Allergic contact dermatitis is one of the most frequent occupational skin diseases. Targeted allergen avoidance can only be achieved by identification of the causative allergen. Therefore, patch testing is of utmost importance in occupational dermatology, not only in terms of assessing causal relationships but also regarding the implementation of prevention measures and evaluation of the legal criteria for an occupational skin disease in Germany (statutory occupational disease BK 5101). The lack of commercial patch test preparations poses a great diagnostic challenge. Patch testing of patient's own materials from their workplace is therefore very important to reduce diagnostic gaps. The performance and documentation of the patch test should be in line with current guidelines and recommendations to ensure the necessary test quality and comprehensibility of the test results.

N-Acyl-amino acids can act as mild biobased surfactants, which are used, e.g., in baby shampoos. However, their chemical synthesis needs acyl chlorides and does not meet sustainability criteria. Thus, the identification of biocatalysts to develop greener synthesis routes is desirable. We describe a novel aminoacylase from Paraburkholderia monticola DSM 100849 (PmAcy) which was identified, cloned, and evaluated for its N-acyl-amino acid synthesis potential. Soluble protein was obtained by expression in lactose autoinduction medium and co-expression of molecular chaperones GroEL/S. Strep-tag affinity purification enriched the enzyme 16-fold and yielded 15 mg pure enzyme from 100 mL of culture. Biochemical characterization revealed that PmAcy possesses beneficial traits for industrial application like high temperature and pH-stability. A heat activation of PmAcy was observed upon incubation at temperatures up to 80 °C. Hydrolytic activity of PmAcy was detected with several N-acyl-amino acids as substrates and exhibited the highest conversion rate of 773 U/mg with N-lauroyl-L-alanine at 75 °C. The enzyme preferred long-chain acyl-amino-acids and displayed hardly any activity with acetyl-amino acids. PmAcy was also capable of N-acyl-amino acid synthesis with good conversion rates. The best synthesis results were obtained with the cationic L-amino acids L-arginine and L-lysine as well as with L-leucine and L-phenylalanine. Exemplarily, L-phenylalanine was acylated with fatty acids of chain lengths from C8 to C18 with conversion rates of up to 75%. N-lauroyl-L-phenylalanine was purified by precipitation, and the structure of the reaction product was verified by LC-MS and NMR. KEY POINTS: • A novel aminoacylase from Paraburkholderia monticola was cloned, expressed in E. coli and purified. • The enzyme PmAcy exhibits exceptional temperature and pH stability and a broad substrate spectrum. • Synthesis of acyl amino acids was achieved in good yields.

Cosmetic products may be exposed to microbial contamination during storage or transport, and to avoid the risk of microbial growth, manufacturers add preservative compounds as a protection for the product from spoilage. The Microbial Challenge test is a procedure to evaluate the preservative efficacy by challenging the product with testing microorganisms to determine the quality of preservation. In this study, thirty-two cosmetics products used for body and skin care were collected from markets and pharmacies in Mecca region, these products are subjected to microbiological analysis, results show that most samples are contaminated except six samples. Non contaminated samples were subjected to European Pharmacopeia 7.0 standards. Results show that two samples, foaming gel and body and face cream are failed to demonstrate the required microbiocidal effect against the test species, results recorded 1.21 x 10 and 6.80 x 10 (CFU/ml) respectively at the second day of incubation, other products: shower gel, hand wash, body lotion and shampoo demonstrate that required microbiocidal effect against the test species during day 2, 7, 14 until day 28th. The microbial count number is less than 10 during all incubation periods. To prevent contamination in cosmetics, manufacturers are required to add a good preservative system to the products and examine them before sale. Due to the high percentage of microbial contamination in cosmetics in Mecca region and for consumers safety, this study is prepared.

An extraction-free methodology is proposed for quantifying urea in cosmetics, which relies on urea-mediated decrease of methyl red decoloration by sodium hypochlorite. The method is applied directly to the cosmetic formulation and the resulting color intensity is captured by a smartphone camera. We demonstrate a linear relationship between color intensity and urea concentration in O/W emulsions and a shampoo. This quantification methodology is fully validated by determining its technical characteristics in an O/W cosmetic emulsion: The standard curve is linear over 2.5-30.0 % w/w urea (R ≥ 0.985). The coefficient of variation (CV %) on all quality control levels is ≤ 12.54 % for intermediate precision, indicating acceptable precision. Bias is up to ±4.93 % in the emulsion, indicating acceptable accuracy and a countable matrix effect. The proposed analysis setup in combination with a standard addition methodology is applied to verify urea content in purpose-made emulsions: bias is ≤±10.9 %, even in the presence of interfering ammonia. We finally demonstrate that the camera-captured color intensity of an O/W emulsion is proportional to different colorant concentrations in the formulation. This opens the route for further applications of the proposed setup to other ingredients capable of generating a colored product upon suitable reaction inside the formulation matrix.

Hair dyeing has become a prevalent lifestyle trend, especially within the fashion industry. However, it possesses disadvantages, such as containing carcinogenic and toxic materials. In this study, we developed a biocompatible hair-dyeing technology using a shampoo with a dark polyphenol complex (DPC), referred to as S-DPC. The DPC was formed from a mixture of gallic acid and [1,1'-biphenyl]-2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexol and used to enhance both the stability of the hair coating and its ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS). Colloidal DPC particles play a pivotal role in the coating process of various hair dyes, ensuring the uniform coloring of human hair through intermolecular interactions such as hydrogen bonding. Owing to the effect of a polyphenol complex on hair coating, we observed improved antistatic performance and enhanced mechanical strength, resulting in a substantial increase in elongation at the breaking point from 33.74% to 48.85%. The multicolor S-DPC exhibited antioxidant properties, as indicated by its ROS-scavenging ability, including 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl inhibition (87-89%), superoxide radical scavenging (84-87%), and hydroxyl radical scavenging (95-98%). Moreover, the in vitro analysis of the DPC revealed nearly 100% cell viability in live and dead assays, highlighting the remarkable biocompatibility of the DPC. Therefore, considering its effectiveness and safety, this biomaterial has considerable potential for applications in hair dyeing.

In this study, we developed a hair-coating polyphenol complex (PPC) that showed ultraviolet (UV) protection properties, antistatic features, and the capability to enhance the mechanical strength of damaged hair. PPCs prepared with different ratios of tannic acid (TA), gallic acid (GA), and caffeic acid (CA) simultaneously increased the self-recovery of damaged hair by protecting the cuticle. PPC prevented light from passing through the damaged hair during exposure to UV radiation. Moreover, surfaces coated with PPC1 (TA:GA:CA, 100:20:0.5) exhibited a higher conductivity than surfaces coated with PPCs with other ratios of TA, GA, and CA, with a resistance of 0.72 MΩ. This influenced the antistatic performance of the surface, which exhibited no electrical attraction after being subjected to an electrostatic force. Additionally, damaged hair exhibited a significant increase in durability and elasticity after coating with a PPC1-containing shampoo, with a tensile strain of up to 2.06× post-treatment, indicating the recovery of the damaged cuticle by the PPC complex. Furthermore, PPC1-containing shampoo prevented damage by scavenging excess reactive oxygen species in the hair. The combination effect promoted by the natural PPC offers new insights into hair treatment and paves the way for further exploration of hair restoration technology.

This article attempts to explore the notion of "wellness" in relation to the emerging health markets in Delhi. For this study, spa centers are going to be my major focus. How spa centers define and sell wellness? How does the notion of wellness link to the neoliberal economy and laissez-faire nature of the state? Moreover, in present societies how has it emerged as an "ideological normativity" which pathologies those who do not conform to the idea of wellness? Wellness is used in everyday conversation to indicate a healthy balance of mind, body, and emotions. It argues that how wellness as a quality is purportedly being sold through a range of objects and services, from a bottle of shampoo to the complex practice of power yoga. The article examines the spa center as a site and how it models the notions of health and wellness in new ways.

Plica neuropathica (PN), also known as plica polonica, trichoma, matting, felting, or bird's nest hair, is a common but rarely reported hair disorder. It is characterized by the abrupt onset of irreversible hair entanglement, forming a densely matted hair mass. PN has been associated with the use of ionic or herbal shampoos, vigorous hair care practice, self-neglect, systemic infection, parasitic infestation, immunosuppressive drugs, and psychiatric conditions. However, literature supporting the coexistence of PN in psychiatric disorders is scarce. PN may be one of the presenting symptoms observed by physicians. In some cases of psychiatric illness, patients consult more readily with non-mental health professionals than psychologists or psychiatrists. To highlight this issue, we herein report a case of PN in a 32-year-old woman with a 1-month history of being unable to detangle her hair. The patient initially visited the dermatology department and was subsequently diagnosed with schizophrenia following psychiatric consultation. After establishing the fundamental diagnosis apparently underlying the PN, psychiatric treatment with antipsychotic medication and dermatological treatment of the hair condition were instituted. There was an improvement in both at the four-week follow-up. This case history highlights a rare presentation of schizophrenia.

Patch tests are often used in safety evaluations to identify the substance causing skin irritation, but the same substance can sometimes give positive or negative results depending on the test conditions. Here, we investigated differences in the skin penetration of two test compounds under different application conditions. We studied the effects of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and the nonionic surfactant polysorbate 80 (PS) on skin penetration of the preservatives methylisothiazolinone (MT) and methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCT), which are used in cosmetics such as shampoos. The skin permeation of MT was enhanced by SDS but was unchanged by PS. Skin impedance decreased in the presence of SDS whereas PS had the same effect as the control aqueous solution, suggesting that SDS reduction of the barrier function of skin affects the permeation of MT, a hydrophilic drug. Application of a mixture of MCT and MT in the presence of SDS did not affect the skin permeation of MCT whereas the permeation of MT was enhanced by SDS, indicating that the skin permeation of MCT is less affected by SDS than is MT. Thus, attention should be paid to the possible effect of co-solutes, especially hydrophilic drugs.

BACKGROUND
Head lice are a main public health problem and the most important human ectoparasites and the use of pediculicides is the most common way to control it. One of the possible causes of treatment failure is the lack of improper application of pediculicide. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of education on efficacy of 1% permethrin or 4% dimeticone lotion to treat head lice infestation.
METHODS
This quasi-experimental study included 100 individuals with head lice infestation from comprehensive urban health centers in Ardabil as the intervention group, and 400 individuals from East Azerbaijan and West Azerbaijan provinces as the control group, from April to March 2019. The data collection tools included a demographic questionnaire and an examination recording sheet, which documented the presence of adult lice or nits. Due to the inability to perform random assignment and control for numerous observed covariates, propensity score matching (PSM) was used.
RESULTS
The outcome of treatment included elimination of head lice infestation on is 7, and in the case of recurrence, it was considered on days 14 and 30 after treatment. The results showed that the educational intervention program had a significant positive effect on the efficacy of both treatments. The likelihood of improvement was approximately three times greater in the intervention group compared to the control group.
CONCLUSION
Participants who received the training intervention (OR = 3.29; CI 95%: 2.21-4.88) were more likely to have a successful treatment than control group. In the case of providing proper training on the use of pediculicides and observing hygiene tips to patients with pediculosis, could help to successful treatment of pediculosis.
