BACKGROUND
Cannabis use disorder (CUD) is increasingly common and contributes to a range of health and social problems. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid recognised for its anticonvulsant, anxiolytic and antipsychotic effects with no habit-forming qualities. Results from a Phase IIa randomised clinical trial suggest that treatment with CBD for four weeks reduced non-prescribed cannabis use in people with CUD. This study examines the efficacy, safety and quality of life of longer-term CBD treatment for patients with moderate-to-severe CUD.
METHODS/DESIGN
A phase III multi-site, randomised, double-blinded, placebo controlled parallel design of a 12-week course of CBD to placebo, with follow-up at 24 weeks after enrolment. Two hundred and fifty adults with moderate-to-severe CUD (target 20% Aboriginal), with no significant medical, psychiatric or other substance use disorders from seven drug and alcohol clinics across NSW and VIC, Australia will be enrolled. Participants will be administered a daily dose of either 4 mL (100 mg/mL) of CBD or a placebo dispensed every 3-weeks. All participants will receive four-sessions of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) based counselling. Primary endpoints are self-reported cannabis use days and analysis of cannabis metabolites in urine. Secondary endpoints include severity of CUD, withdrawal severity, cravings, quantity of use, motivation to stop and abstinence, medication safety, quality of life, physical/mental health, cognitive functioning, and patient treatment satisfaction. Qualitative research interviews will be conducted with Aboriginal participants to explore their perspectives on treatment.
DISCUSSION
Current psychosocial and behavioural treatments for CUD indicate that over 80% of patients relapse within 1-6 months of treatment. Pharmacological treatments are highly effective with other substance use disorders but there are no approved pharmacological treatments for CUD. CBD is a promising candidate for CUD treatment due to its potential efficacy for this indication and excellent safety profile. The anxiolytic, antipsychotic and neuroprotective effects of CBD may have added benefits by reducing many of the mental health and cognitive impairments reported in people with regular cannabis use.

Cannabis can be related to respiratory diseases, but the relationship between smoking marijuana and the development of a pneumothorax has scarcely been investigated. We aimed to analyze, in patients with a history of cannabis smoking abuse submitted to lung apicectomy for a primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP), the correlation between the presence of cannabinoids in the resected lung and the detection of bullous emphysema within the same tissue. Patients undergoing lung apicectomy for a PSP were prospectively enrolled, and the correlation between the presence of cannabinoids in the resected lung tissue and histological finding of bullous emphysema was investigated with Fisher's exact test. There were 21 male patients, with a median age of 27 years. The cannabinoids found by the toxicological examination in surgical specimens were mainly delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabinol (CBN), and cannabidiol (CBD). In 14/21 patients, cannabinoids were detected in the resected lung tissue, and bullous emphysema was present in 13/14 of these (93%), while bullous emphysema was found in only 1/7 (14%) of the remaining patients who were negative for cannabinoids in the lung tissue, and the difference was found to be statistically significant ( < 0.0009). Our study demonstrated the presence of bullous emphysema in most cannabinoid-positive patients and its absence in most of those who were cannabinoid-negative, supporting the correlation between cannabinoids in the lung tissue and bullous emphysema with the development of a "secondary" spontaneous pneumothorax.

BACKGROUND
Cannabis is the most commonly used recreational drug in the USA. Studies evaluating cannabis use and its impact on outcomes following cervical spinal fusion (CF) are limited. This study sought to assess the impact of isolated (exclusive) cannabis use on postoperative outcomes following CF by analyzing outcomes like complications, readmissions, and revisions.
METHODS
The New York Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System (SPARCS) was queried for patients who underwent CF between January 2009 and September 2013. Inclusion criteria were age ≥18 years and either a minimum 90-day (for complications and readmissions) or 2-year (for revisions) follow-up surveillance. Patients with systemic disease, osteomyelitis, cancer, trauma, and concomitant substance or polysubstance abuse/dependence were excluded. Patients with a preoperative International Classification of Diseases, 9th Edition, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) diagnosis of isolated cannabis abuse (Cannabis) or dependence were identified. The primary outcome measures were 90-day complications, 90-day readmissions, and two-year revisions following CF. Cannabis patients were 1:1 propensity score-matched by age, gender, race, Deyo score, surgical approach, and tobacco use to non-cannabis users and compared for outcomes. Multivariate binary stepwise logistic regression models identified independent predictors of outcomes.
RESULTS
432 patients (n=216 each) with comparable age, sex, Deyo scores, tobacco use, and distribution of anterior or posterior surgical approaches were identified (all p>0.05). Cannabis patients were predominantly Black (27.8% vs. 12.0%), primarily utilized Medicaid (29.6% vs. 12.5%), and had longer LOS (3.0 vs. 1.9 days), all p≤0.001. Both cohorts experienced comparable rates of 90-day medical and surgical, as well as overall complications (5.6% vs. 3.7%) and two-year revisions (4.2% vs. 2.8%, p=0.430), but isolated cannabis patients had higher 90-day readmission rates (11.6% vs. 6.0%, p=0.042). Isolated cannabis use independently predicted 90-day readmission (Odds Ratio=2.0), but did not predict any 90-day complications or two year revisions (all p>0.05).
CONCLUSION
Isolated baseline cannabis dependence/abuse was associated with increased risk of 90-day readmission following CF. Further investigation of the physiologic impact of cannabis on musculoskeletal patients may elucidate significant contributory factors. .

Weeds are one of the greatest threats to the growth of rice, and the loss of crops is greater in the early stage of rice growth. Traditional large-area spraying cannot selectively spray weeds and can easily cause herbicide waste and environmental pollution. To realize the transformation from large-area spraying to precision spraying in rice fields, it is necessary to quickly and efficiently detect the distribution of weeds. Benefiting from the rapid development of vision technology and deep learning, this study applies a computer vision method based on deep-learning-driven rice field weed target detection. To address the need to identify small dense targets at the rice seedling stage in paddy fields, this study propose a method for weed target detection based on YOLOX, which is composed of a CSPDarknet backbone network, a feature pyramid network (FPN) enhanced feature extraction network and a YOLO Head detector. The CSPDarknet backbone network extracts feature layers with dimensions of 80 pixels ⊆ 80 pixels, 40 pixels ⊆ 40 pixels and 20 pixels ⊆ 20 pixels. The FPN fuses the features from these three scales, and YOLO Head realizes the regression of the object classification and prediction boxes. In performance comparisons of different models, including YOLOv3, YOLOv4-tiny, YOLOv5-s, SSD and several models of the YOLOX series, namely, YOLOX-s, YOLOX-m, YOLOX-nano, and YOLOX-tiny, the results show that the YOLOX-tiny model performs best. The mAP, F1, and recall values from the YOLOX-tiny model are 0.980, 0.95, and 0.983, respectively. Meanwhile, the intermediate variable memory generated during the model calculation of YOLOX-tiny is only 259.62 MB, making it suitable for deployment in intelligent agricultural devices. However, although the YOLOX-tiny model is the best on the dataset in this paper, this is not true in general. The experimental results suggest that the method proposed in this paper can improve the model performance for the small target detection of sheltered weeds and dense weeds at the rice seedling stage in paddy fields. A weed target detection model suitable for embedded computing platforms is obtained by comparing different single-stage target detection models, thereby laying a foundation for the realization of unmanned targeted herbicide spraying performed by agricultural robots.

Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) are vital soil organisms well-known to damage and reduce crop yield worldwide. Surveys were attempts to determine the impact of weed species on the communities and composition of nematodes in barley, wheat, quinoa, eggplant, and tomato crops in Alexandria and Ismailia regions of Egypt. During the surveys, eight occurring genera of nematodes were found namely; Meloidogyne spp, Pratylenchus spp, Helicotylenchus spp, Rotylenchulus spp, Xiphinema spp, Criconemoides spp, Ditylenchus spp, and Longidorus spp associated with the soil's rhizosphere of 28 weed species belonging to 12 families. Among these weeds, Hordeum marinum and Sonchus oleraceus were good hosts to nematode species. Both wheat and barley had higher nematode diversity than quinoa in the winter season. Pratylenchus spp, Meloidogyne spp and Rotylenchulus spp can be considered vital potential PPNs with economic importance. Nematode abundances and structural indices varied greatly based on the host weed species, crop types and soil characteristics. A positive correlation was monitored among weeds, nematode frequencies and relative abundances as well as their crops. Finally, weed species are critical components in nematode communities that may increase the incidence and severity of nematode risks based on crop type and soil characteristics. Therefore weeds should be managed properly to diminish reservoir sites when developing nematode management options.

BACKGROUND
Canada legalized recreational cannabis in 2018, and one of the primary objectives of the Cannabis Act was to protect youth by reducing their access to cannabis and providing public education. Canada has the highest prevalence of cannabis use worldwide, particularly among youth and young adults under the age of 25. Cannabis use is linked with many adverse effects for youth and young adults including psychosis, anxiety, depression, respiratory distress, cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, and impaired cognitive performance. Despite the high prevalence of cannabis use and the evolution of policies in Canada and globally, significant knowledge and research gaps remain regarding youth and young adult cannabis use. The aim of this scoping review is to map the extent, nature, and range of evidence available on youth and young adult cannabis use in Canada since its legalization, in order to strengthen policies, services, treatments, training, and public education strategies.
METHODS
Using a scoping review framework developed by Arksey and O'Malley, along with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, we conducted a rigorous search in five academic databases: MEDLINE, Embase, APA PsycINFO, CINAHL and Web of Science Core Collection. We included empirical studies that collected data in Canada after the legalization of recreational cannabis (October 2018) and focused on youth or young adults < 30. Two reviewers independently screened articles in two stages and extracted relevant information from articles meeting the inclusion criteria.
RESULTS
Of the 47 articles meeting our inclusion criteria, 92% used quantitative methods, 6% were qualitative, and 2% used a mixed-methods approach. Over two-thirds (68%) used secondary data. These studies were categorized into six focus areas: (1) prevalence, patterns, and trends, (2) cannabis-related injuries and emergency department (ED) visits, (3) rates and patterns during the pandemic, (4) perceptions of cannabis use, (5) prevention tools, and (6) cannabis-related offenses. Key findings from the studies reviewed include an increase in cannabis use among 18-24-year-olds post-legalization, with mixed results for youth under 18. ED visits for intentional and unintentional cannabis-related injuries have increased in young children and teens. Perception studies show a mix of concern and normalization of cannabis use. Though limited, prevention studies are promising in raising awareness. A decline in cannabis-related offenses was noted by one study. The review highlights several research gaps, including the need for more qualitative data, disaggregation of demographic data, intervention research, and comprehensive studies on the physical and mental health impacts of cannabis use among youth and young adults.
CONCLUSION
Maintaining a public health approach is critical, with a focus on reducing the high prevalence of cannabis use among youth and young adults. This involves implementing prevention strategies to minimize harms, enhancing public education, minimizing commercialization, reducing youth access to cannabis, promoting guidelines for lower-risk cannabis use and harm reduction strategies, and increasing training for healthcare providers.

BACKGROUND
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is the range of sexually, psychologically and physically coercive acts used against adult and adolescent women by a current or former male partner. It is a major public health problem globally. This study determined the prevalence, patterns and predictors of IPV amongst female undergraduates in Abia State.
METHODS
A cross-sectional study was conducted from January - February 2022 amongst 306 female undergraduates in Abia State. A mixed method of an online structured questionnaire created on Google forms & onsite self-administered questionnaire were deployed for data collection. Descriptive, bivariate and multivariate analyses were done using IBM SPSS Version 26.0. The level of significance was set at 5%.
RESULTS
A total of 306 respondents participated in the survey. The overall prevalence of IPV amongst female undergraduates was 51.2% (95% CI: 44.8-57.6%). Emotional abuse was the most common form of abuse 78.9%, followed by Physical abuse 42.0% and Sexual abuse 30.8%. Predictors of IPV reported include female earning/receiving more than their partner monthly (aOR = 2.30; 95% CI: 1.20-4.41); male (partner) alcohol consumption (aOR = 5.17; 95% CI: 2.46-10.88), being a smoker of cigarette/marijuana (aOR = 11.01; 95% CI: 1.26-96.25) and having witnessed domestic violence as a child (aOR = 3.55; 95% CI: I.56-8.07). Adverse effects such as unwanted pregnancies (12%), miscarriages (10%), eating/sleeping disorders (21%) and bruises (23%) amongst others were noted in some of the victims.
CONCLUSION
Over half of all female undergraduates in Abia State have experienced IPV with emotional abuse being the commonest. Some Individual and relationship factors were identified as predictors of IPV. We recommend intensifying primary prevention campaigns against risk factors identified like smoking and alcohol consumption.

Illicit drug use is a significant public health problem. Studies have shown a high prevalence of cocaine and cannabis use in transgender women (TGW).
OBJECTIVE
To describe the consumption patterns of cannabis and cocaine/crack use and variables associated with their use in TGW in Central Brazil.
METHODS
A cross-sectional study was conducted on TGW in Goiás, Brazil. Participants were recruited using a respondent-driven sampling method and were interviewed face-to-face about cannabis and crack-cocaine and the variables associated with them. The Alcohol Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test was used to assess substance use. Unweighted logistic regression was used to identify variables associated with cannabis and crack cocaine use. P-values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant.
RESULTS
A total of 440 transgender women participated in the study. Their median age was 25 years (interquartile range: 20.5-29.5 years). Most participants were single (85.5%) and had engaged in sex work in their lifetime (58.6%). Cannabis was reported by 68.9% and 53.4% of participants in their lifetime and in the past three months, respectively, and cocaine/crack use was reported by 59.8% and 44.1% of participants in their lifetime and the past three months, respectively. Of the participants, 10.2% reported high-risk cannabis use, and 9.1% reported high-risk cocaine/crack use. Furthermore, 35% of participants reported using both drugs. Previous physical violence (Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR): 2.37), inconsistent condom uses during anal sex (AOR: 2.17), and moderate-/high-risk cocaine/crack use (AOR: 3.14) were associated with high-risk cannabis use. Previous sexual violence (AOR: 2.84), previous STI (AOR: 2.90), moderate-/high-risk cannabis (AOR: 3.82), and binge drinking (AOR; 3.28) were associated with high-risk cocaine/crack use.
CONCLUSION
Our study found a high frequency, significant overlap in the use of cannabis and cocaine/crack use and violence associated with these drugs consumption among TGW, highlighting the urgent need for health policies for drug disorders among this socially marginalized group.

The prevalence of cannabis use disorders has become a noteworthy global public health issue. Understanding the neurobiological factors associated with cannabis use disorder (CUD) is crucial for creating effective interventions. One such factor, the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), has been linked to the onset and persistence of addictive behaviors. This systematic review aims to summarize the existing literature on BDNF levels in individuals with CUD to provide a comprehensive overview of the current evidence. A systematic search was conducted using electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus) for relevant studies. The search approach yielded a total of 785 articles, with 559 located in the PubMed database and 226 in Scopus. Studies reporting BDNF levels in individuals with CUD compared to healthy controls were included in this study. Ultimately, eight articles were included in this systematic review. The primary emphasis of these studies was on individuals who were cannabis users or had a dependency on cannabis. There is considerable variation in the estimated effect size among included studies due to heterogeneity; hence, a random effect model was used for meta-analysis. The findings of our study suggest that the effect size of BDNF levels was 0.25 with 95% CI (-0.55; 1.05) in cannabis users, which was not statistically significant (p-value=0.54). Therefore, it is important to interpret the results with caution, and additional research is warranted to investigate the potential factors contributing to this heterogeneity.
