Gait is a large component and indicator of health. Many factors affect gait including age, disease, and even mood disorders. Few studies have looked at the influence of emotional states on gait. This study aimed to investigate the influence of emotional states on walking performance to understand whether an emotional state may be an important factor to consider when evaluating gait. Thirty-six young adults were recruited (23F, 13M) and performed a neutral baseline condition of walking which included six passes of walking across an 8m walkway (a total of 48m of walking). Participants then completed 6 pseudo-randomized emotional state induction conditions while immersive 360-degree videos were used to induce the following emotional conditions: happiness, excitement, sadness, fear, and anger. Participants viewed the emotion elicitation videos using a virtual reality head-mounted display (HMD), then rated their emotional state using self-assessment manikins and walked (without the HMD) over a pressure sensor walkway. One-way repeated measures ANOVA and pairwise comparisons were used to examine differences in gait parameters across the emotional conditions. Participants walked with significantly reduced step length and speed during the sadness condition compared to the other emotional conditions and the neutral condition. Furthermore, participants adjusted the timing of their walking during the sadness condition and walked with significantly increased step, stance, and swing times compared to other emotional conditions, but not the neutral condition. Step time was significantly reduced during the conditions of excitement and fear compared to the neutral condition. Emotions may impact variety of gait parameters involving pace and rhythm, however have little influence on gait variability and postural control. These results indicate that perhaps the emotions of sadness and excitement should be taken into account as potential confounds for future gait analysis.

Mood swings, or mood variability, are associated with negative mental health outcomes. Since adolescence is a time when mood disorder onset peaks, mood variability during this time is of significant interest. Understanding biological factors that might be associated with mood variability, such as sleep and structural brain development, could elucidate the mechanisms underlying mood and anxiety disorders. Data from the longitudinal Leiden self-concept study (N = 191) over 5 yearly timepoints was used to study the association between sleep, brain structure, and mood variability in healthy adolescents aged 11-21 at baseline in this pre-registered study. Sleep was measured both objectively, using actigraphy, as well as subjectively, using a daily diary self-report. Negative mood variability was defined as day-to-day negative mood swings over a period of 5 days after an MRI scan. It was found that negative mood variability peaked in mid-adolescence in females while it linearly increased in males, and average negative mood showed a similar pattern. Sleep duration (subjective and objective) generally decreased throughout adolescence, with a larger decrease in males. Mood variability was not associated with sleep, but average negative mood was associated with lower self-reported energy. In addition, higher thickness in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) compared to same-age peers, suggesting a delayed thinning process, was associated with higher negative mood variability in early and mid-adolescence. Together, this study provides an insight into the development of mood variability and its association with brain structure.

BACKGROUND
Mood swings is linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, the causal relationships between them remain unknown.
METHODS
We conducted this Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to evaluate the causal associations between mood swings (n = 373,733) and 5 CVDs, including CAD, MI, HF, AF, and stroke using summary data of large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS). FinnGen datasets validated the results. Various MR approaches, sensitivity analyses, multivariable MR (MVMR), and two-step MR mediation analyses were applied.
RESULTS
The MR analysis revealed significant causal effects of mood swings on CAD (OR = 1.45, 95 % CI 1.24-1.71; P = 5.52e-6), MI (OR = 1.60, 95 % CI 1.32-1.95; P = 1.77e-6), HF (OR = 1.42, 95 % CI 1.18-1.71; P = 2.32e-4), and stroke (OR = 1.48, 95 % CI 1.19-1.83; P = 3.46e-4), excluding AF (P = 0.16). In the reverse MR analysis, no causal relationships were observed. The results were reproducible using FinnGen data. In the MVMR analysis, the causal effects of mood swings on CAD, MI, HF and stroke still remain significant after adjusting potential confounding factors including BMI, smoking and T2DM, but not for LDL and hypertension. Further mediation analysis indicated hypertension may mediate the causal pathways from mood swings to CAD (18.11 %, 95 % CI: 8.83 %-27.39 %), MI (16.40 %, 95 % CI: 7.93 %-24.87 %), HF (13.06 %, 95 % CI: 6.25 %-19.86 %), and stroke (18.04 %, 95 % CI: 8.73 %-27.34 %).
CONCLUSION
Mood swings has a significant causal impact on the development of CAD, MI, HF, and stroke, partly mediated by hypertension.

BACKGROUND
Individuals with Parkinson's disease present arm swing alterations that can adversely affect their locomotion.
OBJECTIVE
To identify differences in arm swing asymmetry (ASA) between individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) and healthy individuals and to investigate the relationship between ASA, temporal-spatial gait parameters, and disease progression.
METHODS
A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest, Web of Science, and EBSCOhost up to February 2023. Cross-sectional studies evaluating parameters of arm swing (AS) and ASA were included. Methodological quality was assessed using the Critical Appraisal Checklist, and the quality of the evidence was measured with a modified Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation.
RESULTS
Fourteen studies were included in the systematic review (1130 participants). Irrespective of the medication phase (ON or OFF) and the type of walk test employed, the meta-analysis showed moderate-quality evidence that individuals with PD have increased ASA amplitude (SMD = 0.84; 95% CI: 0.69, 0.99; I²= 0%).Very low-quality evidence suggests higher ASA velocity (SMD=0.64; 95% CI: 0.24, 1.05; I²=59%) and lower AS amplitude on both the most affected (ES = -1.99, 95% CI: -3.04, -0.94, I: 91%) and the least affected sides (ES = -0.75, 95% CI: -1.05, -0.44; I²=66%). Meta-regression indicated that ASA is inversely related to disease duration (Z: -2.4892, P< 0.05) and motor symptoms progression (Z: -2.1336, P< 0.05).
CONCLUSIONS
Regardless of the medication phase and the type of walk test employed, individuals with PD exhibited greater ASA and decreased AS amplitude than healthy individuals. ASA decreases as the disease progresses and symptoms worsen.

Premenstrual syndrome and premenstrual dysphoric disorder become episodically manifest during the second half of the female menstrual cycle and are characterized by psychological and physical symptoms causing relevant functional and social impairments. Mood swings, depression and dysphoria are associated depressive symptoms. Therefore, affective disorders should be considered as a differential diagnosis. Of women in reproductive age 3-8% suffer from premenstrual syndrome and 2% of women are affected by premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Genetic and sociobiographical risk factors are discussed. Furthermore, genetic polymorphisms of specific hormone receptors are considered to be genetic risk factors. From a pathophysiological perspective premenstrual syndrome and premenstrual dysphoric disorder are caused by a complex interaction between cyclic changes of ovarian steroids and central neurotransmitters. An imbalance of estrogen and progesterone in the luteal phase is believed to cause the symptoms. Therefore, the first treatment approach consists of regulation of the menstrual cycle or luteal support with progesterone or synthetic progestins even if their effectiveness has not yet been proven in randomized controlled studies and meta-analyses. The administration of combined oral contraceptives is also an option. Especially treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) represent an evidence-based approach. In severe cases the administration of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists with add back treatment can also be considered. In the field of affective disorders premenstrual syndromes represent clinically relevant differential diagnoses and comorbidities, which confront the treating physician with particular clinical challenges. Therefore, this literature review gives the readership a clinical orientation for dealing with these disorders.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate whether or not hyaluronic acid supplementation improves knee joint friction during osteoarthritis progression under gait-like loading conditions.
METHODS
Twelve human cadaveric knee joints were equally divided into mild and moderate osteoarthritic groups. After initial conservative preparation, a passive pendulum setup was used to test the whole joints under gait-like conditions before and after hyaluronic acid supplementation. The friction-related damping properties given by the coefficient of friction µ and the damping coefficient c (in kg m/s) were calculated from the decaying flexion-extension motion of the knee. Subsequently, tibial and femoral cartilage and meniscus samples were extracted from the joints and tested in an established dynamic pin-on-plate tribometer using synthetic synovial fluid followed by synthetic synovial fluid supplemented with hyaluronic acid as lubricant. Friction was quantified by calculating the coefficient of friction.
RESULTS
In the pendulum tests, the moderate OA group indicated significantly lower c values (p < 0.05) under stance phase conditions and significantly lower µ (p = 0.01) values under swing phase conditions. No degeneration-related statistical differences were found for µ or c. Friction was not significantly different (p > 0.05) with regard to mild and moderate osteoarthritis in the pin-on-plate tests. Additionally, hyaluronic acid did not affect friction in both, the pendulum (p > 0.05) and pin-on-plate friction tests (p > 0.05).
CONCLUSION
The results of this in vitro study suggested that the friction of cadaveric knee joint tissues does not increase with progressing degeneration. Moreover, hyaluronic acid viscosupplementation does not lead to an initial decrease in knee joint friction.

The effect of listening to audiobooks, podcasts, and other audio files while walking on gait performance has not been well studied. Although the number of audio users is growing annually. Evidence suggests that a posture-first strategy contributes to gait stability in healthy individuals during dual-task conditions, but this effect may be diminished when the cognitive task is consciously prioritized.
OBJECTIVES
To study the effect of listening to an audiobook while walking, as a daily life-like dual-task, on spatiotemporal gait parameters.
METHODS
Forty young healthy (24.05 ± 3.66) subjects participated in the study. Spatiotemporal gait parameters were measured for 5 min on a treadmill once without (single-task) and once while listening to an audiobook through over-ear headphones (dual-task). Measured parameters included spatiotemporal parameters, gait phases, maximum pressure, and dual-task cost. Data were statistically analyzed using SPSS software.
RESULTS
There were no significant differences in any of the studied parameters between the single- and dual-task conditions, even though the subjective cognitive load of listening to audiobooks while walking was high. However, participants with different habits had significant differences in gait phases and maximum pressure. Rare listeners had a shorter stance phase, a longer swing phase, and a higher maximum pressure on the dominant heel. They also had significant differences in dual-task costs.
CONCLUSION
No differences in the spatiotemporal gait parameters for walking with and without listening to audiobooks, as a daily life-like dual-task, were observed. However, the difference between participants who listened rarely and participants who listened often may confirm the "posture first" strategy in young healthy people.

Menopausal women experience changes in ovarian activity and fluctuating hormone levels. The aim of this study was to detect ongoing sleep and nutritional problems in postmenopausal women. This study was conducted with 62 postmenopausal women who had been diagnosed with major depressive disorder, were aged 42-64, were not dieting for at least 1 month, and had been using antidepressants for at least 6 months. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-42 were used. Anthropometric measurements were taken and body composition analysis was performed. The prevalence of obesity and overweight were 12.9% and 71%, respectively. Hot flashes, night sweats, and mood swing were more common in those who had been through menopause for <5 years. Also, the PSQI, Depression, and Stress scores of those women were higher. Women who had been menopausal for ≥5 years had a higher BMI, waist/hip ratio, and fat mass and better sleep quality and lower daytime dysfunction according to the PSQI. Energy and fat intake were higher, while protein, vitamin C, and calcium intakes were lower in women who had been menopausal for ≥5 years. It is crucial for healthcare professionals to review approaches for early and late menopausal periods and to individualize treatment options, especially in patients whose symptoms persist.

BACKGROUND
The association between benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and various mental disorders is still controversial. This study used the Mendelian randomization (MR) method to clarify the correlation between BPPV and seven mental disorders (bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, suicidality, neuroticism, and mood swings) to aid in the exploration of BPPV complications and prevention and early treatment of mental disorders.
METHODS
The datasets for BPPV and seven mental disorders were obtained from genome-wide association studies (GWASs). Two-sample MR was used to analyze the correlation between exposure (BPPV) and various outcomes (bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, suicidality, neuroticism, and mood swings). A reverse MR study was also performed. The inverse variance weighting (IVW) method, the MR-Egger method, the simple mode method, the weighted mode method, and the weighted median method were selected.
RESULTS
The MR analysis and the reverse MR analysis results did not reveal significant associations between BPPV and bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, suicidal tendencies, neuroticism, and mood swings. Interestingly, neuroticism (IVW: OR = 1.142, 95% CI: 1.059-1.231, = 0.001; P-MR-PRESSO adjustment = 0.0002) and mood swings (IVW: OR = 3.119, 95% CI: 1.652-5.884, = 0.0004) may have a significant association with BPPV. After MR-PRESSO adjustment, there was no horizontal pleiotropy or heterogeneity, and a significant association between neuroticism, mood swings, and BPPV has still been suggested.
CONCLUSION
We conducted MR analysis on genetic data from European populations and discovered a causal relationship between BPPV and the seven mental disorders. Our research findings suggest that BPPV may not have a significant causal relationship with bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, or suicidal tendencies. However, neuroticism and mood swings may be risk factors for BPPV.
