Peer review is considered by many to be a fundamental component of scientific publishing. In this context, open peer review (OPR) has gained popularity in recent years as a tool to increase transparency, rigor, and inclusivity in research. But how does OPR really affect the review process? How does OPR impact specific groups, such as early career researchers? This editorial explores and discusses these aspects as well as some suggested actions for journals.

Review
Several dietary patterns and nutritional supplements have been linked to the development, progression, and symptomatic treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD). Most of the evidence, at this point, is preliminary and based largely on observational studies. Interventional studies are scarce, so the evidence on effectiveness remains inconclusive. Dietary interventions could, analogous to exercise, potentially have a beneficial effect on disease symptoms as well as on the progression of the disease and should therefore be researched in high quality studies. Further work is also needed to study whether dietary interventions, when applied to an at-risk population, have any potential to postpone the onset of manifest PD. In this paper, we summarize all ongoing clinical trials on dietary interventions in PD. We found 10 ongoing studies, all aimed at a different intervention. These studies are mostly exploratory in nature or represent phase I or phase II trials focusing on safety, biological responses, and symptomatic effects. Taken together, we conclude that research on dietary interventions in persons with PD is still in its early days. The results of the various ongoing trials are expected to generate new hypotheses and will help to shape the agenda for future research on this important topic.

In Part 1 of this Perspective, I discussed basic principles of scientific peer review. In Part 2, I focused specifically on the peer review of manuscripts. Here in , I complete the Perspective by sharing my thoughts on peer review of grant applications. I begin by emphasizing the goals of grant peer review and then describe the two-stage organizational structure involved. The objective of of the process is to establish the scientific merit of the grant proposal. For that phase, I discuss grant review panels, reviewer qualifications and responsibilities, how reviewers are identified and selected, prereview meeting activities, activities during the review panel meeting, grant review criteria and scoring scales, and postmeeting activities. I also note two mechanisms that provide "prepeer review" advice and recommendations for grant applications under development. I then describe the events associated with of the peer review process in which grant funding agencies consider application merit scores (from ) along with other factors including their (the funding agency's) research mission, priority areas of investigation, and available funds. Tips for early career reviewers are discussed next and include questions to ask before accepting a review assignment, the importance of following reviewer guidelines, considerations when working through applications, issues involved in writing the critique, scoring the application, and how to approach evaluating resubmitted grant applications. Finally, I identify options for gaining skills and experience in peer review of grant proposals.

The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation has grown to appreciate the needs of gastroenterology trainees with numerous initiatives designed to provide education, academic opportunities, and mentoring in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in recent years. The editors and staff at (CC360) have launched 2 new initiatives, the Fellow's Corner and the CC360 Editorial Fellowship, to support trainees in gaining knowledge and skills regarding peer review and publication as well as offering guidance on training in IBD and an opportunity for publication in this peer-reviewed, open access, quarterly online journal. These opportunities are described in this manuscript.

Review
Authors have a wide range of journals to which they can submit their report for consideration for publication. One key to getting the journal editors to accept a report is that the manuscript is properly organized and in compliance with the journal's Guide for Authors. For this reason, the single most important undertaking that an author can do before submission is read the journal's Guide for Authors and make sure that the report meets the journal's requirements for publication. If the subject matter is interesting and scientifically rigorous, then a well-written manuscript that complies with the journal's requirements will likely cruise through the peer review process and get accepted for publication. With this in mind, we now break down the elements of a report of original research and describe useful details that enhance the manuscript and leave little to revise.

Review
The growing acceptance of real-world evidence (RWE) in clinical and regulatory decision-making, coupled with increasing availability of health care data and advances in automated analytic approaches, has contributed to a marked expansion of RWE studies of diabetes and other diseases. However, a recent spate of high-profile retractions highlights the need for improvements in the conduct of RWE research as well as in the associated peer review and editorial processes. We review best pharmacoepidemiologic practices and common pitfalls regarding design, measurement, analysis, data validity, appropriateness, and generalizability of RWE studies. To enhance RWE study assessments, we propose that journal editors require 1) study authors to complete RECORD-PE, a reporting guideline for pharmacoepidemiological studies on routinely collected data, 2) availability of predetermined study protocols and analysis plans, 3) inclusion of pharmacoepidemiologists on the peer review team, and 4) provision of detail on data provenance, characterization, and custodianship to facilitate assessment of the data source. We recognize that none of these steps guarantees a high-quality research study. Collectively, however, they permit an informed assessment of whether the study was adequately designed and conducted and whether the data source used was fit for purpose.
