BACKGROUND
Evaporation inhibition of water-based space spray insecticides is necessary to prevent the drifting away of fog droplets and the release of insecticidal actives and to prolong suspension time. To address this problem, hygroscopic alcohols, namely propylene glycol and glycerol, were included as adjuvants in water-based d-phenothrin formulations. The performances of glycerol-added formulation (D1) and propylene glycol-added formulation (D2) in terms of droplet size and efficacy against larvae, pupae and adult Aedes aegypti in an open-field environment were examined and compared to the performance of a formulation without adjuvant (negative control).
RESULTS
No significant difference in droplet size was observed between the formulations and fogging methods. The efficacy of cold fogs was significantly higher than thermal fogs for all formulations. D2 was found to be most effective against adult Ae. aegypti, followed by D1 and the negative control. D1 and D2 provided complete knockdown and mortality in adult Ae. aegypti at 10 and 25 m for cold and thermal fogging, respectively. However, all d-phenothrin formulations possessed minimal efficacy on immature Ae. aegypti.
CONCLUSION
The incorporation of non-toxic alcohols as adjuvants in water-based space spray insecticides increased efficacy against adult Ae. aegypti, a major vector for dengue. Propylene glycol was discovered to induce higher adulticidal efficacy than glycerol. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Mealworm-flour-formulated flour-based products have gained increasing attention; however, their textural properties need to be improved. Propylene glycol alginate (PGA) is a commercial food additive with excellent emulsifying and stabilizing capabilities. We evaluated the effects of adding three commercially available PGAs (0.3% , as food additive) on the properties of 10% concentration of mealworm-flour-formulated bread and steamed bread. The results showed that, compared with the control (2.17 mL/g), three PGA brands (Q, M, and Y) significantly increased the specific volume of the bread to 3.34, 3.40, and 3.36 mL/g, respectively. Only PGA from brand Q significantly improved the specific volumes of bread and steamed bread. The color of the bread was affected by the Maillard reaction. The addition of PGAs also augmented the moisture content of the fresh bread crumbs and steamed bread crumbs. All three PGAs improved the textural properties of bread and steamed bread. During storage, PGA addition delayed the staling of bread and steamed bread. In summary, our study showed that the addition of 0.3% PGA from three different producers improved bread properties, with PGA from brand Q having the most substantial effect. PGA had a more substantial effect on bread than steamed bread. Our results provide a theoretical basis to guide the development of insect-formulated flour-based products.

Quantification of skin penetration of caffeine and propylene glycol applied topically in a mixture by tailored multivariate curve resolution-alternating least squares of depth-resolved Raman spectra.
The quantitative determination of topically applied substances in the skin is severely limited and represents a challenging task. The porcine skin ex vivo was topically treated with a gel containing caffeine (CF) and propylene glycol (PG), and depth-resolved Raman spectra were recorded with two confocal Raman microscopes. We applied a novel tailored multivariate curve resolution-alternating least squares method to the selected spectral regions (512-604 and 778-1148 cm ) of gel-treated skin and quantitatively determined the concentrations of CF and PG in the stratum corneum (SC). The highest concentration of CF (181 mg/cm ) was found at the surface, while PG (384 mg/cm ) was found at 10% SC depth, indicating the formation of a reservoir at the superficial SC. The concentrations of CF and PG decreased monotonically and reached the detection limit at ≈60% and ≈80% SC depth, respectively, indicating that neither permeate the SC.

Safe and Effective Management of Dry Eye Symptoms with Hydroxypropyl Guar and Hyaluronic Acid Dual-Polymer Lubricating Eye Drops: A Review of Preclinical and Clinical Studies.
Dry eye disease (DED) is a chronic ocular surface disorder often characterized by decreased tear production and rapid tear evaporation that affect tear film stability and homeostasis. The common symptoms of DED include ocular discomfort, visual disturbances, dryness, and itching. Artificial tears are the mainstay of DED management and supplement one or more layers of the tear film. Artificial tear drops are available as a combination of viscosity-enhancing agents (demulcents/lubricants), humectants, and buffers either with or without preservatives. Artificial tears, as a combination of components (polymers/demulcents/viscosity-enhancing agents), can provide synergistic action compared with a single component for the management of multifactorial signs and symptoms of DED. This review describes the formulation components, physicochemical properties, mechanism of action, and summary of preclinical and clinical evidence on the hydroxypropyl guar-hyaluronic acid (HPG-HA) dual-polymer lubricant eye drops (SYSTANE HYDRATION). The dual-polymer eye drops consist of dual demulcents (propylene glycol and polyethylene glycol 400) and the polymers hydroxypropyl guar (HPG) and hyaluronic acid (HA). When instilled on the ocular surface, HPG forms a cross-linked gel matrix with borate ions that prolongs the retention of demulcents, thus providing long-lasting lubrication and ocular surface protection. Additionally, HA stabilizes the tear film, increases corneal wettability, and reduces friction during blinks due to its hygroscopic and viscoelastic properties. Preclinical evidence demonstrates that HPG HA dual-polymer lubricant eye drops provide protection against desiccation by cell hydration and surface retention, cell barrier protection, prolonged lubrication, and promotion of corneal re-epithelialization. Clinical scientific evidence demonstrates that HPG HA dual-polymer lubricant eye drops are safe and effective in the management of DED. Specifically, they reduce the signs and symptoms of DED, reduce dry eye symptoms post-cataract surgery, and improve tear film quality in healthy eyes.

Reversible thermochromism presents depth at low temperatures and brightness at high temperatures, which is not conducive to the application of the passive energy-saving and shading effect. Here, we propose an innovative strategy for unconventional reversible thermochromic energy-storage flexible wood films (FT-PCMs-2) by the contribution of polyvinyl alcohol/propylene glycol (PVA/PG). Upon heating, the FT-PCMs-2 changes from light red/green to dark red/green, in contrast to the color change of the non-flexible composites without PVA/PG. The FT-PCMs-2 has good flexibility, mechanical strength and thermal stability. Among them, MSR-DEW-6PVA and MSG-DEW-6PVA have better comprehensive properties, including suitable phase change temperatures (38.6 °C and 37.2 °C), high latent heat values (59.79 J g and 73.02 J g), and low supercooling degrees (2 °C and 0.6 °C). FTIR, XRD and SEM analysis show that the binary fatty acid eutectics were successfully loaded into the eucalyptus fibre skeleton with physical interaction with PVA/PG. In addition, MSR-DEW-6PVA and MSG-DEW-6PVA have photothermal conversion rates of 48.3% and 36%, good cycling stability and anti-leakage performance after 50 cycles, and have promising applications in the fields of building energy saving, intelligent windows and decoration.

Intrinsically stretchable organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have attracted significant attention for use in next-generation displays. However, most studies conducted to date have focused on how to make fluorescent materials stretchable, utilizing singlet excitons with a theoretical internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 25%. Although phosphorescent materials have a high theoretical IQE of 100%, no previous work has attempted to develop stretchable phosphorescent light-emitting materials. In this work, we designed a solution-processable and intrinsically stretchable phosphorescent light-emitting layer (EML) by blending various additives together with a mixture of a polymer host, poly(9-vinyl carbazole) (PVK), and a small-molecule emitting dopant, tris(2-phenylpyridine)iridium(III) (Ir(ppy)). The poly(ethylene glycol)--poly(propylene glycol)--poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-PPG-PEG) additive significantly improved the stretchability (∼100% strain), brightness (∼5400 cd/m), and efficiency (∼25.3 cd/A) of the EML compared with a conventional phosphorescent EML (approximately 3% strain, 3750 cd/m, and 12.1 cd/A). Furthermore, by changing the emitting dopant in the EML, we could control the red, green, and blue emission colors, with increasing mechanical and electrical properties of the EML. These results highlight the promising potential of the novel blend system using phosphorescent materials and additives for application in highly stretchable and efficient OLEDs.

Dandruff, or pityriasis capitis simplex, is a common scalp condition associated with excessive flaking and scaling of the epidermal tissue. Other features include irregular corneocyte turnover, irritation, itching and an impaired skin barrier function. Previously we reported the characterization of climbazole (CBZ), an antifungal agent used in the management of dandruff. Skin permeation of CBZ from neat solvents was also investigated. In the present work we evaluated CBZ permeation in human skin in vitro from more complex formulations that better represent products used by consumers. The various systems studied were composed of propylene glycol (PG), Transcutol®P (TC), octyl salicylate (OSal) and isopropyl alcohol (IPA). As well as measurement of skin uptake and penetration of CBZ, where possible, the skin retention and permeation of the various solvents was also determined. All vehicles promoted skin permeation of CBZ but no significant differences in amount permeated were evident between the binary vehicles (PG:TC, TC:OSal) and the ternary vehicle studied (PG:IPA:OSal). The binary vehicles generally promoted more skin uptake of CBZ compared with the neat solvents (PG, TC, OSal) studied previously. Permeation and skin extraction of CBZ from the PG:TC vehicles increased with increasing PG content; a similar trend was evident for the PG:IPA:OSal systems. New methods were developed and validated for measurement of PG, TC and OSal. Analysis of the individual solvents indicated that PG permeation was also independent of the amounts of other solvents in the binary or ternary systems. Consistent with previous findings higher proportions of TC permeated compared with PG for the PG:TC binary systems; TC also permeated the skin more rapidly than PG from these vehicles. For OSal, skin extraction was generally higher for TC:OSal compared with the PG:IPA:OSal vehicle. However, increasing the content of OSal did not appear to influence CBZ skin uptake nor permeation. Interestingly, the effects of the various PG:TC vehicles on CBZ skin delivery contrast with results we previous reported for the same systems for a different active. This confirms that with reference to skin permeation, formulation effects and/or skin penetration enhancement should be expected to vary and may not be predicted for specific vehicles.

The aim of this study was to develop and characterize microemulsion formulations using penetration enhancers as potential transdermal delivery systems for risperidone. Initially, a simple formulation of risperidone in Propylene Glycol (PG) was prepared as a control formulation, together with formulations incorporating various penetration enhancers, alone and/or in combination, and also microemulsion formulations with various chemical penetration enhancers, were prepared and all were evaluated for risperidone transdermal delivery. An ex-vivo permeation study was carried out using human cadaver skin and vertical glass Franz diffusion cells to compare all the microemulsion formulations. The microemulsion prepared from oleic acid as the oil (15%), Tween 80 (15%) as the surfactant and isopropyl alcohol (20%) as the co-surfactant, and water (50%) showed higher permeation with a flux value of 32.50±3.60 ug/hr/sq.cm, a globule size of 2.96±0.01 nm, a polydispersity index of 0.33±0.02 and pH of 4.95. This novel in vitro research disclosed that an optimized microemulsion formulated using penetration enhancers was able to increase permeation of risperidone by 14-fold compared to the control formulation. The data suggested that microemulsions may be useful in the delivery of risperidone via the transdermal route.

BACKGROUND
Electronic cigarette (e-cig) vaping has increased in the past decade in the US, and e-cig use is misleadingly marketed as a safe cessation for quitting smoking. The main constituents in e-liquid are humectants, such as propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerine (VG), but different flavoring chemicals are also used. However, the toxicology profile of flavored e-cigs in the pulmonary tract is lacking. We hypothesized that menthol and tobacco-flavored e-cig (nicotine-free) exposure results in inflammatory responses and dysregulated repair in lung fibroblast and epithelium.
METHOD
We exposed lung fibroblast (HFL-1) and epithelium (BEAS-2B) to Air, PG/VG, menthol flavored, or tobacco-flavored e-cig, and determined the cytotoxicity, inflammation, and wound healing ability in 2D cells and 3D microtissue chip models.
RESULTS
After exposure, HFL-1 showed decreased cell number with increased IL-8 levels in the tobacco flavor group compared to air. BEAS-2B also showed increased IL-8 secretion after PG/VG and tobacco flavor exposure, while menthol flavor exposure showed no change. Both menthol and tobacco-flavored e-cig exposure showed decreased protein abundance of type 1 collagen α 1 (COL1A1), α-smooth-muscle actin (αSMA), and fibronectin as well as decreased gene expression level of αSMA (Acta2) in HFL-1. After tobacco flavor e-cig exposure, HFL-1 mediated wound healing and tissue contractility were inhibited. Furthermore, BEAS-2B exposed to menthol flavor showed significantly decreased tight junction gene expressions, such as CDH1, OCLN, and TJP1.
CONCLUSION
Overall, tobacco-flavored e-cig exposure induces inflammation in both epithelium and fibroblasts, and tobacco-flavored e-cig inhibits wound healing ability in fibroblasts.

The study is dedicated to the consideration of lower alkyl ethers of glycerol as potential components of low-melting technical fluids (e.g., heat transfer fluids, hydraulic fluids, aircraft de-icing fluids, etc.). Four isomeric mixtures of glycerol ethers (GMME-monomethyl; GDME-dimethyl; GMEE-monoethyl; GDEE-diethyl) were synthesized from epichlorohydrin and methanol/ethanol in the presence of sodium and subjected to detailed characterization as pure compounds and as aqueous solutions (30-90 vol%). The temperature and concentration dependencies of density, viscosity, cloud point, boiling range, specific heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and rubber swelling were obtained. On the basis of the data obtained, a comparison was made between the aqueous solutions of glycerol ethers and of other common bases for low-melting liquids (glycerol, ethylene glycol, and propylene glycol). Pure glycerol ethers could potentially be used as technical fluids in a very wide temperature range-from -114 to 150 °C. It was further demonstrated that in low temperature applications (e.g., in low-temperature chiller systems) the glycerol-ether-based aqueous heat transfer fluids could provide enhanced efficiency when compared to the glycerol- or propylene-glycol-based ones due to their lower viscosities and favorable environmental properties.
