Lean muscle mass (LMM) is an important aspect of human health. Temporalis muscle thickness is a promising LMM marker but has had limited utility due to its unknown normal growth trajectory and reference ranges and lack of standardized measurement. Here, we develop an automated deep learning pipeline to accurately measure temporalis muscle thickness (iTMT) from routine brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We apply iTMT to 23,876 MRIs of healthy subjects, ages 4 through 35, and generate sex-specific iTMT normal growth charts with percentiles. We find that iTMT was associated with specific physiologic traits, including caloric intake, physical activity, sex hormone levels, and presence of malignancy. We validate iTMT across multiple demographic groups and in children with brain tumors and demonstrate feasibility for individualized longitudinal monitoring. The iTMT pipeline provides unprecedented insights into temporalis muscle growth during human development and enables the use of LMM tracking to inform clinical decision-making.

INTRODUCTION
Sarcopenia is loss of both muscle mass and function with age and is associated with inadequate protein intake. However, evidence to suggest an association with oral health is less clear.
OBJECTIVE
To scope peer-reviewed published evidence (2000-2022) pertaining to oral function in relation to sarcopenia and/or protein intake in older people.
METHODS
CINAHL, Embase, PubMed, and Scopus were searched. Included were peer-reviewed studies measuring oral function (e.g., tooth loss, salivary flow masticatory function, strength of muscles of mastication, and tongue pressure) and a measure of protein intake and/or a measure of sarcopenia (appendicular muscle mass function). Full article screening was conducted by 1 reviewer with a random 10% screened in duplicate by a second reviewer. Relevant content pertaining to study type, country of origin, measures of exposure, and outcomes and key findings was mapped and the balance of data showing a positive versus null association of oral health with outcomes charted.
RESULTS
Of 376 studies identified, 126 were screened in full, yielding 32 included texts, of which 29 were original articles. Seven reported intake of protein and 22 reported measures of sarcopenia. Nine distinct oral health exposures were identified, with ≤4 studies relating to any one of these measures. Most data were cross-sectional in nature (27 studies) and from Japan (20 studies). The balance of data showed associations between tooth loss and measures of sarcopenia and protein intake. However, the balance of data pertaining to any association between chewing function, tongue pressure, or indices of oral hypofunction and sarcopenia was mixed.
CONCLUSION
A broad range of oral health measures have been studied in relation to sarcopenia. The balance of data suggests that tooth loss is associated with risk, but data pertaining to the oral musculature and indices of oral hypofunction are mixed.
KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER STATEMENT
The findings of this research will increase awareness among clinicians of the amount and nature of evidence pertaining to the relationship between oral health and risk of compromised muscle mass and function, including data showing that loss of teeth is associated with increased risk of sarcopenia in older people. The findings highlight to researchers the gaps in the evidence and where further research and clarification of the relationship between oral health and risk of sarcopenia is warranted.

Occlusal stabilization splints are the most common treatment for controlling the deleterious effects of sleep bruxism. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a low-cost, mixed occlusal splint (MOS) compared to that of a rigid splint. A randomized clinical trial was performed on 43 adults of both sexes with possible sleep bruxism and satisfactory dental conditions. They were divided into rigid occlusal splint (ROS) (n = 23) and MOS (n = 20) groups. Masticatory muscle and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain intensity (visual analog scale), quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF), indentations in the oral mucosa, anxiety, and depression (HADS), number of days of splint use, and splint wear were evaluated. All variables were evaluated at baseline (T0), 6 months (T6), and 12 months (T12) after splint installation (T0), and splint wear was evaluated at T6 and T12. Student's t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, non-parametric Friedman's analysis of variance for paired samples and pairwise multiple comparisons, Pearson's chi-square test, two-proportion z-test, non-parametric McNemar's and Cochran's Q, and Wilcoxon tests were used (p < 0.05). In both groups, there was a decrease in TMJ pain and pain intensity over time and improvements in the quality of life scores. At T6, there was a higher rate of splint wear in the MOS group than in the ROS group (p = 0.023). The MOS showed a higher rate of wear than the rigid splint but had similar results for the other variables. Therefore, the use of a mixed splint appears to be effective in controlling the signs and symptoms of sleep bruxism.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) consists of bone, cartilage, ligaments, and associated masticatory muscles and tendons that coordinate to enable mastication in mammals. The TMJ is innervated by the trigeminal nerve (CNV), containing axons of motor and somatosensory neurons. Somatosensation includes touch, temperature, proprioception, and pain that enables mammals to recognize and react to stimuli for survival. The somatosensory innervation of the TMJ remains poorly defined. Disorders of the TMJ (TMD) are of diverse etiology and presentation. Some known symptoms associated with TMD include facial, shoulder, or neck pain, jaw popping or clicking, headaches, toothaches, and tinnitus. Acute or chronic pain in TMD stems from the activation of somatosensory nociceptors. Treatment of TMD may involve over- the-counter and prescription medication, nonsurgical treatments, and surgical treatments. In many cases, treatment achieves only a temporary relief of symptoms including pain. We suggest that defining the sensory innervation of the temporomandibular joint and its associated tissues with a specific focus on the contribution of peripheral innervation to the development of chronic pain could provide insights into the origins of joint pain and facilitate the development of improved analgesics and treatments for TMD.

To compare masticatory muscle thickness in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) during rest and clenching, and by body position, using ultrasonography. This prospective study included 96 patients with TMD (67 females, 29 males; mean age: 40.41 ± 17.88 years): group 1, comprising 66 patients with TMD without bruxism (TMD_nonbruxer), and group 2, comprising 30 patients with concurrent TMD and bruxism (TMD_bruxer). In patients with TMD, bruxism was correlated with the presence of tinnitus, muscle stiffness, sleep problems, psychological stress, and restricted mouth opening. The masseter muscle significantly thickened during clenching (11.16 ± 3.03 mm vs 14.04 ± 3.47 mm, p < 0.001), whereas the temporalis muscle showed no significant increase in thickness from resting to clenching in an upright position (7.91 ± 1.98 vs 8.39 ± 2.08, p = 0.103). Similarly, during clenching in the supine position, the masseter muscle was significantly thicker compared with rest (11.24 ± 2.42 vs 13.49 ± 3.09, p < 0.001), but no significant difference was observed in temporal muscle thickness (8.21 ± 2.16 vs 8.43 ± 1.94, p = 0.464). In comparison between two groups, the average thickness of the masseter muscle was greater among TMD_bruxers than among TMD_nonbruxers in both the upright and supine positions (all p < 0.05). In the generalized lineal model, female sex (B = - 1.018, 95% confidence interval [CI] - 1.855 to - 0.181, p = 0.017) and bruxism (B = 0.868, 95% CI 0.567 to 1.169, p = 0.048) significantly predicted changes in masseter muscle thickness. Female sex (B = - 0.201, 95% CI - 0.299 to - 0.103, p = 0.011), increased age (B = - 0.003, 95% CI - 0.005 to 0.000, p = 0.038), and muscle stiffness (B = - 1.373, 95% CI - 2.369 to - 0.376, p = 0.007) were linked to decreased temporal muscle thickness. Comparing TMD nonbruxer and bruxer muscle thicknesses in upright and supine positions revealed significant increased thickness in the masseter muscle during clenching but not in the temporalis muscle. Masseter muscle thickness varied significantly by sex, body position, and resting/clenching, notably influenced by bruxism. These findings emphasize the relevance of these factors in clinical examinations of patients with TMD.

Effect of physiotherapeutic procedures on the bioelectric activity of the masseter muscle and the range of motion of the temporomandibular joints in the female population with chronic pain: a randomized controlled trial.
INTRODUCTION
Physical therapy (PT) methods applied in dentistry are increasingly discussed nowadays. Taking into account a rapidly growing number of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and orofacial pain patients, it is reasonable to determine which of the available physiotherapeutic (PT) methods are more effective than others, especially in terms of their possible analgesic and myorelaxant effects.
OBJECTIVE
To assess manual and physical factors influencing pain reduction or elimination and increased muscle tension in patients with TMD; yet the influence of the applied forms of PT on the range of motion (ROM) of temporomandibular joints (TMJ).
MATERIAL AND METHODS
A randomized, parallel-group, RCT, single-blind, equi-randomized (1:1) study was conducted in DC/TMD Group Ib patients (20-45 years of age). An experimental group (G1, n = 104) and a control group without TMD (G2, n = 104) were created according to CONSORT guidelines. Diagnostic measurements were performed in both groups (mass sEMG, temporomandibular joint range of motion-ROM, pain intensity - NRS). Group G1 was randomly divided (envelope method) into 4 therapeutic groups, in which therapy was carried out for 10 days: magnetostimulation (MS), magnetoledotherapy (MLE), magnetolaserotherapy (MLA), manual therapy (MT). Each time after the therapy, ROM and NRS measurements were performed, and after the 5th and 10th day sEMG.
RESULTS
Statistically significant differences were found in the sEMG values of the masseter muscles, TMJ ROM and the pain intensity in G1 and G2 (p < 0.00). The largest decrease in sEMG (% MVC) of the masseter muscle occurred in the subgroup in which the manual therapy (MT) procedures were applied, p < 0.000. There was no clinically significant difference in and between other subgroups. There was a distinct mandible ROM increase noted in the MT group, with minimal changes in the MLA and MLE groups and no changes in the MS group. There was a clear increase in the lateral mobility of both right and left TMJ in the MT group. There were no differences in the course of the study in the MS group, and slight increases in the MLA and MLE groups. In the case of pain measurements, the greatest decrease in pain intensity was observed in the MT subgroup.
CONCLUSIONS
According to our results manual therapy is an effective form of treatment in patients with pain, increased masticatory muscle tension and limitation in mandible ROM. Dental physiotherapy should become an integral part of multimodal TMD patients' treatment.

Sarcopenia has been identified as a prognostic factor among certain types of cancer. However, it is unclear whether there is prognostic value of temporalis muscle thickness (TMT), a potential surrogate for sarcopenia, in adults patients with brain tumors. Therefore, we searched the Medline, Embase, and PubMed to systematically review and meta-analyze the relationship between TMT and overall survival, progression-free survival, and complications in patients with brain tumors and the hazard ratio (HR) or odds ratios (OR), and 95% confidence interval (CI) were evaluated. The quality in prognostic studies (QUIPS) instrument was employed to evaluate study quality. Nineteen studies involving 4570 patients with brain tumors were included for qualitative and quantitative analysis. Meta-analysis revealed thinner TMT was associated with poor overall survival (HR, 1.72; 95% CI, 1.45-2.04; P < 0.01) in patients with brain tumors. Sub-analyses showed that the association existed for both primary brain tumors (HR, 2.02; 95% CI, 1.55-2.63) and brain metastases (HR, 1.39; 95% CI, 1.30-1.49). Moreover, thinner TMT also was the independent predictor of progression-free survival in patients with primary brain tumors (HR, 2.88; 95% CI, 1.85-4.46; P < 0.01). Therefore, to improve clinical decision making it is important to integrate TMT assessment into routine clinical settings in patients with brain tumors.

INTRODUCTION
Dental occlusion contributes to the development of temporomandibular disorder.
OBJECTIVE
This case control study examined the influence of different occlusal conditions on the surface electromyography (sEMG) of the superficial part of the masseter muscle (MM) and anterior part of the temporalis muscle (TA) during clenching in the maximum intercuspal position (MIP).
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Twelve healthy subjects had their anterior, right posterior, or left posterior teeth added by composite resin to generate the bilateral posterior, unilateral left, or unilateral right posterior tooth losses, respectively. Muscle activity in the resting stage, MM's and TA's maximum voluntary clenching (MVC; µV) in MIP, each muscle activity's symmetry (%), and ipsilateral MM and TA synergy (%) were measured by sEMG. All parameters were analyzed by SPSS version 23.0, and the significance level was set at p < 0.05.
RESULTS
The MM's and TA's sEMG activity at the resting stage significantly differed from those at the other occlusal conditions (p < 0.05). Both muscles' MVC were highest at the MIP during clenching but lowest during anterior clenching. During unilateral posterior clenching, such MVC was higher at the occluding than at the non-occluding sides. The TA's symmetry during clenching at the anterior and unilateral posterior teeth was lower than that at the MIP during clenching. No significant difference was seen in the ipsilateral MM and TA synergy.
CONCLUSION
Different occlusal conditions influenced the MM's and TA's sEMG activity. Each masticatory muscle responded differently to the same occlusal conditions.

The relationship between temporal muscle thickness and triglyceride glucose index in sarcopenia with mortality and third-month functional outcomes in patients after acute stroke.
Especially in recent years, temporal muscle thickness has been used as an important parameter for sarcopenia in neurological disorders. In addition, triglyceride glucose index was evaluated separately in studies conducted in terms of coronary diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, body mass index and acute stroke. In this clinical study, unlike the others, both temporal muscle thickness and triglyceride glucose index were evaluated together in acute stroke patients in terms of sarcopenia. We aimed to investigate the relationship between temporal muscle thickness and triglyceride glucose index, which is atherosclerotic index, with mortality and 3rd month functional outcomes in acute stroke patients. In this retrospective study, 147 patients admitted to Ankara City Hospital with the diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke between January 2021 and September 2022 were evaluated. Fasting triglyceride glucose indexes of the patients were calculated. The temporal muscle thickness measurement of the patients was performed by the radiologist using computed tomography images. Those who scored 3 or higher on the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) at the third month were considered to have poor functional outcome. A significant cutoff point was found for estimating mortality for the temporal muscle thickness parameter [area under the curve for a receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) = 0.636; P = .012]. The cutoff point was obtained as ≤ 5.2. Sensitivity value was 65%, specificity value was 65%, the positive predictive value (PPV) value was 42.62% and the negative predictive value (NPV) value was 82.28%. Similarly, for the triglyceride glucose index parameter, there was a significant cutoff point in estimating mortality (AUC = 0.673; P = .003). The cutoff point was obtained as ≥ 8.23. Sensitivity value was 91.18%, specificity value was 13%, PPV value was 26.96% and NPV value was 81%. Temporal muscle thickness and triglyceride glucose index parameters were found to be statistically important parameters of sarcopenia. It was concluded that the evaluation of these 2 parameters in terms of both mortality and sarcopenia in acute stroke patients is important in the evaluation of neurological and cardiac disorders.

OBJECTIVE
To compare the effect of percutaneous balloon compression (PBC) and microvascular decompression (MVD) in the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia (TN).
METHODS
Data of 98 patients with TN, admitted to Chenzhou First People's Hospital from May 2020 to May 2022, were retrospectively collected. Patients were divided into two groups based on the surgical method. A total of 53 patients treated with PBC comprised the PBC-group and 45 patients treated with MVD comprised the MVD-group. The immediate pain relief, long-term efficacy, surgical complications, and masticatory muscle strength of the two groups were compared and analyzed.
RESULTS
There was no significant difference in the immediate pain relief and long-term e efficacy, between the two groups (>0.05). Complication rate in the PBC-group was significantly lower than that in the MVD-group (3.77% 17.78%, <0.05). Medical records within 14 days after the operation showed that the incidence of facial numbness and masticatory muscle weakness in the PBC-group were 37.74% and 28.30% respectively, significantly higher than those in MVD-group (4.44% and 2.22%) (<0.05). These symptoms gradually improved three months after the surgery, and were almost completely resolved after six months.
CONCLUSIONS
Compared with MVD, PBC has the same effect in the treatment of TN. PBC is a minimally invasive, safe, and effective method with a low complication rate. Although masticatory muscle strength is slightly impacted by PBC, it gradually recovers within six months after the operation.
