AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
Periodontitis is a chronic disease affecting the supporting tissues of the teeth and exhibits bidirectional relation with systemic diseases. This study aims to determine the association between chronic periodontitis and erythrocyte functional measures: total red blood cells (RBCs), hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) by systematic review and meta-analysis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
A systematic search of the electronic databases PUBMED, OVID, Embase, Web on Science, and Google Scholar was undertaken from inception to July 2022. English language studies that evaluated the erythrocyte functional measures in periodontitis and health were selected. Other review reports, letters/opinion articles, studies without a definition of periodontitis, and the concomitant presence of systemic conditions (diabetes, kidney disease, cancer) were excluded. Two reviewers determined full-text eligibility in a blinded process. Meta-Essentials software was used to generate forest plots and to determine heterogeneity and publication bias.
RESULTS
Twenty-six studies involving 1082 patients with chronic periodontitis and 980 healthy controls were analyzed. Pooled results showed lower Hb concentration (Hedges' = -1.16; 95% confidence intervals [CI], -1.7 to -0.62), RBC counts (Hedges' = -0.85; 95% CI, -1.31 to -0.38) and packed cell volume (-0.56; 95% CI, -1.02 to -0.11) in patients with chronic periodontitis.
CONCLUSION
This meta-analysis showed a decreasing trend in the hematological parameters, including hemoglobin concentration, number of erythrocytes, and hematocrit in patients with chronic periodontitis compared to healthy controls.

Frequently, adolescents exhibit instances of immature necrotic teeth, which are identifiable by their slender root walls and unclosed root tips. The lack of a natural narrowing near the root's end creates difficulty when using standard endodontic procedures, making the effective sealing of the immature root canal difficult or impractical. Revascularization therapy surfaces as a prospective strategy for addressing the management of undeveloped, non-vital, immature, necrotic teeth. Notwithstanding this, apexification continues to hold prominence in the preferences of clinicians owing to its perceived predictability in treatment outcomes. A systematic investigation was conducted involving various search engines and databases, covering the period from 2001 to 2023. The main aim of this investigation was to find randomized clinical trials that compared the efficacy of revascularization therapy to apexification for treating immature necrotic teeth. The evaluation included a thorough examination of both clinical and radiographic outcomes assessing the success rates and complications. Out of the 850 identified articles, 15 studies were chosen for comprehensive analysis. Notable dissimilarities were not identified between the revascularization therapy and apexification groups concerning parameters such as rates of periapical healing, overall effectiveness/invalidation, and apical closure. However, concentrating on measurable factors, it became clear that the revascularization treatment group displayed a notable rise in root length compared to the apexification group. Both revascularization endodontic therapy and apexification demonstrated effectiveness in addressing periapical periodontitis healing and open apex closure. Pulp revascularization stood out for its notable efficacy in enhancing root elongation and thickening, all while having a reduced likelihood of treatment being deemed ineffective overall.

Targeting inflammatory pathways is considered a common strategy to control type 2 diabetes (T2D) and periodontitis. This overview was to validate systemic antibiotics as an adjuvant to scaling and root planing (SRP) for the treatments of periodontal patients with T2D. Literature searches were conducted using Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane, and EMBASE. Randomized trials comparing SRP and systemic antibiotics on glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and probing pocket depth (PPD) in adults with T2D and periodontitis were analyzed using network meta-analysis and meta-regression. At 3-month postintervention, meta-analyses of 16 studies revealed that SRP and SRP plus systemic antibiotics (SRPa) had similar significant effects in reducing HbA1c levels of - 0.72% and - 0.96% respectively. While SRP and SRPa also, respectively, reduced PPD of - 0.67 and - 0.89 mm, SRPa showed a better reduction than SRP. At 6-month postintervention, meta-analyses of 7 trials revealed that only SRP was effective in reducing HbA1c levels (-0.29%) but not SRPa. Although both SRP and SRPa still significantly reduced PPD by - 0.56 and - 0.81 mm, respectively, there was no difference between them. The current overview suggested that routine SRP alone is highly recommended for patients with T2D and periodontitis, since systemic antibiotics as an adjuvant provide a rather short-term effect.

The aim of this study is to systematically appraise the evidence on available full thickness 3D gingival and mucosal models (3D culture in scaffold base system) and their application in periodontal and peri-implant research. This study involved a systematic review of twenty-two studies obtained from searching from five electronic databases: MEDLINE-OVID, EMBASE, EBSCOhost, Web of Science Core Collection and LILACS, as well as a hand search of eligible articles up to September 2022. A total of 2338 studies were initially identified, after removal of duplicates (573), abstracts/title selection (1765), and full text screening (95), twenty-two studies were included, thirty-seven models were identified. Several cellular markers were reported by the studies included. The expression of keratinocytes differentiation markers (K4, K5, K10, K13, K14, K16, K17, K18, K19, involucrin, laminin5), proliferation marker (Ki67, CD90), and vimentin, Type I, II and IV collagen produced by fibroblasts were investigated in thirty models. No quantitative analyses were performed, and results of the review confirmed a substantial level of heterogeneity across experiments. In conclusion, there is currently insufficient evidence to conclude that the available 3D gingival and mucosal models can entirely recapitulate the human gingival tissue/mucosa and provide a useful research tool for periodontal and peri-implant research. This review also highlighted the lack of a standardized protocol to construct and characterize 3D gingival models. A new protocol is proposed for the characterization of in vitro gingival models for future research.

(1) Background: The relationship between periodontitis and systemic pathologies continues to grow. Recently, the presence of periodontal pathogens has been linked to an increased risk of pancreatic cancer (PC) and its mortality. Thus, a systematic review is needed to identify whether an association between the two diseases can be established. The objective of this review is to elucidate the mechanisms responsible for this association. (2) Methods: A systematic review was carried out using three databases (PubMed, Embase and Scopus) with the following keywords "Periodontitis AND pancreatic cancer". A total of 653 articles were retrieved; before selection and screening, the inclusion and exclusion criteria were defined, resulting in a total of 13 articles being included in the review. (3) Results: The increase in low-grade systemic inflammation, pH changes, and the cytotoxicity of certain periodontopathogenic bacteria were found in the scientific literature reviewed as mechanisms linking periodontitis with the risk of PC. (4) Conclusions: Through this systematic review, we have seen how periodontitis can be related to PC and how it worsens its prognosis. Knowing the behavior of periodontopathogenic bacteria and the influence they have on our immune and inflammatory system may help to achieve an interdisciplinary approach to both pathologies.

Bone regeneration is often required concomitant with implant placement to treat a bone fenestration, a dehiscence, and for contouring. This systematic review assessed the impact of different biomaterials employed for guided bone regeneration (GBR) simultaneous to implant placement on the stability of radiographic peri-implant bone levels at ≥12 months of follow-up (focused question 1), as well as on bone defect dimension (width/height) changes at re-assessment after ≥4 months (focused question 2). Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and controlled clinical trials (CCTs) that compared different biomaterials for GBR were considered. A Bayesian network meta-analysis (NMA) was performed using a random-effects model. A ranking probability between treatments was obtained, as well as an estimation of the surface under the cumulative ranking value (SUCRA). Overall, whenever the biological principle of GBR was followed, regeneration occurred in a predictable way, irrespective of the type of biomaterial used. A lower efficacy of GBR treatments was suggested for initially large defects, despite the trend did not reach statistical significance. Regardless of the biomaterial employed, a certain resorption of the augmented bone was observed overtime. While GBR was shown to be a safe and predictable treatment, several complications (including exposure, infection, and soft tissue dehiscence) were reported, which tend to be higher when using cross-linked collagen membranes.

Oral Complications Associated with the Piercing of Oral and Perioral Tissues and the Corresponding Degree of Awareness among Public and Professionals: A Systematic Review.
This study systematically reviews the literature to evaluate the potential relationships between oral/perioral piercing and consequent oral complications in the corresponding society. The second objective was determining public/professional sectors' awareness of the subject. This research followed PRISMA and Cochrane guidelines for conducting systematic reviews and searching scientific databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, and Google Scholar, until April 2023. Cross-sectional, cohort, and case-control studies in English were deemed eligible. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using proper quality assessment guidelines. Of the 965 initial articles retrieved, 34 were considered suitable for qualitative synthesis after screening procedures and removing duplicates and irrelevant records. There appears to be an imbalance between the general public's low and dentists' high awareness. This draws attention to the shortage of professional and societal knowledge-sharing and education initiatives. Women were more than twice as likely as men to have oral piercings. Piercing usage had a low incidence among a cohort of students with a mean age of 16. Merely circumstantial evidence has indicated a plausible correlation between oral and perioral piercings and the emergence of secondary bacterial and fungal colonization, particularly periodontopathogenic bacteria and Candida albicans. Furthermore, several adverse consequences have been observed linked to various piercings-such as lip and tongue piercings. These include caries, gingivitis/periodontitis, dental fractures, enamel chipping/cracks, plaque buildup, bone loss, bleeding, inflammation, and swelling. Given the risks involved and the complications that might impair oral health, the prevalence of oral piercings is alarming. As a result, public health authorities need to firmly support initiatives to raise awareness of the risks associated with oral/perioral piercings. For piercers to enhance their expertise in this field, professional training is necessary because there is a shortage of knowledge on the possible adverse effects of piercings.

BACKGROUND
The purpose of this study is to investigate the long-term efficacy and stability of Miniscrew-assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion (MARPE), including its primary outcomes, namely the nasomaxillary complex transverse skeletal and dental expansion, and related secondary outcomes.
METHODS
Electronic databases and manual literature searches, up to October 31, 2022, were performed. The eligibility criteria were the following: studies on patients with transverse maxillary deficiency treated with MARPE in adults and adolescents over 13.5 years of age.
RESULTS
Ultimately, twelve articles were included in the analysis, one prospective and eleven retrospective observational studies. Five studies showed a moderate risk of bias, while the remaining seven studies were at a serious risk of bias. The GRADE quality of evidence was very low. MARPE is an effective treatment modality for transverse maxillary deficiency (mean success rate: 93.87%). Patients showed increased mean in the skeletal and dental transverse expansion. The basal bone composition, mean alveolar bone and mean dental expansion accounted for 48.85, 7.52, and 43.63% of the total expansion, respectively. There was a certain degree of skeletal and dental relapse over time. MARPE could also cause dental, alveolar, and periodontal side effects, and have an impact on other craniofacial bones, upper airway, and facial soft tissue.
CONCLUSIONS
MARPE is an effective treatment for transverse maxillary deficiency, with a high success rate and a certain degree of skeletal and dental relapse over time.

BACKGROUND
Oral conditions such as gingivitis and periodontitis are correlated with adverse pregnancy outcomes such as preeclampsia, preterm birth and low birth weight. Oral health-related unfavourable beliefs can have negative influences on oral health behaviours including hesitation in accessing preventative dental treatments and dental service utilization. The objective of this systematic review was to examine unfavourable beliefs that expectant or new mothers frequently hold about oral health and the safety of dental care during pregnancy.
METHODS
An electronic database search on PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, and MEDLINE (Ovid) followed by forward and backward citation tracing of the included studies was conducted. All English primary studies regardless of the year of publication were independently screened by two reviewers to identify studies addressing unfavourable beliefs about oral health and dental care during pregnancy. The CLARITY tool was applied to assess the risk of bias in the included studies.
RESULTS
Out of a total of 5766 records, 39 quantitative and six qualitative studies met the inclusion criteria. The commonly held unfavourable beliefs were regarding the safety of dental services utilization and dental treatment procedures, the adverse impacts of pregnancy on oral health, and oral hygiene necessity during pregnancy. The most discussed unfavourable beliefs included "pregnant women lose their teeth because of pregnancy" (n = 18), "dental treatments are not safe and harm the fetus" (n = 17), and "the developing baby absorbs calcium from the mother's teeth" (n = 14).
CONCLUSIONS
Unfavourable beliefs about oral health and dental care utilization are common among pregnant women and new mothers. The literature suggests that a low level of oral health knowledge and seeking information from social networks can contribute to such beliefs. This has implications for health promotion.

: More than a billion people worldwide suffer from chronic periodontitis. The primary etiological factor of periodontal diseases is dental plaque and the bacteria it contains, particularly , , , , and . Zinc, owing to its antibacterial properties, can be employed in periodontology. The objective of this review was to analyze scientific literature that examines the effects of zinc on periopathogens. : A systematic review protocol of scientific literature was designed following PRISMA recommendations. Data search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect databases. Full-text articles in English that examine the effects of zinc on periopathogens and were published between 2011 and 2021 were included. Fifteen articles were included in the analysis based on inclusion criteria. ZnO exhibited antibacterial activity against and ( < 0.001). The minimum inhibitory concentration against was 10 μg/mL. ZnO demonstrated a significant antibacterial effect, as evidenced by inhibition zones of 15.10 mm for , 13.36 mm for , 12.98 mm for , and 14.01 mm for Zn (II)-based polymers inhibited the and genes of . Titanium dental implants coated with ZnO effectively disrupted the cell walls of and . ZnO inhibited the growth of within 2 h and the growth of and within 3 h. ZnO exhibited nontoxic effects, and concentrations up to 0.8 mg/L increased cell survival rates by up to 90%. The analysis of the literature confirms the antibacterial action of zinc against periodontal pathogenic bacteria. At low concentrations, these substances do not exhibit cytotoxic effects on fibroblasts.
