BACKGROUND
Toxocariasis is an important health problem caused by the parasitic species () and (). Prevalence of toxocariasis in pregnant women as a vulnerable population is doubly important, and the aim of this study is to estimate the overall prevalence of toxocariasis infection in pregnant women according to the available reports.
METHODS
The present study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) checklists. A systematic search was carried out in international scientific databases (Google Scholar, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and PubMed) between 1990 and 2023. The overall prevalence of parasitic infection was estimated with a random-effects model. All analyses (overall prevalence, heterogeneity, publication bias, and sensitivity analysis) were performed with comprehensive meta-analysis (V2.2, Bio stat) software.
RESULTS
Amid the final eleven included studies, based on the random-effects model, the estimation of the pooled prevalence of spp. was 20.8% (95% CI, 9.8-38.7%). The association between the risk factors of toxocariasis and the prevalence of the disease was not statistically significant.
CONCLUSIONS
In the present study, significant prevalence was reported; however, considering the limited number of studies, it seems that the actual prevalence of the disease is higher. Therefore, it seems necessary to monitor this health problem in pregnant women.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a severe zoonotic mosquito-borne disease that represents an important threat to human and animal health, with major public health and socioeconomic impacts. This disease is endemic throughout many African countries and the Arabian Peninsula. This systematic review with meta-analysis was conducted to determine the RVF prevalence in humans, mosquitoes and other animal species in Africa. The review also provides contemporary data on RVF case fatality rate (CFR) in humans. In this systematic review with meta-analysis, a comprehensive literature search was conducted on the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Global Index Medicus databases from January 2000 to June 2022 to identify relevant studies. Pooled CFR and prevalence estimates were calculated using the random-effects model. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis were performed, and the I -statistic was used to investigate a potential source of heterogeneity. A total of 205 articles were included in the final analysis. The overall RVF CFR in humans was found to be 27.5% [95% CI = 8.0-52.5]. The overall pooled prevalence was 7.8% [95% CI = 6.2-9.6] in humans and 9.3% [95% CI = 8.1-10.6] in animals, respectively. The RVF prevalence in individual mosquitoes ranged from 0.0% to 25%. Subgroup analysis showed substantial heterogeneity with respect to geographical regions and human categories. The study shows that there is a correspondingly similar prevalence of RVF in human and animals; however, human CFR is much higher than the observed prevalence. The lack of a surveillance programme and the fact that this virus has subclinical circulation in animals and humans could explain these observations. The implementation of a One Health approach for RVF surveillance and control would be of great interest for human and animal health.

BACKGROUND
Diabetes is a growing health concern globally. Poorly managed diabetes may result in diabetic foot ulcers (DFU), which can become a source of chronic infection known as diabetic foot infections. The increasing trend of diabetes in Uganda speaks to the potential for diabetic foot ulcers which may eventually become infected and their attendant impact on the quality of life of diabetic patients. This review assesses the microbial diversity of DFUs in Uganda, aiming to guide treatment and identify research gaps.
MAIN BODY OF THE ABSTRACT
We searched PubMed, Scopus and Embase for studies conducted in Uganda that reported isolating microorganisms from diabetic foot ulcers. Following the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA), we included two eligible studies that reported isolating 122 bacteria spread across eleven (11) species using swab samples and conventional culture methods. Significant isolates included World Health Organization priority pathogens including: and . Methicillin resistant (MRSA) constituted 33.3% of Staphylococci species and 26% of all bacterial isolates while extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producing and constituted 14.29% of total microbial isolates. Most bacteria showed susceptibility to Imipenem, Vancomycin, Ciprofloxacin, and Clindamycin, but resistance to Cotrimoxazole and Ampicillin was noted.
SHORT CONCLUSION
We conclude that data on the microbiology of DFUs in Uganda is scarce; however, the bioburden of DFUs in the country is similar to those in other parts of the world, and MRSA poses a challenge to antibiotic therapy. Consequently, the continued use of swab samples and conventional culture and sensitivity methods may limit the isolation, identification, and presentation of other important isolates. We recommend characterization of bacterial isolates to better understand their genetic makeup, and the development of a national guideline for managing diabetic foot infections.

Fasciolosis is an emerging public health threat in a number of regions worldwide. To date, we lack an overview of both its occurrence and distribution in Southeast Asia across all actors involved in the life cycle, which impedes the development of disease control measures. Therefore, our objective was to collect recent information on the distribution and the prevalence of Fasciola spp. and the associated risk factors for infection in humans, animals, snails and plant carriers in Southeast Asia.
METHODOLOGY
Bibliographic and grey literature databases as well as reference lists of important review articles were searched for relevant records published between January 1st, 2000, and June 30th, 2022. The systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines for reporting systematic reviews. A total of 3,887 records were retrieved, of which 100 were included in the final analysis.
PRINCIPAL FINDINGS
The studies focused mainly on one host species (96.0%), with Fasciola spp. infection in animals being the most studied (72.0%), followed by humans (21.0%). Based on the used inclusion and exclusion criteria, reports were retrieved describing the presence of Fasciola spp. infection in seven out of 11 countries in Southeast Asia. Depending on the diagnostic tool applied, the prevalence of Fasciola spp. infection ranged between 0.3% and 66.7% in humans, between 0% and 97.8% in animals, and between 0% and 66.2% in snails. There were no studies reporting the presence of metacercariae on plant carriers.
CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE
Our study reconfirms that Fasciola spp. infections are widespread and highly prevalent in Southeast Asia, but it remains difficult to accurately assess the true occurrence of Fasciola spp. in absence of well-designed surveys covering all hosts. As next steps we propose to assess the occurrence of the infection across all actors involved in the transmission, to identify associated risk factors and to estimate the burden of the disease to support national and international decision makers.

Colonization with extended spectrum beta-lactamase and carbapenemases producing Enterobacteriaceae among hospitalized patients at the global level: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
BACKGROUND
Gut commensal bacteria can mediate resistance against pathogenic bacteria. However, exposure to antibiotics and hospitalization may facilitate the emergence of multidrug resistant bacteria. We aimed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to provide comprehensive evidence about colonization rate of extended spectrum beta-lactamase and carbapenemases producing Enterobacteriaceae.
METHOD
We used PubMed, Google Scholar and Web of Science data bases to search studies from January 1, 2016 to August10, 2022 about colonization rate of extended spectrum beta-lactamase and carbapenemase producing Enterobacteriaceae. Data were extracted from eligible studies and analyzed using Stata version 16 software. The quality of included studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal tools, and publication bias was assessed using funnel plot and eggers test.
RESULTS
We identified 342 studies from the comprehensive data search and data were extracted from 20 studies. The pooled estimate of extended spectrum beta-lactamase and carbapenemase producing Enterobacteriaceae were 45.6%(95%CI: 34.11-57-10) and 16.19% (95% CI: 5.46-26.91) respectively. The predominant extended spectrum beta-lactamase producers were E. coli,32.99% (95% CI: 23.28-42.69) and K. pneumoniae, 11.43% (95% CI:7.98-14.89). Prolonged hospitalization was linked to carbapenemase producing Enterobacteriaceae colonization with the odds of 14.77 (95% CI: -1.35-30.90) at admission and 45.63 (95% CI: 0.86-92.12) after ≥7 days of admission.
CONCLUSION
The pooled estimate of extended spectrum beta-lactamase and carbapenemase producing Enterobacteriaceae were high. This indicates the need for strong mitigation strategies to minimize the spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria at the healthcare facilities.

Astroviruses (AstVs) are a major cause of gastroenteritis, especially in children. They can be transmitted through various pathways, including environmental contamination via water matrices. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of AstV in different types of water, such as untreated and treated wastewater, surface water (e.g., rivers, lakes, and seawater), groundwater, drinking water, and other water matrices (e.g., irrigation water, gray water, reservoir water, floodwater, and pig slaughterhouse effluents). The meta-analysis included 80 articles, and the overall prevalence of AstV in water matrices was 36.6% [95% confidence interval (CI) of 29.6-44.0]. The highest prevalence was found in untreated wastewater at 56.8% (95% CI of 41.5-71.5), followed by treated wastewater at 48.5% (95% CI of 30.6-66.5), surface water at 28.6% (95% CI of 21.1-36.7), other matrices at 9.8% (95% CI of 0.7-25.3), drinking water at 3.3% (95% CI of 0.2-8.7), and groundwater at 0.5% (95% CI of 0.0-3.4). The most frequent AstVs detected in water environments were human AstVs, but canine and feline AstVs were also detected. Our findings highlight the importance of water as a potential route for AstV transmission, even in high-income countries. Effective water surveillance and treatment measures are necessary to minimize AstV environmental circulation and human infection through water.

Of the 5 human malarial parasites, and are the most prevalent species globally, while and are less prevalent and typically occur as mixed-infections. , previously considered a non-human primate (NHP) infecting species, is now a cause of human malaria in Malaysia. The other NHP species, , , , , and cause malaria in primates, which are mainly reported in southeast Asia and South America. The non- NHP species also emerged and were found to cross-transmit from their natural hosts (NHP) – to human hosts in natural settings. Here we have reviewed and collated data from the literature on the NHPs-to-human-transmitting species. It was observed that the natural transmission of these NHP parasites to humans had been reported from 2010 onwards. This study shows that: (1) the majority of the non- NHP mixed species infecting human cases were from Yala province of Thailand; (2) mono/mixed infections with other human-infecting species were prevalent in Malaysia and Thailand and (3) and were found in Central and South America.

BACKGROUND
Currently, iodine deficiency has become a significant burden globally; where 2 billion people and 29.8% of school-age children are iodine deficient. It is a leading cause of preventable brain damage among children, resulting in impaired cognitive and motor development. Even though salt iodization was started to be implemented to alleviate this burden in Ethiopia, primary studies assessing iodine deficiency in the country show highly variable findings, and no systematic review was conducted to determine the pooled prevalence of the problem which makes it difficult to assess the effect of the intervention as well as to design appropriate and timely measures. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the pooled prevalence of iodine deficiency and the common factors affecting its occurrence among school-age children in Ethiopia.
METHOD
To obtain the eligible studies, databases (EMBASE, Scopus, Hinari, and PubMed), websites (Google and Google Scholar), and references of the eligible studies were searched systematically. Data were extracted using an Excel spreadsheet and analyzed using the STATA 17 version. The I test was used to assess heterogeneity between the studies. A DerSimonian and Laird random-effects model was used to estimate the pooled prevalence and pooled odds ratio. A funnel plot and Egger's test were used to detect publication bias.
RESULT
A total of 15 eligible studies, representing 15,611 school-age children, were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of iodine deficiency among school-age children in Ethiopia was found to be 58% (95%CI 44.00-77.00), while the highest prevalence was recorded in the Oromia Region, which was 64% (95% CI 49-79). Goitrogenic food consumption (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 2.93, 95% CI 1.60-5.35) and being female (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 1.87, 95% CI 1.43-2.44) showed a significant association with the prevalence of iodine deficiency.
CONCLUSION
Iodine deficiency among school-age children in Ethiopia was noticeably high. Goitrogenic food consumption and the sex of the child were determinant factors for the occurrence of iodine deficiency among the children. Therefore, appropriate advice should be given to households to limit goitrogenic foods in the diet of their children by giving due attention to their female children.

BACKGROUND
According to the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 report, up to 1.5 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) are lost due to soil-transmitted helminths (STHs), and 5.9 million people are at risk of acquiring STHs. Regions with the highest prevalence of STH infections include Sub-Saharan Africa, China, South America, and Asia. While there are numerous fragmented studies on STH, comprehensive information on the prevalence and geographic distribution of different species, as well as their regional variations in the context of STHs is limited. The present systematic review and meta-analysis study attempts to provide a summary of the prevalence, geographical variation, and determinants of STHs among schoolchildren aged 5 to 18 years.
METHODS
An extensive literature search was carried out using PubMed, Embase, Cinhal, and Psychinfo for studies published between 1999 and 2022 that reported the rate of STH infection in school-going children aged 5-18 years. A random effects model was employed in this meta-analysis due to expected heterogeneity. Subgroup analysis was carried out based on sex and STH species because of expected geographical variation.
RESULTS
A total of 19,725 of the 49,630 children examined were infected with STH, yielding an overall pooled prevalence of 37.16% (95% CI: 29.74-44.89). The prevalence was highest in the Western Pacific region at 50.41% (95% CI: 33.74-67.04) followed by Europe at 39.74% (95% CI: 20.40-61.0) and Africa at 37.10% (95% CI: 26.84-47.95). was found to be the most prevalent helminth with a prevalence of 24.07% (95% CI: 17.07-31.83).
CONCLUSION
The Western Pacific region is classified as a High-risk Zone (HRZ), while Southeast Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Eastern Mediterranean are classified as moderate-risk zones (MRZs). We found a 12% reduction in the pooled prevalence of STH infection from 1999 to 2012. was the predominant species among schoolchildren. Mass Drug Administration (MDA) of Albendazole tablets and improved water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) practices are effective in controlling and preventing STH. Ensuring their implementation and access is crucial to addressing the problem.

Surveillance for genetic markers of resistance can provide valuable information on the likely efficacy of antimalarials but needs to be targeted to ensure optimal use of resources. We conducted a systematic search and review of publications in seven databases to compile resistance marker data from studies in India. The sample collection from the studies identified from this search was conducted between 1994 and 2020, and these studies were published between 1994 and 2022. In all, Plasmodium falciparum Kelch13 (PfK13), P. falciparum dihydropteroate synthase, and P. falciparum dihydrofolate reductase (PfDHPS) genotype data from 2,953, 4,148, and 4,222 blood samples from patients with laboratory-confirmed malaria, respectively, were extracted from these publications and uploaded onto the WorldWide Antimalarial Resistance Network molecular surveyors. These data were fed into hierarchical geostatistical models to produce maps with a predicted prevalence of the PfK13 and PfDHPS markers, and of the associated uncertainty. Zones with a predicted PfDHPS 540E prevalence of >15% were identified in central, eastern, and northeastern India. The predicted prevalence of PfK13 mutants was nonzero at only a few locations, but were within or adjacent to the zones with >15% prevalence of PfDHPS 540E. There may be a greater probability of artesunate-sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine failures in these regions, but these predictions need confirmation. This work can be applied in India and elsewhere to help identify the treatments most likely to be effective for malaria elimination.
