It is necessary to prepare marine UHPC with synthetic fibers instead of steel fibers, owing to the corrosion risk of steel fibers in marine environments. Currently, the performance of UHPC prepared with different types of fibers has not been comparatively investigated. This work prepared UHPC with steel fiber, polyoxymethylene (POM) fiber, polypropylene (PP) fiber, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber. The effects of different fibers on the mechanical properties, impact, and abrasion resistance of UHPC were studied and compared. The results showed that increasing POM fiber can increase the mechanical strength, flexural toughness, impact, and abrasion resistance of UHPC. When its content reaches 2%, the adsorbed-in-fracture energy and abrasion strength of UHPC are 2670 J and 105 h/(kg/m), respectively. At the same fiber content, POM fiber-reinforced UHPC shows better mechanical strength, toughness, and impact- and abrasion-resistance than the polypropylene (PP)- and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-fiber-reinforced UHPCs. Microstructure investigation found that PP fiber has the weakest binding with UHPC paste, which would directly pull out of the matrix under external tensile loading. This weak connection limits the strengthening and toughening effect on the UHPC. PVA fiber has an excellent interfacial connection with the UHPC paste. However, the low tensile strength of PVA fiber limits the strength and toughness of UHPC. POM fiber has a high tensile strength and can absorb tensile loading through debonding, fracture, and tearing. The fracture interface of POM fiber is large, indicating its significant role in strengthening and toughening the UHPC.

Phthalocyanines are ideal candidates as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer due to their favorable chemical and photophysical properties. However, their tendency to form aggregates in water reduces PDT efficacy and poses challenges in obtaining efficient forms of phthalocyanines for therapeutic applications. In the current work, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and micellar formulations were compared for encapsulating and monomerizing a water-soluble zinc phthalocyanine bearing four non-peripheral triethylene glycol chains (). H NMR spectroscopy combined with UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy revealed that exists as a mixture of regioisomers in monomeric form in dimethyl sulfoxide but forms dimers in an aqueous buffer. PVP, polyethylene glycol castor oil (Kolliphor RH40), and three different triblock copolymers with varying proportions of polyethylene and polypropylene glycol units (termed P188, P84, and F127) were tested as micellar carriers for . H NMR chemical shift analysis, diffusion-ordered spectroscopy, and 2D nuclear Overhauser enhancement spectroscopy was applied to monitor the encapsulation and localization of at the polymer interface. Kolliphor RH40 and F127 micelles exhibited the highest affinity for encapsulating in the micellar core and resulted in intense fluorescence emission as well as efficient singlet oxygen formation along with PVP. Among the triblock copolymers, efficiency in binding and dimer dissolution decreased in the order F127 > P84 > P188. PVP was a strong binder for . However, molecules are rather surface-attached and exist as monomer and dimer mixtures. The results demonstrate that NMR combined with optical spectroscopy offer powerful tools to assess parameters like drug binding, localization sites, and dynamic properties that play key roles in achieving high host-guest compatibility. With the corresponding adjustments, polymeric micelles can offer simple and easily accessible drug delivery systems optimizing phthalocyanines' properties as efficient photosensitizers.

To inhibit viral infection, it is necessary for the surface of polypropylene (PP), a polymer of significant industrial relevance, to possess biocidal properties. However, due to its low surface energy, PP weakly interacts with other organic molecules. The biocidal effects of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) have inspired the development of nonwoven PP fibers with surface-bound quaternary ammonium (QA). Despite this advancement, there is limited knowledge regarding the durability of these coatings against scratching and abrasion. It is hypothesized that the durability could be improved if the thickness of the coating layer were controlled and increased. We herein functionalized PP with three-dimensionally surface-grafted poly(-benzyl-4-vinylpyridinium bromide) (PBVP) by a simple and rapid method involving graft polymerization and benzylation and examined the influence of different factors on the antiviral effect of the resulting plastic by using a plaque assay. The thickness of the PBVP coating, surface roughness, and amount of QACs, which jointly determine biocidal activity, could be controlled by adjusting the duration and intensity of the ultraviolet irradiation used for grafting. The best-performing sample reduced the viral infection titer of an enveloped model virus (bacteriophage ϕ6) by approximately 5 orders of magnitude after 60 min of contact and retained its antiviral activity after surface polishing-simulated scratching and abrasion, which indicated the localization of QACs across the coating interior. Our method may expand the scope of application to resin plates as well as fibers of PP. Given that the developed approach is not limited to PP and may be applied to other low-surface-energy olefinic polymers such as polyethylene and polybutene, our work paves the way for the fabrication of a wide range of biocidal surfaces for use in diverse environments, helping to prevent viral infection.

Nitric oxide synthase 3 (NOS3) eluting polyvinyl alcohol-based hydrogels have a large potential in medical applications and device coatings. NOS3 promotes nitric oxide and nitrate production and can effectively be delivered using insect cell viruses, termed baculoviruses. Nitric oxide is known for regulating cell proliferation, promoting blood vessel vasodilation, and inhibiting bacterial growth. The polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based hydrogels investigated here sustained baculovirus elution from five to 25 days, depending on the hydrogel composition. The quantity of viable baculovirus loaded significantly declined with each freeze-thaw from one to four (15.3 ± 2.9% vs. 0.9 ± 0.5%, respectively). The addition of gelatin to the hydrogels protected baculovirus viability during the freeze-thaw cycles, resulting in a loading capacity of 94.6 ± 1.2% with sustained elution over 23 days. Adding chitosan, PEG-8000, and gelatin to the hydrogels altered the properties of the hydrogel, including swelling, blood coagulation, and antimicrobial effects, beneficial for different therapeutic applications. Passive absorption of the baculovirus into PVA hydrogels exhibited the highest baculovirus loading (96.4 ± 0.6%) with elution over 25 days. The baculovirus-eluting hydrogels were hemocompatible and non-cytotoxic, with no cell proliferation or viability reduction after incubation. This PVA delivery system provides a method for high loading and sustained release of baculoviruses, sustaining nitric oxide gene delivery. This proof of concept has clinical applications as a medical device or stent coating by delivering therapeutic genes, improving blood compatibility, preventing thrombosis, and preventing infection.

Microplastics (MPs), as carriers of organic pollutants in the environment, have become a growing public concern in recent years. Tetracycline (TTC) is an antibiotic that can be absorbed by MPs and have a harmful effect on human health. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of investigating the adsorption rate of TTC onto polyvinyl chloride (PVC) MPs. In addition, the adsorption mechanism of this process was studied using isothermal, kinetic, and thermodynamic models. For this purpose, experimental runs using the Box-Behnken model were designed to investigate the main research parameters, including PVC dose (0.5-2 g/L), reaction time (5-55 min), initial antibiotic concentration (5-15 mg/L), and pH (4-10). Based on the research findings, the highest TTC adsorption rate (93.23%) was obtained at a pH of 10, a contact time of 55 min, an adsorbent dose of 1.25 g/L, and an antibiotic concentration of 10 mg/L. The study found that the adsorption rate of TTC followed the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models. Thermodynamic data indicated that the process was spontaneous, exothermic, and physical. Increasing ion concentration decreased TTC adsorption, and distilled water had the highest adsorption, while municipal wastewater had the lowest adsorption. These findings provide valuable insights into the behavior of MPs and organic pollutants, underscoring the importance of conducting additional research and implementing measures to mitigate their detrimental effects on human health and the environment.

Review
Since their development in the 1950s, poly(vinyl acetate) [PVAc] paints (also known as vinyl) have been used by many artists, most notably in countries such as Spain, Portugal, and the United Kingdom; they are also used globally as a common binder for house paints. However, only a relatively limited number of heritage scientific studies have focused on vinyl paints. Consequently, many critical aspects of this material, such as the degradation processes, variations in paint formulations, and responses to conservation treatments, remain largely understudied. This article aims to summarise the available relevant information on poly(vinyl acetate) paints from both the scientific and the conservation practice perspectives. The article provides a brief overview of the development of poly(vinyl acetate) paints as artist-grade and household products and the known differences in their formulations. It also focuses on poly(vinyl acetate) ageing behaviour, the physicochemical properties, the recent scientific research on poly(vinyl acetate) material characterisation and degradation, and the main conservation issues regarding these paints, such as those relating to cleaning treatments.

To investigate the effects of nano-SiO (NS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers on the durability and mechanical properties of cementitious composites subjected to saline freeze-thaw cycling, a series of PVA fiber-reinforced cementitious composite (PFRCC) specimens were prepared using various fiber contents, and a series of NS and PVA fiber-reinforced cementitious composite (NPFRCC) specimens were prepared using various combinations of NS and fiber contents. Durability and fracture toughness tests were subsequently conducted on the specimens after different numbers of saline freeze-thaw cycles. The results indicate that the degradation of material properties can be divided into slow and accelerated damage stages before/after 50 freeze-thaw cycles. The durability and fracture toughness of the specimen series tended to increase, then decrease with increasing NS and PVA contents, suggesting optimum levels. When the PVA fiber content was 0.5%, PFRCC specimens had the best durability after saline freeze-thaw cycles; when the NS and PVA fiber contents were 1.0% and 0.5%, respectively, NPFRCC specimens had the best durability and fracture properties, and the initiation toughness, destabilization toughness, and fracture energy after 100 saline freeze-thaw cycles were 120.69%, 160.02%, and 451.31%, respectively. The results of this study may guide future exploration of the durability and mechanical properties of concrete subjected to freeze-thaw action.

INTRODUCTION
Thromboembolic events associated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in clinical treatment are typical. Heparin coating has been widely employed as a surface modification strategy for ECMO tubes. However, its clinical application is often accompanied by unavoidable complications due to its mechanism of action. As a direct thrombin inhibitor with a single target, Bivalirudin (BV) has exhibited a lower incidence of adverse events and superior pharmacokinetic performance compared to heparin.
METHODS
A gelatin methacrylate hydrogel (GelMA) coating layer with BV was successfully synthesized on polyvinyl chloride, and the drug release ratio was close to complete release within 7 days.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Simulated extracorporeal circulation experiments using roller pumps and jugular arteriovenous bypass experiments in rabbits demonstrated its outstanding anticoagulant efficacy. The systemic anticoagulant assay proved that BV hydrogel coating does not affect the coagulation level, and reduces the risk of complications such as systemic bleeding compared to intravenous injection. BV-Coating GelMA hydrogel tube has exhibited good biocompatibility and significantly improved anticoagulant performance, making it an optimal choice for surface materials used in blood-contacting medical devices.

Fundamental to all living organisms and living soft matter are emergent processes in which the reorganization of individual constituents at the nanoscale drives group-level movements and shape changes at the macroscale over time. However, light-induced degradation of fluorophores, photobleaching, is a significant problem in extended bioimaging in life science. Here, we report opening a long-time investigation window by nonbleaching phase intensity nanoscope: PINE. We accomplish phase-intensity separation such that nanoprobe distributions are distinguished by an integrated phase-intensity multilayer thin film (polyvinyl alcohol/liquid crystal). We overcame a physical limit to resolve sub-10 nm cellular architectures, and achieve the first dynamic imaging of nanoscopic reorganization over 250 h using PINE. We discover nanoscopic rearrangements synchronized with the emergence of group-level movements and shape changes at the macroscale according to a set of interaction rules with importance in cellular and soft matter reorganization, self-organization, and pattern formation.

Hydroxyapatite (HA) is a porous material widely developed in various research fields because of its high biodegradability, biocompatibility, and low toxicity. In this research, HA was synthesized using a hydrothermal method with chicken eggshells as a calcium source and various concentrations of polyvinyl alcohol as a porogen (2.5%, 5.0%, and 7.5% by wt). The structure and morphology of HA were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. HA was obtained with varying concentrations of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) porogen according to Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (ICSD) standard. Based on analysis using a refinement method, changes in unit cell parameters (cell volume and lattice strain) of HA synthesized using PVA porogen compared to the standard, the chi square (χ) and index of values were relatively low, validating the acceptable of the data. In addition, HA [Ca(PO)(OH)] with hexagonal structure and the P63/m space group was successfully obtained. Morphological analysis of HA by SEM found that HA has a spherical shape, and the porosity of HA increases with increasing concentrations of polyvinyl alcohol. The highest porosity was obtained with an addition of 5.0 wt% of PVA porogen (HAP3), reaching 69.53%.
