Unveiling antibacterial and antioxidant activities of zinc phosphate-based nanosheets synthesized by Aspergillus fumigatus and its application in sustainable decolorization of textile wastewater.
BACKGROUND
The development of an environment-friendly nanomaterial with promising antimicrobial and antioxidant properties is highly desirable. The decolorization potentiality of toxic dyes using nanoparticles is a progressively serious worldwide issue.
METHODS
The successful biosynthesis of zinc nanoparticles based on phosphates (ZnP-nps) was performed using the extracellular secretions of Aspergillus fumigatus. The antibacterial activity of the biosynthetic ZnP-nps was investigated against Gram-negative bacteria and Gram-positive bacteria using the agar diffusion assay method. The antioxidant property for the biosynthetic nanomaterial was evaluated by DPPH and HO radical scavenging assay.
RESULTS
Remarkable antibacterial and antiradical scavenging activities of ZnP-nps were observed in a dose-dependent manner. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli was 25 µg/ml, however, the MIC for Bacillus subtilis was 12.5 µg/ml. The maximum adsorptive performance of nanomaterial was respectively achieved at initial dye concentration of 200 mg/L and 150 mg/L using methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO), where sorbent dosages were 0.5 g for MB and 0.75 g for MB; pH was 8.0 for MB and 4.0 for MO; temperature was 30 °C; contact time was 120 min. The experimental data was better obeyed with Langmuir's isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R > 0.999). The maximum adsorption capacity (q) of MB and MO dyes on nanomaterial were 178.25 mg/g and 50.10 mg/g, respectively. The regenerated nanomaterial, respectively, persist > 90% and 60% for MB and MO after 6 successive cycles. The adsorption capacity of the prepared zinc phosphate nanosheets crystal toward MB and MO, in the present study, was comparable/superior with other previously engineered adsorbents.
CONCLUSIONS
Based on the above results, the biosynthesized ZnP-nanosheets are promising nanomaterial for their application in sustainable dye decolorization processes and they can be employed in controlling different pathogenic bacteria with a potential application as antiradical scavenging agent. Up to our knowledge, this is probably the first study conducted on the green synthesis of ZnP-nanosheets by filamentous fungus and its significant in sustainable dye decolorization.

Targeted drug delivery to visceral organs offers the possibility of not only limiting the required dose, but also minimizing drug toxicity; however, there is no reliable method for delivering drugs to the surface of visceral organs. Here, we used six color tracers and the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) model to investigate the use of the heteropolysaccharide pectin to facilitate tracer diffusion across the glycocalyceal charge barrier. The color tracers included brilliant blue, Congo red, crystal violet, indocyanine green, methylene blue, and methyl green. The direct application of the tracers to the CAM surface or embedding tracers into linear-chain nanocellulose fiber films resulted in no significant diffusion into the CAM. In contrast, when the tracers were actively loaded into branched-chain pectin films, there was significant detectable diffusion of the tracers into the CAM. The facilitated diffusion was observed in the three cationic tracers but was limited in the three anionic tracers. Diffusion appeared to be dependent on ionic charge, but independent of tracer size or molecular mass. We conclude that dye-loaded pectin films facilitated the diffusion of color tracers across the glycocalyceal charge barrier and may provide a therapeutic path for drug delivery to the surface of visceral organs.

The quality of the Dahongpao mother tree () remains a mystery to this day. In this study, for the first time, the differences between the Dahongpao mother tree (MD) and Dahongpao cuttings (PD), in terms of odor characteristics and taste characteristics were analyzed by metabomics. The results showed that MD had stronger floral, fruity, green, and woody odor characteristics than PD, and that the contributions were mainly from dihydromyrcenol, methyl salicylate, 2-isobutylpyrazine, 1,6-dihydrocarveol, gamma-terpineol, and linalyl acetate. Further, fresh and brisk taste and mellowness taste characteristics of MD were significantly higher than PD, with contributions mainly from amino acids and derivatives and organic acids. Secondly, bitterness taste characteristics of PD were significantly higher than MD, with contributions from phenolic acids, flavones, and flavonols. This study preliminarily unraveled the legend of the superior quality of the Dahongpao mother tree, and also provided an important reference for the breeding of tea-tree cuttings.

Crop fungal diseases pose a serious threat to global crop production and quality. Developing new and efficient fungicides is an important measure to control crop diseases. Phenylthiazole was found to be an excellent antifungal skeleton based on our previous study on the structural optimization and biological activity of the natural product thiasporine A. To find new fungicides, 45 phenylthiazole derivatives containing an acylhydrazone moiety were designed and synthesized by the principle of active substructure splicing. Forty-two of the forty-five compounds are novel, except for compounds , , and . Their structures were structurally characterized by H NMR, C NMR, and HRMS. The antifungal activities of the target compounds against , , and were evaluated at 25 μg/mL. The bioassay results revealed that most of these compounds exhibited excellent antifungal activities against and at 25 μg/mL. In particular, compounds , , , , , , and showed the inhibition rate of more than 80% against , with EC values of 1.66, 2.01, 2.26, 1.45, 1.50, 1.29, and 2.65 μg/mL, respectively, which were superior to that of the commercial fungicides Isoprothiolane (EC = 3.22 μg/mL) and Phenazine-1-carboxylic acid (EC = 27.87 μg/mL). The preliminary structure-activity relationship (SAR) results suggested that introducing methyl, halogen, or methoxy at the ortho-position of R and the para-position of R can endow the final structure with excellent antifungal activity against . The current results provide useful data for developing phenylthiazole derivatives as new fungicides for controlling rice blast caused by .

Zinc oxide nanoparticles have high levels of biocompatibility, a low impact on environmental contamination, and suitable to be used as an ingredient for environmentally friendly skincare products. In this study, biogenically synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles using are used as a reducing and capping agent for topical anti-acne nanogels, and the antimicrobial effect of the nanogel is assessed on and . leaf extract was examined for the presence of secondary metabolites and its total amount of phenolic and flavonoid content was determined. Both the biogenically and chemogenic-synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles were compared using UV-Visible spectrophotometer, FE-SEM, XRD, and FTIR. To produce the topical nanogel, the biogenic and chemogenic zinc oxide nanoparticles were mixed with a carbomer and hydroxypropyl-methyl cellulose (HPMC) polymer. The mixtures were then tested for physical and chemical characteristics. To assess their anti-acne effectiveness, the mixtures were tested against and . The biogenic zinc oxide nanoparticles have particle sizes of 20 nm and a high-phase purity. In comparison to chemogenic nanoparticles, the hydrogels with biogenically synthesized nanoparticles was more effective against Gram-positive bacteria. Through this study, the hybrid nanogels was proven to be effective against the microbes that cause acne and to be potentially used as a green product against skin infections.

Dazomet is a dry powder formulation that releases toxic gas containing methyl isothiocyanate, which controls soil-borne pests and weeds, improving crop yields when applied to moist soils. To explore the efficacy of dazomet fumigation in the cultivation of the perennial herb Codonopsis pilosula, four typical cultivars (G1, G2, W1 and TCK) in Gansu Province were selected for seedling cultivation after soil fumigation (F) by dazomet, and non-fumigated soil was used as a control (CK). The experiments took 2 years to complete. The functional diversity of the soil enzymes and microorganisms, seedling emergence and physiological characteristics, and the quality and yield of Codonopsis seedlings and Radix were assessed. The results showed that the seed emergence rate, seedling re-green rate and several antioxidant enzymatic activities improved in the treatments involving soil fumigation with dazomet, and membrane lipid peroxidation in the seedlings decreased. On average, compared with those of the respective controls, the root viability and yield of the seedlings of the tested cultivars also increased by 34.87% and 42.4%, respectively, and the incidence of root rot in the seedlings was reduced by 83.9%, compared with their respective controls. After harvest, the yield increased by 23.9%, the incidence of root rot decreased by 61.3%, increase in yield and a 61.3% reduction in incidence, and the medicinal materials were determined to be safe and residue-free. The effects of fumigation were cultivar-specific and were especially prominent in G2. Therefore, soil fumigation with dazomet could improve the quality and productivity of Codonopsis pilosula seedlings. Taken together, these findings suggest that when herbs are bred by seedling transplantation, especially cultivars of good quality but poor resistance or species with rare germplasm resources, soil fumigation provides a way to improve cultivation effectiveness and, more importantly, ensures the probability of successfully breeding the species.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) shows excellent chemical and thermal resistance and displays high dielectric strength and unique piezoelectricity, which are enabling for applications in membranes, electric insulators, sensors, or power generators. However, its low polarity and lack of functional groups limit wider applications. While inert, PVDF has been modified by grafting polymer chains by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), albeit via an unclear mechanism, given the strong C-F bonds. Herein, we applied eosin Y and green-light-mediated ATRP to modify PVDF-based materials. The method gave nearly quantitative (meth)acrylate monomer conversions within 2 h without deoxygenation and without the formation of unattached homopolymers, as confirmed by control experiments and DOSY NMR measurements. The gamma distribution model that accounts for broadly dispersed polymers in DOSY experiments was essential and serves as a powerful tool for the analysis of PVDF. The NMR analysis of poly(methyl acrylate) graft chain-ends on PVDF-CTFE (statistical copolymer with chlorotrifluoroethylene) was carried out successfully for the first time and showed up to 23 grafts per PVDF-CTFE chain. The grafting density was tunable depending on the solvent composition and light intensity during the grafting. The initiation proceeded either from the C-Cl sites of PVDF-CTFE or via unsaturations in the PVDF backbones. The dehydrofluorinated PVDF was 20 times more active than saturated PVDF during the grafting. The method was successfully applied to modify PVDF, PVDF-HFP, and Viton A401C. The obtained PVDF-CTFE--PnBMA materials were investigated in more detail. They featured slightly lower crystallinity than PVDF-CTFE (12-18 vs 24.3%) and had greatly improved mechanical performance: Young's moduli of up to 488 MPa, ductility of 316%, and toughness of 46 × 10 J/m.

Choline chloride/urea as a green and efficient deep eutectic solvent in three-component and four-component synthesis of novel pyrazole and pyrano[2,3-c] pyrazole derivatives with antibacterial and antifungal activity.
In this study, choline chloride/urea was used as a green deep eutectic solvent in the three-component reaction of hydrazine/phenylhydrazine, malononitrile, and aromatic aldehydes for synthesizing pyrazole derivatives, and in the four-component reaction of methyl/ethyl acetoacetate, hydrazine/phenylhydrazine, malononitrile, and aromatic aldehydes for synthesizing pyrano[2,3-c]pyrazole derivatives. Elemental analysis, H, and C NMR spectroscopy were used to confirm the structure of the synthesized pyrazole and pyrano[2,3-c] pyrazole derivatives. The antimicrobial effects of the synthesized pyrazole and pyrano[2,3-c] pyrazole derivatives were investigated. In antimicrobial tests, instructions from clinical and laboratory standards institutes were used. Antimicrobial study was done on pathogenic gram-positive and gram-negative species, and specialized aquatic strains and fungal species. Using choline chloride/urea, novel pyrazole derivatives and pyrano[2,3-c]pyrazole derivatives were synthesized, and other derivatives were synthesized with higher efficiency in less time than some previously reported methods. MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) and MBC (minimum bactericidal concentration) obtained for derivatives were higher than some antibiotic drugs. Synthesis and reports of new derivatives of pyrazole and pyrano[2,3-c]pyrazole, and investigation and reports of their antimicrobial properties on gram-positive, gram-negative, and specialized aquatic and fungal species are among the novel and important findings of this study.

An improvement of water supply and sanitation and better management of water resources, especially in terms of water reuse, is one of the priorities of the European Green Deal. In this context, it is crucial to find new strategies to recycle wastewater efficiently in a low-cost and eco-friendly manner. The immobilization of inorganic nanomaterials on polymeric matrices has been drawing a lot of attention in recent years due to the extraordinary properties characterizing the as-obtained nanocomposites. The hybrid materials, indeed, combine the properties of the polymers, such as flexibility, low cost, mechanical stability, high durability, and ease of availability, with the properties of the inorganic counterpart. In particular, if the inorganic fillers are nanostructured photocatalysts, the materials will be able to utilize the energy delivered by light to catalyze chemical reactions for efficient wastewater treatment. Additionally, with the anchoring of the nanomaterials to the polymers, the dispersion of the nanomaterials in the environment is prevented, thus overcoming one of the main limits that impede the application of nanostructured photocatalysts on a large scale. In this work, we will present nanocomposites made of polymers, i.e., polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), and photocatalytic semiconductors, i.e., TiO nanoparticles (Evonik). MoS nanoflakes were also added as co-catalysts to improve the photocatalytic performance of the TiO. The hybrid materials were prepared using the sonication and solution casting method. The nanocomposites were deeply characterized, and their remarkable photocatalytic abilities were evaluated by the degradation of two common water pollutants: methyl orange and diclofenac. The relevance of the obtained results will be discussed, opening the route for the application of these materials in photocatalysis and especially for novel wastewater remediation.
