Auditory roughness in medical alarm sounds is an important design attribute, and has been shown to impact user performance and perception. While roughness can assist in decreased signal-to-noise ratios (perceived loudness) and communicate urgency, it might also impact patient recovery. Therefore, considerations of neuroscience correlates, music theory, and patient impact are critical aspects to investigate in order to optimise alarm design.

Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were measured at 57 kHz in two dolphins warned of an impending intense tone at 40 kHz. Over the course of testing, the duration of the intense tone was increased from 0.5 to 16 s to determine if changes in ABRs observed after cessation of the intense sound were the result of post-stimulatory auditory fatigue or conditioned hearing attenuation. One dolphin exhibited conditioned hearing attenuation after the warning sound preceding the intense sound, but little evidence of post-stimulatory fatigue after the intense sound. The second dolphin showed no conditioned attenuation before the intense sound, but auditory fatigue afterwards. The fatigue was observed within a few seconds after cessation of the intense tone: i.e., at time scales much shorter than those in previous studies of marine mammal noise-induced threshold shifts, which feature measurements on the order of a few minutes after exposure. The differences observed between the two individuals (less auditory fatigue in the dolphin that exhibited the conditioned attenuation) support the hypothesis that conditioned attenuation is a form of "self-mitigation."

BACKGROUND
COVID-19 may result in persistent symptoms in the post-acute phase, including cognitive and neurological ones. The aim of this study is to investigate the cognitive and neurological features of patients with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 evaluated in the post-acute phase through a direct neuropsychological evaluation.
METHODS
Individuals recovering from COVID-19 were assessed in an out-patient practice with a complete neurological evaluation and neuropsychological tests (Mini-Mental State Examination; Rey Auditory Verbal Test, Multiple Feature Target Cancellation Test, Trial Making Test, Digit Span Forward and Backward, and Frontal Assessment Battery). Pre- and post-COVID-19 global and mental health status was assessed along with the history of the acute phase of infection. Post-COVID-19 cognitive status was modeled by combining persistent self-reported COVID-related cognitive symptoms and pathologic neuropsychological tests.
RESULTS
A total of 406 individuals (average age 54.5 ± 15.1 years, 45.1% women) were assessed on average at 97.8 ± 48.0 days since symptom onset. Persistent self-reported neurological symptoms were found in the areas of sleep (32%), attention (31%), and memory (22%). The MMSE mean score was 28.6. In total, 84 subjects (20.7%) achieved pathologic neuropsychological test results. A high prevalence of failed tests was found in digit span backward (18.7%), trail making (26.6%), and frontal assessment battery (10.9%). Cognitive status was associated with a number of factors including cardiovascular disease history, persistent fatigue, female sex, age, anxiety, and mental health stress.
CONCLUSION
COVID-19 is capable of eliciting persistent measurable neurocognitive alterations particularly relevant in the areas of attention and working memory. These neurocognitive disorders have been associated with some potentially treatable factors and others that may stratify risk at an early stage.

Optimizing the training regimen depending on neuromuscular fatigue is crucial for the well-being of professionals intensively practicing motor skills, such as athletes and musicians, as persistent fatigue can hinder learning and cause neuromuscular injuries. However, accurate assessment of fatigue is challenging because of the dissociation between subjective perception and its impact on motor and cognitive performance. To address this issue, we investigated the interplay between fatigue and learning development in 28 pianists during three hours of auditory-motor training, dividing them into two groups subjected to different resting conditions. Changes in behavior and muscle activity during training were measured to identify potential indicators capable of detecting fatigue before subjective awareness. Our results indicate that motor learning and fatigue development are independent of resting frequency and timing. Learning indices, such as reduction in force and timing errors throughout training, did not differ between the groups. No discernible distinctions emerged in fatigue-related behavioral and physiological indicators between the groups. Regression analysis revealed that several fatigue-related indicators, such as tapping speed variability and electromyogram amplitude per unit force, could explain the learning of timing and force control. Our findings suggest the absence of a universal resting schedule for optimizing auditory-motor learning.

OBJECTIVE
Hearing disorders are common among music professionals, as they are frequently exposed to sound levels exceeding 100 dB(A). By assessing auditory fatigue, situations that are deleterious for hearing could be identified, allowing the deployment of preventive measures before permanent impairment occurs. However, little is known about the factors contributing to auditory fatigue. The objective is to determine the exposure parameters most influencing auditory fatigue during occupational exposure to amplified music.
DESIGN
Auditory fatigue was defined as variations of both pure tone auditory (ΔPTA) and efferent reflex thresholds (ΔER) during the workday. Noise exposure was monitored and information on the volunteers was gathered using a questionnaire.
STUDY SAMPLE
The population consisted of 43 adult volunteers exposed to amplified music (sound, light or stage technicians, security agents, barmen) and 24 unexposed administrative agents.
RESULTS
ΔPTA and ΔER were positively correlated with the energy of noise exposure and its stability over time, a steady noise tends to create more auditory fatigue.
CONCLUSION
In addition to a global decrease of music levels and a systematic use of hearing protection, our results advocate for the provision of quiet periods within noise exposures as they reduce auditory fatigue accumulation and long-term risks for hearing.

PURPOSE
Altered auditory feedback research aims to identify methods to strengthen speakers' awareness of their own voicing behaviors, diminish their perception of vocal fatigue, and improve their voice production. This study aims to compare the effects of two bone conduction devices that provide altered auditory feedback.
METHOD
Twenty participants (19-33 years old, age: [] = 25.5 [3.85] years) participated in a vocal loading task using a standard Forbrain device that provides filtered auditory feedback via bone conduction and a modified Forbrain device that provides only sidetone amplification, and a control condition with no device was also included. They rated their vocal fatigue on a visual analog scale every 2 min during the vocal loading task. Additionally, pre- and postloading voice samples were analyzed for acoustic voice parameters.
RESULTS
Across all participants, the use of bone conduction-altered auditory feedback devices resulted in a lower vocal fatigue when compared to the condition with no feedback. During the pre- and postvoice samples, the sound pressure level decreased significantly during feedback conditions. During feedback conditions, spectral mean and standard deviation significantly decreased, and spectral skew significantly increased.
CONCLUSION
The results promote bone conduction as a possible preventative tool that may reduce self-reported vocal fatigue and compensatory voice production for healthy individuals without voice disorders.

Laboratory testing can provide information useful to promote patient health literacy and ultimately patient well-being. The human state of mind involves not only cognition but also emotion and motivation factors when receiving, processing, and acting upon information. The cognitive load for patients acquiring and processing new information is high. Modes of distribution can affect both attention to and receipt of information. Implicit unconscious biases can affect whom and what patients believe. Positive wording and framing of information with salience for patients can evoke positive emotions. Providing patients with the gist, or essential meaning, of information can positively influence decision-making. What laboratorians provide as information helps to combat mis- and disinformation. Laboratorians can actively participate in measures to improve the patient experience in health care by developing and contributing to high-quality information to enable timely, meaningful communication and interpretation of test results.

Vocal fatigue is known as a hyperfunctional voice disorder that can lead to other conditions, such as muscle tension dysphonia (MTD). Speech and language pathologists (SLPs) are professional voice users who may suffer from vocal fatigue due to heavy vocal demands. This study aimed at investigating the cepstral and perceptual dimensions of voice and their correlation in the SLPs with vocal fatigue. Twenty-six SLPs and senior speech therapy students (mean age = 27.11 ± 6.8 yrs), including men (n = 5) and women (n = 21), participated in this descriptive cross-sectional study. They had vocal fatigue according to the Vocal Fatigue Index (VFI). In acoustic assessment, cepstral analysis (CPP and CPPS) was performed using software. The Persian version of Consensus Auditory Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (CAPE-V) was used to evaluate the overall severity of dysphonia. The correlation between these two evaluations was also investigated using IBM SPSS Statistics software version 23. Results revealed that the mean CPPS (13.716 ± 2.084) was lower than the cutoff point. Perceptual findings indicated that the mean overall severity (10.557 ± 11.210) fell in the normal variability of voice quality (NVVQ) range. In addition, cepstral and perceptual evaluations had no significant correlation ( > 0/05). The findings showed that auditory-perceptual evaluation considered the gold standard method of voice evaluation, cannot solely identify vocal fatigue. However, cepstral measures can help provide a more objective profile of vocal function in SLPs with vocal fatigue. Therefore, both of these evaluations are recommended for voice assessment of vocal fatigue.

The poor design of conventional auditory medical alarms has contributed to alarm desensitization, and eventually, alarm fatigue in medical personnel. This study tested a novel multisensory alarm system which aims to help medical personnel better interpret and respond to alarm annunciation during periods of high cognitive load such as those found within intensive care units. We tested a multisensory alarm that combined auditory and vibrotactile cues to convey alarm type, alarm priority, and patient identity. Testing was done in three phases: control (conventional auditory), Half (limited multisensory alarm), and Full (complete multisensory alarm). Participants (N = 19, undergraduates) identified alarm type, priority, and patient identity (patient 1 or 2) using conventional and multisensory alarms, while simultaneously completing a cognitively demanding task. Performance was based on reaction time (RT) and identification accuracy of alarm type and priority. Participants also reported their perceived workload. RT was significantly faster for the Control phase (p < 0.05). Participant performance in identifying alarm type, priority, and patient did not differ significantly between the three phase conditions (p = 0.87, 0.37, and 0.14 respectively). The Half multisensory phase produced the lowest mental demand, temporal demand, and overall perceived workload score. These data suggest that implementation of a multisensory alarm with alarm and patient information may decrease perceived workload without significant changes in alarm identification performance. Additionally, a ceiling effect may exist for multisensory stimuli, with only part of an alarm benefitting from multisensory integration.

INTRODUCTION
Goals of voice therapy and vocal pedagogy share similar principles and therefore, therapy approaches designed to improve the disordered voice may be equally effective when used to enhance healthy voice and vice versa. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of flow phonation voice exercises on vocal characteristics of students in undergraduate vocal music training programs and examine their potential use in vocal pedagogy.
METHODS
A total of 10 cis females were recruited and were randomized into two groups: an experimental group (group 1, n = 6) receiving five sessions of flow phonation intervention across 5 weeks; and a control group (group 2, n = 4) that did not receive any direct intervention other than vocal hygiene education. Participants provided data pertaining to auditory perception, subjective respiratory measures, voice-related quality of life, and vocal fatigue before and after 5 weeks. Flow phonation exercises consisted of cup bubble blowing, gargling, and stretch and flow. Wilcoxon signed ranks test was administered to compare outcomes across time points and between groups.
RESULTS
Data indicate statistically significant changes in auditory perception of the singing voice, and voice-related quality of life for the group that received flow phonation exercises alone. No other measures showed statistical significance.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION
Overall, this study indicates that the use of flow phonation voice exercises has the potential to improve voice instruction within the voice studio. While our target enrollments were not met to achieve optimal statistical power, our hypotheses were at least partially supported. In particular, positive intervention-related changes were observed in self-perceived voice handicap, and auditory perception of singing which were not observed in the control group.
