Polysomnography (PSG) is the reference standard of sleep measurement, but is burdensome for the participant and labor intensive. Affordable electroencephalography (EEG)-based wearables are easy to use and are gaining popularity, yet selecting the most suitable device is a challenge for clinicians and researchers. In this systematic review, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of available EEG-based wearables to measure human sleep. For each wearable, an overview will be provided regarding validated population and reported measurement properties. A systematic search was conducted in the databases OVID MEDLINE, Embase.com and CINAHL. A machine learning algorithm (ASReview) was utilized to screen titles and abstracts for eligibility. In total, 60 papers were selected, covering 34 unique EEG-based wearables. Feasibility studies indicated good tolerance, high compliance, and success rates. The 42 included validation studies were conducted across diverse populations and showed consistently high accuracy in sleep staging detection. Therefore, the recent advancements in EEG-based wearables show great promise as alternative for PSG and for at-home sleep monitoring. Users should consider factors like user-friendliness, comfort, and costs, as these devices vary in features and pricing, impacting their suitability for individual needs.

BACKGROUND
Dermatological conditions, especially when severe, can lead to sleep disturbances that affect a patient's quality of life. However, limited research exists on the efficacy of treatments for improving sleep parameters in skin conditions.
OBJECTIVE
The objective was to perform a systematic review of the literature on dermatological conditions and the treatments available for improving sleep parameters.
METHODS
A literature review was performed using the PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane, and ClinicalTrials.gov databases from 1945 to 2021. After filtering based on our exclusion criteria, studies were graded using the SORT (Strength of Recommendation Taxonomy) algorithm, and only those receiving a grade of "2" or better were included.
RESULTS
In total, 25 treatment studies (n=11,025) assessing sleep parameters related to dermatological conditions were found. Dupilumab appeared to be the best-supported and most effective treatment for improving sleep in atopic dermatitis (AD) but had frequent adverse effects. Topical treatments for AD were mostly ineffective, but procedural treatments showed some promise. Treatments for other conditions appeared efficacious.
CONCLUSIONS
The evaluation of sleep parameter changes in dermatological treatments is predominantly restricted to AD. Systemic interventions such as dupilumab and procedural interventions were the most efficacious. Sleep changes in other dermatoses were limited by a paucity of available studies. The inclusion of a sleep assessment component to a broader range of dermatological treatment studies is warranted.

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is a highly prevalent yet underestimated disorder caused by the complete or partial obstruction of the upper airways. Although polysomnography is the gold standard for OSAS diagnosis, there is an active search for easily accessible biomarkers of disease presence and severity, particularly those reflecting morphological changes in specific blood cells. We investigated the associations between the presence and severity of OSAS, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment, mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet distribution width (PDW), routinely assessed as part of the complete blood count. From 262 retrieved records from PubMed, the Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar, 31 manuscripts were selected for a final analysis, 30 investigating MPV and 15 investigating PDW. MPV was not statistically different between OSAS patients and healthy controls; however, it progressively increased with disease severity. By contrast, OSAS patients had significantly higher PDW values than controls (SMD = 0.40, 95% CI: 0.25 to 0.56; ˂ 0.001), and the difference increased with disease severity. In a univariate meta-regression, there were significant associations between the MPV and publication year, the apnoea-hypopnea index, and diabetes mellitus, while no associations were observed with the PDW. No significant between-group differences were observed in the subgroup analyses. These data suggest that PDW, and to a lesser extent, MPV, are potential biomarkers of OSAS and require further research to ascertain their pathophysiological significance (PROSPERO, CRD42023459413).

Several studies have examined the frequency of sleep apnoea (SA) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), reporting different prevalence rates. Our systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to define the clinical penetrance of SA in CKD and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients.
METHODS
Ovid-MEDLINE and PubMed databases were explored up to 5 June 2023 to identify studies providing SA prevalence in CKD and ESKD patients assessed by different diagnostic methods, either sleep questionnaires or respiration monitoring equipment [such as polysomnography (PSG), type III portable monitors or other diagnostic tools]. Single-study data were pooled using the random-effects model. The Chi and Cochrane-I tests were used to assess the presence of heterogeneity, which was explored performing sensitivity and/or subgroup analyses.
RESULTS
A cumulative analysis from 32 single-study data revealed a prevalence of SA of 57% [95% confidence interval (CI) 42%-71%] in the CKD population, whereas a prevalence of 49% (95% CI 47%-52%) was found pooling data from 91 studies in ESKD individuals. The prevalence of SA using instrumental sleep monitoring devices, including classical PSG and type III portable sleep monitors, was 62% (95% CI 52%-72%) and 56% (95% CI 42%-69%) in CKD and ESKD populations, respectively. Sleep questionnaires revealed a prevalence of 33% (95% CI 16%-49%) and 39% (95% CI 30%-49%).
CONCLUSIONS
SA is commonly seen in both non-dialysis CKD and ESKD patients. Sleep-related questionnaires underestimated the presence of SA in this population. This emphasizes the need to use objective diagnostic tools to identify such a syndrome in kidney disease.

BACKGROUND
Abnormal amyloid β (Aβ) deposits in the brain are a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Insufficient sleep duration and poor sleep quality are risk factors for developing AD. Sleep may play a role in Aβ regulation, but the magnitude of the relationship between sleep and Aβ deposition remains unclear. This systematic review examines the relationship between sleep (i.e., duration and efficiency) with Aβ deposition in later-life adults.
METHODS
A search of PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, and PsycINFO generated 5,005 published articles. Fifteen studies met the inclusion criteria for qualitative syntheses; thirteen studies for quantitative syntheses related to sleep duration and Aβ; and nine studies for quantitative syntheses related to sleep efficiency and Aβ.
RESULTS
Mean ages of the samples ranged from 63 to 76 years. Studies measured Aβ using cerebrospinal fluid, serum, and positron emission tomography scans with two tracers: Carbone 11-labeled Pittsburgh compound B or fluorine 18-labeled. Sleep duration was measured subjectively using interviews or questionnaires, or objectively using polysomnography or actigraphy. Study analyses accounted for demographic and lifestyle factors. Based on 13 eligible articles, our synthesis demonstrated that the average association between sleep duration and Aβ was not statistically significant (Fisher's Z = -0.055, 95% CI = -0.117 ~ 0.008). We found that longer self-report sleep duration is associated with lower Aβ (Fisher's Z = -0.062, 95% CI = -0.119 ~ -0.005), whereas the objectively measured sleep duration was not associated with Aβ (Fisher's Z = 0.002, 95% CI = -0.108 ~ 0.113). Based on 9 eligible articles for sleep efficiency, our synthesis also demonstrated that the average association between sleep efficiency and Aβ was not statistically significant (Fisher's Z = 0.048, 95% CI = -0.066 ~ 0.161).
CONCLUSION
The findings from this review suggest that shorter self-reported sleep duration is associated with higher Aβ levels. Given the heterogeneous nature of the sleep measures and outcomes, it is still difficult to determine the exact relationship between sleep and Aβ. Future studies with larger sample sizes should focus on comprehensive sleep characteristics and use longitudinal designs to better understand the relationship between sleep and AD.

OBJECTIVES
A meta-analysis was used to explore the characteristic changes in objective sleep structure of patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) compared with cognitively healthy older adults.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
PubMed, EMBAS, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched until November 2023. A literature quality evaluation was performed according to the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, and a meta-analysis was performed by RevMan 5.3 software.
RESULTS
Fifteen studies with 771 participants were finally included. Compared with normal control groups, patients with MCI had a decreased total sleep time by 34.44 min, reduction in sleep efficiency by 7.96 %, increased waking after sleep onset by 19.61 min, and increased sleep latency by 6.97 min. Ten included studies showed that the patients with MCI had increased N1 sleep by 2.72 % and decreased N3 sleep by 0.78 %; however, there was no significant difference between the MCI and control groups in percentage of N2 sleep. Moreover, Twelve included studies reported the MCI groups had shorter REM sleep of 2.69 %.
CONCLUSION
Our results provide evidence of abnormal sleep architecture in patients with MCI. As a "plastic state," abnormal sleep architecture may be a promising therapeutic target for slowing cognitive decline and dementia prevention.

BACKGROUND
The prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is suggested to differ according to different age groups. While its prevalence has been extensively investigated among middle-aged and old individuals, very few studies have summarized its prevalence among young adults. The present study aimed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of OSA prevalence among healthy adults aged 18-30 years in the general population.
METHODS
A search of Embase, Medline, and Web of Science databases for articles reporting the prevalence of OSA among young adults confirmed by objective diagnostic methods was completed by two reviewers. Studies identified and included in the review were summarized qualitatively. Additionally, a meta-analysis of prevalence rates was conducted using a random effects model.
RESULTS
11 articles out of 5898 met the inclusion criteria and were included in the meta-analysis. The diagnostic thresholds, scoring criteria, and the type of used device varied substantially among all the studies. We found that the pooled prevalence of OSA among young adults was 16% (CI 95%, 8-29%, I = 92%, τ = 1.47).
CONCLUSION
The prevalence of OSA among young adults was found to be ~16%. However, a few factors diverged prevalence between the studies, such as hypopnea definition, AHI threshold, and type of device. Most of the studies included examined healthy volunteers, suggesting that the disease burden may be underestimated. Findings from our review highlight the need to include OSA-related assessment and intervention in the overall health care of young adults. By early detection and offered treatment, further complications related to comorbidities may be omitted.

OBJECTIVE
To study the role of adenotonsillectomy (ADT) for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children with mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS).
METHODS
A systematic review were performed following the PRISMA guideline. PubMed and Embase were searched for studies regarding adenotonsillectomy for OSA in children with MPS. The MINOR Score were applied for quality assessment of the included studies.
RESULTS
Nineteen studies were eligible for inclusion: fifteen were retrospective and four prospective. A total of 1406 subjects were included. The samples size varied from 2 to 336, the male to female ratio is 1.2 and mean age varied from 2.4 to 11 years. Overall, 56.2 % (IC 95%: 53.6-58.8) of the included subjects underwent ADT. MPS I and II are the two most operated types. Three studies, including 50 children, reported improvement in polysomnographic parameters after surgery. Two authors described the duration of follow-up: 8.4 and 9.8 years, respectively.
CONCLUSIONS
More than half of children with MPS underwent ADT for the treatment of OSA, although few evidence demonstrated improvement in term of polysomnographic parameters. The two types of MPS most involved are type I and II. Considering the disease progression and anesthetic risks, multidisciplinary management may help identify the subgroup of children with MPS who benefit from ADT for the treatment of OSA.

BACKGROUND
The relationship between subclinical hypothyroidism (SHYPO) and sleep disturbances is still poorly investigated. This systematic review aims to critically appraise the existing literature to provide more insights in understanding whether SHYPO favors sleep disturbances or it is the sleep disturbance per se that affects the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis regulation.
METHODS
Original studies on sleep quality and duration in patients with SHYPO were searched in the PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science and Scopus databases. Two reviewers independently screened articles for inclusion, extracted data, and assessed the quality of included studies.
RESULTS
Eight studies, including 2916 patients with SHYPO and 18,574 healthy controls, were retrieved. An overall agreement (7 out of 8 studies), about a positive correlation between decreased sleep quality and/or duration and SHYPO was observed. Five studies investigated sleep quality through self-reported surveys; only two studies explored both subjective and objective assessment of sleep quality with actigraphy (n = 1) or polysomnography (n = 1); finally, one study assessed subjective evaluation of sleep quality through a single question regarding the number of sleeping hours. A high level of heterogeneity among studies was manifest due to differences in population source, sleep measure assessment and criteria for diagnosing SHYPO.
DISCUSSION
Overall, the existing literature data suggest a link between SHYPO and sleep disturbances, but further studies on larger populations of patients with homogeneous study designs and outcomes are warranted.

BACKGROUND
Despite polysomnography (PSG) being acknowledged being considered the gold standard for diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS), researchers have been seeking a biomarker that is less invasive, more practical in detection, and cost-effective for diagnosing and assessing the severity of the disease. To address this concern, the values of mean platelet volume (MPV) between patients with OSAHS and healthy controls were compared, and the relationship between MPV and multiple sleep monitoring parameters was analyzed in this study.
METHODS
A comprehensive search was conducted across medical databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, CNKI, and Wanfang, up until August 2, 2023, to identify published articles related to OSAHS. This study reviewed the literature regarding the values of MPV in individuals with OSAHS and control groups, the Pearson/Spearman correlation coefficients between MPV and sleep monitoring parameters, and the odds ratios (OR) of MPV concerning the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in patients with OSAHS. Meta-analyses were performed using standardized mean difference (SMD), Fisher's z values correlation coefficients (ZCOR) and odds ratio (OR) as effect variables. A fixed-effect model was used if the heterogeneity was not significant (I2<50%); otherwise, a random-effect model was applied. We will also combine the treatment effect estimates of individual trials using fixed-effect and random-effects models. Statistical analysis was carried out by employing STATA 11.0 and R 4.1.3.
RESULTS
In total, 31 articles were selected for the final analysis. The study involved 3604 patients and 1165 control individuals. The MPV in the OSAHS group was considerably elevated in comparison to the healthy controls (SMD = 0.37, 95%CI = 0.21-0.53, P < 0.001), particularly among individuals with severe OSAHS (SMD = 0.57, 95%CI = 0.23-0.90, P = 0.001). Subgroup analysis based on ethnicity, mean body mass index (BMI), and study design type also revealed a considerably higher MPV in the OSAHS category in comparison to the healthy controls. Furthermore, MPV showed correlations with various sleep monitoring parameters. The elevation of MPV may be one of the risk factors for CVDs in individuals with OSAHS (adjusted OR = 1.72, 95%CI = 1.08-2.73, P = 0.022).
CONCLUSION
MPV is a relatively simple, cost-effective, and practical indicator of the severity of OSAHS, with its values being linked to the risk of CVDs in individuals with OSAHS.
