There has been a significant increase in sodium azide intoxications since the 1980s. Intoxications caused by sodium azide are becoming increasingly prevalent in the Netherlands as a result of its promotion for the purpose of self-euthanasia. The mechanism of toxicity is not completely understood but is dose-dependent. The presented case describes a suicide by sodium azide of a young woman (26 years old) with a history of depression and suicide attempts. The decedent was found in the presence of prescription medicine, including temazepam, domperidone in combination with omeprazole, and the chemical preservative sodium azide. Quantitative toxicology screening of whole blood revealed the presence of 70 µg/L temazepam (toxic range > 1000 µg/L) and 28 mg/L sodium azide (fatal range: 2.6-262 mg/L). Whole blood qualitative analysis revealed the presence of temazepam, temazepam-glucuronide, olanzapine, n-desmethylolanzapine, and acetaminophen. In circles promoting sodium azide, it is recommended to use sodium azide in combination with medications targeting sodium azide's negative effects, such as analgesics, antiemetics, and anti-anxiety drugs. The medicines recovered at the body's location, as well as the results of the toxicology screens, were consistent with the recommendations of self-euthanasia using sodium azide.

A growing number of diverse familial structures wish to colactate their infant. For transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals, chestfeeding or breastfeeding may be within their goals of parenthood. There is limited evidence on how to induce lactation for a nongestational parent on gender affirming estrogen treatment. We report the case of a transgender woman who successfully underwent lactation induction following a protocol using the galactogue domperidone plus use of a breast pump. The patient had modifications to her hormone therapy with estrogen and progesterone while remaining on antiandrogen therapy with spironolactone. A description of the protocol, medications, laboratory monitoring, human milk analysis including macronutrients, oligosaccharides, and hormones is presented. This is the fourth case to date known in the literature of a transgender woman with successful lactation induction, and the third case to remain on antiandrogen therapy during this process. Our report is the second to demonstrate comparable macronutrients, and the first to report on human milk oligosaccharides and hormones in induced milk compared with term human milk of a gestational parent. The opportunity to chestfeed or breastfeed an infant can be profound for many parents. Further research is needed to meet the needs of TGD individuals who wish to induce lactation as part of their parental goals.

Lactation induction in transgender women is a clinical and research priority in the field of breastfeeding medicine. To date, there are four case reports detailing successful induced lactation in transgender patients who wished to breastfeed. The Academy of Breast Feeding Medicine does not formally recommend a specific medication regimen for transgender patients due to lack of high-quality research. A 50-year-old transgender woman with a hypercoagulable disorder who was able to lactate and breastfeed with novel hormone regimen management at a gender care clinic. Her baseline hormone treatment was an estradiol 0.3 mg transdermal patch every 72 hours and micronized progesterone 200 mg daily. Within four weeks of initiating a modified hormone regimen (estradiol 0.4 mg patch every 72 hours, progesterone 300 mg daily, metoclopramide 10 mg three times daily), the patient was lactating spontaneously. On multiple occasions, she breastfed and expressed up to 30 mL of milk through pumping. This report offers a new effective hormone regimen for transgender patients who wish to lactate and cannot access domperidone-the galactagogue used in previous case reports. It also provides a review of previously published case reports on this subject. Future research in this field should prioritize cohort studies of transgender patients who desire lactation to further assess patient attitudes, experiences, and outcomes.

Artificial reproduction is a bottleneck to produce stocking material for many species of freshwater fish. One of these species is the asp, Leuciscus aspius. Research in the field of artificial reproduction of this species is very scarce and often incomplete. There are no breeding protocols specifying optimal environmental conditions and hormonal stimulation for many species of rheophilic cyprinids, including asp. Since the number of natural asp populations is constantly decreasing, it is important to support natural stocks by restocking with high quality stocking material. For this reason, optimized protocols are needed to breed this species under controlled conditions to produce stocking material with high biodiversity and good health. Such an approach will make it possible to maintain the population of natural asp at a constant level. The aim of this study was to develop the protocol of asp artificial reproduction using optimized thermal conditions and appropriate hormonal stimulation. In experiment I, the influence of constant temperature (10.0, 12.0 and 14.0 °C) on the effectiveness of artificial reproduction of asp. In experiment II, the effectiveness of asp reproduction was checked after the application of spawning agents: Ovopel, Ovaprim or a combination of these two agents The obtained results indicate that for the final maturation of oocytes (FOM) and artificial reproduction of asp in controlled conditions, water temperatures of 10-12 °C are the most useful. Under these thermal conditions, the highest percentages of female's ovulation and embryo survival, as well as the percentage of hatching, were obtained. Hormone injections are necessary to perform final oocyte maturation (FOM) in female asp in captivity. All spawning agents used were especially useful for artificial reproduction of asp, however, the best values of the studied indices, such as ovulation rate and embryo survival, were obtained after the application of Ovaprim or the combination of Ovopel and Ovaprim in water temperature at a range of 10-12 °C. It was found that the pH of ovarian fluid may be a preliminary indicator of the biological quality of eggs in asps. The optimal pH value is 8.0-8.4. At pH below 7.4, no viable embryos were observed.

This case report describes the long-term success of a subcutaneous ureteral bypass device in a dog for treatment of a ureteral obstruction. The suspected xanthine urolithiasis was secondary to treatment with allopurinol for leishmaniasis. The dog presented initially with lethargy, anuria and abdominal pain. Mild azotemia was found on biochemical analysis and abdominal ultrasound revealed bilateral ureteral obstruction. A subcutaneous ureteral bypass was subsequently placed using a standard surgical technique. The dog recovered uneventfully and the azotemia resolved within days. Follow-up examinations were performed every trimester for over three years and no complications like obstruction of the bypass tubes, urinary tract infection or azotemia were recognized during this follow-up period. Allopurinol was replaced with domperidone as long-term treatment against Leishmaniasis which resulted in a mild increase of the leishmania serum antibody titer. The subcutaneous ureteral bypass placement was successful and safe in this dog and is a valuable alternative in cases of ureteral obstruction also in dogs.
