Effects of acupuncture or similar needling therapy on pain, proprioception, balance, and self-reported function in individuals with chronic ankle instability: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
OBJECTIVE
Acupuncture or similar needling therapy has long been used to improve well-being, but its effectiveness in management of chronic ankle instability (CAI) is unclear. To investigate the efficacy of acupuncture or similar needling therapy on pain, proprioception, balance, and self-reported function in individuals with CAI.
METHODS
Nine databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, EBSCO, PEDro, CNKI, WanFang, and CQVIP) were systematically searched from inception to April 2023. This study included randomized controlled trials involving acupuncture or similar needling therapy as an intervention for individuals with CAI. Data were extracted independently by two assessors using a standardized form. Literature quality and risk bias were assessed by using the PEDro scale.
RESULTS
Twelve trials (n = 571) were found, of which the final meta-analysis was conducted with eight. Different studies employ varying treatments, including specific needle types, techniques, and therapeutic frameworks. Compared to control without acupuncture or similar needling therapy, acupuncture or similar needling intervention resulted in improved pain (WMD 1.33, 95 % CI 0.14-2.52, I²=90 %, p = 0.03), proprioception (active joint position sense, WMD 1.71, 95 % CI 0.95-2.48, I²=0 %, p < 0.0001), balance (SMD 0.54, 95 % CI 0.03-1.04, I²=46 %, p = 0.04), and self-reported function (Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (WMD 2.92, 95 % CI 0.94-4.90, I²=78 %, p = 0.004); American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (WMD 9.36, 95 % CI 6.57-12.15, I²=0 %, p < 0.001); Foot and Ankle Ability Measure: activities of daily living (WMD 5.09, 95 % CI 1.74-8.44, I²=0 %, p = 0.003)) for individuals with CAI.
CONCLUSIONS
The available evidence suggests that acupuncture or similar needling therapy may improve pain, proprioception, balance, and self-reported function in individuals with CAI, but more trials are needed to verify these findings. Furthermore, various needles and techniques using in different studies have resulted in methodologic limitations that should be addressed in the future.

AIM
The aim of this systematic review is to identify, describe and synthesize evidence from experimental studies conducted to measure and conceptualize self-efficacy within the context of nursing education and the transition of nursing students to practice as a registered practitioners.
DESIGN
Systematic review.
METHODS
Papers were screened by four independent reviewers, and data were extracted using a standardized data extraction tool. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidance and checklists were used to guide this review.
RESULTS
The review included 47 studies, using a quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test design (n = 39) and randomized control trials (n = 8). Various teaching and learning interventions were used to enhance self-efficacy; however, there is no definitive conclusion to be drawn regarding the most effective educational interventions. Various instruments were used in the studies to measure self-efficacy. 10 of these were related to general self-efficacy, while 37 instruments measured self-efficacy in the context of specific skills.

BACKGROUND
Depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the postpartum period. Depression can decrease self-efficacy in breastfeeding by reducing the mother's self-confidence. Considering the conflicting results regarding the relationship between postpartum depression and breastfeeding self-efficacy, this systematic review was conducted to investigate the relationship between breastfeeding self-efficacy and postpartum depression.
METHOD
In this systematic review, published articles in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Sciences, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases were searched using English keywords "Self-efficacy, breastfeeding, breastfeeding Self-efficacy, depression, postpartum depression" without publication date limit. Data analysis was done with employing STATA14 software. Heterogeneity was assessed using I index which was 0%. Therefore, the fixed effects method was used to combine the data and perform meta-analysis.
RESULT
The results of the meta-analysis showed that based on the fixed effect method, depression was associated with decreased breastfeeding self-efficacy on the first day (SMD = 0.62, 95%CI: -0.830, -0.41, p = 0.0001) and on the third day (SMD = 0.84, 95% CI: -0.55,1.14, p = 0.0001). The Begg and Manzumdar test revealed no publication bias, with p = 0.317.
CONCLUSION
Postpartum depression may be associated with a decrease in the mother's breastfeeding self-efficacy and placing mother in a condition to pay low attention to her maternal role. Therefore, healthcare providers should provide adequate support according to the needs of mothers and develop diagnostic and treatment protocols to improve the level of maternal health.

BACKGROUND
This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the efficacy of low intensity psychological interventions for older adults (60+ years) with clinical anxiety and/or depressive disorders.
METHOD
Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised control trials of low-intensity psychological interventions for anxiety and/or depression with an active or passive control condition (e.g., waitlist, treatment-as-usual or active control) in any setting. Low intensity psychological interventions (e.g., cognitive behaviour therapy [CBT]) targeted anxiety and/or depression as primary outcomes, were primarily self-help, and included support from trained practitioners/facilitators with <6 h total contact time (typically <30 min p/contact).
RESULTS
Seven studies consisting of 304 older adults (65-78 years, M = 70, SD = 4) were identified and six included in the meta-analysis of depression outcomes and three for anxiety. A random effects meta-analysis of group differences in symptom change from pre-post treatment found evidence favouring low intensity psychological interventions over passive control groups for the treatment of depressive and anxiety symptoms, with moderate effect sizes for depression (Cohen's d = -0.62) and large effect sizes for anxiety (Cohen's d = -0.84) at post-treatment.
LIMITATIONS
Results are limited by study design of included studies such that the efficacy of interventions compared to treatment-as-usual, non-CBT approaches, in adults >80 years and long-term effects are unknown.
CONCLUSIONS
There is some evidence supporting the clinical benefits of low intensity psychological interventions for depressive and anxiety symptoms in older adults compared to passive controls. More research is needed to examine efficacy compared to active control conditions, and among those over 80 years.

AIM
This study reviewed the literature on nurses' knowledge, risk assessment practices, self-efficacy, attitudes, and behaviours towards venous thromboembolism (VTE).
DESIGN
A systematic review following PRISMA guidelines.
METHODS
CINAHL (via EBSCO), MEDLINE (via PubMed), and Web of Science were electronic databases used to find studies published from 2010 to November 2020 in English language. A Hoy critical appraisal checklist was used to assess the risk of bias and methodologic quality.
RESULTS
This study included fourteen studies conducted on 8628 Registered Nurses. Nine of the fourteen studies examined nurses' general knowledge level regarding VTE, and five showed that most nurses had a good knowledge of VTE. Of the 14 studies, six assessed nurses' risk assessment knowledge regarding VTE, and three showed that nurses had low knowledge of VTE risk assessment. Eleven studies assessed nurses' practices concerning VTE prophylaxis; 5 of the 11 studies reported that nurses had poor and unsatisfactory levels of VTE practice. Three of the 14 studies showed that nurses had low self-efficacy and varied beliefs. The most frequent recommendations were to create continuous educational programs and in-service training programs (n = 11), followed by creating institutional protocols standardizing VTE (n = 6).
CONCLUSIONS
Comprehensive educational programs and campaigns based on well-established and standardized tools should be provided to nurses to improve their VTE knowledge.

With rising time constraints, health care professionals increasingly depend on technology to provide health advice and teach patients how to manage chronic disease. The effectiveness of video-based tools in improving knowledge, health behaviors, disease severity, and health care use for patients with major chronic illnesses is not well understood.
OBJECTIVE
The aim of this study was to assess the current literature regarding the efficacy of video-based educational tools for patients in improving process and outcome measures across several chronic illnesses.
METHODS
A systematic review was conducted using CINAHL and PubMed with predefined search terms. The search included studies published through October 2021. The eligible studies were intervention studies of video-based self-management patient education for an adult patient population with the following chronic health conditions: asthma, chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic pain syndromes, diabetes, heart failure, HIV infection, hypertension, inflammatory bowel disease, and rheumatologic disorders. The eligible papers underwent full extraction of study characteristics, study design, sample demographics, and results. Bias was assessed with the Cochrane risk-of-bias tools. Summary statistics were synthesized in Stata SE (StataCorp LLC). Data reporting was conducted per the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) checklist.
RESULTS
Of the 112 studies fully extracted, 59 (52.7%) were deemed eligible for inclusion in this review. The majority of the included papers were superiority randomized controlled trials (RCTs; 39/59, 66%), with fewer pre-post studies (13/59, 22%) and noninferiority RCTs (7/59, 12%). The most represented conditions of interest were obstructive lung disease (18/59, 31%), diabetes (11/59, 19%), and heart failure (9/59, 15%). The plurality (28/59, 47%) of video-based interventions only occurred once and occurred alongside adjunct interventions that included printed materials, in-person counseling, and interactive modules. The most frequently studied outcomes were disease severity, health behavior, and patient knowledge. Video-based tools were the most effective in improving patient knowledge (30/40, 75%). Approximately half reported health behavior (21/38, 56%) and patient self-efficacy (12/23, 52%) outcomes were improved by video-based tools, and a minority of health care use (11/28, 39%) and disease severity (23/69, 33%) outcomes were improved by video-based tools. In total, 48% (22/46) of the superiority and noninferiority RCTs and 54% (7/13) of the pre-post trials had moderate or high risk of bias.
CONCLUSIONS
There is robust evidence that video-based tools can improve patient knowledge across several chronic illnesses. These tools less consistently improve disease severity and health care use outcomes. Additional study is needed to identify features that maximize the efficacy of video-based interventions for patients across the spectrum of digital competencies to ensure optimized and equitable patient education and outcomes.

BACKGROUND
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) interventions are growing in popularity as possible treatments for long COVID symptoms. However, comprehensive analysis of current evidence in this setting is still lacking.
OBJECTIVE
This study aims to review existing published studies on the use of CAM interventions for patients experiencing long COVID through a systematic review.
DESIGN
Systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
METHODS
A comprehensive electronic literature search was performed in multiple databases and clinical trial registries from September 2019 to January 2023. RCTs evaluating efficacy and safety of CAM for long COVID were included. Methodological quality of each included trial was appraised with the Cochrane 'risk of bias' tool. A qualitative analysis was conducted due to heterogeneity of included studies.
RESULTS
A total of 14 RCTs with 1195 participants were included in this review. Study findings demonstrated that CAM interventions could benefit patients with long COVID, especially those suffering from neuropsychiatric disorders, olfactory dysfunction, cognitive impairment, fatigue, breathlessness, and mild-to-moderate lung fibrosis. The main interventions reported were self-administered transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation, neuro-meditation, dietary supplements, olfactory training, aromatherapy, inspiratory muscle training, concurrent training, and an online breathing and well-being program.
CONCLUSION
CAM interventions may be effective, safe, and acceptable to patients with symptoms of long COVID. However, the findings from this systematic review should be interpreted with caution due to various methodological limitations. More rigorous trials focused on CAM for long COVID are warranted in the future.

BACKGROUND
The glycemic control of automated insulin delivery (AID) systems in outpatient children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D) has not been systematically evaluated.
PURPOSE
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of AID systems in children and adolescents in outpatient settings.
DATA SOURCES
PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched until 4 May 2023. This study was registered with PROSPERO (2023, CRD42023395252).
STUDY SELECTION
Randomized controlled trials that compared AID systems with conventional insulin therapy in outpatient children and adolescents with T1D and reported continuous glucose monitoring outcomes were selected.
DATA EXTRACTION
Percent time in range (TIR) (3.9-10 mmol/L), time below range (TBR) (<3.9 mmol/L), and time above range (TAR) (>10 mmol/L) were extracted. Data were summarized as mean differences (MDs) with 95% CIs.
DATA SYNTHESIS
Twenty-five trials (1,345 participants) were included in the meta-analysis. AID systems were associated with an increased percentage of TIR (MD, 11.38% [95% CI 9.01-13.76], P < 0.001; high certainty). The favorable effect was consistent whether AID was used over 3 months (10.46% [8.71-12.20]) or 6 months (10.87% [7.11-14.63]). AID systems had a favorable effect on the proportion of TBR (-0.59% [-1.02 to -0.15], P = 0.008; low certainty) or TAR (-12.19% [-14.65 to -9.73], P < 0.001; high certainty) compared with control treatment.
LIMITATIONS
Substantial heterogeneity was observed in most analyses.
CONCLUSIONS
AID systems are more effective than conventional insulin therapy for children and adolescents with T1D in outpatient settings. The favorable effect is consistent both in the short term and long term.

INTRODUCTION
At present, stroke has become the first cause of death and disability among Chinese adults. With the coming of the aging population in China, the disease burden brought by stroke will be increasingly aggravated. And stroke is a leading cause of disability. There is a golden plastic period after stroke, during which timely and safe intervention and rehabilitation therapy can effectively improve the disability status. However, there is still controversy about the duration of interventional rehabilitation after stroke. This study conducted a meta-analysis on the influence of intervention in early and late ischemic stroke rehabilitation.
METHOD
Chinese language databases such as CNKI, Wanfang, and VIP, and English language databases such as Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, and The Cochrane Library were searched, and RCT related to early and late rehabilitation of ischemic stroke from the establishment of the database to October 2023 was collected. Review Manager 5.4.1 was used for relevant analysis. The main outcomes were Barthel Index or Modified Barthel Index, Fugl-Meyer Assessment scale, NIHSS, China Stroke Scale. Standardized Mean Difference (SMD) was used as an effective indicator of continuity variables, and the estimated interval was expressed by 95% confidence interval (CI).
RESULTS
A total of 1908 patients were included in 16 studies. The results showed that, compared with late rehabilitation, early rehabilitation improved clinical efficacy. Barthel Index or Modified Barthel Index score was [SMD = 1.40, 95%CI(1.16,1.63), p < 0.001]; the score of Fugl-Meyer Assessment Scale was [SMD = 1.18, 95%Cl (0.85, 1.52), P < 0.001]; the score of NIHSS was [SMD= -0.44, 95% CI(-0.65, -0.24), P < 0.001]; the result of China Stroke Scale score was [SMD= -0.37, 95%CI(-0.56, -0.18), P < 0.001].
CONCLUSION
In comparison with late rehabilitation, early rehabilitation can significantly improve self-care abilities, daily activities, and neurological functions of ischemic stroke patients.
TRIAL REGISTRATION
This meta-analysis has been registered with Prospero, and the registration number is CRD42022309911. The registration period is March 22, 2022.

OBJECTIVE
To assess the effectiveness of acupuncture for treating depression and anxiety in patients diagnosed with functional dyspepsia (FD).
METHODS
PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CNKI, Wanfang Data, Sinomed, and VIP Database were searched until April 30, 2023 for Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) comparing acupuncture to placebo or drugs for symptom alleviation. Two independent reviewers conducted the study search, data extraction, and bias risk assessment using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. Mean difference (MD), risk ratio (RR), and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) were computed. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were also performed. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) system was employed to evaluate the evidence level.
RESULTS
A total of 16 RCTs involving 1315 participants were included. Acupuncture demonstrated marked superiority over placebo (MD = -7.07, 95%CI: -11.03 to -3.10, very low quality evidence) in mitigating Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) scores and was found to be more effective in reducing Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) scores than either placebo (MD = -4.63, 95%CI: -6.28 to -2.98, low quality evidence) or first-line drugs (MD = -2.71, 95%CI: -5.19 to -0.23, very low quality evidence). In terms of attenuating Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA) and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) scores, acupuncture consistently outperformed both placebo (HAMA: MD = -2.58, 95%CI: -4.33 to -0.83, very low quality evidence; HAMD: MD = -1.89, 95%CI: -3.11 to -0.67, low quality evidence) and first-line drugs (HAMA: MD = -5.76, 95%CI: -10.18 to -1.35, very low quality evidence; HAMD: MD = -5.59, 95%CI: -7.59 to -3.59, very low quality evidence). However, no significant difference was observed between acupuncture and placebo in terms of improvement in Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) scores.
CONCLUSIONS
Based on current clinical evidence, acupuncture might have a positive effect on depression and anxiety in patients with FD. Further large-sample, multi-center, high-quality RCTs validation are required, as the conclusion is limited by the quantity and quality of the included studies.
