OBJECTIVES
The main purpose of this study was to evaluate whether large granular bovine bone can be as effective as small granular bovine bone in maxillary sinus floor elevation.
METHODS
A comprehensive online search of eligible articles was conducted using PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science, and a systematic review and meta-analysis was performed from establishment to February, 2023. The outcome indicators were the percentage of connective tissue, the percentage of newly formed bone and the percentage of residual xenograft respectively. The meta-analysis was conducted by using the Stata 15.1 (Stata Conpernarn, USA) and Review Manager software5.4.1.
RESULTS
After careful screening and review, a total of 4 studies were included for systematic review and meta-analysis. The data were extracted to compare the histological performance of bovine bones with different particle sizes after maxillary sinus elevation. No significant differences were found in the percentage of connective tissue, the percentage of newly formed bone, and the percentage of residual xenograft.
CONCLUSION
In this study, a systematically review of the previous literature showed that similar histological results were obtained for both large-particle bovine bone and small-particle bovine bone. Therefore, the large granular bovine bone and the small granular bovine bone were equally effective in maxillary sinus elevation. It is difficult to make conclusion from limited evidence from four studies. More clinical evidence was needed.

This systematic review evaluated the effects of nano-sized cement particles on the properties of calcium silicate-based cements (CSCs). Using defined keywords, a literature search was conducted to identify studies that investigated properties of nano-calcium silicate-based cements (NCSCs). A total of 17 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Results indicated that NCSC formulations have favourable physical (setting time, pH and solubility), mechanical (push out bond strength, compressive strength and indentation hardness) and biological (bone regeneration and foreign body reaction) properties compared with commonly used CSCs. However, the characterization and verification for the nano-particle size of NCSCs were deficient in some studies. Furthermore, the nanosizing was not limited to the cement particles and a number of additives were present. In conclusion, the evidence available for the properties of CSC particles in the nano-range is deficient-such properties could be a result of additives which may have enhanced the properties of the material.

BACKGROUND
Pancreatic cancer (PC) continues to rank as one of the deadliest forms of cancer, with the majority of patients being diagnosed with unresectable disease. The implementation of cryoablation-based comprehensive treatment is expected to lead to a reduction in tumor size and potentially achieve complete resection. However, the availability of systematic and evidence-based treatment guidelines for cryoablation in pancreatic cancer is currently limited.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
A computerized search was conducted in the Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library databases, and Clinicaltrials to retrieve studies published from August 1987 to June 2023. The perioperative outcomes and long-term survival of patients with locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC) or metastatic pancreatic cancer (mPC) who underwent cryosurgery were systematically collected. Heterogeneity was assessed using the Cochran's Q test, and a funnel plot was implemented to evaluate publication bias. Data were pooled and analyzed using Stata 14.0 software. The Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Form tool was employed for quality evaluation.
RESULTS
9 studies including 368 patients were identified. The pooled overall incidence rate was 4% (95%CI: 0-14%; I²=54.06%) for acute pancreatitis, 0% (95%CI: 0-0%; I²=0.0%) for delayed gastric emptying, 0% (95%CI: 0-1%; I²=0.0%) for postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) or bile leakage, 2% (95%CI:0-5%; I²=0.0%) for bleeding, and 4% (95%CI: 0-12%; I²=70.46%) for fever. Our subgroup analysis revealed that the percutaneous treatment group had a lower incidence of complications compared to laparotomy, but had higher incidences of POPF, bleeding, and pancreatitis than the intraoperative group. Median overall survival (OS) varied from 5 to 16.2 months. The median survival rates at 6, 12, 24, and 36 months for patients who underwent cryosurgery were as follows: 94.9%, 64.8% (range: 4.8%-63.1%), 22.80%, and 9.5%, respectively.
CONCLUSION
With the advancements in cryoablation and anti-tumor therapy, cryoablation emerges as a promising treatment modality for patients with unresectable pancreatic cancer. According to existing literature, the combination of cryoablation with radioactive particle implantation or immunotherapy has demonstrated considerable efficacy and safety. However, while the majority of included data is derived from retrospective studies, it is imperative to conduct larger sample sizes or prospective trials for further validation.

The extensive application of amorphous silica nanoparticles (aSiNPs) in recent years has resulted in unavoidable human exposure in daily life, thus raising widespread concerns regarding the safety of aSiNPs on human health. The particle size is one of the important characteristics of nanomaterials that could influence their toxicity. For the reason that particles with smaller sizes possess larger surface area, which may lead to higher surface activity and biological reactivity. However, due to the complexity of experimental conditions and biological systems, the relationship between the particle size and the toxic effect of aSiNPs remains unclear. Therefore, this systematic review aims to investigate how particle size influences the toxic effect of aSiNPs in vivo and to analyze the relevant experimental factors affecting the size-dependent toxicity of aSiNPs in vivo. We found that 83.8% of 35 papers included in the present review came to the conclusion that smaller-sized aSiNPs exhibited stronger toxicity, though a few papers (6 papers) put forward different opinions. The reasons for smaller aSiNPs manifested greater toxicity were summarized. In addition, certain important experimental factors could influence the size-dependent effects and in vivo toxicity of aSiNPs, such as the synthesis method of aSiNPs, disperse medium of aSiNPs, administration route of aSiNPs, species or strain of experimental animals, sex of experimental animals, aggregation/agglomeration and protein corona of aSiNPs.

(1) Background: Radiotherapy (RT) is a central component for the treatment of many head and neck cancers. In this systematic review of the literature, we aimed to characterize and quantify the published evidence on RT-related hypothyroidism, including estimated incidence, clinical risk factors, and dosimetric parameters that may be used to guide clinical decision making. Furthermore, we aimed to identify potential areas of improvement in the prevention and clinical management of RT-induced hypothyroidism, including the role of modern advanced therapeutic techniques. (2) Methods: We conducted a systemic review of the literature in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. PubMed and Google Scholar were searched to identify original research articles describing the incidence, mechanism, dosimetry, treatment, or prevention of radiation-related hypothyroidism for adults receiving RT for the treatment of head and neck cancers. The snowball method was used to identify additional articles. For identified articles, we tabulated several datapoints, including publication date, patient sample size, estimated hypothyroidism incidence, cancer site/type, follow-up period, radiation modality and technique, use of multimodality therapy, method of thyroid function evaluation, and proposed dosimetric predictors of hypothyroidism. (3) Results: One hundred and eleven articles met inclusion criteria, reflecting a range of head and neck cancer subtypes. There was a large variation in the estimated incidence of RT-related hypothyroidism, with a median estimate of 36% (range 3% to 79%). Reported incidence increased in later publication dates, which was likely related to improved screening and longer follow up. There were a wide variety of predictive metrics used to identify patients at high risk of hypothyroidism, the most common of which were volumetric and mean dosimetrics related to the thyroid gland (Vxx%, Dmean). More recently, there has been increasing evidence to suggest that the thyroid gland volume itself and the volume of the thyroid gland spared from high-dose radiation (VSxx) may better predict thyroid function after RT. There were no identified studies investigating the role of advanced radiotherapeutic techniques such as MRI-guided RT or particle therapy to decrease RT-related hypothyroidism. Conclusions: Hypothyroidism is a common toxicity resulting from therapeutic radiation for head and neck cancer with recent estimates suggesting 40-50% of patients may experience hypothyroidism after treatment. Dosimetric predictive models are increasingly able to accurately identify patients at risk of hypothyroidism, especially those utilizing thyroid VS metrics. Further investigation regarding the potential for advanced radiotherapeutic therapies to decrease RT-induced thyroid dysfunction is needed.

Carbon dots (CDs), which have particle size of less than 10 nm, are carbon-based nanomaterials that are used in a wide range of applications in the area of novel drug delivery in cancer, ocular diseases, infectious diseases, and brain disorders. CDs are biocompatible, eco-friendly, easy to synthesize, and less toxic with excellent chemical inertness, which makes them very good nanocarrier system to deliver multi-functional drugs effectively. A huge number of researchers worldwide are working on CDs-based drug delivery systems to evaluate their versatility and efficacy in the field of pharmaceuticals. As a result, there is a tremendous increase in our understanding of the physicochemical properties, diagnostic and drug delivery aspects of CDs, which consequently has led us to design and develop CDs-based theranostic system for the treatment of multiple disorders. In this review, we aim to summarize the advances in application of CDs as nanocarrier including gene delivery, vaccine delivery and antiviral delivery, that has been carried out in the last 5 years.

OBJECTIVE
In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we investigated the efficacy and safety of middle meningeal artery embolization (MMAE) using particle embolic agents to treat cSDH.
METHODS
To retrieve articles investigating outcomes of patients following MMAE with particle agents and to compare their outcome with conventional treatment, Scopus, PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were searched using relevant keywords. Original articles with more than 10 cases were included. The meta-analysis was carried out using the R studio and the random-effects model. Publication bias was assessed using Peter's test and quality assessment using NIH tools.
RESULTS
Eleven studies with 359 patients were included. The analysis revealed a pooled recurrence rate of 5% (CI: 3-8%), a need for reoperation rate of 5% (3-9%), and a peri-procedural complication rate of 4% (CI:2-9%) following MMAE with particle embolic agents. The pooled rates of decrease in size or resolution of the hematoma were 85% (CI:66-94%) and 66% (39-86%), respectively. Comparing MMAE using particulate embolysate with conventional treatments, risk ratio (RR) of 0.10 (CI:0.04-0.27) was achieved for recurrence, 0.25(CI:0.13-0.49) for reoperation, and 0.34 (CI:0.16-0.27) for peri-procedural complications. 91% of cSDH cases responded to MMAE with particles in the way they showed either down-sizing or complete resolution of the hematoma on follow-up imaging. In comparison, this rate was found to be 63% following conventional treatment.
CONCLUSION
Middle meningeal artery embolization using particle embolysates is a safe and effective technique for the treatment of cSDH, whether as a standalone intervention or in combination with conventional treatments.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Denture adhesives improve the mastication of complete denture wearers. However, the impact of denture adhesives with different presentations on mastication remains unclear.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this systematic review was to answer the focused question, "Do different presentations of denture adhesives affect the masticatory function of complete denture wearers?".
MATERIAL AND METHODS
This review was guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Six databases and the non-peer-reviewed literature were searched up to July 2021. Only clinical studies (randomized clinical trials and nonrandomized clinical trials) comparing the use of different denture adhesive presentations (cream, powder, or strips) were included, without language or follow-up restrictions. The risk of bias was assessed by using the Cochrane tools (RoB 2.0 and ROBINS-I). Masticatory performance, by using single and multiple sieves, masticatory performance with color-changing chewing gum (mixing ability), swallowing threshold (particle size and number of cycles), jaw kinematics, and occlusal force were considered. Meta-analyses were conducted to evaluate masticatory performance (single sieve) and occlusal force outcomes (α=.05), and the certainty of the evidence was determined with the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) evaluations.
RESULTS
Nine studies (6 randomized and 3 nonrandomized clinical trials) were included. The risk of bias was considered moderate. Meta-analyses showed no differences between cream and powder denture adhesives for masticatory performance (standard mean difference=0.02; 95% CI=-0.46 to 0.50, P=.93) or between cream and strip denture adhesives for occlusal force (mean difference=14.35; 95% CI=-11.14 to 39.84, P=.27). Similarly, in qualitative analysis, cream and powder denture adhesives' performances were similar regarding masticatory performance with color-changing chewing gum (mixing ability), occlusal force, swallowing threshold (particle size and number of cycles), and jaw kinematics (P>.05). However, for resorbed ridges, cream denture adhesive resulted in a higher masticatory performance than strip (P<.05). When comparing powder to strip denture adhesives, the occlusal force was higher in the powder group (P<.05). The certainty of evidence was very low for all evaluated outcomes.
CONCLUSIONS
Different presentations of denture adhesives seem to improve the masticatory function of complete denture wearers in a similar way. However, the qualitative analysis showed that, in patients with a resorbed ridge, a cream denture adhesive may be better than strips to improve mastication, although the certainty of evidence was very low.

One of the widely used microbiological methods to determine the toxicity of chemicals, catalysts, and other types of materials is the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test. The present study aims to investigate the influence of composition of composite materials based on TiO and their particle size as well as bacterial type and shape based on the MIC values reported in the literature. The results show that among the 36 articles selected, most of the studies used () (26) and () (19) bacteria to determine MIC values. This study revealed that the MIC in values below 70 µg ml for was lower than that for bacteria (below 200 µg ml). Importantly, MIC value decreased from 60.6 to 7.66 µg ml with decrease in the size of nanoparticles. It follows from the increased surface area for smaller-sized particles, thus increased interaction with bacteria during MIC test.

High-pressure homogenization (HPH) and ultrahigh-pressure homogenization (UHPH) are emerging food processing techniques for stabilizing emulsions and food components under the pressure range from 60 to 400 MPa. Apart from this, they also support increasing nutritional profile, food preservation, and functionality enhancement. Even though the food undergoes the shortest processing operation, the treatment leads to modification of physical, chemical, and techno-functional properties, in addition to the formation of micro-sized particles. This study focuses on recent advances in using HPH/UHPH on plant-based milk sources such as soybeans, almonds, hazelnuts, and peanuts. Overall, this systematic review provides an in-depth analysis of the principles of HPH/UHPH, the mechanism of action, and their applications in other nondairy areas such as fruits and vegetables, meat, fish, and marine species. This work also deciphers the role of HPH/UHPH in modifying food components, their functional quality enhancement, and their provision of oxidative resistance to many foods. HPH is not only perceived as a technique for size reduction and homogenization; however, it does various functions like microbial inactivation, improvement of rheologies like texture and consistency, decreasing of lipid oxidation, and making positive modifications to proteins such as changes to the secondary structure and tertiary structure thereby enhancing the emulsifying properties, hydrophobicity of proteins, and other associated functional properties in many nondairy sources at pressures of 100-300 MPa. Thus, HPH is an emerging technique with a high throughput and commercialization value in food industries.
