Oral spironolactone has been proposed as a potential treatment for hair loss due to its antiandrogenic properties. However, the efficacy and safety of spironolactone for treating hair loss are not well-established. The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the current literature on the use of oral spironolactone in female pattern hair loss. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials and observational studies that assessed the efficacy and safety of oral spironolactone for treating hair loss. We searched for eligible papers in PubMed, Web of Science (ISI), Embase, and Scopus. All analyses were done using R software version 4.2.3 (R Foundation for Statistical Computing, Vienna, Austria). The overall rate of improved hair loss was 56.60%, with a higher rate of improvement (65.80%) observed in the combined therapy group compared to the monotherapy group (43.21%). However, there was significant heterogeneity in the efficacy outcomes, and hair loss did not improve or showed a modest improvement in 37.80% of all patients. The rates of adverse events reported in at least two studies were scalp pruritus or increased scurf (18.92%), menstrual disorders (11.85%), facial hypertrichosis (6.93%), and drug discontinuation (2.79%). The overall adverse events rate was 3.69%, but there was significant heterogeneity in the rates of different adverse events. In conclusion, the present study suggests that spironolactone is an effective and safe treatment option for hair loss. However, further research is needed to fully understand the heterogeneity of treatment response and adverse events and identify factors that may predict treatment response.

This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to explore the association between atopic Dermatitis® (AD) and alopecia areata (AA). A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of Science from the inception of each database to November 10, 2022 for relevant studies. As there is a potential bilateral association between the 2 diseases, we assessed the prevalence/incidence of AA in patients with AD and the prevalence/incidence of AD in patients with AA. A total of 29 studies involving 11,233,448 participants were included in this analysis. AA was the exposure factor in 23 studies, AD in 7 studies, and both in 1 study. The meta-analysis revealed that the prevalence of AD was 11.2% (7.7%-15.1%) in patients with AA, and the prevalence of AA was 3.2% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.0%-11.5%) in patients with AD. The incidence of AD in AA patients was found to vary with age ( = 0.07). Based on 7 studies, there was a significant association between AD and AA when AA was the exposure factor [odds ratio, OR, = 4.537 (95% CI: 2.409-8.544)]; based on 10 studies, there was also a significant association between AD and AA when AD was the exposure factor [OR = 2.643 (95% CI: 1.737-3.995)]. In conclusion, this meta-analysis demonstrated the 2-way association between AD and AA, providing a clinical reference for disease prevention and control.

BACKGROUND
Combination treatments may improve the utility of approved agents for the treatment of pattern hair loss (PHL); however, head-to-head comparisons are lacking.
OBJECTIVE
The aim of the study was to compare the efficacy of 5% minoxidil, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and microneedling across adults with PHL insofar as change in total hair density at 24 weeks.
METHODS
We conducted a literature search in July 2022. Through our Bayesian network meta-analysis, we estimated treatments' surface under the cumulative ranking distribution (SUCRA) values and relative effects - in terms of mean difference (MD).
RESULTS
Data from 27 trials, totaling 1,110 patients, were extracted. Interventions were ranked based on the probability of inducing hair density improvements: 5% minoxidil plus microneedling (SUCRA = 95.8%), 5% minoxidil plus PRP (SUCRA = 64.7%), 5% minoxidil (SUCRA = 53.9%), PRP (SUCRA = 34.9%), microneedling (SUCRA = 27.8%), and PRP with microneedling (SUCRA = 22.9%). The efficacy of 5% minoxidil plus microneedling in improving total hair density was significantly greater ( < 0.05) than 5% minoxidil monotherapy (MD = 13 hairs/cm), PRP monotherapy (MD = 16 hairs/cm), and microneedling monotherapy (MD = 17 hairs/cm).
CONCLUSION
Five percent minoxidil plus microneedling is an effective treatment option for improving hair density at 6 months in adult PHL patients.

5α-Reductase inhibitors (5-ARIs) are widely prescribed for treatment of benign prostatic obstruction and androgenic alopecia. Several studies with controversial findings regarding 5-ARI exposure have been published over a number of years, and concerns were recently raised about the potential risks of depression and suicide associated with 5-ARIs. To investigate this association, we conducted a systematic review of the literature and a meta-analysis. Five studies involving 2213600 patients met our inclusion criteria. We found no statistically significant association between 5-ARI exposure and the risk of depression (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 1.30, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.85-2.00; p = 0.23) or suicide (aHR 1.30, 95% CI 0.65-2.61; p = 0.45). Subgroup analyses for finasteride and dutasteride revealed similar results. When restricting the analysis to patients without a prior diagnosis of depression, we observed similar findings (aHR for suicide 1.00, 95% CI 0.68-1.46; p = 0.98). PATIENT SUMMARY: We reviewed study data for more than two million patients taking drugs called 5α-reductase inhibitors (5-ARIs), which are widely prescribed for urinary problems caused by benign prostate enlargement and for male-pattern hair loss. In a pooled analysis we found no evidence of an association between 5-ARI use and the risk of depression or suicide.

Hair loss is a common condition with significant impact globally, yet its treatment efficacy and safety remain debated. Botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A) has emerged as a potential therapeutic option, but a comprehensive review on this topic is lacking
OBJECTIVE
This review critically evaluates the current evidence on BoNT-A for hair loss treatment, highlighting the gaps in previous reviews and providing a comprehensive analysis of its efficacy, safety, and future prospects.
METHODS
A systematic search of electronic databases identified relevant studies published up to September 2022
RESULTS
Prior reviews primarily focused on androgenetic alopecia and lacked the evaluation of other alopecia types and underlying mechanisms. Our review addresses this gap, incorporating a broader spectrum of hair loss conditions. Mechanisms of BoNT-A in hair growth modulation, potential side effects, and future research directions are discussed.
CONCLUSION
This review adds to the existing body of knowledge by providing a comprehensive evaluation of BoNT-A in hair loss treatment. The findings will serve as a foundation for further research and guide clinicians in making informed decisions, ultimately improving the outcomes and quality of life for individuals suffering from hair loss.

BACKGROUND
Alopecia areata (AA) is a chronic autoimmune disease that leads to a high psychiatric, economic, and systemic disease burden. A comprehensive understanding of AA epidemiology is essential for evaluating healthcare source utilization; however, there is a lack of systematic approach for summarizing epidemiologic data on AA.
OBJECTIVES
To systematically investigate the global, regional, and national incidence and prevalence of AA.
METHODS
A structured search was conducted using the Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, SciELO, and Korean journal databases from their inception date to October 4, 2023. Studies that reported the prevalence or incidence of AA were included. We used a Bayesian hierarchical linear mixed model to analyse the prevalence estimates. The primary outcomes of our study were the global, regional, and national prevalence of physician-diagnosed AA for overall population, adults, and children. The incidence data were summarised descriptively.
RESULTS
In total, 88 studies from 28 countries were included in the analysis. The reported incidence of alopecia areata tended to be higher in adults aged 19-50 years, and this trend was consistent with its estimated prevalence. The reported prevalence in overall population tended to be higher in men compared to in women. The estimated lifetime prevalence of AA was 0.10% (95% credible intervals, 0.03%-0.39%) in the general population worldwide, 0.12% (95% credible intervals, 0.02%-0.52%) in adults, and 0.03% (95% credible intervals, 0.01%-0.12%) in children. The estimated prevalence was highest in the Asian region and lowest in the African region.
CONCLUSIONS
In this study, 48% of the total Global Burden of Disease regions had insufficient data reporting the prevalence or incidence of AA. Further studies are needed to provide epidemiological information on middle- and low-income countries. Our study can serve as a crucial reference in terms of healthcare policy decisions.

Comparison of cutaneous adverse events between second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors and imatinib for chronic myeloid leukemia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
BACKGROUND
Patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) often experience cutaneous adverse events, such as rashes and pruritus. In this study, we aimed to compare the risks of cutaneous adverse events between imatinib- and second-generation TKI-treated patients with CML.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
Paired reviewers independently obtained studies from PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library published until 15 March 2022. The following terms were searched: (Leukemia, Myelogenous, Chronic and BCR-ABL Positive), chronic myeloid leukemia, tyrosine kinase inhibitor, TKI, imatinib, dasatinib, nilotinib, bosutinib, and radotinib. Two independent reviewers screened the results and selected articles on cutaneous adverse events. RevMan 5.4 and the Cochrane Collaboration tool were used to perform the meta-analysis and risk of bias assessment.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION
Eleven trials involving 4502 patients were analyzed in this study. Patients treated with second-generation TKIs were significantly more likely to experience cutaneous adverse events than those treated with imatinib with a relative risk (RR) of 1.62 (95% confidence interval [CI], [1.25-2.09]). Except dasatinib (RR [95% CI], 1.39 [0.75-2.56]), the risk of adverse events was more with second-generation TKIs than with imatinib as follows: nilotinib (2.11 [1.53-2.90]), bosutinib (1.41 [1.07-1.86]), and radotinib (1.87 [1.33-2.63]). Rash was the most common cutaneous adverse event that was observed in 21.6% of cases across all grades, followed by pruritus (5.7%) and alopecia (4.3%). In conclusion, our findings suggest that cutaneous adverse events occur more frequently with second-generation TKIs than with imatinib. Therefore, effective management of the cutaneous outcome is necessary to achieve high patient adherence to medication and successful treatment with TKIs.

INTRODUCTION
Non-scarring alopecia mainly includes androgenetic alopecia (AGA), female pattern hair loss (FPHL), alopecia areata (AA), telogen effluvium (TE), anagen effluvium (AE) and so on. Many studies had investigated the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level and vitamin D deficiency of patients with these diseases, but opinions varied, and no conclusion was reached.
METHODS
Relevant articles were retrieved through PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and other databases. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH) D] levels and vitamin D deficiency were used as our primary outcome. The odds ratio (OR) and the standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval were both examined for vitamin D deficiency and levels.
RESULTS
Our meta-analysis had included a total of 3374 non-scarring alopecia patients and 7296 healthy controls from 23 studies through the inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria. We found non-scarring alopecia had decreased serum 25(OH)D level (WMD -7.29; 95% CI -9.21, -5.38) and increased vitamin D deficiency incidence (OR 3.11 95% CI 2.29, 4.22), compared with healthy controls. This meta-analysis chose to conduct random-effect model and subgroup analysis, because of the high heterogeneity (serum 25(OH)D level: I 95%, vitamin D deficiency: I = 0%).
CONCLUSION
Patients with non-scarring alopecia (including AA, FPHL, AGA and TE) have insufficient serum level of 25(OH)D and increased incidence of vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D supplementation and monitoring for vitamin D deficiency may be helpful in treating non-scarring alopecia.

Cancer is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity all over the world and the second major cause of death in Portugal. Dermatological side effects resulting from cancer treatment have a psychosocial impact on patients' lives, such as quality of life (QoL), body image, cognitive fusion and social inhibition. This systematic review aimed to explore and synthesize the psychosocial impact of dermatological side effects of cancer treatment, answering the following research objectives: (i) Do the dermatological side effects of the cancer treatment present any psychosocial impact for the patients? (ii) How does the psychosocial impact of the dermatological toxicities of the cancer treatment manifest in patients' lives? Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed and guided a systematic search through the PubMed, Cochrane Library and PyscNet databases. The considered studies correlate dermatological side effects of cancer treatments and their psychological/psychosocial outcomes. The studies found were all published in peer-reviewed journals. The results obtained established that cancer treatment causes the most varied skin changes, consequently reducing self-esteem and QoL; disturbing body image; and contributing to cases of stress, depression and anxiety. There is still limited literature that profoundly investigates the experience of living with these skin toxicities. The development of research lines to improve knowledge in this field will allow for significant improvements in healthcare for patients undergoing cancer treatment who need to focus more on the psychosocial implications of skin toxicities. The novelty of this review lies in adding knowledge summarizing the psychosocial implications of dermatological side effects of cancer treatment to support healthcare providers in the development of integrative therapeutic strategies for these patients in their clinical practice.

Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is a scarring alopecia with fronto-temporo-parietal hairline recession. Although no proven treatment for FFA exists, dutasteride has been suggested as a potential treatment option. We aimed to evaluate the therapeutic response of oral dutasteride in FFA patients. The identification and selection of studies were conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis 2020 criteria. To assess the risk of bias for each study, we used the Cochrane's risk of bias in non-randomized studies of interventions (ROBINS-I) assessment tool. A random effects model meta-analysis was performed. Estimated proportion of stabilization for eligible studies was calculated to evaluate the effectiveness of dutasteride for treating FFA. Among patients who achieved stabilization, subgroup analysis was conducted on those showing improvement. Seven studies including 366 patients who received oral dutasteride were identified. The estimated proportion of patients who experienced stabilization of FFA with oral dutasteride was 0.628 (95% CI: 0.398-0.859). In subgroup analyses of patients who experienced improvement, the estimated proportion of improvement was 0.356 (95% CI: 0.163-0.549). In this systematic review and meta-analysis, oral dutasteride revealed to be a good treatment option for disease stabilization or improvement in patients with FFA.
