Phototherapeutics is gaining momentum as a mainstream treatment for cancer, with gold-semiconductor nanocomposites showing promise as potent phototherapeutic agents due to their structural tunability, biocompatibility and functional diversity. Such nanohybrids possess plasmonic characteristics in the presence of gold and the catalytic nature of semiconductor units, as well as the unexpected physicochemical properties arising from the contact interface. This perspective provides an overview of the latest research on gold-semiconductor nanocomposites for photodynamic, photothermal and photocatalytic therapy. The relationship between the spatial configuration of these nanohybrids and their practical performance was explored to deliver comprehensive insights and guidance for the design and fabrication of novel composite nanoplatforms to enhance the efficiency of phototherapeutics, promoting the development of nanotechnology-based advanced biomedical applications.

Photoresponsive materials offer excellent spatiotemporal control over biological processes and the emerging phototherapeutic methods are expected to have significant effects on targeted cancer therapies. Recent examples show that combination of photoactivatable approaches with bioorthogonal chemistry enhances the precision of targeted phototherapies and profound implications are foreseen particularly in the treatment of disperse/diffuse tumors. The extra level of on-target selectivity and improved spatial/temporal control considerably intensified related bioorthogonally assisted phototherapy research. The anticipated growth of further developments in the field justifies the timeliness of a brief summary of the state of the art.

Localized scleroderma (LS), also called circumscribed scleroderma or morphea, comprises a heterogeneous group of diseases that can be classified into four subtypes: limited, linear, generalized, and mixed LS. All manifestations are primarily due to chronic progressive fibrosis of the skin or structures close to the skin. Involvement of internal organs or the transition to systemic sclerosis is excluded by definition. A distinction is made between forms that primarily affect the skin (up to the dermis) or that severely involve subcutaneous fat tissue, muscle fascia or muscles. A detailed examination is required for clinical diagnosis. In order to improve comparability of findings, photo documentation and the use of clinical scores should be carried out. For superficial subtypes the use of topical glucocorticosteroids, calcineurin inhibitors or phototherapy is initially recommended, whereas for severe forms with deep involvement or overall therapy refractoriness, the diagnosis should first be expanded and systemic therapy initiated at an early stage. Especially, in cross joint or extremity-dominant forms of linear LS or in cases with head and neck involvement, such as en coup de sabre, Parry-Romberg syndrome and other subtypes with a prominent musculoskeletal affection, an MRI examination should be arranged. Depending on location, an ophthalmological, neurological, orthodontic, rheumatological or orthopedic consultation may be necessary. For systemic therapy, methotrexate alone or in combination with systemic glucocorticosteroids as pulse therapy is recommended as first-line treatment.

Nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems have gained much attention in the treatment of various malignant tumors during the past decades. However, limited tumor penetration of nanodrugs remains a significant hurdle for effective tumor therapy due to the existing biological barriers of tumoral microenvironment. Inspired by bubble machines, here we report the successful fabrication of biomimetic nanodevices capable of in-situ secreting cell-membrane-derived nanovesicles with smaller sizes under near infrared (NIR) laser irradiation for synergistic photothermal/photodynamic therapy. Porous Au nanocages (AuNC) are loaded with phase transitable perfluorohexane (PFO) and hemoglobin (Hb), followed by oxygen pre-saturation and indocyanine green (ICG) anchored 4T1 tumor cell membrane camouflage. Upon slight laser treatment, the loaded PFO undergoes phase transition due to surface plasmon resonance effect produced by AuNC framework, thus inducing the budding of outer cell membrane coating into small-scale nanovesicles based on the pore size of AuNC. Therefore, the hyperthermia-triggered generation of nanovesicles with smaller size, sufficient oxygen supply and anchored ICG results in enhanced tumor penetration for further self-sufficient oxygen-augmented photodynamic therapy and photothermal therapy. The as-developed biomimetic bubble nanomachines with temperature responsiveness show great promise as a potential nanoplatform for cancer treatment.

PURPOSE
Depressive disorders in adolescents are a major health concern associated with developmental, social, and educational impairment. Bright Light Therapy (BLT) is a feasible and effective treatment for depressive disorders in adults, but few controlled trials have been conducted with children or adolescents. This scoping review focuses on the current state of knowledge for BLT in the treatment of adolescent depression. We reviewed the literature for novel data and methodologic approaches using BLT and pediatric and young adult populations.
RECENT FINDINGS
BLT is a tolerable treatment with few side effects. However, there is a marked lack of well-powered studies to support BLT as a treatment for depressive disorders in adolescent populations. Given evidence of tolerability and positive treatment effect on depression in the adult literature, research is needed to establish the efficacy, feasibility, and acceptability of BLT in adolescents.

Immunogenic cell death (ICD) has been a revolutionary modality in cancer treatment since it kills primary tumors and prevents recurrent malignancy simultaneously. ICD represents a particular form of cancer cell death accompanied by production of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) that can be recognized by pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), which enhances infiltration of effector T cells and potentiates antitumor immune responses. Various treatment methods can elicit ICD involving chemo- and radio-therapy, phototherapy and nanotechnology to efficiently convert dead cancer cells into vaccines and trigger the antigen-specific immune responses. Nevertheless, the efficacy of ICD-induced therapies is restrained due to low accumulation in the tumor sites and damage of normal tissues. Thus, researchers have been devoted to overcoming these problems with novel materials and strategies. In this review, current knowledge on different ICD modalities, various ICD inducers, development and application of novel ICD-inducing strategies are summarized. Moreover, the prospects and challenges are briefly outlined to provide reference for future design of novel immunotherapy based on ICD effect.

This observational cohort study aimed to evaluate the association between the duration of neonatal phototherapy and sleep-and-wakefulness states at 1 month, 1.5 years, and 3 years of age. We analysed data from 77,876 infants using the Japan Environment and Children's Study, a nationwide birth cohort study. The participants were divided into three groups: no phototherapy, short phototherapy (1-24 h), and long phototherapy (>24 h). Multiple regression analysis was performed to assess the effect of phototherapy duration on infant sleep at each age after adjusting for potential risk factors. A longer duration of phototherapy was associated with a shorter sleep time over 24 h at 1 month of age (β, -0.62; SE, -0.77 to -0.47) when compared with a shorter duration of, or no, phototherapy, following the adjustment of confounding factors. Contrastingly, the short duration group, when compared with the no phototherapy group, was associated with later sleep onset (β, 0.04; SE, 0.00-0.08) and later sleep offset (β, 0.05; SE, 0.01-0.09) at 1.5 years of age. We concluded that the duration of phototherapy may be transiently associated with sleep duration in infants, as emphasised by the shortening of the total sleep time per 24 h at 1 month of age.

Nanotechnology-based phototherapies have drawn interest in the fight against cancer because of its noninvasiveness, high flexibility, and precision in terms of cancer targeting and drug delivery based on its surface properties and size. Phototherapy has made remarkable development in recent decades. Approaches to phototherapy, which utilize nanomaterials or nanotechnology have emerged to contribute to advances around nanotechnologies in medicine, particularly for cancers. A brief overviews of the development of photodynamic therapy as well as its mechanism in cancer treatment is provided. We emphasize the design of novel nanoparticles utilized in photodynamic therapy while summarizing the representative progress during the recent years. Finally, to forecast important future research in this area, we examine the viability and promise of photodynamic therapy systems based on nanoparticles in clinical anticancer treatment applications and briefly make mention of the elimination of all reactive metabolites pertaining to nano formulations inside living organisms providing insight into clinical mechanistic processes. Future developments and therapeutic prospects for photodynamic treatments are anticipated. Our viewpoints might encourage scientists to create more potent phototherapy-based cancer therapeutic modalities. Cancer phototherapy, including photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT), has been extensively studied in recent years because of its noninvasive properties, high efficiency, improved selectivity, and reduced side effects. Gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) have the advantages of high biocompatibility, high biosafety, excellent photoresponse, and high tumor penetration ability. This review analyzes the use of AuNCs in tumor phototherapy in recent years from three aspects, namely, AuNCs in PDT, AuNCs in PTT, and AuNCs in combination therapy, and presents the high potential of AuNCs in cancer phototherapy. This review aims to provide readers with the unique advantages, diversified application approaches, and bright application prospects of AuNCs in phototherapy and to provide insights into strategies for applying AuNCs to tumor phototherapy.
