PURPOSE
To observe the distribution characteristics of corneal higher-order aberrations (HOAs) in cataract patients, and analyze the relationship of HOAs with patients' age and ocular biometric parameters.
METHODS
This retrospective study reviews the patients with cataract in Wuhan Aier Eye Department from January to August 2022. Root mean square (RMS) of the total HOA (tHOA), spherical aberration (SA), coma and trefoil aberration of the anterior cornea at central 4 and 6 mm optic zone were measured by the Wavefront Aberrometer (OPD-Scan III; Nidek Inc, Tokyo, Japan). The biometric parameters including axial length (AL), keratometry (K), central corneal thickness (CCT) and lens thickness (LT) were measured by swept-source coherence laser interferometry (OA-2000; TOMEY Corp, Aichi, Japan). Subgroup analyses and multiple linear regression analyses were used to determine whether HOAs were associated with age and ocular biometric parameters.
RESULTS
A total of 976 patients (976 eyes) were included, averagely aged 65 years. At central 4 and 6 mm optic zone, the mean RMS of tHOA were respectively 0.20 and 0.65 μm, the SA were 0.06 and 0.30 μm, the coma aberration were 0.11 and 0.35 μm, and the trefoil aberration were 0.12 and 0.30 μm. The tHOA decreased with age until 60 years and then started to increase afterwards. The tHOA, coma and trefoil aberration increased with corneal astigmatism. The tHOA, SA, and coma aberration differ among different AL groups, and emmetropes had the smallest tHOA, SA, and coma aberration.
CONCLUSIONS
With increasing age, the value of tHOA decrease first and started increasing at 60 years. The trends of corneal HOAs are consistent with corneal low-order aberrations. The values of tHOA, SA and coma aberration were the smallest in emmetropic eyes.

This study aims to compare changes of corneal topography (Galilei G4) before and after the instillation of artificial tears in patients with dry eye disease (DED). Corneal topography was performed in patients 1 min before and after artificial tear instillation. Two types of artificial tears were used: 1% polysorbate 80 (PSB) and 0.5% carboxymethylcellulose (CMC). Of 135 patients, PSB and CMC were instilled in 101 and 34 eyes, respectively. The average value of Sim K increased significantly after instillation (44.07 ± 2.26 diopter (D)) compared to before (43.90 ± 2.02 D, = 0.006) the instillation of artificial tears. Mean Sim K astigmatism was statistically increased after PSB instillation (1.48 ± 2.17 D) compared to before instillation (1.31 ± 2.10 D, = 0.049). An axis change of astigmatism 10° or more after artificial tear instillation was found in 51.9% of patients, and 30° or more in 20.0% of patients. Increased Sim K value and significant changes in the astigmatic axis in the corneal topography were observed after instillation of artificial tears in DED patients. PSB instillation had a greater effect on corneal keratometry values than CMC instillation.

INTRODUCTION
This study evaluated the differences and agreement between a new Scheimpflug camera (Scansys) and a swept-source anterior segment optical coherence tomographer (CASIA 2) for measurements of the anterior segment of the eye in normal subjects.
METHODS
This prospective study included 84 eyes from 84 normal adult subjects who underwent three consecutive measurements with the Scansys and the CASIA 2 in random order. The mean keratometry (Km), astigmatism magnitude (AST), J, and J vectors for both anterior and posterior corneal surfaces, central corneal thickness (CCT), thinnest corneal thickness (TCT), and anterior chamber depth (ACD) were obtained by both devices. The difference between these two devices was assessed using paired t test and violin plots. Bland-Altman plots and 95% limits of agreement (LoAs) were used to evaluate agreement.
RESULTS
No statistically significant differences between the two devices were found for the anterior AST, anterior J, and posterior J (P > 0.05). The remaining parameters were statistically significant (P ≤ 0.05), but the differences not clinically significant. The violin plots showed that the distribution and probability density of the measured parameters were similar for both devices. Bland-Altman plots revealed high agreement for the measured parameters between the Scansys and CASIA 2, with narrow 95% LoAs.
CONCLUSIONS
In terms of assessing parameters for the anterior segment, our study indicated that Scansys and CASIA 2 generally showed significant agreement. The two devices used in this study's assessment of all the parameters can be used interchangeably in refractive analysis.

AIM
To determine the corneal sensitivity recovery period after laser-assisted sub-epithelial keratectomy (LASEK) refractive surgery and investigate the effects of ablation depth on it.
METHODS
In this study examinations were performed on 90 right eyes of 90 people (34 males and 56 females) with an age range of 20-35 and an average of 22.26±3.8 years old. A sensation of 5 corneal regions, including the center and 4 mid-peripheral regions, , nasal, inferior, temporal, and superior, each at a distance of 2 mm from the center of the cornea were measured with a Cochet-Bonnet esthesiometer device in 3-time points including before LASEK, 1 and 3mo after the surgery, respectively. LASEK was performed on individuals with stabilized myopia of -1.00 to -7.00 diopters and astigmatism of less than 2.00 diopters. Furthermore, the individuals were divided into three groups regarding ablation depth.
RESULTS
The highest level of corneal sensitivity before surgery was related to the center of the cornea (59.1±7.76), and the highest level of corneal sensitivity loss was also related to this region. The sensation of all measured corneal regions significantly reduced 1mo postoperatively and returned to their preoperative levels 3mo after surgery (mean of 5 corneal regions in levels of preoperation: 58.2±6.48, 1mo postoperation: 57.3±5.84, 3mo postoperation: 58.2±5.49; <0.05). A significant relationship was found between ablation depth and corneal sensitivity changes in the center and temporal regions (<0.05).
CONCLUSION
Corneal sensitivity in myopia and low astigmatism decreases after LASEK and reaches the preoperative level within 3mo. The depth of ablation during surgery affected the recovery of corneal sensitivity.

BACKGROUND
To investigate and compare the vision-related quality of life (QOL) in different types of refractive error (RE).
METHODS
This cross-sectional study was performed on 200 subjects, categorized into four groups of 50 each, consisting of subjects with myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and emmetropia, the latter being the control group. The mean age of the participants was 23.88 ± 5.87 (range, 15 to 38: 110 females and 90 males). RE was defined as myopia, spherical equivalent (SE) < -0.25 diopters (D), hyperopia, SE > + 0.25 D, astigmatism, cylinder < -0.25 D, and emmetropia (-0.25 ≤ SE(D) ≤ + 0.25, cylinder ≥ -0.25). Groups are subdivided into very low magnitudes of RE (0.50 and 0.75) and significant RE (1.00 ≤). Vision-related QOL was assessed using the Persian version of the 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ-25). The NEI-VFQ was scored as visual function and socioemotional scales using Rasch analysis.
RESULTS
Corrected myopia, astigmatism, uncorrected myopia, and hyperopia had a lower vision-related QOL than emmetropes. (P < 0.001). Vision-related QOL in myopic subjects was lower than that in astigmatic participants. Very low myopes, who often do not use correction, had a significantly lower QOL than other groups.
CONCLUSION
Individuals with refractive errors experience a lower QOL score than those without. Notably, the adverse impact on QOL score is significantly greater in myopic cases, particularly very low myopia, compared to other refractive errors. Therefore, it is strongly recommended not to neglect managing very low myopia since it may improve participants' QOL.

OBJECTIVE
To demonstrate a multivariate method of analysis of the short-term variation of refractive state in keratoconus (KC) patients.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS
In this observational study, 19 eyes with KC and 19 healthy control eyes were measured. The study included both male and female participants and the mean age was 23.6 years (range 18-34 years) and 23.2 years (range 22-26 years) for KC and control participants, respectively. Forty consecutive autorefractor measurements were taken for each participant and the short-term variation thereof was analysed using multivariate methods of analysis.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION
Short-term variation of refractive state is greater in eyes with KC than in healthy control eyes and variation increases with severity of disease. A novel finding was that there was much more ortho-astigmatic and oblique-astigmatic variation seen in KC eyes than in control eyes which had predominately stigmatic variation. Refractive state is described by three components, namely, sphere, cylinder and axis. Although it is multivariate in nature, it is often analysed using univariate statistical methods. In diseases such as KC, where early diagnosis is crucial for a good prognosis, it is necessary that researchers endeavour to investigate the disease from different perspectives to fully understand the nature of the disease. This paper comprehensively demonstrates the multivariate statistical methods of analysis of refractive data. The implementation of this analysis provides insight into the short-term variation of refractive data in healthy and keratoconic eyes, and these findings have not been demonstrated before using univariate statistics.

PURPOSE
To compare the visual outcomes and residual astigmatism following implantation of Eyecryl toric versus Alcon AcrySof IQ toric intra-ocular lenses (IOLs).
METHODS
This retrospective, observational study included 143 eyes of 141 patients who underwent phaco-emulsification, followed by implantation of Eyecryl toric IOL (n = 83 eyes) or Alcon toric IOL (n = 60 eyes) in an eye hospital in South India from 2018 to 2021. At 1 month post-op, the uncorrected distance visual acuity (UCVA), best corrected distance visual acuity (BCVA), and residual astigmatism of the toric IOL were compared and analyzed.
RESULTS
The mean pre-op corneal astigmatism was 2.02 ± 0.81 D and 1.70 ± 0.68 D in the Alcon and Eyecryl groups, respectively (P = 0.005). The mean post-op corneal astigmatism at 1 month was 0.50 ± 0.51 D and 0.36 ± 0.42 D in the Alcon and Eyecryl groups, respectively, with no statistically significant difference between them (P = 0.87). The mean post-op UCVA in logarithm of minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) at 1 month was similar between the groups at 0.17 ± 0.18 and 0.17 ± 0.16 in the Alcon and Eyecryl groups, respectively (P = 0.98). The mean post-op BCVA in logMAR at 1 month was 0.06 ± 0.09 and 0.03 ± 0.10 in the Alcon and Eyecryl groups, respectively (P = 0.02).
CONCLUSION
Both Eyecryl toric and Alcon AcrySof IQ toric IOLs showed comparable post-operative outcomes in terms of UCVA and residual astigmatism. The post-op BCVA was clinically similar between groups but statistically better in the Eyecryl toric group.

PURPOSE
To compare intermediate visual outcomes in patients previously implanted with bilateral Clareon monofocal IOLs versus bilateral Eyhance IOLs.
METHODS
This was a non-interventional, single-center, examiner-masked, comparative study. Participants were cataract patients presenting at least 3 months after uncomplicated, bilateral implantation of either Clareon or Eyhance non-toric and toric IOLs. Outcomes measures included binocular distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity (DCIVA), binocular corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), binocular best-corrected defocus curve, postoperative mean residual spherical equivalent (MRSE), and residual astigmatism.
RESULTS
A total of 620 eyes of 310 subjects (155 subjects per group) were evaluated. The mean difference in DCIVA was 0.05 logMAR between the Eyhance and Clareon IOLs which was significant (p < 0.01), but within the 0.1 logMAR non-inferiority margin. Mean CDVA of the Clareon group was 0.01 ± 0.03 logMAR compared to 0.02 ± 0.03 logMAR of the Eyhance Group (p > 0.05). Defocus curves from +1.0 D to -3.0 D were not clinically nor statistically different between the Clareon and Eyhance groups (p > 0.05).
CONCLUSION
The results of this study show that bilateral implantation of Clareon monofocal IOLs and Eyhance monofocal IOLs lead to similar distance and intermediate visual outcomes.

SUMMARY
This is a descriptive summary of the case of a patient with Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome associated with a congenital malformation of the iris and consequent pupillary morphological alteration of an atypical characteristic reported. This anomaly is unique in scientific literature and exhibits a peculiarity that we have called pseudoacorea: Hidden pupil. Other associated abnormal clinical findings were posterior embryotoxon, astigmatism, amblyopia, and exotropia. Diagnosis was achieved by instilling ocular mydriatics into the cul-de-sac that revealed this peculiarity. It is necessary to make a differential diagnosis with other pupillary pathologies such as corectopia, acorea and microcoria. Early detection of pathology and surgical management is necessary, since it would lead to a better visual prognosis for both amblyopia and strabismus.
BACKGROUND
Among the malformations of the pupil, we can find polycoria (more than one pupil), dyscoria (abnormal pupil shape), corectopia (abnormal pupil position) and acorea (absence of pupil). In addition, morphologically normal pupils can denote other anomalies such as the microcoria described by Holth in 1923. Acorea is a rare anomaly, congenital or acquired, characterized by an absolute absence of the pupil both at rest and in mydriasis. In our case we prefer to differentiate it and name it pseudoacorea, since although there is a total absence of the pupil at rest thanks to the application of ocular mydriatics, a micropupil with discoric and corectopic characteristics is achieved. It is worth noting that we have not detected in the scientific literature any case described as the one that we will develop here.
CONCLUSION
The case of a patient with Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome associated with a congenital malformation of the iris and consequent atypical pupillary morphological alteration is presented. This anomaly is unique in the scientific literature and presents a peculiarity that we have called pseudoacorea: Hidden pupil. Early detection of pathology and surgical management is necessary, since it would lead to a better visual prognosis for both amblyopia and strabismus.

PURPOSE
To assess the safety and efficacy of a customized ablation treatment (InnovEyes) to correct myopia and myopic astigmatism with femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (Femto LASIK).
PATIENTS AND METHODS
In this prospective, nonrandomized, multicenter study, 113 patients (225 eyes) with preoperative myopia less than -9.0 diopters (D) and astigmatism 0 to -4.0 D (based on InnovEyes refraction) underwent wavefront, tomography, and biometry assessment using a single diagnostic device (InnovEyes sightmap). These data were imported and used unmodified by the InnovEyes algorithm to automatically calculate and optimize correction of lower- and higher‑order aberrations (HOAs) treated by the EX500 ablation profile. Visual acuity, refractive error, HOAs, and patient satisfaction were evaluated over 3 months.
RESULTS
A total of 106 patients (212 eyes) completed the study and were included in the analysis. Mean preoperative manifest refraction spherical equivalent (MRSE) was -3.38±1.76 D. At Month 3, uncorrected distance visual acuity was 20/20 or better in 208/212 (98.1%) eyes, and it was the same as, or better than, the preoperative best-corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) in 162/212 (76.4%) eyes; 76/212 (35.8%) eyes gained ≥1 line of CDVA. MRSE was within ±0.5 D in 195/212 (92.0%) eyes. Additionally, 201/209 (96.2%) eyes had no change (defined as a change between -0.1 μm and 0.1 μm, inclusive) in HOAs, and 105/106 (99.1%) patients reported to be satisfied with the results.
CONCLUSION
Customizing ray-tracing Femto LASIK with this platform appeared safe and effective in correcting myopic astigmatism and also achieved a significant percentage of eyes gaining lines of vision, potentially by addressing HOAs, along with a consistently high level of patient satisfaction.
