysis. Among 18 studies that investigated GPCRs and COVID-19 severity, 18 distinct AAbs were detected. In addition, nine AAbs were found in case reports that assessed post- COVID, and 19 AAbs were found in other studies that assessed post- COVID or long- COVID symptoms. Meta-analysis revealed a significantly higher number of seropositive ACE2 AAbs in COVID-19 patients (odds ratio = 7.766 [2.056, 29.208], p = 0.002) and particularly in severe disease (odds ratio = 11.49 [1.04, 126.86], p = 0.046), whereas AngII-AAbs seropositivity was no different between COVID-19 and control subjects (odds ratio = 2.890 [0.546-15.283], p = 0.21).
CONCLUSIONS
GPCR and RAS AAbs may play an important role in COVID-19 severity, the development of disease progression, long-term symptoms COVID and post- COVID symptoms.

Available results on the association between the Mediterranean diet (MD) and gastric cancer (GC) incidence are controversial. The present study aimed to determine the correlation between different subtypes of GC and MD adherence. This meta-analysis was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42021284432). We searched Embase, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science from inception through 22 April 2023 to retrieve relevant studies. A random-effects model was used to pool odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Eleven studies were included in the meta-analysis. Pooled analyses revealed that adherence to the MD was inversely associated with GC risk (OR, 0.43; 95% CI, 0.29 to 0.63; OR, 0.84; 95% CI, 0.77 to 0.92). Higher MD adherence was significantly associated with a reduced GC risk in male (OR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.65 to 0.93; OR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.65 to 1.01), but not in female (OR, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.68 to 1.01; OR, 1.04; 95% CI, 0.82 to 1.31). Furthermore, adherence to the MD possibly decreased the risk of gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (GCA) (OR, 0.64; 95% CI, 0.49 to 0.83; OR, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.76 to 1.02) and gastric non-cardia adenocarcinoma (GNCA) (OR, 0.68; 95% CI, 0.59 to 0.79; OR, 0.85; 95% CI, 0.78 to 0.94). Our results indicate that adherence to the MD reduces the risk of GC and its subtypes.

OBJECTIVE
To investigate the associations between adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and physical activity (PA).
DATA SOURCES
MEDLINE, EMBASE, AMED, SPORTDiscus, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL electronic databases were searched from inception to August 2022/plus citation tracking.
STUDY SELECTION
Observational studies of participants with radiographically confirmed AIS with ≥10° lateral spinal curvature (Cobb method) and comparator groups without AIS that measured PA were selected by 2 reviewers.
DATA EXTRACTION
Data were extracted independently and cross-checked by 2 reviewers. Risk of bias was evaluated using Newcastle Ottawa Scales and overall confidence in the evidence using the GRADE approach.
DATA SYNTHESIS
Sixteen studies with 9627 participants (9162, 95% women) were included. A history of vigorous PA significantly reduced the odds of being newly diagnosed with AIS by 24% (odds ratio [OR] 0.76, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.65-0.89) (high certainty). Moderate PA reduced odds by 13% (moderate certainty) and light PA increased odds by 9% (low certainty), but neither analysis was statistically significant. Ballet or gymnastics (OR 1.47, 95% CI 3.08 (1.90, 5.00) were the only individual sports significantly associated with AIS diagnosis (moderate certainty). Case-control studies of people with and without AIS provided greater evidence that having AIS reduces vigorous PA and sports participation, and less evidence light PA and walking are affected.
CONCLUSION
Adolescents who participate in more vigorous PA are less likely to be diagnosed with AIS. Ballet and gymnastics are associated with AIS diagnosis, but the direction of this association is uncertain. People with AIS are likely to do less vigorous physical and sporting activity compared with those without AIS, which could negatively affect health and quality of life. Further research is warranted into the inter-relations between PA and AIS, studies need to be of sufficient size, include men, and evaluate vigorous including higher-impact PA compared with moderate or light PA.

OBJECTIVE
This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to conduct a thorough and contemporary assessment of maternal and neonatal outcomes associated with water birth in comparison with land-based birth.
DATA SOURCES
We conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, and gray literature sources, from inception to February 28, 2023.
STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
We included randomized and nonrandomized studies that assessed maternal and neonatal outcomes in patients who delivered either conventionally or while submerged in water.
METHODS
Pooled unadjusted odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were calculated using a random-effects model (restricted maximum likelihood method). We assessed the 95% prediction intervals to estimate the likely range of future study results. To evaluate the robustness of the results, we calculated fragility indices. Maternal infection was designated as the primary outcome, whereas postpartum hemorrhage, perineal lacerations, obstetrical anal sphincter injury, umbilical cord avulsion, low Apgar scores, neonatal aspiration requiring resuscitation, neonatal infection, neonatal mortality within 30 days of birth, and neonatal intensive care unit admission were considered secondary outcomes.
RESULTS
Of the 20,642 articles identified, 52 were included in the meta-analyses. Based on data from observational studies, water birth was not associated with increased probability of maternal infection compared with land birth (10 articles, 113,395 pregnancies; odds ratio, 0.93; 95% confidence interval, 0.76-1.14). Patients undergoing water birth had decreased odds of postpartum hemorrhage (21 articles, 149,732 pregnancies; odds ratio, 0.80; 95% confidence interval, 0.68-0.94). Neonates delivered while submerged in water had increased odds of cord avulsion (10 articles, 91,504 pregnancies; odds ratio, 1.75; 95% confidence interval, 1.38-2.24) and decreased odds of low Apgar scores (21 articles, 165,917 pregnancies; odds ratio, 0.69; 95% confidence interval, 0.58-0.82), neonatal infection (15 articles, 53,635 pregnancies; odds ratio, 0.64; 95% confidence interval, 0.42-0.97), neonatal aspiration requiring resuscitation (19 articles, 181,001 pregnancies; odds ratio, 0.60; 95% confidence interval, 0.43-0.84), and neonatal intensive care unit admission (30 articles, 287,698 pregnancies; odds ratio, 0.56; 95% confidence interval, 0.45-0.70).
CONCLUSION
When compared with land birth, water birth does not appear to increase the risk of most maternal and neonatal complications. Like any other delivery method, water birth has its unique considerations and potential risks, which health care providers and expectant parents should evaluate thoroughly. However, with proper precautions in place, water birth can be a reasonable choice for mothers and newborns, in facilities equipped to conduct water births safely.

This meta-analysis aimed to explore the potential relationship between senile sarcopenia and hypertension in older people. A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library, up to November 2022. Ten studies comprising 14 804 participants were enrolled. The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) was pooled to evaluate the correlation between sarcopenia and hypertension in older people utilizing a random-effects model. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were then carried out to explore the potential sources of heterogeneity. The results revealed a substantial correlation between sarcopenia and hypertension among older people (OR = 1.39, 95% CI: 1.15-1.67, p < .01). Further subgroup analysis revealed an association between sarcopenic obesity and hypertension (OR = 1.49, 95% CI: 1.37-1.62, p < .01). In conclusions, our findings highlighted a significant relationship between sarcopenia and hypertension among older people, with sarcopenic obesity amplifying this risk.

OBJECTIVE
Accelerated female reproductive events represent the early onset of reproductive events involving puberty, menarche, pregnancy loss, first sexual intercourse, first birth, parity, and menopause. This study aimed to explore the association between childhood adversity and accelerated female reproductive events.
DATA SOURCES
PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase were systematically searched from September 22, 2022 to September 23, 2022.
STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Observational cohort, cross-sectional, and case-control studies in human populations were included if they reported the time of reproductive events for female individuals with experience of childhood adversity and were published in English.
METHODS
Two reviewers independently screened studies, obtained data, and assessed study quality, and conflicts were resolved by a third reviewer. Dichotomous outcomes were evaluated using meta-analysis, and pooled odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were generated using random-effects models. Moderation analysis and meta-regression were used to investigate heterogeneity.
RESULTS
In total, 21 cohort studies, 9 cross-sectional studies, and 3 case-control studies were identified. Overall, female individuals with childhood adversity were nearly 2 times more likely to report accelerated reproductive events than those with no adversity exposure (odds ratio, 1.91; 95% confidence interval, 1.33-2.76; I=99.6%; P<.001). Moderation analysis indicated that effect sizes for the types of childhood adversity ranged from an odds ratio of 1.61 (95% confidence interval, 1.23-2.09) for low socioeconomic status to 2.13 (95% confidence interval, 1.14-3.99) for dysfunctional family dynamics. Among the 7 groups based on different reproductive events, including early onset of puberty, early menarche, early sexual initiation, teenage childbirth, preterm birth, pregnancy loss, and early menopause, early sexual initiation had a nonsignificant correlation with childhood adversity (odds ratio, 2.70; 95% confidence interval, 0.88-8.30; I=99.9%; P<.001). Considerable heterogeneity (I>75%) between estimates was observed for over half of the outcomes. Age, study type, and method of data collection could explain 35.9% of the variance.
CONCLUSION
The literature tentatively corroborates that female individuals who reported adverse events in childhood are more likely to experience accelerated reproductive events. This association is especially strong for exposure to abuse and dysfunctional family dynamics. However, the heterogeneity among studies was high, requiring caution in interpreting the findings and highlighting the need for further evaluation of the types and timing of childhood events that influence accelerated female reproductive events.

INTRODUCTION
Of the problems in tuberculosis (TB) control program is the recurrence of this disease. In some studies, smoking has been reported as the most important risk factor. Therefore, the present study aimed at examining the association between smoking and tuberculosis recurrence using meta-analysis.
METHODS
To report the findings of this meta-analysis, we used PRISMA. The protocol of this study has been recorded in PROSPERO. The research question has been formulated based on PICO, and the search was performed using both MeSH and non-MeSH keywords. After screening and selecting the articles and evaluating their quality using the NOS checklist, the overall estimate of the odds ratio of tuberculosis recurrence in smokers was assessed with a 95% confidence interval.
RESULTS
Fourteen studies met the inclusion criteria. The total number of samples in the group of patients with tuberculosis recurrence was 1988 with 855 (43%) smokers, and in the group of patients affected by tuberculosis without recurrence, it was 27,226 with 7503 (27.56%) smokers. In 13 studies, the odds ratio of tuberculosis recurrence was higher in smokers; this difference was statistically significant in 12 of them. Combining the results of these 14 studies, the odds ratio of tuberculosis recurrence in smokers was 2.10 times higher, using the random effects model (95% CI:1.69, 2.61).
CONCLUSION
Based on the results of study present, smoking increases the risk of tuberculosis recurrence. Therefore, to eradicate tuberculosis by 2030, more serious interventions should be taken to quit smoking, which in turn reduces the incidence of tuberculosis.
