In vitro comparative study between adhesion forces obtained on zirconia ceramic micromechanically treated with femtosecond laser (1027 nm), carbon dioxide laser (10,600 nm), and aluminum-oxide particles.
Conventional surface roughening treatments used for silica-based ceramics in order to improve subsequent adhesion become unreliable for zirconia ceramics. Laser conditioning can be a good alternative. The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare conventional (macro) shear bond strength (SBS) values obtained between resin composite and zirconium oxide ceramic samples grouped according to different micromechanical treatments received, and examine differences in surface roughness. One-hundred and fifty disks of sintered zirconia were randomly divided into 5 groups and roughened as follows: (1) Group NOT, no surface treatment; (2) Group APA, abraded with 50-μm aluminum-oxide (AlO) particles; (3) Group TBS, abraded with 30-μm aluminum-oxide particles covered with silica; (4) Group CO2, irradiated with a CO laser which emitted in continuous wave mode at 3 W of power; and (5) Group FEM, irradiated with a pulsed femtosecond laser, with an incident energy of 10 μJ, a frequency of 1000 Hz, and a fluence of 1.3 kJ/cm. All surfaces were treated with a MDP-containing adhesive/silane coupling agent mixture upon which were prepared and light polymerized composite resin cylinders. Shear bond strength was measured and samples were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) were found among all groups, except between CO and FEM, which showed the highest adhesion values (15.12 ± 2.35 MPa and 16.03 ± 2.73 MPa). SEM revealed differences in surface patterns. CO laser irradiation can be an alternative to sandblasting, although it could also weaken the ceramic. Suitable surface patterns on zirconia ceramics can be obtained with ultrashort pulsed radiation emitted by a pulsed femtosecond laser.

Review
Advanced functional two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials offer unique advantages in drug delivery systems for disease treatment. Kaolinite (Kaol), a nanoclay mineral, is a natural 2D nanomaterial because of its layered silicate structure with nanoscale layer spacing. Recently, Kaol nanoclay is used as a carrier for controlled drug release and improved drug dissolution owing to its advantageous properties such as surface charge, strong biocompatibility, and naturally layered structure, making it an essential development direction for nanoclay-based drug carriers. This review outlines the main physicochemical characteristics of Kaol and the modification methods used for its application in biomedicine. The safety and biocompatibility of Kaol are addressed, and details of the application of Kaol as a drug delivery nanomaterial in antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer treatment are discussed. Furthermore, the challenges and prospects of Kaol-based drug delivery nanomaterials in biomedicine are discussed. This review recommends directions for the further development of Kaol nanocarriers by improving their physicochemical properties and expanding the bioapplication range of Kaol.

The global "copper-poor and aluminum-rich" situation has made the possibility of "copper saving with aluminum" an important topic. This study established a framework for analyzing multiple substances' coupled flows at the product level based on material flow analysis (MFA), and took the household air conditioning system of the Chinese mainland in 2020 as an example to characterize the coupled flows of aluminum and copper. The results showed that the system consumed 0.69 million tons of aluminum and 2.10 million tons of copper, and discharged 0.17 million tons of aluminum and 0.43 million tons of copper to the environment cumulatively to achieve 13.2 million terajoules of final heat exchanged and serve 1.24 billion square meters during lifetime in mainland China alone, secondary aluminum and copper accounted for only 22.61% and 24.83% of the total consumption, and the in-use stocks increased by 0.19 million tons of aluminum and 0.70 million tons of copper. The external dependency of copper ore was 92.83%, which was significantly higher than the 44.29% of bauxite. The comprehensive utilization efficiency of copper reached 77.88%, which was slightly higher than the 70.80% of aluminum. The conclusion indicates that under the premise of meeting use requirements, promoting "replacing copper with aluminum" can improve the stability and safety of China's material supply chain, but there is a need to further boost the production efficiency of aluminum in primary production.

Meta-Analysis Review
OBJECTIVES
The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to assess the comparative clinical success and survival of intracoronal indirect restorations using gold, lithium disilicate, leucite, and indirect composite materials.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
This systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions and PRISMA guidelines. The protocol for this study was registered in PROSPERO (registration number: CRD42021233185). A comprehensive literature search was conducted across various databases and sources, including PubMed/Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, ClinicalTrials.gov, and gray literature. A total of 7826 articles were screened on title and abstract. Articles were not excluded based on the vitality of teeth, the language of the study, or the observation period. The risk difference was utilized for the analyses, and a random-effects model was applied. All analyses were conducted with a 95% confidence interval (95% CI). The calculated risk differences were derived from the combined data on restoration survival and failures obtained from each individual article. The presence of heterogeneity was assessed using the I statistic, and if present, the heterogeneity of the data in the articles was evaluated using the non-parametric chi-squared statistic (p < 0.05).
RESULTS
A total of 12 eligible studies were selected, which included 946 restorations evaluated over a minimum observation period of 1 year and a maximum observation period of 7 years. Results of the meta-analysis indicated that intracoronal indirect resin composite restorations have an 18% higher rate of failure when compared to intracoronal gold restorations over 5-7 years of clinical service (risk difference = - 0.18 [95% CI: - 0.27, - 0.09]; p = .0002; I = 0%). The meta-analysis examining the disparity in survival rates between intracoronal gold and leucite restorations could not be carried out due to methodological differences in the studies.
CONCLUSIONS
According to the currently available evidence, medium-quality data indicates that lithium disilicate and indirect composite materials demonstrate comparable survival rates in short-term follow-up. Furthermore, intracoronal gold restorations showed significantly higher survival rates, making them a preferred option over intracoronal indirect resin-composite restorations. Besides that, the analysis revealed no statistically significant difference in survival rates between leucite and indirect composite restorations. The short observation period, limited number of eligible articles, and low sample size of the included studies were significant limitations.
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Bearing in mind the limitations of the reviewed literature, this systematic review and meta-analysis help clinicians make evidence-based decisions on how to restore biomechanically compromised posterior teeth.

The rapid growth in the use of aluminum oxide nanoparticles (AlO NPs) in various fields such as medicine, pharmacy, cosmetics industries and engineering, and the fact that these NPs and their wastes mix with the aquatic environment and damage the aquatic ecosystem, affect the organisms in the water, enter the food chain and reach humans is a major problem is cause for concern. The aim of this study is to investigate the oxidative stress caused by two separate forms of aluminum oxide, γ-AlO and α-AlO, in Gammarus pulex, which is a good indicator species, with biochemical parameters. For this purpose, G. pulex was exposed to different concentrations (0, 10, 20, 40 ppm) of γ-AlO and α-AlO separately. The experiments were carried out for 24 and 96 h by creating 3 repeated experimental groups consisting of 4 groups. For biomarker analysis, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) activities and glutathione (GSH) and thiobarbituric acid (TBARS) levels were performed using an ELISA kit. As a result of the in experimental study, it was observed that both nanoparticles affected oxidative stress and antioxidant parameters after 96 h compared to the control group. Increases in SOD activity were observed, γ-AlO caused a decrease in CAT activity at 24 h, and α- AlO caused increases in CAT activity at 96 h. Decreases in GSH levels and increases in TBARS levels have been observed.

Biogenic synthesis of ZnO and Al2O3 nanoparticles using Camellia sinensis and Origanum vulgare L. leaves extract for spectroscopic estimation of ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin in commercial formulations.
The current study describes the biogenic synthesis of two metal oxides zinc oxide (ZnO), aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles using Camellia sinensis, and Origanum vulgare L. leaves extract, respectively. The synthesized metal oxide nanoparticles were investigated using spectroscopic and microscopic techniques to confirm the formation of their nanostructures. Accurate and precise spectrofluorometric probes were proposed for the quantification of Ofloxacin (OFX) and Ciprofloxacin (CPFX) in their bulk and commercial formulations. The extraordinary properties of Zinc oxide and aluminum oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs and Al2O3NPs) enhance the fluorescence intensity in the presence of 0.5 mL and 1.0 mL of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS, 1.0% w/v) as organizing agent for the detection of OFX and CPFX, respectively. The optical detection of both drugs at λex/em range 250-700 nm displayed linearity with a main correlation coefficient >0.999 at 1-300 (OFX-SDS-ZnONPs) and 0.5-100 (OFX-SDS-Al2O3NPs) ng mL-1,10-400 (CPFX-SDS-ZnONPs) and 0.1-50 (CPFX-SDS-Al2O3NPs) ng mL-1. The detection and quantification limits were found to be 0.04, 0.03, and 0.02, 0.04 ng mL-1, 0.13, 0.10, and 7.24, 0.09 ng mL-1 for the above-mentioned fluorescence systems, respectively. The suggested spectrofluorometric probes were validated and potentially applied for the estimation of OFX and CPFX in their bulk and commercial formulations.

In aluminum electrolysis, the iron-rich cover material is formed on the cover material and the steel rod connecting the carbon anode. Due to the high iron content in the iron-rich cover material, it differs from traditional cover material and thus requires harmless recycling and treatment. A process was proposed and used in this study to recovery F, Al, and Fe elements from the iron-rich cover material. This process involved aluminum sulfate solution leaching for fluorine recovery and alkali-acid synergistic leaching for α-AlO and FeO recovery were obtained. The optimal leaching rates for F, Na, Ca, Fe, and Si were 93.92, 96.25, 94.53, 4.48, and 28.87%, respectively. The leaching solution and leaching residue were obtained. The leaching solution was neutralized to obtain the aluminum hydroxide fluoride hydrate (AHFH, AlF(OH)·(HO)). AHFH was calcined to form a mixture of AlF and AlO with a purity of 96.14%. The overall recovery rate of F in the entire process was 92.36%. Additionally, the leaching residue was sequentially leached with alkali and acid to obtain the acid leach residue α-AlO. The pH of the acid-leached solution was adjusted to produce a black-brown precipitate, which was converted to FeO under a high-temperature calcination, and the recovery rate of Fe in the whole process was 94.54%. Therefore, this study provides a new method for recovering F, Al, and Fe in iron-rich cover material, enabling the utilization of aluminum hazardous waste sources.

III-nitride wide bandgap semiconductors are promising materials for modern optoelectronics and electronics. Their application has progressed greatly thanks to the continuous quality improvements of heteroepitaxial films grown on large-lattice-mismatched foreign substrates. But compared with bulk single crystals, there is still tremendous room for the further improvement of the material quality. Here we show a paradigm to achieve high-quality III-nitride heteroepitaxial films by the controllable discretization and coalescence of columns. By adopting nano-patterned AlN/sapphire templates with regular hexagonal holes, discrete AlN columns coalesce with uniform out-of-plane and in-plane orientations guaranteed by sapphire nitridation pretreatment and the ordered lateral growth of cleavage facets, which efficiently suppresses the regeneration of threading dislocations during coalescence. The density of dislocation etch pits in the AlN heteroepitaxial film reaches 3.3 × 10 cm, close to the present available AlN bulk single crystals. This study facilitates the growth of bulk-class quality III-nitride films featuring low cost and scalability.

BACKGROUND
MicroRNAs, as oncogenes or tumor suppressors, enable to up or down-regulate gene expression during tumorigenesis. The detection of miRNAs with high sensitivity is crucial for the early diagnosis of cancer. Inspired by biological ion channels, artificial nanochannels are considered as an excellent biosensing platform with relatively high sensitivity and stability. The current nanochannel biosensors are mainly based on homogeneous membranes, and their monotonous structure and functionality limit its further development. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a heterostructured nanochannel with high ionic current rectification to achieve highly sensitive miRNA detection.
RESULTS
In this work, an asymmetric heterostructured nanochannel constructed from dendrimer-gold nanoparticles network and anodic aluminum oxide are designed through an interfacial super-assembly method, which can regulate ion transport and achieve sensitive detection of target miRNA. The symmetry breaking is demonstrated to endow the heterostructured nanochannels with an outstanding ionic current rectification performance. Arising from the change of surface charges in the nanochannels triggered by DNA cascade signal amplification in solution, the proposed heterogeneous nanochannels exhibits excellent DNA-regulated ionic current response. Relying on the nucleic acid's hybridization and configuration transformation, the target miRNA-122 associated with liver cancer can be indirectly quantified with a detection limit of 1 fM and a wide dynamic range from 1 fM to 10 pM. The correlation fitting coefficient R2 of the calibration curve can reach to 0.996. The experimental results show that the method has a good recovery rate (98%-105 %) in synthetic samples.
SIGNIFICANCE
This study reveals how the surface charge density of nanochannels regulate the ionic current response in the heterostructured nanochannels. The designed heterogeneous nanochannels not only possess high ionic current rectification property, but also enable to induce superior transport performance by the variation of surface chemistry. The proposed biosensor is promising for applications in early diagnosis of cancers, life science research, and single-entity electrochemical detection.
