CONTEXT
Handheld percussive massage devices (ie, massage guns) are a relatively new and under-researched recovery tool. These tools are intended to increase range of motion and reduce muscle soreness by delivering targeted vibration to soft tissues. Empirical knowledge about the potential influence of these devices on perceptual recovery and the recovery of performance characteristics after exercise is scarce.
OBJECTIVE
To investigate the effect of a 5-minute massage gun application, using a commercially available device, on physical and perceptual recovery after a strenuous bout of lower body exercise.
DESIGN
Controlled laboratory study.
SETTING
Physiology laboratory.
PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS
A total of 65 active young adults (age = 21.3 ± 1.4 years; age range = 18-30 years; 34 women: height = 165.8 ± 6.1 cm, mass = 66.0 ± 7.4 kg; 31 men: height = 181.1 ± 6.0 cm, mass = 81.5 ± 11.8 kg).
INTERVENTION(S)
Participants applied a massage gun on the calf muscles of 1 leg after strenuous exercise (massage gun recovery group) for 5 minutes and used no recovery intervention on the other leg (control group).
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S)
Ankle range of motion, calf circumference, isometric strength, calf endurance, and perceived muscle soreness measures were collected at baseline and at various points after lower body exercise.
RESULTS
No significant group × time interactions were recorded for any of the performance or perceptual measures (P values > .05). Effect sizes were mostly unclear, except for a small increase in perceived muscle soreness in the massage gun recovery group compared with the control group immediately (d = -0.35) and 4 hours (d = -0.48) postrecovery.
CONCLUSIONS
Massage guns appeared to have little effect on physical measures when applied for 5 minutes immediately after strenuous calf exercise. Given the small increase in muscle soreness up to 4 hours after their use, caution is recommended when using massage guns immediately after strenuous lower body exercise.

Mayaro virus (MAYV), the etiologic agent of Mayaro fever, leads patients to severe myalgia and arthralgia, which can have a major impact on public health in all the countries where the virus circulates. The emergence and dissemination of new viruses have led the scientific community to develop new in vivo models that can help in the fight against new diseases. So far, mice have been the most used animal model in studies with MAYV and have proved to be an adequate model for recapitulating several aspects of the disease observed in humans. Mice are widely used in in vivo research and, therefore, are well known in the scientific community, which has allowed for different strains to be investigated in the study of MAYV. In this review, we summarize the main studies with MAYV using mice as an experimental model and discuss how they can contribute to the advancement of the understanding of its pathogenesis and the development of new drugs and vaccines.

We aimed to systematically evaluate the prevalence and clinical characteristics of adverse events associated with the adaptogens and antidepressant drug interactions in a retrospective chart review. A total of 1,816 reports of adverse events were evaluated. Cases were included in the analysis if the pharmacoepidemiological analysis showed the presence of a high probability of a causal relationship between an adaptogen and antidepressant interaction and the occurrence of adverse events. The following data were extracted from the reports: age, sex, antidepressant, plant products containing adaptogens, other concomitant medications, and clinical consequences of the interactions and their possible mechanisms. Adaptogens were involved in 9% of adverse events associated with the concomitant use of antidepressants and other preparations. We identified 30 reports in which side effects presented a causal relationship with the use of antidepressants and adaptogens. Here, we present the list of adaptogens with the corresponding antidepressants and the side effects caused by their interactions: : reboxetine (testicle pain and ejaculatory dysfunctions), sertraline (severe diarrhea), escitalopram (myalgia, epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, restless legs syndrome, and severe cough), and paroxetine (generalized myalgia, ophthalmalgia, and ocular hypertension); : duloxetine (upper gastrointestinal bleeding), paroxetine (epistaxis), sertraline (vaginal hemorrhage), and agomelatine (irritability, agitation, headache, and dizziness); : bupropion (arthralgia and thrombocytopenia), amitriptyline (delirium), and fluoxetine (dysuria); : citalopram (generalized pruritus), escitalopram (galactorrhea), and trazodone (psoriasis relapse); : mianserin (arrhythmias), mirtazapine (edema of lower limbs and myalgia), and fluoxetine (gynecomastia); : mianserin (restless legs syndrome), paroxetine (gynecomastia and mastalgia), and venlafaxine (hyponatremia); : agomelatine (back pain and hyperhidrosis) and moclobemide (myocardial infarction); : duloxetine (back pain); : sertraline (upper gastrointestinal bleeding); : mianserin (restless legs syndrome); and : bupropion (seizures). Clinicians should monitor the adverse events associated with the concomitant use of adaptogens and antidepressant drugs in patients with mental disorders. Aggregation of side effects and pharmacokinetic interactions (inhibition of CYP and p-glycoprotein) between those medicines may result in clinically significant adverse events.

In everyday clinical practice, immunologically mediated systemic vasculitides are among the rare diseases, meaning that basic knowledge of major symptoms and indicative laboratory findings is crucial for the inclusion of these complex clinical entities in differential diagnostic considerations. For many years, systemic vasculitides have been classified according to the primarily affected vessel size, distinguishing large, medium-sized, and small vessels. Pain is very often one of the main complaints of these diseases, be it, for example, the temporally accentuated headache in giant cell arteritis, the early morning myalgias in the shoulder and hip girdle in polymyalgia rheumatica, or the mononeuritis multiplex in eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis. General symptoms such as fever, weight loss, and night sweats are often accompanied by greatly increased parameters of inflammation. In addition, organ-specific symptoms and/or laboratory abnormalities may provide crucial information. These include ENT symptoms, pulmonary or skin manifestations, as well as signs of renal involvement, such as peripheral edema, rise in blood pressure, hematuria, proteinuria, or a rapid loss of kidney function. If there is reasonable suspicion of disease, patients should be transferred to specialized centers with an interdisciplinary team. In most cases, an immunosuppressive therapy regimen is required, although in recent years the path towards avoiding high glucocorticoid doses with many side effects has been paved by the use of novel therapies.

Corticosteroid-induced myopathy is the most common drug-induced myopathy and could appear during the treatment of diseases where corticosteroids are the mainstay of treatment. We present a clinical case of a patient treated with corticosteroids who presented with proximal muscle weakness, myalgias, marked elevation of muscle enzymes, and acute kidney injury due to rhabdomyolysis. The definitive diagnosis was only possible through a muscle biopsy.
