Observational Study
Although the link between androgens and depression is well established in adults, the effects of cofactors on this association are less clearly understood, particularly in youth. Epidemiological cohort study of adolescents in Dresden, Germany. Analyses comprised data of 985 individuals assessed at baseline and of 512 individuals at 1-year follow-up. We investigated multivariable regression models for cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of hair testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and their cortisol ratios with 12-month diagnoses of major depressive disorder (MDD) and MDD without any anxiety disorder assessed with standardized diagnostic interview (DIA-X-5), and with dimensional depression scores (PHQ-9, PROMIS), separately for males and females. The potential moderating effect of social support was determined. Cross-sectional analyses yielded inverse associations of testosterone and DHEA with MDD and MDD without any anxiety disorders in males. In cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses, baseline ratio cortisol/DHEA was significantly, inversely associated to PROMIS-depression in males. Only cross-sectional associations for ratio cortisol/DHEA and PROMIS-depression remained significant after Bonferroni-Holm correction. No robust associations were observed in female participants. Social support exerted no consistent moderating effect on the investigated association. The present observational cohort study showed no consistent association of hair androgen concentrations with depressive disorders in adolescents. However, findings provide some support for the association between the cortisol/DHEA ratio and depression in males. Longitudinal research designs in large samples are needed to understand the interplay between androgens, depression, and developmental and social factors in youth.

BACKGROUND
As the survival rates of very low birth weight (VLBW) infants have increased, their neurodevelopmental outcomes are of concern. This study aims to determine the demographic and perinatal characteristics of premature infant according to head growth, identify clinical factors affecting growth catch-up, and explore differences in developmental outcomes according to catch-up states.
METHODS
This nationwide prospective cohort study of Korean Neonatal Network data analyzed premature infants with very low birth weight (< 1,500 g) between 2014 and 2017. A total of 253 eligible infants who had completed the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition, were assigned into two groups: a catch-up (CU) group with a head circumference above the 10 percentile and a no catch-up (NCU) group with a head circumference below the 10 percentile at 18-24 months of corrected age (CA).
RESULTS
Most (81.4%, 206/253) premature infants exhibited catch-up growth at 18-24 months of CA. Rates of microcephaly, intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), sepsis, necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), length of NICU stay, ventilation care, and parenteral nutrition were significantly greater in the NCU group (P < 0.05). On multiple linear regression analysis, BPD status was the most influential clinical factor affecting catch-up head growth after adjusting for gestational age, birth weight, and birth head circumference (adjusted OR 4.586, 95% CI 1.960-10.729). At 18-24 months of CA, the NCU group exhibited lower developmental indices and a higher rate of developmental delay than the CU group. Motor developmental delay was the most significant factor relevant to catch-up head growth, and the motor development difference between the two groups was only statistically significant after adjusting for four major neonatal morbidities: IVH, BPD, sepsis, and NEC status (adjusted OR 10.727, 95% CI 1.922-59.868).
CONCLUSION
As association was observed between head growth catch-up status and developmental outcomes in VLBW infants at 18-24 months of CA. Key clinical factors associated with catch-up status included BPD and NEC status, length of parenteral nutrition, and ventilator care. Further study is needed to establish causality and explore additional factors that may influence developmental outcomes in this population.

INTRODUCTION
Previous studies showed that very preterm children have a delay in communicative (gestures) and linguistic development as compared to full-term children. Earlier use of gestures, as well as of word comprehension and production, have been found to be predictive of subsequent word production and/or language delay in both very preterm and full-term children. Not many studies on communicative antecedents of language, however, have been carried out with low-risk preterm children in comparison to full-term children.
METHODS
In the present study a sample ( = 142) of low-risk preterm children has been followed using the Galician version of the Communicative Development Inventories (CDI) at the ages of 10, 22, and 30 months of age and their results were compared to the results from a sample ( = 49) of full-term children at the same ages. The determinants of language measures (vocabulary and grammar) at 30 months of age have been studied through linear regression analyses.
RESULTS
ANOVA results indicate that there were no significant differences between the groups in any of the measures obtained with the CDI at any time, nor were there any differences in lexical or grammatical developmental trajectories between both groups (repeated measures ANOVA). Linear regression analyses showed that the predictors of language at 30 months of age are somewhat different for the full-term than for the preterm group.
DISCUSSION
While the use of first communicative gestures at 10 months is a predictor of word production at 30 months of age for the full-term group, participation in games and routines seems to play a significant predictive role for preterm children. Word production at 22 months is the factor with a major incidence on word production at the age of 30 months for both groups. Previous specific measures of grammatical development have a clear determinant role in grammar measures at 30 months of age for the full-term children, while in the case of preterm children previous lexical development seems to be more relevant.

Health-related quality of life of mothers and developmental characteristics of very low birth weight children at 2.5 years of age: results from the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS).
BACKGROUND
The level of child development may be associated with the risk of poor maternal health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The objective of this study was to describe the developmental characteristics of very low birth weight (VLBW) children at 2.5 years of age and to examine associations between maternal HRQoL and the degree of child development based on the Japanese version of Ages and Stages Questionnaire (J-ASQ-3).
METHODS
A cross-sectional study was performed using the data from a nationwide prospective birth cohort study in Japan. Among a total of 104,062 fetal records, the VLBW infants (birth weight ≤ 1500 g) were analyzed using linear regression models, adjusted for potential covariates. Subgroup analysis was also conducted to assess the association between social connection or cooperation of the partner and maternal HRQoL by the level of child development.
RESULTS
The final study subjects included 357 VLBW children and mothers. The suspected developmental delays (SDDs) in at least two domains was significantly associated with lower maternal mental HRQoL regression coefficient -2.314 (95%CI: -4.065 to -0.564). There was no association between the status of child development and maternal physical HRQoL. After adjusting for child and maternal covariates, the maternal HRQoL was not significantly associated with child development. Amongst women who indicated having some social support, having a child with a SDD in two or more domains was negatively associated with mental HRQoL compared with women whose child was less developmental delay, regression coefficient -2.337 (95%CI: -3.961 to -0.714). Amongst women who indicated having partner's cooperation to child-rearing, having a child with a SDD in two or more domains was negatively associated with mental HRQoL compared with women whose child was less developmental delay, regression coefficient -3.785 (95%CI: -6.647 to -0.924).
CONCLUSIONS
Our findings indicate that the lower maternal mental HRQoL was independently associated with the SDDs evaluated by the J-ASQ-3, whereas there was no association after adjusting for covariates. Further research is warranted to elucidate the impact of social connection and partner's cooperation on maternal HRQoL and child development. This study urges that particular attention should be paid to mothers of VLBW children with SDDs and also to provide early intervention and continued support.

BACKGROUND
Little comparative data on substance use (SU) between sexual minority youth (SMY) and heterosexual youth (HET) is available. This study compares the prevalence of SU in an urban cohort between SMY and HET and evaluates demographic and psychosocial predictors of SU.
METHODS
Data came from a prospective-longitudinal cohort study in an urban setting (N = 1297). SU and psychosocial variables such as internalizing symptoms, self-control, sensation-seeking, bullying-victimization, subjective stress, leisure activities, and peer influences were assessed with self-reports at age 17 and 20. SU was stratified by sex and sexual attraction, and the groups were compared using regression models, with demographic and psychosocial variables included as covariates.
RESULTS
SMY- and HET-youth displayed differences in a number of psychosocial variables. Overall, SMY- and HET-youth differed in their 12-months prevalence of SU: At age 17, SMY-females had significantly higher rates of SU than HET-females for cannabis (aOR = 2.14, p = 0.04), ecstasy/MDMA (aOR = 4.29, p = 0.01), and hallucinogens (aOR = 5.59, p = 0.02). At age 20, SMY-females had significantly higher rates of SU than HET-females for tobacco (aOR = 2.06, p = 0.03), cannabis (aOR = 2.24, p = 0.004), ecstasy/MDMA (aOR = 3.93, p < 0.001), stimulants (aOR = 3.45, p = 0.002), and hallucinogens (aOR = 6.65, p < 0.001). SMY-males reported significantly lower rates for tobacco and cannabis than HET-males at age 17. At age 20, they reported significantly higher rates for the use of ecstasy/MDMA (aOR = 2.30, p = 0.04) and hallucinogens (aOR = 2.43, p = 0.03).
CONCLUSIONS
Given that psychosocial variables were significant covariates of SMY-status and SU, our results underline the importance of accounting for these when explaining differences in SU between adolescents. While differentiation by sex is established in most studies, such standardized comparisons are lacking with regards to sexual identities. But knowledge about SU of SMY is critical for designing effective interventions. This is especially true for SMY-females: Thus, SU in SMY-females early in life needs to be explored more thoroughly and addressed with adequate prevention measures.

BACKGROUND
Prenatal exposure to metal elements has been reported as a potential risk factor for congenital malformation. However, studies on the relationship with congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) are very scarce.
METHODS
Participants of a prospective cohort from the Japan Environment and Children's Study, conducted at 15 research centers, were recruited between January 2011 and March 2014. The exposure factors were concentrations of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), selenium (Se), and manganese (Mn) measured from maternal whole blood in the second or third trimester. The primary outcome was CAKUT diagnosed during the first three years of life, which was classified into isolated cases and complicated cases accompanied by extrarenal congenital defects. To conduct a nested case-control design within the cohort, we selected 351 isolated cases with 1404 matched controls, and 79 complicated cases with 316 matched controls.
RESULTS
A logistic regression model was used to examine the associations between individual metal concentrations and each subtype of CAKUT. A higher level of Se was associated with an increased risk of isolated CAKUT (adjusted odds ratio [95 % confidence interval]: 3.22 [1.33-7.77]). Meanwhile, higher levels of Pb and Mn were associated with a reduced risk of the complicated subtype (0.46 [0.24-0.90] and 0.33 [0.15-0.73], respectively). A Bayesian kernel machine regression model accounting for mixed effects of multiple metals further demonstrated that a higher level of Mn alone was significantly associated with a reduced occurrence of the complicated subtype.
CONCLUSIONS
Using a stringent statistical approach, the present study demonstrated that a higher Mn concentration in the maternal blood was associated with a lower risk of complicated CAKUT in offspring. Further cohort and experimental studies are needed to verify the clinical impact of this finding.

OBJECTIVE
The aim of this paper is to investigate the risk factors associated with intraoperative brain bulge (IOBB), especially the computed tomography (CT) value of the diseased lateral transverse sinus, and to develop a reliable predictive model to alert neurosurgeons to the possibility of IOBB.
METHODS
A retrospective analysis was performed on 937 patients undergoing traumatic decompressive craniectomy. A total of 644 patients from Fuzong Clinical Medical College of Fujian Medical University were included in the development cohort, and 293 patients from the First Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College were included in the external validation cohort. Univariate and multifactorial logistic regression analyses identified independent risk factors associated with IOBB. The logistic regression models consisted of independent risk factors, and receiver operating characteristic curves, calibration, and decision curve analyses were used to assess the performance of the models. Various machine learning models were used to compare with the logistic regression model and analyze the importance of the factors, which were eventually jointly developed into a dynamic nomogram for predicting IOBB and published online in the form of a simple calculator.
RESULTS
IOBB occurred in 93/644 (14.4%) patients in the developmental cohort and 47/293 (16.0%) in the validation cohort. Univariate and multifactorial regression analyses showed that age, subdural hematoma, contralateral fracture, brain contusion, and CT value of the diseased lateral transverse sinus were associated with IOBB. A logistic regression model (full model) consisting of the above risk factors had excellent predictive power in both the development cohort [area under the curve (AUC)=0.930] and the validation cohort (AUC=0.913). Among the four machine learning models, the AdaBoost model showed the best predictive value (AUC=0.998). Factors in the AdaBoost model were ranked by importance and combined with the full model to create a dynamic nomogram for clinical application, which was published online as a practical and easy-to-use calculator.
CONCLUSIONS
The CT value of the diseased lateral transverse is an independent risk factor and a reliable predictor of IOBB. The online dynamic nomogram formed by combining logistic regression analysis models and machine learning models can more accurately predict the possibility of IOBBs in patients undergoing traumatic decompressive craniectomy.

Psychosocial determinants associated with healthcare workers' self-reported compliance with infection prevention and control during the COVID-19 pandemic: a cross-sectional study in Dutch residential care facilities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
BACKGROUND
Healthcare workers' (HCWs) compliance with infection prevention and control (IPC) is crucial to reduce the infection transmission risk. However, HCWs' compliance with IPC in residential care facilities (RCFs) for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) is known to be suboptimal. Therefore, this study examined sociodemographic and psychosocial determinants associated with IPC non-compliance in this setting, to inform IPC policy and promotion programmes for adequate IPC behaviour.
METHODS
An online questionnaire was administered to 285 HCWs from 16 RCFs between March 2021 and March 2022. Determinants associated with IPC non-compliance were assessed using logistic regression analyses.
RESULTS
Being a woman (OR: 3.57; 1.73-7.37), and being a non-medical professional were associated with increased odds of non-compliance (social workers, OR: 2.83; 1.65-4.85; behavioural specialists, OR: 6.09; 1.98-18.72). Perceived inadequate education/training (aOR: 1.62; 1.15-2.27) and perceived time constraints/competing priorities (aOR: 1.43; 1.03-1.98) were also associated with increased odds of non-compliance, independent of sociodemographic variables. In contrast, the belief that the supervisor complies with IPC (descriptive norm supervisor) was associated with decreased odds of non-compliance (aOR: 0.60; 0.41-0.88).
CONCLUSIONS
To improve IPC in disability care settings, the implementation of tailored and structural IPC education and training programmes (e.g., on-the-job training) is recommended to increase HCWs' capabilities and bridge the IPC compliance gap between medical and non-medical professionals. In addition, role models, particularly supervisors, are crucial for promoting IPC behaviour. Facilities should create a culture of IPC compliance by norm setting, acting on, and modelling IPC behaviours at all levels of the organisation (management, medical, and non-medical staff).

Classic life history theory makes generalized predictions about phenotypic correlations across large clades. Modern comparative tests of these correlations account for the underlying structure of phylogenetic trees. Yet neither life history theory nor phylogenetic comparative methods automatically specify how biological mechanisms generate correlations. This problem is evident in comparative analyses of birds. Birds show a correlation between body size and age at first reproduction, but do not actually grow larger if they delay reproduction. Instead, field studies raise the hypothesis that social contexts-especially cooperative breeding, coloniality, and lekking-generate unique demands for behavioral development, which in turn result in delayed reproduction. Here, we support that hypothesis with a comparative dataset spanning 961 species in 155 avian families. Continuous (Ornstein-Uhlenbeck), discrete (hidden state Markov), and phylogenetic regression models revealed delayed reproduction in colonial birds, a weaker signal in cooperative birds, and the consistent evolution of sexual bimaturism in polygynous, lekking birds. These results show an association between diverse social contexts, sex-specific developmental demands, and life history evolution in birds. Considering this diversity, we discuss how even statistically powerful phylogenetic correlations-whether focused on mass, lifespan, or broad social categories-can ultimately fail to model the history of life history evolution.

INTRODUCTION
Social media use (SMU) is highly prevalent amongst young people and previous research suggests an association with mental health problems, including poor body image. However, the potential relationship between SMU and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) has received little attention. Furthermore, little is known about the factors that moderate the potential association between SMU and body dysmorphic symptoms. The current study tested the associations between three facets of SMU and body dysmorphic symptoms and explored perfectionism as a moderator in a non-clinical sample.
METHOD
Two-hundred and nine 16-18-year-olds (mean age = 16.5 years, 37% male) recruited from schools in London completed an online survey measuring aspects of SMU, including: frequency of image-and text-based SMU; motivations for SMU (appearance, popularity, connection or values and interests); and active and passive SMU. Participants additionally completed validated measures of body dysmorphic symptoms, perfectionism, and anxiety/depressive symptoms. Linear regression models tested the association of body dysmorphic symptoms with different facets of SMU, with and without adjustment for age, sex and anxiety/depressive symptoms.
RESULTS
Frequency of use of image-based, but not text-based, platforms was significantly and positively associated with body dysmorphic symptoms, and this association remained significant in the adjusted models. Appearance-based motivation for SMU was the only motivator uniquely associated with body dysmorphic symptoms across the unadjusted and adjusted models. Passive, not active, SMU was associated with body dysmorphic symptoms in unadjusted models, but this association became non-significant in the adjusted models. Self-oriented perfectionism moderated the association between frequency of image-based SMU and body dysmorphic symptoms.
DISCUSSION
Image-based SMU, and appearance-based motivations for SMU, are positively associated with body dysmorphic symptoms. Self-oriented perfectionism may amplify the relationship between SMU and body dysmorphic symptoms. Our findings highlight the importance of a nuanced approach to examining SMU, and the need for further research to determine whether specific facets of SMU contribute to the development and/or maintenance of body dysmorphic symptoms.
